Came here for dinner and was really looking forward to quality Mexican food (we were STARVING), but I was disappointed in the quality of food here. All of our party agreed that our dishes were pretty mediocre. The "pico de gallo" on the tacos and "side salad" was actually just shredded romaine and diced tomato; no difference whatsoever. I ordered the chile relleno and was disappointed by the very heavy breading. I couldn't finish my food because of the overwhelming amount of breading and sauce in my dish. I get that most Mexican dishes have a green or red sauce on them, but the sauce on my chile relleno literally tasted like marinara. The only thing that made our experience better was our polite waitress, who was very attentive. I just wish the food quality was a better- especially for the price. For ~$20 per person, I'd recommend eating somewhere else on the island. read more

First of all I don't know how this place even got three stars. BE WARNED BEFORE YOU COME HERE: their service sucks, their prices suck, their food and drinks also SUCK. Akin to some of the other reviews about this place, not only are the servers snotty and rude, THEY ARE RACIST. Even though we arrived earlier than a bunch of parties they would seat white people who would walk up without a reservation before us. When we saw some outdoor seating tables open, they said it was only for "1" person, but when a white couple of two came they sat them at that exact table. Plus, after talking to other groups waiting outside this establishment, they said the same thing and were all people of color as well. We all just stood outside watching about 10 groups of white people get seated while After 20 minutes of waiting we decided to get our food to go... Big mistake. It took another 45 minutes to get our food and it was DISGUSTING. Plus, don't even thinking about asking for more chips and salsa that's supposed to be "complimentary," they'll charge you $10 more. On top of that they asked us if we wanted our margaritas while we were waiting and we said yes. However, after paying they came out and said we would have to wait and take it with our food. On top of that they were full of melted ice and overpriced for what you got. Again, DONT SUPPORT THIS POORLY RUN, RACIST, and EXTREMELY INATTENTIVE BUSINESS!!! read more

Food eh it was alright , customer service very questionable . We are from LA County so we are used to asking for a glass of water and we get it in a glass when we asked the guy he said it with this tone no one serves water in glass for years I wanted to laugh and say well maybe in this island but everywhere else yes they do . We asked for breakfast he said no it's not busy enough so hubby and I shared a wet burrito asked if they can cut it in half he says no but you can . Like eeeew ! read more

We came here because the menu look good and we were hungry, it was. Only one waiter running around taking orders and bringing drinks and food to everyone,It didn't took him long to come and take our order, and to bring the food to us, the food was very good, I order cheese enchiladas and it was a good amount of food, it's filling, the margarita was great too, they only serve water bottles if you ask for water. Overall was good for us. read more

Yaaaassss Coyote Joe's. Squeezed me and my family of four plus two dogs I before breakfast stopped serving. The coffee was trash but the food was a happy medium between price, quality, and proportion. I had the chiliquilles which is my goto breakfast dish so im familiar with authentic and "authentic". My partner and I did a 7 mile hike earlier that morning and this place fueled us right back up. The salsa was ideal and the spices were not too overwhelming where we can enjoy the flavor. I should have payed attention to the reviews but it looked like a cool spot so we tried it out. We tried several items and all were subpar, even the chips were stale. We also tried a few of the margaritas, including the giant bowl, margarita and I was incredibly disappointing. read more

Ordered chicken wings here for to go which took awhile which was fine.. When I opened it there's no Ketchup or Ranch, which I thought again was fine even though the chicken wings look dry... they gave us 2 small stacked up paper plates only to find out that the bottom one was dirty! It has lettuce and sauce! The chicken wings definitely have no lettuce on it. How discusting is this.. so disappointed.. read more

Great late night dining spot in Catalina Island if you're vacationing there. Most restaurants are closed early during this pandemic on Catalina Island. They serve Mexican food. The food was pretty good. They have outdoor dining as well. read more

