This is my favorite salon for curly hair cuts ever. I've been here several times now and have had a great experience every time. The staff is so friendly and organized. The prices are reasonable and straightforward. I have had cuts, color, and treatments with Dawn, Alex, and Darian and I was very happy with each and would reccomend any of the three. But I must say Darian has given me the very best short curly haircuts I have ever had and I never want a cut from anyone else! He really understands cutting my texture and creating the overall shape that I want. At my first appointment with him I had pixie length hair that needed serious fixing. We talked at length about the plan for the cut and I said it sounded good, but let him know my ultimate plan is to grow out to a chin length bob. He then thought and came up with a totally new plan that was perfect for my long term goal. I was glad I said that instead of just going along with it, but also felt I was in really good hands with someone who knows what he's doing. And I was right! I had a great experience getting a haircut with Dawn. She listened to me and considered my lifestyle / nonexistent morning routine and was able to come up with a cut that is SO easy to style that even I can manage it! She also suggested a new super low maintenance hair routine that I can't wait to try. We both agreed my attempts at using shampoo bars have left my hair dry so she helped me come up with some budget-friendly, natural solutions. And, she was easy to talk to for the hour, none of that strained small talk you sometimes have with stylists. Honestly cannot recommend Crafted and Dawn highly enough, I'm thrilled with how everything turned out! read more

I paid more (before a 20% tip) for a somewhat standard men's haircut (hard-part) here than I did in Silicon Valley (again before a 20% tip). It was my first and last time going here. I should have done my due diligence checking the prices before getting a haircut, but I suppose that's what I get for trusting Yelp's #1 recommended location in the area. They billed my cut as a "long" cut for $50 (the size/amount of hair cut determines the cost). When I came in they said my hair was at 1.5" and they cut it down to 1". I would have been okay with it costing $40 (still more expensive than the $35 Silicon Valley one). Quality was the same as my usual $17 cut at Hairzoo in Rochester, NY. read more

This poor review is no reflection on the hair stylists or shampoo person at Crafted. From what I've seen they do excellent work. I'm from out of town and have been stopping there after my massages to get a shampoo. I just feel better knowing I'll look better without greasy locks. I was charged $5 which I thought quite fair, always tipping 60%. My last visit I was informed that the next time the price would go up to $15 according to the owner. This review is the about a greedy owner losing a not very important, yet highly satsfied customer. I will find another salon. read more

I adore this salon. My stylist is Josh, who I followed from another establishment, and I'm glad I did! Josh is incredible. His coloring and his cuts are completely on point. Josh is adept at creating styles that work with your lifestyle and his colors are similarly adaptive. Working with a tight budget, I appreciate that Josh can create shapes and colors that I can maintain without it costing a fortune while still having the style and color I want. Additionally, I always look forward to seeing Josh. His engaging personality makes those hours at the spot for a cut and color feel like fun with a friend instead of a long necessity! I went to Crafted this past weekend to get my first haircut in almost a year. I have curly 3b hair and Dawn was the stylist who cut it. She is fantastic! She put me at ease and explained to me what she was doing at every step. She gave my hair some body and bounce again, and also gave me some tips for taking care of my hair. The price point was a little more than what I'm used to, but it wasn't obscene either. It was money well spent for me. It helps that Dawn, as well as everyone else I met there, is genuinely friendly and skilled at what they do. I'm very happy and will definitely return. read more

I should have listened to other one - two star reviews that were posted on yelp before going in. I am giving this one star rating based on an extremely long wait time (I was there for 5 hours and not because I was being worked on, but because there were a number of scheduling conflicts) and how unsatisfied I am with the color job and services provided. The only positive aspect of my Crafted Hair Studio experience was the receptionist as she was extremely friendly and inviting. However, I will not be going back to this salon. read more

