i stopped by old fashion cafe yesterday when it was really hot outside because i needed somewhere to take a break from the heat. honestly, i really enjoyed my experience. i ordered the bruschetta, and it was especially refreshing on a hot summer day. it was topped with plenty of tomatoes and had just the right amount of moisture, making it feel light, hydrating, and satisfying. the café itself was very cute inside with a handful of tables. there was no wait and very few people inside at the time. service was wonderful, and there are bathrooms available as well. the air conditioning wasn't super strong, & it was still a little warm inside, but compared to the weather outside, it felt great. i really enjoyed both my snack and the time i spent there. since they weren't too busy, i didn't feel rushed at all, and the staff was very nice and accommodating. there's a great menu with lots of different options, like appetizers, mains, and beverages. i would totally recommend checking out this spot. read more

In New York for barely 24 hours and needed something quick. This was walking distance from Galia Lahav, so it made sense. Three of us ordered the chicken Caesar. All three were absolutely delicious. Tender thigh meat instead of dry breast, flavorful dressing, and generous Parmesan shavings. The chicken could've used a little more salt, but overall it was a strong, well-executed salad. Each Caesar was $27, and with three of us the bill came out to $100. Just something to note. The space is cozy and charming, almost tea-room adjacent, which made it a nice pause in a packed day. We ate at the Old-Fashioned Café in NYC and had a very mixed experience. Unfortunately, the service got off to a rough start. My daughter's tea order was messed up, and we were told they didn't have earl grey but had English breakfast after that is what was already ordered. The hot chocolate was honestly the worst I've ever had -- thin, flavorless, and disappointing. That said, the food was exceptional and really saved the experience. The burger was one of the best we've ever had, the yogurt bowl was outstanding, and the eggs were light, fluffy, and absolutely delicious. The space itself is very cute, especially the sublevel dining area -- small, cozy, and with great music that adds to the atmosphere. Overall, the food and vibe are top-notch, but the service didn't match the quality of the kitchen. If they can tighten that up, this place could easily be a standout. read more

This place is a real hidden gem in Soho, we went after an evening hot yoga class in need of protein and were so please to find out they serve brunch all day every day! Super intimate mood lit setting, nice staff, good food. My egg sandwich with avocado was good, pretty standard, but my friend's omelette was truly one of my favorite bites in a long time. It was so flavorful, crispy and juicy, things I don't typically expect from an omelette, delicious herb cream sauce too. I don't usually go back to places twice but I might have to for that. My friend wanted to try this place out for brunch. The space was a little tight, but cozy. We opted to sit further inside on booth seating. I was curious about the Coffee Almond Shake, thinking that it was a milkshake. When I tried to ask the waiter about what it was, the response wasn't communicated well. It turned out to be almost like a coffee martini sans alcohol. I wasn't a fan and there was barely any almond taste, so I sent it back. For the meal, I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with roasted potatoes. This was pretty tasty. The meat was tender, juicy, and well seasoned, while the bacon was nice and crispy. Cheese was satisfyingly melty. I also really liked the potatoes, which were cooked perfectly with great flavor. While the food was tasty, I couldn't fully enjoy it because our waitress kept coming to ask if we were done, even when there was more than half of the dish on the plate. This is a belowground space which had a loud, buzzy atmosphere on the evening I dined in. The menu was fairly classic Italian, and I got a pappardelle with pesto. The tanginess of the pesto and the delicate texture of the noodles hit just right. I arrived a bit late and didn't order anything else, but what others ordered seemed to be similar in quality. As with most Italian, the options for certain dietary needs are a little limited. The atmosphere was a bit cramped and loud for me, but I suspect the locals that are used to it will do just fine and I could see why it was full. read more