Came during summer vacation for a nice family dinner. All I have to say is the Mexican food at this restaurant is the most legit compared to another that I won't name. I usually judge a place by if they can get the rice and beans right. This place was on point with them. I had the chicken fajitas and I found them to be very tasty with generous portions. My daughter had the the pozole and tamales which she said were very good. Similar to home cooking. My wife had the shrimp cocktail which was delicious. The restaurant is nicely decorated on the inside with murals. They have plenty of TVs which is a plus if your a sports fan. The only thing we found annoying is that they have a bar inside that is not separate from the rest of the restaurant since it's is so small inside. The bar patrons got really noisy at one point, but the servers reassured us that they told them to calm down. All in all do try Coyote Joe's! Especially if you love good Mexican food when on the island. read more

Came here for breakfast with the girls before heading back to LA. We had to seat ourselves (Party of 5) Wish I could give it a full 5 stars but the service was not 100%. We had to flag someone down to take our order after sitting there for at least 10 mins. The food was not as great either. I am trying to be fair when I write this; but it's kinda hard. The food here is horrible, even by Catalina standards. My girlfriend and I went here for breakfast the other day and could hardly stomach the food. For a Mexican restaurant this place is a shame. We had some white washed food that was old, dry and just thrown together over some tortilla chips and smothered with some salsa outta a jar. The prices here are super duper high because everything needs to be shipped from San Pedro or Long Beach. That I can understand, because of the price, but at least make it semi-edible people! They need to put more effort into the food they prepare; if it looks like crap and you know it's old - don't serve it! Unfortunately we had to have a few bites because of the price but we're glad to pay the $50 bill and get the hell outta there. The next time we go back; it will not be at this joint - save your self a dime and just go here for the alcohol - you can't mess that up. read more

I hosted a party here last week...it was always our favorite spot to eat when in Avalon! The service was amazing...the waitress staff, Leah and Maria, were so friendly and accommodating to all our guests ,..they worked for 3 hours making sure everyone's food was to their liking and no one went hungry, the manager made sure our every need was met and the bartender poured delicious drinks! The food, the ambiance ( we love sitting on the heated porch watching the people go by) and the service is wonderful! We can't wait for another taco and margarita soon! Highly recommend! read more

So we were starving for breakfast and saw Coyote Joe's. Once we were seated we were ignored for a good time. We were about to walk out when the server finally came. We ordered very simple items right off the menu. Both our orders were completely wrong. The wait was long enough so we just started eating. My wife was actually eating the breakfast burrito when the waiter came back said "that's not yours" and yanked the plate off the table. The food was far less than stellar, kind of what your kids might bring you to surprise you... when the bill came, it had all the correct order info not what we actually ate. 20 bucks for a gas station quality burrito. Do NOT recommend. read more

I only gave the 3 stars because they had options for my vegan friends. I'm going to rant YET AGAIN about Mexican restaurants frying their tortilla chips in the same oil as floured dishes. There's NO reason tortilla chips shouldn't be GF. And my husband and I both had horrible indigestion a couple of hours later, which was not a good idea on the ferry going home. My white wine and my husband's margarita were both quite good. read more

I have been here twice already this summer, and hope to be this September. I came here with 8 people the first time, and the 2 guys can't remember their name right now provided me great service, the food is so GOOD, the chicken wings is EXCELLENT, my kids would say they're on FIRE!!! The 2nd time I came with 16 of us, and again received great service, this time the guy told the 2 ladies to treat us good and they did. And again their chicken was FIRE... The bathroom are clean. And I cant wait to go back. See you again hopefully 9/12th. read more

This place was just okay we ordered the carnitas special which was $10 compared to the $21 so for what we got I would say it was not bad the rice and beans tasted like they came out of a can but all in all for the money it was not bad we had a couple beers and moved on I would not go back here just because it didn't blow me away and they were really really expensive for what you didn't get read more