Shelly is a real piece of work. She did not cut or colour my hair but served as dishonest gate keeper between me and the stylist. Stylist claimed she did balayage, charged me $250, twice but it was a far far far cry from balayage. Stylist said she would fix it when I had more time, as I waited four and a half hours while she had to take her sick colleagues' clients. I needed to leave unhappy with what she did to my hair as my newborn was waiting at home to be breast fed. Stylist told me not to worry as she would fix it but when I tried to call to schedule the fix-scary Shelly answered, made up stuff saying I came late( I called and re-scheduled my appt and was on time- according to Shelly, that means I was late?) and prohibited me from speaking to my stylist whom I'm sure would have fulfilled her promise to fix my hair and 'balayage'. Shelly got in the way and was totally dishonest, unprofessional and passive aggressive all rolled up in a big mean mess. Don't go to crafted for balayage- they pretty clueless and charge almost $300 for ruining your hair. Shelly ruins relationships of trust between stylist and client, unnecessarily and very unprofessionally. I'm not naming the stylist here as the stylist knew I was unhappy and had to leave and was willing to do the needed to fix it. I reached out to remedy the situation to only get mean, unprofessional Shelly despite asking for the owner and the stylist to discuss why I did not think it was a balayage at all, and discuss a strategy to fix it. I called three times and sent three emails only to be shut down by guess who? Shelly. What a shame as it could have easily been resolved. Most others would be absolutely irate with what was done to my hair, I was calm and respectful and just wanted us to discuss and fix it. It was my first color in my whole life and it was a sad horrible mess- like a high school kid who messes with packaged dye in the bathroom- nothing skillful about it, not balayage at all just a sad orange brassy mess. I am updating review as Rachael the owner, has commented that I harassed them in the salon. I was calm and respectful- Shelly even commented that I seemed happy and calm when I left the salon. So now they say I harassed them? If harassment is done with a smile and a 'don't worry, it is only hair comment, it will grow back, right?' The stylist was apologetic and I was also apologetic as I could not stay for hour five as I had to go breast feed my baby. I paid them without hesitation, tipped the stylist as I felt bad for her having to do less than her best as she was suddenly tasked with covering other clients and I was confident that when the stylist had more undisturbed time( as she was cutting the hair of clients of her sick colleague while trying to do my 'balayage') my hair would be fixed. Rachael, with her posted comment- now has also proven to be as dishonest and unprofessional as Shelly. They took hundreds of dollars, destroyed my hair, lied and now are playing victim by claiming I harassed them? Oh my, get it together people. I do feel sorry for the stylist as seems an oppressive workplace with Rachael and Shelly. Too many other professional stylists in Baltimore to deal with the drama, unprofessionalism and lies at crafted- I guess hair is not the only thing crafted by Rachael and company, lies are too. I suggest people go elsewhere. read more

Darian was incredibly skilled at cutting my wavy curly hair as well as attentive to my preferences and questions. I learned so much about styling and care that I feel encouraged and excited to rock my curls. I can't recommend Darian enough as well as the very helpful reception/salon staff. Had a great experience with Vanessa yesterday. First time seeing her or going to the salon . My husband actually said that this was his favorite haircut that I've received! She respected my wishes and kept my hair long, but added beautiful layers to pump up the volume. She was pleasant and the appointment was fairly quick. I'll be back for sure. read more

Upon observing the hairstylists and customers receiving haircuts, I noticed that Crafted is very good at doing edgy hairstyles and I think that they should be commended in this regard. However, I sought to preserve my classic hairstyle and after the rushed, sloppy result, I don't think that this hair salon matches my personal aesthetic. My hairstylist, although pleasant, was rather rough, turning my neck and pushing my head back in order to keep my head still. I also didn't enjoy the vibe at this salon because she spent most of her time chatting with her coworkers as opposed to speaking to me. I also thought that this was a rather pricey haircut given that she didn't wash my hair. Although I appreciate that she offered to modify my haircut should I find anything grievously wrong with it within a week's time, I just don't think that I'll be going back. read more

Rachael and her amazing team of talented folks NEVER disappoint. I'm REALLY not great with hair, and they are always so attentive to face shape and working with your hair's natural way of being... they cut my hair in a way I don't even need to style it!! (Which is great, since I won't.) and when my daughter wanted to get some blues/greens/purples over the summer... they treated her like she was Dorothy in that Wizard of Oz scene. Got my roots lifted and balayage highlights from Tiffany. It was perfect. I asked for a sunkissed look and it was just what I was looking for and more. Very natural, and complemented my skin tone (whiter than white). Cut was great too. Usually have to really be outspoken about how I want shorter side bangs rather than hella long ones (even then most stylists don't budge). Again, Tiffany delivered in the best way possible. I had another appointment at Crafted today and I thought it was about time I remembered to leave a review! I've been a customer there for a little over a year now, usually coming about once a month and I'm always so happy with my experience. I get my hair dyed platinum blonde from a very dark blonde and the upkeep just isn't even a hassle anymore because I enjoy my time there so much. Shelly at reception is awesome and so kind! I'm now regularly working with Bethany and she's helped me to understand exactly every step in the process of bleaching and toning and my hair always looks AMAZING! I have pretty thick curly hair, and I won't get my hair cut anywhere else in Baltimore. I used to go to the owner, Rachel Epstein, who I chose because of her good reviews and because she had curly hair like mine, and it looked great! When she stopped cutting hair she recommended Darian Gavin, and he is a master at cutting curly hair. Somehow I keep the length without the poof, or the dreaded triangle shape. Anya is the best Esthetican I have ever had the pleasure of being beautified by! She perfected my eyebrows and it framed my face perfectly proving she has an eye for working with individual facial symmetry and making people the best version of themselves possible! While she gave me a relaxing facial, she gave me helpful hints on how to treat for acne and maintain a clear face. She rid my nose of the obnoxious black heads and made my face soft and clean! Had a great curly hair experience with Darian. I didn't want anything too dramatically different, just a bit of length off and for my curls to be as defined as possible. He really listened, and explained all the steps he was taking, and advised how best to care for my curls. I'm very happy with my cut. I loved how it looked when I left the studio, which is rare for me with most places. Everyone in the studio was nice and friendly too. Definitely recommend! read more

