    Dumplings, corn and fried apples.

Service was GREAT! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restaurant was clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] However, we have never been to a Cracker Barrel where everything came out cold. My husband did send back the gravy, as it had the film on top from when it gets cold, and it was lumpy. Rather than complain that everything was cold I ate the cold fried apples and a little of my dumplings. My husband ate his cold food. He was hungry. I just boxed the dumplings up and the corn. I can heat it up at home later. You know nothings better than hot fried apples, corn and dumplings. But tonight was not the night for that. It will be a long time before we return. 3 stars because the staff was so good.

Can't go wrong with Cracker Barrel, and the Athens location delivers on the high standards of friendliness and good food that is expected from this restaurant chain. I had Momma's pancake breakfast (3 pancakes, 2 eggs, & sausage). The pancakes were fluffy in the middle with a little bit of a crust around the edges. It was fantastic! I will say they were busy for a Saturday morning, but after about 20 minutes we got a seat. No big. Check these guys out if you're passing through Athens!

absolutely horrible. i've never been more disappointed. we got there around 6pm on a monday and were immediately sat. our server was obviously new and by no means is any of this her fault but our food took an hour to an hour and a half to even begin to come out. someone in our party got pancakes and they ended up being basically cardboard and the french toast were just horrible. even syrup couldn't help them. our waitress got sat two big parties while the other servers had no tables. she had no help. the manager was about as helpful as a box of rocks. 100% fake. to make matters worse, i had an interview here the next day. i have never canceled something so quick. they treat their employees like they're scum on their shoes. absolutely ridiculous.

Great customer service and I greatly appreciate their accountability/ willingness to make up for our previous visit. Last night we started with the crab croquettes, STELLAR. Absolutely loved and devoured these. The crunch on the croquette was to die for, topped with a refreshing crab salad, perfect. For my entree, I had the lamb rack with house potatoes & broccolini. My boyfriend had the blackened catfish with the grits. Both dishes were phenomenal . To finish up we tried their new chocolate strawberry bread pudding, so rich and delicious. This restaurant is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots in Northern Alabama. Go give them a try! We'll 100% be back.

This seemed to want to be a foodie destination. The half, fried chicken included a small drumstick, small wing, piece of breast, and another piece that was unidentifiable but might have been a thigh. It had a spicy sweet sauce covering, which we opted to have on the side. That was a good choice because the hint of cayenne was still too much for one diner. We asked about the slaw -- whether it had a cream or vinegar dressing. The server described it as a "creamy vinegar." It made no difference because the dressing was so understated that the side tasted more like chopped cabbage than anything else. Disappointing. Finally, I asked the server whether the grilled green beans were actually that. I was more curious than anything else because grilled green beans would take longer to cook. She said yes, they were grilled. I don't think so. They came out fairly quickly and were pretty universally blackened all over like they were cooked in a skillet. Once our food was delivered, we never saw our server again until I asked for the check. So, what I believe was intended to be an elevated dining experience was simply under executed.

There are two buffet islands, one with main course and sides and some desert, the other with a salad bar and more desert options. There is also an ice cream machine that my wife swears tastes just like Chik-fil-a's. The food is almost all southern, and some of it got rotated out while we ate (the chicken and dumplings gave way to country fried steak and gravy). Fried Chicken, pulled pork, mashed potatoes, fried okra, corn, green beans, man n cheese -- the list goes on and on. By and large, the food was exceptional. The fried chicken was moist and the breading is flavorful, the mashed potatoes were good. Pulled pork was succulent and the BBQ sauce was great. The strawberry shortcake was delicious. Only downsides from my visit was that the corn bread was a tad dry and not sweat (that's a preference thing) and there was no gravy for the mashed potatoes. That being said the yeast rolls are great. The chicken fried steak got rotated in with some pepper gravy (a bit watery) but these were the only nitpicks I found with my visit. Overall the best southern food and best buffet near Huntsville. My waitress ('Granny') was hustling, she made sure the plates were cleared and the drinks stayed full. Everyone seemed to know her and she was able to be friendly with the locals while taking care of business. All of the employees I saw were busy, wiping down the buffet lines, bringing in heaps of food and just making it a great experience. The value was phenomenal -- $12.50 for adults and $7 for kids. I wish they served Coke products and lived next door then they'd be perfect. If you're reading about this place and you live in Hunstville, its worth the drive. If you're a local, its probably a staple and you already know. 5 stars, would recommend. Thanks!

