The Courtyard in New Bern, NC, is located in the heart of the historic district, offering free parking within walking distance of local attractions and shops. It's even a pickup point for the local trolley tour, which stops right in the parking lot. I visited during a busy weekend featuring a house tour and a marathon. I originally hoped to extend my stay, but the hotel was fully booked--which actually worked out for the best, as a road closure for the race would have left me stuck on my departure day. I arrived at the hotel earlier than planned, after a change in my Jones County itinerary. There was a wait and some issues with the new Marriott software, but the staff was as friendly as could be. Even after I kept going back to the desk with more questions. I booked a room with a balcony, knowing that I would likely get a side view, not the riverview. But this turned out to be a positive, too. I got to watch the moon rise. The sunrise and sunsets are what people usually watch, but watching the full moon was wonderful and beautiful. The hotel has an outside pool, gazebo, and fire pit with views of the Neuse River. The Bistro is on-site for breakfast and dinner. There is also a fitness room. WIFI and the television stations available were fine. I wish I had more time to stay in New Bern, but I was told I can return and visit for longer. read more

I recently stayed at the Marriott Courtyard in New Bern for a business trip, and I cannot recommend this hotel enough! As someone who travels often for work and grew up understanding the hospitality industry (thanks to my mom working in hotels), I know how challenging this job can be. The team at this hotel truly goes above and beyond. Before my arrival, Reg, the Manager, was incredibly helpful and lovely in answering my questions. Upon arrival, Jen greeted us warmly, gave us a tour, and was so polite, professional, and genuinely kind. Kim in the morning was equally amazing! Helpful, kind, and attentive as we prepared for a meeting. Even the barista at the coffee bar (whose name I didn't catch) was wonderful and made my mornings brighter. To top it all off, I accidentally left my Kindle in my room, and the team shipped it back to me SO quickly! I'm so thankful for their thoughtfulness and efficiency. it really speaks to the level of care they provide. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the views were stunning, but what really sets this hotel apart is the exceptional service. Every staff member I encountered was polite, kind, and a joy to be around. If you're looking for a place to stay in New Bern, this is it. Highly recommend! read more

I didn't know what to expect but it's on the waterfront, has free and plenty of parking, is walking distance to both downtown and a beautiful park and is spotlessly clean. I want to call out two staff members. Fawn checked us in and was very gracious and informative since I asked for help as a tourist. When our stay got challenging due to an unexpected reason, Jenn quickly extended our stay and made sure we had the supplies we needed. Jenn really took care of us in a tough stressful situation. We had a really great experience here! The front desk staff was super nice. Our room had a balcony and was overlooking the pool and the river. The pool was really nice when we used it, thankfully in shade for a good bit of the afternoon. The river was peaceful and we really enjoyed watching people win surf and boats go by. We parked our car and literally did not get in again for the rest of our trip. This hotel was within walking distance of all the restaurants we ate at, all the stores we shopped at, the ghost tour we took, Tryon Palace, the Riverwalk, literally everything else we could have ever wanted to do. The air conditioning was comfortable, the front lobby usually had water for us to fill up our water bottles, and they gave us extra toiletries whenever we ran out. Could definitely use a few updates, but really we had no complaints at all. read more

Courtyard by Marriott in New Bern, NC from Sept 26-28, 2025. Our experience was unacceptable and fell far below Marriott standards. Upon arrival, front desk staff did not acknowledge us, and housekeeping refused to clean our room or provide towels, citing a two-night minimum, while speaking in a rude and hostile manner. Towels were left at the front desk unattended. Our room (226) was never serviced, the air conditioning failed, causing condensation and a soaked carpet, and there was no water or coffee available. We left a comment card and voicemail with General Manager Reg Poteat, who denied any credit request in writing without addressing any of the issues. We were in town for the weekend to visit family. The hotel was in a great location, on the water and within walking distance of downtown. The price is very reasonable. Our room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, we had plenty of towels and the heat/AC was in perfect working order. The bistro/bar is quite small but they do have the option to grab a drink and some food. My ONLY complaint was that they only had 1 elevator so we had to wait quite a while to get the elevator during check out time. Otherwise, it was GREAT and we would definitely stay here again. read more

