Went to mermaids today and got a chicken focaccia sandwich. The guy who greeted us and took our order was super friendly. He let us know our order would be about 15 minutes and he was correct with his estimation. There was ample outdoor seating to wait at (or eat at if you choose). The sandwich itself was very tasty. The focaccia was nice and soft, however the seasonings on the top kept sticking to my fingers while I tried to eat. I loved it and would recommend this for a nice, fresh lunch. Best dinner of the week! Great menu, and incredible food. Watched Brody (?) put fresh vegetables into various dishes from the window, and all the portions were huge. My cilantro pesto wrap with ahi was amazing and I was sad not to be able to finish it ( breakfast tomorrow!) Hubby got the chicken satay plate which was another huge meal served on a bed of rice and equally amazing. The smells emanating from the kitchen should be enough to stop anyone in their tracks and run to eat here. Sorry I didn't get the name of the friendly female taking orders but she was super friendly. Since surrounding restaurants were unexpectedly closed, Mermaids was the third restaurant we tried and were finally able to find a spot to grab lunch. You order at a window and can check out their menu at the counter. I was so hungry and decided to order the focaccia sandwich where you can choose your protein, and of course I chose ahi. They had a variety of housemade teas and lemonades, but I ordered the hibiscus tea with lemonade. It was super refreshing! It took about 15 minutes for our food to come out, but it did not disappoint! The sandwich was huge and served with toppings on the side for you to add what you want. So delicious! One of our favorite stops while on Kauai. We had the guava flow, hibiscus lemonade, ahi tuna wrap and focaccia sandwich with chicken. The food was disappointing. We ordered two island tacos--one with ahi and one with chicken. Unfortunately, the tacos were so soggy that you couldn't even pick them up; we had to eat them with chopsticks. When they arrived, both the chicken and the ahi looked exactly the same because they were covered in the same sauce--and honestly, they tasted almost the same too. My fiancee and I ended up at Mermaids by accident (as we were originally heading to Java Kai Cafe which is next door) but we passed by and after looking at the menu, we decided to stop at Mermaids. We were both SO glad we did, because our meals were fantastic! I ordered the satay salad with chicken and my fiancee tried the cilantro pesto wrap with tofu. To drink, we also tried the guava flow with coconut milk and the thai iced tea. We enjoyed our meals so much that we decided to revisit Mermaids again a few days later! A note for other out-of-state visitors- we also appreciated that Mermaids is open on Sundays, as many businesses in Kauai are closed on Sunday! My sister and I ended up passing through the shopping district in Wailua a lot during our recent trip, and so Mermaids was going to be an eventuality. It was on our list to visit before our trip, and I'm glad we were able to make it happen. Looking at their menu beforehand, I thought we would be able to choose from a variety of veggie-friendly options, but we were limited to some "customized" wraps. The owner (I assume) seemed like a chill and friendly guy, and made a spinach wrap for me (with his secret Aloha sauce recipe, lol!) and a black bean burrito for my sister. The wraps were definitely filling and the cost for our wraps was relatively cheap compared to what we were paying for meals at other places around the island. My only "complaint" was that I wish we had more shade coverage in the limited outdoor seating, as that made it difficult to eat at the spot (eating while sweating is not fun, haha). read more

Found this place early when I was scraping yelp for places to grub at while here on vacation. I ate here three times over the time I was here and I got the same thing every time. I know boring but that's how great the food is. Bean and cheese burritos are dope and make for great road food while you are out exploring.
