Came here on a rainy day for lunch and overall had a great meal. I got the ahi focaccia sandwich, which was a really unique dish. The pesto aioli was sooo good and the veggies that it came with were so fresh. The staff were super friendly and we ate at the bar tables looking over the kitchen, where all the ingredients looked very fresh. Overall a great spot for a quick lunch! read more

Best dinner of the week! Great menu, and incredible food. Watched Brody (?) put fresh vegetables into various dishes from the window, and all the portions were huge. My cilantro pesto wrap with ahi was amazing and I was sad not to be able to finish it ( breakfast tomorrow!) Hubby got the chicken satay plate which was another huge meal served on a bed of rice and equally amazing. The smells emanating from the kitchen should be enough to stop anyone in their tracks and run to eat here. Sorry I didn't get the name of the friendly female taking orders but she was super friendly. Since surrounding restaurants were unexpectedly closed, Mermaids was the third restaurant we tried and were finally able to find a spot to grab lunch. You order at a window and can check out their menu at the counter. I was so hungry and decided to order the focaccia sandwich where you can choose your protein, and of course I chose ahi. They had a variety of housemade teas and lemonades, but I ordered the hibiscus tea with lemonade. It was super refreshing! It took about 15 minutes for our food to come out, but it did not disappoint! The sandwich was huge and served with toppings on the side for you to add what you want. The pesto aioli on the sandwich was delicious! All in all, for a rough start to us finding a lunch spot, this gem of a restaurant saved the day! read more

So delicious! One of our favorite stops while on Kauai. We had the guava flow, hibiscus lemonade, ahi tuna wrap and focaccia sandwich with chicken. The food was disappointing. We ordered two island tacos--one with ahi and one with chicken. Unfortunately, the tacos were so soggy that you couldn't even pick them up; we had to eat them with chopsticks. When they arrived, both the chicken and the ahi looked exactly the same because they were covered in the same sauce--and honestly, they tasted almost the same too. If you're looking for a healthy, clean meal that's just as filling as it is flavorful and delicious- look no further, Mermaids is the spot! My fiancee and I ended up at Mermaids by accident (as we were originally heading to Java Kai Cafe which is next door) but we passed by and after looking at the menu, we decided to stop at Mermaids. We were both SO glad we did, because our meals were fantastic! I ordered the satay salad with chicken and my fiancee tried the cilantro pesto wrap with tofu. To drink, we also tried the guava flow with coconut milk and the thai iced tea. We enjoyed our meals so much that we decided to revisit Mermaids again a few days later! A note for other out-of-state visitors- we also appreciated that Mermaids is open on Sundays, as many businesses in Kauai are closed on Sunday! This place was recommended by a friend and we stopped here on our way to Princeville. It is most definitely worth the hype. The tuna wrap was delicious...the wasabi aioli brought everything together - this was a large wrap and left me very full. The poke bowl was fresh and delicious. Not sure why there's not a line around the block! We happened to be around the back looking for an entrance to this carry out restaurant when we spotted the delivery of a 140 lb tuna! We ordered the ahi tacos and an ahi focaccia sandwich and OMG! The servings are huge (we should have shared!) and deliciously seared and spiced. We had the Focaccia Sandwich with chicken and Holy Moly best sandwich I have had on the island. Unfortunately, this was our stop on the way to the airport else I would have been back several time to try more of their food. My sister and I ended up passing through the shopping district in Wailua a lot during our recent trip, and so Mermaids was going to be an eventuality. It was on our list to visit before our trip, and I'm glad we were able to make it happen. Looking at their menu beforehand, I thought we would be able to choose from a variety of veggie-friendly options, but we were limited to some "customized" wraps. The owner (I assume) seemed like a chill and friendly guy, and made a spinach wrap for me (with his secret Aloha sauce recipe, lol!) and a black bean burrito for my sister. The wraps were definitely filling and the cost for our wraps was relatively cheap compared to what we were paying for meals at other places around the island. My only "complaint" was that I wish we had more shade coverage in the limited outdoor seating, as that made it difficult to eat at the spot (eating while sweating is not fun, haha). read more

It was our third day in Kauai, so made this our lunch choice, and we were hungry after a long tour. There was plenty of parking in the dedicated lot, and it wasn't too busy when we stopped in after 1:30 on a Wednesday. We were greeted promptly and got to choose where we sat, in a picnic table with plenty of space. Chose two house draft beers: Honopu Hefeweizen ($9) which was not good...very weak and watery. But the Hanakoa Cream ale was worse ($9)...chose it because of a local cream ale from Wisconsin that I love. But it tasted more like a glass of lite pilsner, more like a Miller Lite than a cream ale. I had to finish both...should have just ordered one. The food came out a bit later. We wanted to share the local Style Smoke meat plate (sounded promising), which was a plate of pork shoulder ($16). Plenty of it, but it felt like leftover meat, reheated in a sugary sauce...looked and tasted like Tocino (which isn't my favorite), not like pulled pork/kalua pork. It came with a scoop of white rice. I got the spicy Poke ($19) which used good quality raw ahi tuna. It had lots of tasty, spicy mayo and was enjoyable. But the rice was not cooked well (it was mushy), and I had to ask myself: why has the rice been so mediocre for our first two days? (It got better as the trip went on). My wife got the Huli Huli Veg & Rice plate ($25)...not good. Just two pieces of chicken breast meat (coming from frozen) with a very light sauce (flavorless) and the carrots were big chunks, candied, which is not what we expected. Brought most of this back to our hotel (since we had a fridge), but neither one of us touched it for the rest of the trip. Pricing is inconsistent (the chicken plate should have been the cheapest item considering the ingredients and prep work). Payment was done through Toast, and there was a 3% service charge for using credit card.

We have been on the island for 6 nights. Each evening we have tried Mai Tai's. Lava Lava's are by far the best!!! They are not too sweet and a good pour! We got there early as the other reviews said it gets crowded and they do not take reservations. We arrived at 5 pm on a Wednesday and were seated right away closest to the beach. For our starter we had edamame which was a large portion and so good. My husband ordered the Chicken Pineapple Rice Bowl and substituted the chicken for the coconut shrimp. The rice was AMAZING as well as the shrimp, but our only complaint was the portion was very small and was served with only 3 shrimp. The picture looks like you get a lot, but it came in a carved out SMALL pineapple. The presentation was beautiful though. I had the Ceasar salad and added chicken. It was so good!!! The lettuce was so crisp! Nothing worse than a Ceasar salad with wilty romaine lettuce. I've had plenty of those in my day. This was one of the best I've ever had! Everything arrived in a timely manner. We had a great night. Side note...they offer free valet parking which is at the very top of the parking lot. I have nothing but high praises for Lava Lava's beach club!! You must check it out for yourself. You will be so happy you did!