Disappointed by Poor Follow-Through on complimentary upgrade We chose to stay at this Marriott in New Bern for a special occasion -- one of our guests was celebrating a birthday -- and as Bonvoy members, we were told we were being put down for a complimentary upgrade, depending on availability. At check-in, the hotel did have upgraded rooms available, but we were not given one. I called the front desk to inquire, and the staff member (I believe her name was Jen) said we could have the upgrade if we were willing to switch rooms at that point -- but by then, we were already settled. It made no sense why the upgrade wasn't just assigned from the beginning, especially since the rooms were available and we were told to expect it. To make matters worse, she said she "wouldn't charge us" for the upgrade -- but this was a complimentary upgrade based on our membership status and birthday occasion, not something we ever should have been charged for. I left a message for the manager with another staff member (Anna), who said she'd pass it along, and I provided both my email and phone number. I never received a follow-up of any kind. Very disappointed in how this was handled, especially when we were looking forward to a celebratory experience. A simple gesture the hotel promised could have made our stay special -- instead, it felt like we were an afterthought. Our beautiful view turned out to be the parking lot. read more

This hotel has one of the best locations along the waterfront in New Bern and although the location literally brought us there, the level of customer service and cleanliness will bring us back. New Bern does not have a lot going in general and anything that is happening is quite close to the hotel, so when it comes to travel, location is important. Although I would have like a better view from the room, a last minute booking comes with limited options. The first thing we did was go directly to the pool which at the time felt a bit like swimming in lake superior, so out of the cold water and into the comfortable patio chairs to enjoy the view of the water. The well stocked bar directly off of the lobby is conveniently located and staffed with some excellent folks. Breakfast was a must, and course they offer all of the coffee options anyone would expect, but they also have a impressive menu for a fresh cooked breakfast. Again I have to compliment the friendliness and willingness of the staff to ensure the day started off on a very complimentary and positive note. I really do not understand why this hotel has such an low overall rating, I found it a great stay and will return in the future. Yes the hotel is not brand new and has aged, but it has aged well and is kept extremely clean, I have not found anything cleaner along the coast as of yet. Cheers! read more

This Marriott property is very much a mixed bag for me. It has an excellent location on the Neuse River, and very close to beautiful, historic downtown New Bern, well within walking distance of a number of nice restaurants, and it is an easy on and off of US Highway 70. But the check in process and the physical aspects of the room we stayed in was much less than a pleasant experience. We had requested an early check in, but were told on our arrival at 2 PM that no rooms were available (they were fully booked the night before, we were told, and I guess they all checked out late), and that we'd have to come back at 3 PM - I guess all the empty rooms would be cleaned and available in that one hour period! We came back at 3 PM, and it was more confusion, more frustration - the same unfocused, confused clerk first tried to assign us a room that was different than what we'd requested - her coworker had to point that out to her. She had to contact the housekeeping staff 3 times to find an available room - the first 2 had already been assigned during the hour we were told no rooms would be available - most irritating! This room was adequate in some ways (comfortable bed & pillows, well lit,etc), but there were also some problems and some deficiencies. The fan on the heat/AC unit is very loud and annoying, and the first night we were there, the heat did not work properly and the room became quite cold. There was no closet, but rather a narrow stand up wardrobe unit with very limited space for our hanging clothes, and in fact, I had to remove the hangers that were already there to get any space at all.. The shampoo and conditioner were the smallest I've ever seen in a motel room, and was barely enough for one person. And finally, the bottom of the tub becomes dangerously slippery once wet. We like New Bern, and we like the location of this motel a great deal, but whether we'll come back to this property remains to be seen - and we almost always stay at a Marriott motel, if available. read more

Roaches!! Woke up to two large cockroachs in our room. We called the front desk and asked if someone could come to the room and remove them. The woman (Kim) who answer the phone said flippantly that she was the only one there and no one was available to help us until later In the day. Finally we went to the front desk and asked about a new room. (At this point one cockroach had disappeared somewhere around behind dressers.) Kim said she could get us a new room but not until 12 at the earliest. It is highly concerning to think the hotel cares so little about a roach infestation in their rooms. This is a tough review to write. I have so many mixed emotions about my stay here. The positive- the view from the water side is breathtaking! The pool area has such a great view, too! There is a park directly beside the hotel with a whole bunch of ducks and a nice walking path. The location is perfect for being downtown New Bern. It is within walking distance to everything. The beds are comfortable and the TV has netflix. The AC also works very well. That is why it received the 3 stars. Here is the ugly truth about the rest of it. I booked my room almost a month in advance for a balcony room. I purchased through hotels.com which I have never had an issue with in over 60 bookings. When we checked in and got to the room, they had us in a non balcony room with a tiny window overlooking the parking lot. I immediately went back to the front desk and let the lady know. She said I didn't pay for a balcony (which my receipt clearly states I did) and that she had no other rooms available. Her and another woman decided to literally talk about me and the third party I booked through in front of me and my children. I said "I can hear you" and she said "it's not you baby, it's the company that lies to the customers and we have to deal with it." I had two choices- let it go or spend an hour on the phone getting a refund from hotels.com and trying to find another hotel. She would not reimburse me and continued to ignore me and rant and rave to her coworker. It was so unprofessional. The room itself needs a major upgrade and they only have one elevator for the whole hotel. Masks were not being enforced at all and the lock to the room decided to stop working after one usage. They also told me they needed a card for incidentals (which I am used to) but they took out a $20 charge without telling me. I called about it today and the lady said it was released but will take 7-10 days depending on my banking institute. I highly recommend this location looks into their people working the front desk. This woman should not have a job in the hospitality industry. She called me baby over 10 times in 10 minutes, too. read more

