Craving Thai was a simple but fairly solid stop along the way for us while headed home from a day spent stretched out on the beach. Sunburnt, exhausted and hungry, I was looking for something quick and easy that didn't require us to look at all "presentable." Food trucks are usually a sure bet, and Craving Thai was one of the last ones open that day so we headed over. Thai is one of those perfect cuisines if you are vegetarian or even vegan, as most dishes can be customized to fit your needs. I eat vegetarian/pescatarian so I chose the pad thai with tofu, while my husband ordered the green curry with tofu. To start off, we decided to split an order of the crispy veggie spring rolls. Everything was cooked to order and came out quickly. The spring rolls were hot and crispy, served with a mango chili sauce. My husband's green curry had an impressive array of vegetables in it, plus a surprising amount of spice considering they didn't ask how spicy he wanted it (but he loves spice, so it went over very well!). My pad thai was pretty good, but both my husband and I immediately picked out a distinct ketchup/tomato sauce taste in the sauce, nothing quite like we've ever had before. It wasn't bad per say, but it was a little peculiar. The egg also wasn't cooked all the way - there were funny bits of white, which I just pushed around my plate and avoided. Overall, despite the limited options for dining in the area, I'm glad we gave Craving Thai a try but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. Worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

Great food truck when you crave a spicy, hot lunch that is easy on the stomach. We got a green curry with chicken and it comes with salad and rice. Salad portion was perfect, I would have liked a bit more rice to soak up the delicious curry. We took it back to the hotel. The curry came in a well sealed container. We had lunch here today, in between rain bursts. Luckily the bench overhangs protected the bench (and us) for the most part. Shared a Fresh Basil Stir fried with chicken, and a Green Curry with Rice with tofu. We ordered the Basil dish 'Spicy', and it actually was, which was different from many of the 'hot' or 'spicy' dishes we've had elsewhere (Thai or Mexican). Both dishes were delicious. Neither were outstanding in taste or ingredients, but they were large portions (particularly for Thai), and quite tasty. I wish the chicken had been chunks of white meat instead of ground, and I wish there had been more veggies in both. But given the reasonable prices and good portion sizes, along with the decent flavors, it was a good meal. We also ordered a Green Papaya Salad, also 'Spicy'. Not realizing how large the other portions were, we didn't eat this until dinner. It was still fresh, crispy, crunchy, and very delicious - great sauce. CT was near the dive shop we visited. We were hungry and looking for a quick bit and were not disappointed. We ordered mango sticky rice, tofu pad Thai, larb, and spring rolls. The spring rolls were very crunchy and satisfying. I was craving noodles and the Tofu pad thai was exactly what I wanted. The larb was good but was a little dry. I felt it could have used more dressing. I'm not too familiar with larb so I don't know how it compares to others. I was really excited they had the mango sticky rice. I've tried to order it a few times in New York and each time told they didn't have it. It's a satisfying combination of sweet and salty with a drizzle of coconut milk and the perfect way to end a meal. read more

I was craving Thai food in the area and there were very few options. After consulting with Yelp and its trusted reviews, I opted for Craving Thai. Just set the address "3477 Weliweli Road in Koloa, HI 96756" in your Navigation app to find the Craving Thai food truck. It's about a 9-10 minute drive from the Poipu resorts. Parking is available and accessible in front, and there were some seating areas top dine in if you prefer. Their hours are 10:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. I arrived at 6:25 pm on a Friday evening and they were supposed to close at 7:00 pm. However, their window was shut and they were inside preparing food, but declined my order, and any further orders for the night, because they were "doing a big order and couldn't take any more"! So one star less for the inconvenience of having to return again, the next day. This time I arrived at 11:30 am. That appeared to be enough advanced time to ensure I wouldn't be closed on again! Be prepared to wait if they're busy, as all food is made to order. I waited for over 15 minutes for my order. You can call ahead to take out, also. The dishes come with your choice of chicken, tofu or shrimp (shrimp is $2 more than chicken or tofu). I ordered the Tom Kha soup with chicken, Massaman curry with chicken, Pad Thai with shrimp, and Pad See Ew with tofu. Note, there is no beef, which is a bit limiting. To me, Pad See Ew is best served with beef, which goes well with the broccoli. I would say categorically, Craving Thai make curries and soups far better than they make noodles. The Tom Kha soup with chicken ($10.95) was excellent and just as good as, if not better than I've had in restaurants. Chock-full of ingredients like chicken, chunky carrots, onions, mushrooms, kiffir lime leaves, lemongrass, ginger with chili oil and green onion, the chef does not skimp. It almost presented like a thinner curry, as it was far from "soupy", and was perfectly enjoyed with the included rice to thicken it even more. Also included was a small salad with a delicious sweet chili dressing. The Massaman Curry with chicken ($9.95) was very flavorful. The tamarind was instantly discernible with the coconut and balanced with lime juice, bathing a hearty assortment of potatoes, carrots, onion, and peanuts. It's a very rich dish and best enjoyed with rice. This generously-portioned dish also came with the small salad and delicious sweet chili dressing. I was not, however, impressed with the noodles. The Pad Thai with shrimp ($11.95), tomato sauce based, was not well mixed. I had a lump of unseparated noodles with the ingredients like egg, bean sprouts, green onion and peanuts, tossed on the side or on top. The flavor was below average. Same for the Pad See Ew with tofu ($9.95), the noodles were not mixed well with the ingredients and the noodles were unseparated. Also, I'm accustomed to the wider egg noodle, not the thinner noodle they used (the same as they did in the Pad Thai). The Pad See Ew was a bit sweeter than Pad Thai but done with a shoyu-based sauce, with broccoli, carrots and egg. Craving Thai's rendition of this dish was quite underwhelming and not as I expected; the quality was inconsistent with that of the soup and curry. Needless to say, I would not order either noodle dish again. I would like to return though, and when I do, I will try their Green Curry, Panang Curry, Yellow Curry, or Red Curry, and most definitely the Tom Kha soup again. read more

