I have celiac, so I need scrupulous gluten-free food. Went with my husband and another couple and we all shared the dishes (with one non-GF exception that they shared). We had the root veggie salad and esquites appetizers, chicken enchiladas, grilled fish and fish tacos for mains, and the chocolate and avo mousses for dessert (they also shared the non-GF "quesadilla" which is an empanada.) Everything was fantastic! They were knowledgeable about GF and went through the menu with me right away (nothing is marked on the menu.) GF options are limited, but the options they have GF are so good that we did not feel limited. So delicious that we vowed to go back again and get the same meal! The non-GF food also looked amazing. We picked Covacha to get a takeout dinner for 5-6 people nearby because of the accolade it received from Michelin and because the descriptions of its offerings sounded very interesting. It was a Friday, and we arrived around 5:15 pm. The lady who took our order was very friendly and helpful, making good suggestions about how many dishes we should get for the number of people we have, although we already had a pretty good idea based on its online menu. The dishes were ready in about 20 minutes as she estimated, and we were excited to try them. The four main dishes (Platos) we got were Zarandeado (a whole charred catch of the day), Camarones (head-on adobo-rubbed shrimps & crispy baby potatoes), Barbacoa Tapatia (overnight roasted beef shank), and Birria (slow cooked Chicken with onion and cilantro). We also ordered three starters / side dishes: Jitomates and Tomatoes, Brussels Sprouts, and Season's Salad (charred asparagus, cherry tomatoes and frisee). Of the main dishes, the charred whole fish was the most flavorful partly due to the achiote adobo on it, but the cucumber, purslane and pickled onions also added a lot of good flavors. The head-on shrimps looked very inviting, but the shrimps themselves did not taste as good as they looked, although the crispy baby potatoes were quite tasty. The roasted beef shank tasted good. The Chicken Barria was completely immersed in liquid, but the chicken meat itself was not very flavorful; in addition, I didn't notice any onion or cilantro that were supposed to be in the dish. The Jitomates and Tomatoes were the tastiest of the vegetables dishes we got. The roasted brussels sprouts was fine but no different from what one could roast at home. I couldn't say much about the salad because I didn't have any due to a concern of consuming too much fiber as I had a lot of the other two vegetable dishes. Overall, we found only some of the dishes to be really creative and very tasty, and we were slightly disappointed because we expected more from a restaurant with the Michelin Bib Gourmand designation. read more

We were staying at a nearby hotel and after hitting the popular flea market we made a bee line for this inviting looking spot. We started with an agave mule and a margarita. Both were cold and refreshing. Our waiter recommended something we'd never seen before - Guacamole Ashes. It had a nice smoky vibe but not too overpowering. We didn't know what to expect from this little neighborhood-sized place, and were so happy to find a spot we'd love to go back to. First, don't forget to check in, because as of this writing you will be entitled to one free tequila shot, and if you ask really nicely, you might be able to get two, provided you are not here alone. Don't let the "smooth" guac fool you, it's actually very tasty - definitely a good app to start with. I couldn't decide on eggs or no eggs, and I ultimately went no eggs, which was a great choice because I ended up with the chicken enchiladas in a very delicious, kinda creamy sauce. The kind of sauce you want to mop up with anything you can get your hands on. We also had one of the burritos, which was gigantic, and the brown sauce that came with it was just what it needed for that extra punch. We did see some egg dishes flying around and they looked good - and the breakfast potatoes looked excellent. I know we only hit a small selection of the menu, we'll be back for more. We were able to get a seat immediately in Covacha (although it was busy) and service was quick. I got the enchiladas with chicken and my son got the cheese quesadillas. My friend and I were looking for something to eat before heading to Shakespeare in the park. The place is fairly close to Central Park and they had an outdoor and indoor area that wasn't crowded on a Saturday afternoon I ordered the traditional guacamole, the quesabirrias and a spicy Margarita. The consistency of the guacamole was smooth which I really liked however, it felt like it missing every other ingredient. How did they manage to do that? Idk, maybe the lack of salt didn't help. My quesabirrias was also disappointing. Although the beef was tender, it literally just tasted like meat. I honestly think maybe they're very light on any seasonings in their dishes. Even my spicy Margarita lacked spice I know we were on the upper west side so they cater to a certain clientele but yeesh. First, love the location of Covacha - it's a little further west of Central Park and is on a street with a lot of great shops. The hostess was so sweet and welcoming when I came to inquire about a party that I decided to come back for dinner that night before going to see Shakespeare in the Park. The menu is small but the margarita was excellent as well as the guacamole. I enjoyed my meal which I believe was the flautas and my friend has some type of pork. He also enjoyed his selection. They regularly filled our water. My only issue was we waited for awhile to be seated although there were quite a few empty empty and at the end they took a really long time to bring the check. I recommend coming here for cocktails and some of the smaller dishes but the food was overwhelmingly salty in a way that masked a lot of the natural flavor that comes through with Mexican cooking. If you are seated near the front, just a note that you'll be blasted with frigid air each time someone leaves or comes into the restaurant. Not helping matters are the metal seats, which will freeze your bum. I ended up just sitting on my coat and scarf for warmth. The guacamole ashes was the best thing we ordered. I thought the burnt flavor was an interesting wrinkle to a dish you'd find in every single Mexican restaurant. In terms of spice level, very mild, such that, even though I have puny spice tolerance, I was easily able to handle. If you're a fan of very spicy food, ask for some hot oil to add. Roasted tomato soup was just all right - neither the portion size nor the taste justified the $10 price tag. I liked the crispy tortilla bits, which provided a nice textural contrast, but couldn't taste much of tomato or the queso fresco. I appreciate when a place offers more than just the standard house salad and a second salad with the same old beets/goat cheese combo so my eye immediately went to the Ensalada Milpera, with Brussel sprouts, green beans, and pumpkin seeds. Lots of Brussel sprouts but I didn't see any green beans or pumpkin seeds (cucumbers instead?). The amount of dressing was a bit more heavy-handed than I would have preferred and too oily for the dish. Charred quesadilla nailed the presentation but maybe could have used some blotting - again, very greasy. I liked the side of avocado and brisket next to it but couldn't taste any of the individual ingredients of the quesadilla (mushrooms, cheese, swiss chard). Everything melded together into an oily crunch. The barbacoa was maybe the most disappointing. I only had a few bites but couldn't eat anymore on account of how salty it was. They gave some tortillas on the side but the dish needed a lot more citrus or other acidity to balance out the sodium. Reading the other reviews, it sounded like others had the opposite problem but I went home and just guzzled water (and for someone who normally runs on the perpetually dehydrated side, that's really saying something). I was so excited to check out Covacha on UWS! The menu looked amazing, and we were hungry. We came for brunch and ordered a ton of drinks (bloody mary, margaritas, spritzes, etc). Drinks were pretty good and unique. Bloody mary is really spicy! We also ordered guacamole tradicional, guacamole with ashes, and esquites to start. My boyfriend and I shared the huevos con chorizo and enchiladas, along with rice and beans. Food was good, but nothing to write home about. The burrito was pretty bland, couldn't taste the chorizo flavor much. Enchiladas were good, but was missing something in the sauce to take it to the next level.