This hotel is in a great location, 5-10 minutes walking from downtown, and right on the water. Our room had a nice view of the water, too. The room we stayed in had 2 queen sized beds, and the room itself was spacious and comfortable. Everything was clean and well-kept, including the bathroom. They had a fridge, which was a plus for us. The staff was friendly, too - we were given a few helpful facts about New Bern when we checked in. There was a little confusion with our late check-out time, but they sorted things out, and allowed for us to have a late check-out due to our scheduling needs. The other amenities are not amazing, though - the gym is just a few treadmills, stationary bicycle, and weights. The pool was closed when we stayed there. Breakfast isn't included. Wifi was free, however. Overall, we had a pleasant stay at the Courtyard New Bern. I wouldn't mind staying here again if we were back in New Bern. read more

We arrived on a Friday night, our TV in the room was not working. We called the front desk, the lady came to our room, she worked with the TV for about 10 minutes and could not get it to come on. When I asked what could we do, she said there were no more rooms and we could go watch TV in the lobby. She said she would text her maintenance man because he was gone for the weekend. We went to dinner and when we returned, it still had not been fixed and front office had not heard from anyone. My husband worked on the TV and managed to get it working. But no one from the hotel ever contacted us again. Saturday we went and did a fishing trip, when we returned no one had yet been to check on the TV. Sunday when we checked out I told the front desk person the problem, she said she would have the manager call us on Monday. He didn't call, we had to call him and he told us his maintenance man told him there was nothing wrong with the TV and we lied about it not working. We have filed a complaint with the corporate office for Marriott. For $250.00 a night and no breakfast, no microwave in room or ice machine on the first floor....there are nicer places to stay in New Bern. read more

Never in my life have I felt like a hostage, until today.I accompanied my husband on a business trip. Today, while he was gone to his office, I was verbally accosted by two of the housekeeping staff, first generally, and then DIRECTLY. I had been on a FaceTime call with my 4 old granddaughter, when two housekeepers (directly outside my door, in sight through the peephole) began LOUDLY "discussing" their displeasure with their supervisor, and the "plans" they had for that person. They were repeatedly shouting every offensive curse word in the book, and my granddaughter heard every one of them. While I am very concerned for the safety of the supervisor of these two women, I am equally deeply concerned about the message that was just sent to my granddaughter while audibly witnessing this vitriol. I curtly ended our call, and notified the front desk. Thankfully, they sent someone up immediately. However, of course, the two women (who were still outside my door, not knowing I was watching through the peephole and listening) vehemently denied any knowledge of the situation. So, I opened my door, and was forced to "out" myself as the complainant, naming both of them. At that point, I thought it was over. However, after I retreated to my room, and the person who had come to make them stop had left, they continued their assault- on ME! Banging on my door, falsely accusing me of calling them "N""'s"(they were African American), and shouting "Bitch" at me. This is NOT acceptable- in a Marriott, or ANY other place!!!! The views are beautiful though there's no chair to sit and enjoy it from the room the staff was lovely very friendly and helpful a room wasn't ready when we checked in but it wasn't a problem cuz we were going to walk around anyways and so we got a nice water view end of the pool very pretty but the toilet would start running in the middle of the night I need to get up jiggle the handle go back to bed a little while later start running again and there's mold in the caulking of the shower and something dripping down the mirrors and the cabinet they must have sprayed them and forgot to wipe them but the bed was comfortable so life is good read more

I've clocked 115 nights at Marriotts this year and it's only September. This hotel is by far one of the worst Marriott properties I've stayed at and I travel a lot for work. While the location is great the staff here has the worst attitudes and the rooms stink. I've stayed here several times thinking maybe I'll give them one more shot and they never fail to disappoint. Also, I know they got hit hard by the hurricane which prompted me to try and support this location but I just can't anymore. Stay elsewhere in New Bern, the Springhill is just a couple of miles down the road but it's much cleaner and the staff is super nice. This place really needs to get it together, they aren't deserving of the Marriott name. read more

