The polarizing reviews are so surprising, especially given what an excellent experience we had! We were in a fairly large group of eight people, but we got seated for brunch right away. Several of us were interested in the frozen margaritas, so we got a pitcher to share. (It was too thick to pour into our cups at first, so we all ended up making use of the straws in the pitcher!) The menu had tons of great options, and I went with the fried catfish po' boy with tater tots. YUM! We also all appreciated that the sauces and toppings were on the side, since this allowed us to add as much or little as we wanted to for our respective dishes. Everyone was really happy with their meals. The staff members were so nice and personable. They even shared some insider tips for the shows we were going to see. The service was excellent throughout the visit, even when it got busier in the restaurant. I loved all the eclectic decor and celebrity memorabilia. I stopped by for Sunday breakfast. I sat at the bar and had the Ranch Handler which is a little bit of all your favorite breakfast foods. I had an orange juice as well that was probably Tropicana. Service at the bar was attentive. The ranch handler was good. I thought the cheese grits were the best part of the meal as well as the biscuit. The eggs and pancake were standard. I see multiple bad reviews on here but I thought my visit was solidly average. Nothing blew me away but it also was not terrible. On a nice Sunday, the place was not full and bustling like the other Hudson St restaurants, which is probably not a good sign. They could stand to fix some things up in here. The bar itself probably needs to go - it's showing its age and the varnish is wearing away, it's also sticky. The food is overpriced but it's not more than what you would spend at your average diner in New York. I think Cowgirl is a cross between a dive bar and a diner. One review from a month ago mentions mice running around during the day but I thankfully didn't see any while I was there. Bathrooms are downstairs but I didn't use them. It's been ages since we visited Cowgirl. Last night, we were thrilled to see that the place has not changed - the food, service and ambiance are still stellar! The chili and cornbread were fabulous, as was the fried chicken sandwich with fries (THOSE FRIES! Amazing!). Get the root beer or Arnold Palmer and you won't be disappointed. I had a great experience and dinner at Cowgirl, so I am surprised by the "lowish" star rating on Yelp. A couple friends and I went to Cowgirl on a Thursday evening for an early dinner. I made reservations, but definitely didn't need them for that time as it was pretty empty. We were greeted by a lovely hostess and brought to a nice window corner table. Our waiter was very friendly and patient. He did not rush us at all and we were able to have a nice meal. I started with a mango margarita on the rocks as my drink. It was delicious! I do enjoy a good mango drink. We then split an appetizer of pulled pork nachos. They were fabulous and a perfect portion size to share between the three of us. For dinner, one of my friends had a quesadilla. I split an order of the pulled chicken enchiladas and catfish po' boy with my other friend. OMG. The catfish po' boy was delicious. And to be honest, I was kinda nervous to try it. I thought, how good can catfish be in NYC? Well this was delicious! It was super light and flakey. The jalapeno mayo sauce was on the side so I could control how much I wanted. It was so so good. So was the enchilada and the sauce. Everything just really hit the spot! Cowgirl also has some fun, festive decor which made eating at the restaurant all the more fun. Everyone was very happy with their food at Cowgirl and I am glad I gave it a shot. I have not been to Cowgirl in a few years. Unfortunately the NYSC I mentioned in my previous review closed down and I don't get to his area as much as I used to. Recently I returned to the area and after my jog I decided to treat myself to a nice lunch at Cowgirl. The interior of the restaurant was just as I remembered it. Near the entrance was the bar. To walk to the dining area you go through a small hall where a candy store stand is located (I think this is also where you can buy Cowgirl T-Shirts if you wanted). The dining area features mostly wood furniture with lots of decorations on the walls and hanging off the ceiling. It's kitschy but fun! My waitress was at my table in moments once I sat down. She took my order quickly and I had coffee in front of me in moments. I ordered "The Northerner", a three egg omelet stuffed with spinach, mushrooms and cheese. Normally it comes with Jack but I substituted Swiss. The meal also came with cheese grits and a biscuit. When I tell you that every single element of this dish was perfect, I am not exaggerating. The omelette was perfectly cooked and all the ingredients were just the right texture. The cheese grits were not just grits with shredded cheese on top. The cheese is actually cooked *into* the grits, which was wonderful! And finally, the biscuit was next level. Big, crusty on the outside but wonderfully soft on the inside and full of flavor. The entire meal was top notch. Good serve, a fun setting and wonderful food. What more can you ask for in a brunch spot? I keep leaning into the breaded catfish and tots. I make a lot of my own food so a gluttonous treat on the weekend is a must. There is a long bar at the front. You can choose to eat here too. There is another room with tables. There's a back room and bar for private parties and the bathrooms are downstairs. Rarely came to check on things. Another member of my party asked what a special on the menu was and she said she "wasn't sure, maybe a drink or a dessert." If you don't know, you first offer to go find out, not have us order unsure if we're picking a drink or a dessert. Ultimately she did do that, but the sense of indifference and unwillingness to lift a finger was a significant turn off. Service was awful. Was sat at a table on the sidewalk, outside of their normal outdoor footprint. This was fine other than the fact the waitress took over 20 minutes to take a drink order and then seemingly forgot we were there. The neighboring patron spilled an entire glass of water on my lap, and while she was very apologetic, none of the staff reacted. Which wouldn't have been as big of a deal if we had been provided with napkins and utensils. We still hadn't at this point despite being done with appetizers and specifically asking for them. The food is simply not good. No flavor to pulled pork and the burger was an overcooked lump of unseasoned beef. It didn't come the way we ordered it and all of the toppings were put on the side rather than as ordered. It took about 45 minutes for it to even be delivered to the table. All of the apps were served cold. The wine options were limited and not good. The cocktail my girlfriend ordered was what you would expect to be served at a cash only SEC dive bar south of the Dixie line for $2. read more

The worst disappointment was the catfish dinner. I ordered blackened catfish & was given a choice of broccoli or collards. I was not served catfish. It was a very flat, rather tasteless filet, probably tilapia. I was very hungry and with a friend, so I didn't want to address it at the time, but in retrospect felt I should leave an honest review. The collards also included a few stewed tomatoes, but were overcooked and quite flavorless. It also came with white rice. A very disappointing meal. My friend was happy with his veg chili. We ordered the Texas caviar, which was good but a very small portion. Fried okra had a yummy, creamy dipping sauce, but needed more for that amount of okra. Dessert was way overpriced for what it was: $14 for vanilla ice cream in the shape of a medium-sized potato with a little hot fudge, some nuts, and a tablespoon of whipped cream. Seriously!? The menu description looked great, but in reality it was completely unimaginative. It should have been more like a banana split, IMHO.
