Eugene was patient and thoughtful as we discussed various options to maintain and protect the waterproof membrane and strengthen the structural integrity of our expansive decks on a hillside. He was mindful of our budget and, as a general contractor, identified and repaired another area in our crawlspace. He came up with creative solutions, and he has a great sense of design and style. We ended up replacing our upper deck with Trex composite boards. On the lower deck, his crew replaced most of the redwood boards and repainted the deck, even the wooden joists of the upper deck, for both wood preservation and aesthetic purposes. I interviewed a half dozen or so contractors prior to selecting Nico Pro Construction (NPC) to do my Dream Garage project. The usual criteria: conveyed competence, experience, estimate completeness, competitive pricing, timeline, and gut-feel, were all considered and evaluated. From the beginning, it was clear to me that NPC was a cut above the others. I especially appreciated that Nazariy, NPC's estimator, was also going to be the Project Manager. That in itself was huge to me, ensuring I wouldn't ever get the "he said, she said" game that is so often prevalent in construction projects. Throughout the project, Nazariy provided me with updated timelines keeping me "in the loop"; that was a big plus for me. And while we had our share of mostly weather related delays, I always knew where we were with the scope of work. As was the case with Nazariy, NPC's crew of workers performed their efforts with a solid sense of pride and regard for their work and my project. Sadly, that mindset is not as common place in construction as I remember it to be; NPC clearly exhibits the proprietary interest you want in your contractor. The steps in front of the house needed to be replaced. A number of contractors asked me to take…read morepictures of the steps with my smartphone and text it to them. It would be very difficult to give an accurate estimate that way because there's a lot of dry rot underneath the steps which needed to be inspected in-person. R&B Framing was the only company which showed up to take a look at the steps. Two days later, Jose Cedillo emailed me an estimate and thoroughly answered my questions. His company uses Redwood or cedar wood for Victorian homes, though cedar does cost extra. We were surprised by how fast his crew finished the job. They showed up on April 9th, early in the morning and worked until the evening. They arrived the next day to finish the rest of the steps and the banisters. He also painted the banisters according to the original white creme color. If it's a legacy house, they'll stick to the originality of the Victorian architecture. (Per building code regulations, when a house is considered a legacy house the paint must be the original--or close to the original color--of when the house was first built.)