The star of the meal was the fried green tomatoes. They were thick, juicy, perfectly fried, and honestly didn't need any dipping sauce or condiment at all. They're some of the best I've had. Minnie and I both ordered the whole catfish with mashed potatoes and fried green tomatoes. We absolutely demolished our plates. The catfish was delicious, and the mashed potatoes tasted genuinely homemade. The brown gravy was rich and flavorful and paired perfectly with them. My mom ordered the 4-vegetable plate with fried green tomatoes, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and fried okra. She loved everything on her plate. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the restaurant was busy the entire time we were there. There was a steady stream of both dine-in customers and takeout orders, which tells you a lot about the place's reputation. My only complaint is the wait time. Food takes a while to come out, especially if you're ordering fried items, but they do warn you ahead of time. The quality makes it clear they're cooking to order, so if you decide to visit, just be prepared to be patient. If someone asked me where to take an out-of-town guest for authentic Southern cooking, G's Country Kitchen would be at the top of my list. The food is homemade, comforting, and exactly what people imagine when they think of classic Southern cuisine. Overall, the food was fantastic, the service was welcoming, and it's easy to see why G's Country Kitchen is a go-to spot for homestyle country cooking. We'll definitely be back.

This was Southern hospitality at its finest, wrapped in incredible food and genuine warmth from the moment our Forest Service and Alabama A&M team walked through the door. The owner and staff were extremely kind, welcoming, and hospitable to our group, treating us less like customers and more like honored guests. The owner personally sat with our team, walking us through the menu item by item, sharing stories, and offering recommendations on his favorite dishes. That personal touch set the tone for the whole lunch and made the meal feel both special and deeply personal. The food itself was soul-satisfying in every way. The fried chicken was perfectly seasoned with a crispy exterior and juicy interior, the kind of dish that makes you pause after the first bite. The catfish was especially delicious as well, tender, flavorful, and cooked just right, embodying everything you hope for in classic country cooking. And the banana pudding was a standout, instantly transporting me to memories of dining in Savannah, with that rich, comforting, homemade taste you feel in your soul. From start to finish, everything about our visit to G's Country Kitchen was outstanding...the hospitality, the conversation, the food, and the feeling of being truly cared for. It's easy walking distance from the square and I enjoyed wandering a bit on my way over. Parking is street parking but I didn't find it too challenging, at least on a week day. The inside is showing its age but was clean enough. The restaurant is a little narrow and cramped though. One of the waitresses spoke to me loudly from where she was seated at a table near the back of the restaurant and told me to sit where I liked. She brought me a menu shortly after. The menu is somewhat limited, with basic breakfasts and lunches, to include omelets, biscuits, hamburgers, club sandwiches, etc. I like a simple menu done well. It was a little early for lunch, so I wound up ordering two scrambled eggs, which comes with biscuits and gravy or toast with grits. Any other side is basically a la carte, which isn't necessarily my preference but ultimately the pricing comes out to about the same as if you'd had a more extensive meal combination, so I suppose it works out nicely for those who want smaller, simpler breakfasts. I don't care for biscuits and gravy so I ordered toast and grits, then added on bacon and an order of hash browns. Sweet tea to drink. My meal was ~$15 when all was said and done, which I think is acceptable. The inside of the diner is kind of echo-y. Three other patrons were inside, all seated at different tables but all conversing with each other rather loudly (and seemingly not eating anything??) the entire time I was there. This isn't WSD's fault and I don't hold it against them, just want to make others aware of the atmosphere in case they're looking for an extra quiet location to eat. Service was adequate; not super friendly and more reactive than proactive (eg, no one ever came to check if I liked my food okay or if I needed a refill; pretty much the only time I got any attention once my food was dropped off was when I stood up to walk to the register). But they weren't rude or anything and my food came out in a timely manner. I didn't need anything special so it worked out. My food was okay. The toast was cooked well but wound up a little soggy somehow. I don't like grits much but I gave these a try; they weren't bad as far as grits go. The bacon was cooked fairly well. The hash browns were my favorite part and were actually quite crispy, which is how I like them. The eggs were the weak point and were fairly unevenly cooked, with some bits being thin and crispy and others so runny even I was a little skeptical (and I like my scrambled eggs on the softer side). The sweet tea was also a little watery. I'd give the food a 3.5/5 overall. Decent place for a local diner meal.