I told the waitress and she tried to say it was just egg BS as you can see by my picture I posted. This place far exceeded our expectations. We were starving and wanted something fast and simple. Was it fast? Yes! Simple? Even better, it was delicious! Worst food I've ever had. Probably same level as El Pollo Loco. These people need to step up their game. Bland tasteless not fresh. Sloppy. Not only was the food terrible but the service was slow and not great too. Sat down with 5 kids and waited for 20 min for them to even come by to our table. Kids were hungry thirsty and antsy didn't even get water at the table until after she came to take our order and I had to ask. The place wasn't busy either. Not impressed and won't be coming back I'd rather starve. read more

In 1996 the the shop next door became available so we knocked out the wall, got a liquor license and turned it into a full service restaurant. We decided to expand again in 2000 and added a small patio, then in 2010 we remodeled and enlarged our patio. During the Summer of 2015 Coyote Joe's was taken over by new management who plan on preserving Coyote Joe's special legacy by making small improvements in the overall restaurant experience.

Overall, food came out quickly, and the staff was very friendly - recommend for a casual dinner when you are on the island. Note that they only do bottled water.

The pasta was also a bit overcooked and tasted pretty ordinary--nothing particularly special or memorable. If you're visiting the island, I'd recommend this place for the atmosphere and ambiance. But if you're hungry and looking for really good food, I personally wouldn't recommend it. That being said, our server was very nice and attentive. In fact, it was probably the best service we experienced during our time on the island.

Absolutely appalling experience at Coyote Joe's. During our meal, my 12 year old was served a drink containing a cellophane cigarette wrapper. Let that sink in: trash associated with a cigarette ended up in a child's beverage. It's hard to imagine a more obvious failure of basic cleanliness and quality control. As bad as that was, the response from management was somehow worse. The manager was dismissive, combative, and barely apologetic. Instead of treating the situation with the seriousness it deserved, the only thing initially offered was to comp the contaminated drink. Apparently, serving a child a beverage with cigarette-related trash in it is worth the value of a single drink in their eyes. We then had to ask for the chips and salsa to be removed from the bill as well. Nothing additional was offered, and there was no genuine effort to make things right. No real apology. No concern for our experience. No accountability. Restaurants make mistakes. What customers remember is how those mistakes are handled. Finding foreign debris in a drink is already unacceptable. Responding with indifference, excuses, and a rude attitude is what turns a mistake into a complete failure of customer service. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences we've ever had, not because of the wrapper alone, but because of management's shockingly poor response. We will never return, and I would strongly encourage anyone considering dining here to think twice. read more

So I just got back from Catalina and I'm still reeling from the most epic drink ever - Buffalo Milk, yeah I know, weird name, but trust me, it's a game changer. We hit up Coyote Joe's, because, Mexican food, duh, and I was on a mission to try this mythical drink. We scored a seat outside, because people watching is the best, and the weather was straight fire. We ordered the cheese enchiladas plate, because, basic, and my wife got the Birria Tacos, which were, no joke, amazing. My enchiladas, meh, but hey, I wasn't there for the food, I was there for the Buffalo Milk. Our waitress brings out these two glasses, one big, one small, and I'm thinking, okay, this is it, and oh man, it did not disappoint. I tasted the small glass, and I get it, the hype is real. It's like crack, but, you know, in a good way. I downed that small glass, and then proceeded to steal some of my wife's, sorry, not sorry. I'm making this drink my go-to from now on. Major props to the bartender, you're a genius. Only bummer, no free chips and salsa, what's up with that? The decor was on point, bright, festive, the whole shebang, and our waitress was awesome, wish I'd caught her name. All in all, Coyote Joe's is a must try, and don't even think about leaving without ordering the Buffalo Milk. read more

This place has a great location! It's in the center of town and is perfect for people watching on the patio. They have heating lamps outside and a heater inside which is really nice in the winter. The Carbonara was rich and flavorful, but I'd again suggest either sharing the pasta or having kids order off of the kid's menu. Kid's Menu offerings include Spaghetti with Meatballs, Fettuccine al Fredo, or Buttered Noodles. Overall, this restaurant provides generous servings of solid Italian food with the "island markup" prices we come to accept in Catalina.