3.5 stars from me, 3 stars from my husband. Overall it's fine, but there's better thai food on the island. I got the red curry with tofu- sauce was pretty good, but veggies tasted a little old. They used baby carrots which was kinda weird. Still ate all of it though! Husband got the pad-see-ew. This dish wasn't that great, we both agreed. Something tasted.... off. There was no hint of rich sweetness normally in the dish, and one flavor I am not used to was pretty overpowering. The dish overall tasted old, too. Who can turn down a food truck - I surely can't and especially if it's cute, yummy food smells coming out of it, and a ton of people are there for it. Had great Thai food to go - spring rolls and the chicken larb salad (spicy which is what I wanted). So delicious and can't wait to go back. Service is a little slow, but worth it given that everything is cooked fresh and made to order. There are a lot of bold chickens around (to be expected since you are in Kauai), but these ones will jump on the picnic table and literally take food off your plate. I hadn't seen that at other places. These 2 women were eating while I was waiting for my order and the chicken almost stole the entire plate. So sassy!! read more

Meh. It's not often I give less than 4 or 5 stars. A place needs to really suck for them to earn this rating from me. After ATV riding we were surprised to see the Thai place I bookmarked was right next door. But if your craving Thai don't come here ... The pad Thai noodles were weird and sticky. Were there any bean sprouts in it? I'm pretty sure that's one of the main ingredients. I counted maybe one. Anyways.. we had it with shrimp and they were good. Other than that, the dish was bland. I swear those were top ramen noodles We ordered the shrimp fried rice and were hopeful. It came out as a pretty small portion like the pad Thai . There was broccoli in it. Maybe that's an island thing. Broccoli and other fillers such as large pieces of bell pepper and tomatoes. Disappointing. Lastly we got the red chicken curry. This was the dish that had a minute amount of spice to it. We wanted this food to burn our mouths and it didn't. When I ask for my Thai dishes hot they usually come hot. They aren't given to me with multiple sides of hot chili sauce that's really not hot at all. Don't get me wrong, we finished all the food. But talked shit the whole time to each other about how much it sucked. Back home at our favorite place , for $37 we would get heaping portions of pad Thai, fried rice and red curry and when we ask for it hot , the dishes come very spicy, and with lots of flavor. I moved from the Napa area here to Koloa in February and I was missing my favorite Thai restaurant I went to weekly. Enter Craving Thai. This food truck has been my almost weekly to bi-weekly addiction and so happy they are nearby. I was thrilled they were open during the COVID-19 restaurant closures and love everything I have tried there. I am a vegetarian so the fact they don't use fish sauce in everything is great! Today they made something for me not on the menu at my request which was Tofu Larb salad. The menu only shows the chicken version, but she made it on the spot. Next time I will order ahead for her to use the same fried tofu they use in their other dishes. Perfectly seasoned and amount of heat (I asked for medium other dishes that are cooked I prefer spicy). I am trying to cut carbs so this was fantastic! I will order again! read more

When they are not busy, they always give us tips on what's currently happening on the island. I have to laugh at some of the one star reviews. Food is excellent. The problem was that we waited for 40 minutes for our order and when we got back to the hotel we found out they forgot to include our son's order. I didn't notice at first because they split one order into multiple containers. We called but they were closed. So we left a message. Then, my wife went to Lihue to get our son something to eat since the local places were no longer taking orders. All in all, it took almost three hours to get dinner. I tried out a mild curry with shrimp dish the other day for lunch. The flavor was spot on. The shrimp was fairly good. The veggies were very under-cooked. Not worth for the price. There are three food trucks in that area excluding a coffee place. Somehow, those three food trucks have good reviews albeit poor food quality. What's crazy is it really was some of the best yellow curry I've had. I've been to Thailand and eat in Los Angeles like crazy, it was legitimately good Thai food. By far the best Pad Thai and summer rolls I've tasted (on Kauai). The price are very reasonable. This food truck is located by Koloa Neighborhood center, in the parking lot of Kauai ATV Tours, next to Koloa Variety Store, behind Koloa Mill ice cream, in Koloa Town, and in between two other food trucks :). Need more info???? Most Thai food trucks here on Kauai are very expensive and not that great. And most of them give so little for the price you pay for. I now know why they call themselves "Craving Thai". First of all their prices are very reasonable, Second it's made to order, and third the portions are big. When you're craving for it, it's worth every noodle every veggie, every good enough to lick the plate. (Not that I'd do it) but............... I LIKE IT! $13 crispy chicken from here and is my favorite meal I've had during my two week stay in Kauai. I've eaten at Beach House, Keoki's, Musubi food truck, Hoku's food truck, Big Monster, and other places and this little ol' food truck has been my favorite. I'm not saying the others are necessarily bad, but this place is just a dime. Awesome food truck with great food. When we first came to craving Thai, we ordered a pad Thai and green curry (medium spice). Both dishes were delicious. The pad Thai tasted authentic with the sweetness and the green curry had just the right amount of spice. We liked it so much that we came back the next day after some snorkeling in Lawai Beach (amazing!). We ordered the green curry again and panang curry (both medium spice). For vegetarians, they have plenty of options and don't put fish sauce in their curries. I would highly recommend Craving Thai if you are craving Thai and want some good food at a decent affordable price!! read more

Previously this would have been 4 stars but on my last visit they used ketchup to make their Pad Thai pink in color and it was rather disgusting. Other dishes that night were Pad See Ew (very dry), Crispy Chicken (overcooked), Satay with Peanut Sauce (not bad but nothing spectacular). read more