Arrived at 1:15 (door and Google said they closed at 2). Disappointed that this "diner" didn't have soup on their limited menu, but after a quick glance at the menu ordered a simple cheeseburger and fried bologna & cheese sandwich. My GF asked if they could do grilled onions on her burger, and got an grunted "we could do that". The server then asked whether we'd like chips or hash browns with our sandwiches and we opted for chips. I added an iced tea. The food was dropped off (still not a smile or welcoming word spoken). The smallish burger was slightly larger than a McDonald's single burger and the bologna sandwich featured a single 1/8" slice of bologna and a single slice of Kraft American cheese. The burger was reportedly fine and my sandwich was something my 4 year old granddaughter could've prepared. It was explained that the chips were additional (we didn't ask for them, they were casually offered). Never implied that they were an add-on. The unhappy server spent the entire time which we were there (20 minutes total) with her jackets on and bag on the table, staring at us to finish this subpar, overpriced, lunch. I am not one to slam a small business (see my 200+ reviews). My recommendation would be to chose ANYWHERE ELSE to support in Athens. The attitude was poor, the food below average in quality and low on the value scale. Really a bad experience overall. These ungrateful folks don't deserve your time or money.

This restaurant is across the street from the fairly popular Francesco's Italian restaurant. Having been there before, I didn't have any troubles locating this place. The parking lot is a little rugged in spots but at least there's plenty of space. The inside is a little sparse but there's ample seating and some kind of cool drawings hanging on the walls. A portrait of who I can only assume to be Minnie Lee is near the entrance. Food is served cafeteria style by some very nice people. Seriously, the service was so warm and sweet. We felt very welcomed there. We both decided on fried chicken for lunch. My mom got the last breast from the batch so I wound up with a thigh, which isn't my favorite piece but I still like it okay. You can have more than two sides if you wish, but we didn't. I chose yams and fried potatoes as mine, while my mom got yams and cabbage. Note that their cabbage is cooked with sausage. For bread, they offered standard cornbread muffins or hot water cornbread, which the friendly staff recommended (good choice!). We both opted for sweet tea to drink. I'm not sure of the price because of course my mom snuck in and paid for both of our meals before I could notice! Lol. We found a clean booth and dug in quickly. Overall, the food was pretty good! This isn't necessarily a new favorite soul food place for me, but I'd definitely come back. The best item was honestly the cabbage! My mom let me taste a bite. So flavorful and perfect texture. This is real, southern-style cabbage (which is to say, probably not great for you...but quite tasty!). The hot water cornbread was also really good. It's different than the hot water cornbread I've had in the past; this version was very crispy on the outside with super soft, almost gooey, corny inside. It was yummy. The yams were also solid! Not the best I've ever had (flavor kind of one-note), but they were sweet and soft. The fried potatoes and fried chicken were both just okay. The fried potatoes weren't super hot or crispy, but the added flavor from the onions was nice. The fried chicken's breading was crispy and flavorful enough, but the meat, even on the thigh, was a bit dry. Neither were bad, but if I return in the future, I'd probably try something else first. We were too full for dessert, but they had pecan pie and banana pudding on display. Overall, lovely service and tasty food make this a solid option in the area.