This hotel had some of the nicest staff out of all the hotels I've stayed at. Very friendly and caring. The hotel was very clean and they were in the process of remodeling. But I'm giving them one star because of the hotel manager who is unaware of how to manager his staff and treat customers. We rented 4 rooms at this hotel over a 4 week period for a business trip (roughly $12,000, give or take). During the fourth week of our stay the hotel manager called my husband to tell him one of the housekeepers complained about having to change the sheets in our room, and that we needed to not let them get dirt again to avoid upsetting the maid. Lol. I wish I was making that up. All because my 3 year old had an accident during the night and I asked for our sheets to be changed. And I heard from other housekeepers and another customer that the staff who complained was throwing a hissy fit about having to change the sheets. Instead of stopping that behavior he allowed it and placed the blame on my three year old son. Reg, the manager (and owner, I'm assuming. His last name is Poteat and the hotel is owned by Poteat Hospitality) should have had the housekeeping manager deal with this employee. There was no reason to call us about a situation that was an accident and something we had no control over. Completely unprofessional. What should we have done? Changed the sheets ourselves? Why are we paying $200 a night of housekeeping can't even do the job they are paid to do? We called three times to speak to him after this incident and he would not return our calls. He does not know how to do his job, manager his staff, or deal with his customers. You don't call your paying customers complaining about your staff, and then refuse to return their calls. I know that they have guests stay at that hotel who absolutely trash their rooms. But he felt the need to discriminate against my child. This hotel is not child friendly. read more

Clean rooms decent service. Wish you could get a cup of coffee earlier than 6:30AM, but that is when the kitchen opens. Also wish the business model included a free breakfast. The food is pretty average, and having to pay for it makes you wish you were at a Hampton. My room was on the south side, adjacent to a boat ramp and noisy intersection. If I went back, I would insist on north or east side. The design is odd as well, with the lobby open to the 2nd floor hallway, so I could actually hear lobby noise from within my room. read more

So, I understand this whole Covid thing has changed things. I get why the cleaning crew are not going in during your stay to clean. However, if you know the next guests staying in that room, are staying for more than one night, put extra towels, shampoo, etc in the room. It's not that tough, and it saves the guests from having to call and go down to the front desk. I know you can argue that it's not that big of a deal, however, when i'm paying over $150 a night - it's the least you can do. Or put a care package with the extra items in a bag and put it outside the room. So my big thing is - either change the pricing of the rooms to reflect the the no cleaning, or put some good practices in place for the guests. read more

We stayed here, one night, on points, and found it to be quite a nice hotel. Upon arrival, we were checked in immediately. Our room, overlooking the park and a bit of the river, was well sized, clean, had a couch, mini-fridge, microwave, large TV with good channels, and a desk/chair. All fairly typical, but nice. The bed was comfortable. Shower had good pressure. All in all, cannot complain. The location is top notch - right by downtown for easy access to bars, restaurant and shops. Close to the historic district for a nice walk as well, and the park next door is small but nice. Parking is easy. WiFi was fast and free. read more

And it was still amazing to me because of Him, his wife, his family, his employees- (aside of me) He will never ignore a thing! The manager burst into my room in the morning and told me he was going to make me eat a plastic door stop with nails in it. He then proceeded to threaten us again and kicked us out. He claimed he had made us leave the night before and that we were trespassing. This was false, as we had not been addressed the previous night nor had we received complaints of any kind. We tried to have a civil discussion with him and have him explain what we did wrong, but he refused to explain himself. He abused his power as manager and claimed we "destroyed" his hotel when we did no such thing. Never stay here. Courtyard will be receiving a formal complaint soon. read more

We are lifelong Marriott clients. In forty plus years never a complaint at any of our stays. We have grown accustomed to the Marriott experience. Unfortunately, this Hotel, and mostly its Owner (Reg Poteat) seems to have come to the conclusion it doesn't need to hold up to those Marriott Standards. After a long day, We arrived at 4:30 pm (for a 6:00 wedding) to stay in our $300 a night room ( $270 +tax) We were told there was a two hour wait as our room wasn't ready. I informed the clerk we had an event, and we needed a place to change clothes and use the restroom. She then smirked, and within minutes produced a room for us. We noticed a particular smell ( Dog or baby poo) , but didn't have time to call down to the desk. I opened the balcony door thinking it would dissipate while we were gone. We arrived back at our room at 12:30 am to find it had not dissipated... I called down to the desk and was offered a fifty dollar discount, or to move to another room. We were not in the mood to move our belongings at 1 am. I was not satisfied with the discount. The gentleman assured me I could get a better discount at the front desk in the morning. At checkout, The clerk quickly resorted to defense mode as soon as I told her what room, and who I was. Without hesitatation, and in a very practiced manner, she said there nothing she would, or could do, "have a nice day." " You have already prepaid for your room, so there never was a discount, but I'll have my manager call you." She turned her back,and went into the office. This was not her first time saying this to customers..... After not hearing from the manager , I called him. His immediate response was a tirade of rudeness and why I was wrong. When I asked about the original offered discount, his answer was "Thats off the table now, it couldn't have been that bad, you stayed didn't you? I don't care if you ever come back" It's a shame this man is representing the fine name of Marriott, and teaching his employees to blame customers. read more