When I moved to Baltimore, I found Rachael through a website that recommended stylists fir naturally curly hair. When I first met her, she had a studio in the basement of her home. Bar none, the way she cut my hair was the best it has ever been cut. She also excelled at hair color. I was a bore just trying to cover my gray hair back to a color similar to what it was was, but I loved watching her color other people's hair purple, pink, green or even multiple shades. She's a true artist. I also admired her business sense. She had a vision to move and expand her business. It took a while until she found the perfect place, but once she did, she built a wonderful shop with a very cool vibe. I always looked forward to my appointments with Rachael. She was not just my stylist. She became my friend. She's warm, personable and extremely bright. I was always amazed by her strength to run her own business, but she is determined and has it together. Had a consultation to talk about exactly what I wanted. Stylist was on the same page. When I returned a few weeks later for my appointment she had thought we were doing something way off of what we talked about so I showed her the same reference pictures and she kept pushing what she thought, probably because it wouldn't take as long. We agreed on doing what I wanted just a shade or so lighter. The plan was a balayage from the beginning. I payed over $500 for her to do a terrible bleach job leaving me with terrible roots that looked like I had let grown out for over a month. I called the next day and was informed that the stylist had messed up on two or three other people in that same week!!!! So they fit me in to make up for the mistake a few days later. The second stylist was so nice and seemed to also know what I had been originally going for and was prepared to do it. However after dying my hair, which was supposed to be red-ish, it was bright purple, even after adding brown over top of it. She had said "I know this isnt funny for you but I don't know what happened" and I was honest that it still wasn't what I was looking for. Two trips to this very expensive salon to get two bad experiences and bad hair. I wouldn't recommend at all. read more

I walked in for an appointment with Nicole that I had made two days before, and proceeded to get one of the best haircuts I've gotten in a long time for half the price I normally pay. The whole studio is so sweet, trendy, and welcoming. Nicole followed my instructions exactly, and asked for my opinion on how things were looking every step of the way. Just had a great experience getting my hair cut at Crafted by Dawn! I wasn't really sure what I wanted, and Dawn did a great job of listening openly to my thoughts, sharing her own ideas for my hair, and giving me an excellent cut that'll keep me looking good for weeks (if not months!). This is a somewhat late review, but after more than a month of looking in the mirror at my awful haircut I was finally pushed to write a review. Anyways, so I called to make an appointment and the receptionist told me that an apprentice was available to cut my hair at the time I needed. I said that was fine since I needed a really simple trim done. I had been growing out my hair from some time from a bob and just went in to just get some of my hair to match the length of my long layers so it could be all one length. THATS IT. However, the apprentice and her mentor seemed to not listen to anything I said! The apprentice was left to her own devices after some very short explanation from her mentor on how to thin my hair - which has left the texture of my thick wavy lackluster, rough, and damaged looking - he was gone. She began thinning out my hair to then doing the opposite of what I said and cutting my layers shorter to the point where when I got home and straightened it, it looked like 2 different haircuts! The layers were super short and not blended at all to the rest of my hair! It was a disaster. This haircut took more than 2 hours and when then mentor looked at it all he said was do you like it - it was hard to tell the damage she did on my hair because she left it curly, so all I could say was yes. However as a professional hair stylist, I assumed he saw every mistake she made, but with that being said he said nothing! I called back several days later and nicely told the receptionist that I got a really bad haircut and she recommended that I come in again and have someone fix it free of charge. When I got in the stylist was shocked at how my hair was butchered, but honestly couldn't fix it - she spent another 2 hours trying to fix it, but in the end it turned into a shaggy over-layered mullet and exactly everything I didn't want it to look like. I don't blame the second stylist, but she made it worse. Now I'm in the process of trying to grow out my hair again. I know I won't be going back there when I need something done. They are probably usually great, but my experiences were so bad that I don't think I could ever go back. Good luck to those who give it a shot! read more

I booked my appointment a week ago, I got three phone calls the day before. The stylist asked to move the time appointment twice. She then called again and said I will be with a different stylist and had to change my time again. I was flexible and said that's fine. I got to the salon and showed the stylist a picture of what I wanted and the amount I wanted off, which was four inches. She took off around 8 inches and did not layer my hair and could not understand that I wanted it angled around my face. I am beyond disappointed with my hair cut! I hate it!! I am now paying for another stylist to fix my hair. I do not recommend this hair salon! read more

Rachel is a hair Yoda. I have shoulder length wavy curly hair that is difficult to cut well and I refuse to spend 45 min drying and straightening it everyday. Rachel never pushed me to do so and she gets the curls to live a natural life and do their thing. Love her! read more

I looked up curly hair salons in Baltimore and this salon received the highest rating. I went for a simple trim of my ends. Dawn cut my hair and added some layers. Unfortunately I don't think she did a good job. My hair is stringy and strands have odd lengths. In addition during the wash she used a product she has never used before...and then was like "oh i dont like it" and tried to wash it off. Since then i have noticed certain strands of my hair have different texture and color than they were before. I will not recommend this place especially for curly multi ethnic hair. read more