Would have given 0 stars if possible: humiliating and scary experience. I have been sober for 14 years. On their menu it says cocktails can be made non-alcoholic. When ordering a virgin bloody mary I said to the waitress: "I do not drink alcohol. I have been sober for 14 years and am an alcoholic. Please make sure this is virgin." When she returned she said, "Here is your mocktail." After drinking about a third of it, I started to feel funny. I approached the bartender and asked him if the we Bloody Mary that he had just made was a virgin. He replied: "no." Server was not apologetic, bartender was not apologetic, and in fact the server just pawned us off on another server and never approached us again. And when I brought it up with the manager at the end of the meal, asking for just my meal to be comped in a party of six he said "absolutely not: we took the drink off of the bill, and made you another drink" -- (which I didn't accept as I would not drink anything from that bar) -- "that's all we're going to do." He then proceeded to lecture me about how busy it is on Saturday and that it wasn't that big of a deal and that he really shouldn't have to do this. It was like they had brought me ketchup when I asked for mayo. He then looked at my party and asked them: "Are you with him or are you with me?" They obviously replied they were with me. He left and returned shortly and grabbed the credit card out of my friend's hand, without telling us that he had begrudgingly taken my French toast dinner off the bill. Did I get angry? Yes. Did I yell when I was belittled and shut down? Absolutely. Did I threaten to not pay the whole bill, to which I was informed the cops would be called on me? You betcha. But I have never been treated so terribly and dismissively in my life. Horrific dehumanizing experience. This place does not care about their customers. Stay away. read more

Went here for brunch. Let's start with the highlights: Their pasta dishes are delicious and heavy The breakfast with eggs, bacon, and toast felt healthy and tasty! The ambiance is so cute, with very cute decor and the restroom is very clean. Some things I would pass on if I were to come here again, most likely their coffee drinks. I was not impressed by the coffee beans here sadly. The bacon was cooked not crispy (I personally like crispy bacon, probably should have told them myself) but I did enjoy my meal. Overall, the service was very fast and the food came out in a decent amount of time. I do like that the menu prices are not bad. I think you can expect to spend ~$20 per person after everything. They opened three months ago and it's a super cute spot. It doesn't have that many tables, but it means that it's not cramped between tables and you have space to move around. It's easy to make a reservation for a group of 8 because they have a beautiful long table with a patterned top (altho beware the two seats in the corner by the mirror might feel cramped). We had brunch and I got the old fashioned breakfast and it was pricy at $19 but I like that it wasn't too much food (American portion sizes are ridiculous), and it wasn't super heavy. I loved tasting the olive oil on my eggs, as well as the flavor on the bacon and sausage. My friend didn't like the sausage because she's sensitive to fennel, and I don't like fennel either but I couldn't taste it in hers. Perhaps my taste buds are simply getting old (she's also 7 years younger than I am). Cute place! I went for a Galentine's dinner and the cafe really leaned into the Valentine's theme. Service was a bit slow, and food I think was alright. We ordered a burrata appetizer that was excellent (4/5), the Apulian sandwich which was smaller than expected and housed in a English muffin (2.5/5), and a carbonara pasta (3.5/5) that was a bit heavy on the parmesan to the point that it was quite overwhelming. There are certainly restaurants with better Italian fare, but this place has the potential to be a neighborhood staple. My friends and I came across this place while walking the streets of NYC. We were very pleasantly surprised! When you walk in your a greeted with an modern yet cozy environment lit with warmth. 4.5 stars overall: I came across Old Fashion one day after work and loved the vibe and ambiance, as well as the drinks (so good!). I ended up having my 30th birthday party here after my sister suggested it (I took her here after my first visit). The party was great overall re: drinks, friendly environment, some good food dishes. There was some back and forth regarding logistics leading up to and at the beginning of the event, something to keep in mind if you don't have patience. Again service was super friendly throughout which to me made up for the back and forth (ex's figuring out how to order for the birthday, payment, table set-up, etc. at the beginning, re-confirming party size / time several times beforehand which is better than the other end of it!). I still love this place overall and will note some specifics: - great, friendly environment from three brothers who know how to create a good atmosphere. inviting, cozy space with a modern feel - awesome drinks: wild negroni, dibs, and I liked the French 75 I ordered. my party overall really enjoyed the drinks - good food: only tried dinner menu, liked the burger, cheese plate, and some pasta dishes. I got the poke tartare but it had too much sauce on it - service: as mentioned earlier, service was a bit confusing at the beginning of the party but that's also on me for not confirming those details beforehand. bartender did a great job getting drinks out as it was just him and about ~30 people. the waitress taking orders could have introduced herself and checked in more, which often resulted in people going up to the bar instead of ordering with her I was between a 4 and a 5 star review, but am leaning on the atmosphere / drinks and giving some slack since they're a decently new spot. A cute place, food is average, unfortunately service is very slow and ruined the entire experience. What I mean by this is when you need things with your meal and they constantly forget and then you've finished and you never what you needed .. it ruins the meal. There was a large group of us and many of us had a similar experience. Things were brought out late and we had to ask repeatedly for items. The menu is also pretty limited.