I recently reserved a room and cancelled my reservation which I received a cancellation number. The following day, I noticed there was a charge on my account for the stay. Thinking this was a mistake, a phone call was made to the property. After speaking with the front desk clerk, I was advised there is a 48-hour cancellation policy. I then, inquired where this information was located. Unfortunately, the clerk wasn't able to point me in the right direction. As a result, a voice message was left for Mr. Poteat, the general manager. The message went as follows: Hi, I would like to know where the cancellation policy is located indicating a 48-hour window is required in order to reduce or remove the chance of being charged. I didn't have a problem with paying the nightly rate. I more so wanted to know for future references. Monday, September 23, 2019, Mr. Poteat contacted me asking when the reservation was made and when I cancelled. I replied the day without certainty of reserving, but I confidently stated the cancellation date as well as released the cancellation number. Mr. Poteat, then says a call was made to the property on 9/21/2019 to cancel followed by that's what I am showing and there's nothing that I can do for you. I was shocked as the call wasn't to receive any type of compensation but education on where this policy is located with this verbiage. He then says, I should know the cancellation policy. He couldn't tell me exactly where the 48-hour cancellation information was located because on the Marriott website indicates, "You can change or cancel reservations by signing into the Mobile App or onto www.Marriott.com and select the reservation. If your reservation is not listed or you cannot make changes, contact Member Support." I explained that I would have loved to stay at his property but will not spend my money there as if it seems that he responded to be as if I was a free loader and couldn't be accountable if a mistake was made on my part. I also told the gentlemen that I am from this area and come home often as I can. I didn't appreciate the approach taken with me and going forward my money will not be spent at this property. Springhill suites will be where I patron going forward. I was made to feel as if what I had to say didn't matter. Marriot headquarters has been contacted and once I research who owns the property there will be communication as well. I am far from being a person who isn't well spoken or uneducated but definitely received that impression. Mr. Poteat was apologetic after I informed him on how he made me feel without being unprofessional. Possibly what he was expecting. read more

I stayed at this hotel for my brothers wedding last January. Upon arrival everything seemed great. The hotel was in a gorgeous location, staff seemed friendly, rooms were clean, and the beds were comfortable. I was very impressed until it was time to go to the wedding and the card (with a check in it) for my brother was missing. I just thought I lost it somewhere but honestly didn't understand how it had disappeared from INSIDE of my suitcase under all of my clothes. It was such a mystery. About a week after returning from the wedding, I log into my bank account and all of my money was gone. I immediately called my bank and they told me that an ACH transaction was completed using my banking information by a woman with the name of "XXX". I immediately called the hotel and they in fact had a house keeping employee working at that hotel with the same name. I then called the police and they started an investigation. It turns out she had done similar things in the past and she was charged with fraud. Let me also mention that the entire time we were in the hotel, we had the "do not disturb" sign on our door... even when we left for dinner. This was not the only strange incident. We had other family staying in the hotel and others experienced the workers in the lobby bathroom and in the hallway cursing and screaming on the phone. Then someone discovered their ring was missing and asked one of the workers. She said hold on let me look, about 5 minutes later she said oh, I found it in the trash... WTH? obviously she didn't find a ring that small in a big trash can... she knew exactly where she put it when she took it. After multiple conversations with the manager he of course apologized and said he would work with the police but he did nothing else to show his apologies. If that happened in a hotel I was running I would have at least paid the patron back for the stay that weekend, but that's just me. I will never set foot in this Marriott every again. We stayed here for over three weeks on business. We will go back for fun. Hotel has beautiful view of river and is within walking distance of Persimmon's an outstanding restaurant. Also within walking distance of cute shops , other restaurants and the yacht club. The staff of the hotel was wonderful and most accommodating. read more

This hotel has gone through iterations over the years. Courtyard seems like it should have been a step up from comfort inn, but it eliminated some nice features and added some annoying elements, like charging for lobby coffee. The elevator is still slow, the laundry machines older and less reliable, some in room features are gone (no microwave for ex.), health spa is a couple of treadmills, and business services are limited. read more
