This place was awesome, I saw so many vintage candies from my childhood. It took me back to the 80s for sure. Be prepared that if you plan a quick stop here to pick up gelato with kids, you might spend days hearing about how they really wanted a stuffie or handfuls of candy from barrels--even if you only stepped a foot into the store, where the gelato counter is conveniently located. Cravin's is a kid's dream. Mountains of candy and toys. More than the eyes can take in all at once. A destination unto itself. And conveniently located on the town square, which has a really awesome playground. I would not, however, return for the gelato. Gelato tends to be softer-serve than standard American hard-serve ice cream. But this gelato was all really melty. It was also soooo sweet. I would love to try it with the sugar toned down a bit. My 6 year old loved it and said, "this tastes like the unicorn cake!" She was referring to this slice of unicorn cake I got during a Safeway promotion (declaring national unicorn day was a brilliant commercial move. Well played, Safeway.) But this is a mixed compliment. My kids loved the unicorn cake; it was so sweet to me that I thought I'd gag and I felt guilty serving it to them. They always have interesting flavors that are not too out there and not overly sweet. They are happy to mix two flavors for you which I highly recommend you take advantage of. Your sweet tooth will be fully sated at this place. Formerly known as Powell's, the location, staff and overall experience seem to be the same as before the name change. This candy shop is a time capsule of the iconic sweets from the past century! It had all my childhood favorites (90's kid) and my friend's childhood favorites (70's kid). It felt like I stepped into a candy museum, and you could touch all the displays and buy whatever you wanted. It was nostalgic seeing so many familiar packaging. They serve fresh gelato, so we grabbed a cupful while we explored around the shop. What's amazing is that they have a small corner dedicated to all things Willy Wonka! That corner had the Willy Wonka movie playing with their entire Wonka candy collection and even had old theater seats for you to sit and enjoy the movie! Right now I'm craving for some of the classic candy sold at Cravins Candy Emporium in the heart of Windsor's contemporary Town Green, which is a fairly newly created epicenter that makes up the center of the city of Windsor, with shops, stores, restaurants and apartments surrounding a large grassy lawn, where they host events like farmers markets. The Town Green is the place to be in Windsor and a small independently owned candy shop opening up here only solidifies the fact that the new "downtown" Windsor city center is the place to be. We came to Cravins Candy Emporium after a day of hiking in nearby Shiloh Ranch Regional Park and we were looking for a nearby place to have a hearty lunch and when we arrive Cravins Candy Emporium was practically calling our name as a quick place to stop and satiate that beckoning sweet tooth of ours. The whole concept of Cravins Candy Emporium is brilliant, like any other sweet shop they have all of the traditional freshly made candies and other sweets like dipped chocolates and taffy in addition to the old standbys like licorice and Jelly Belly's and M&M's. But they also sell that hard to find stuff like chocolates and candy bars that you can find only when shopping in a foreign country. I was tempted to by everything I saw and it takes a while to see everything which makes us all sort of kids in candy stores at that moment. For those needing a brief respite, they even have a small theatre seating section where they play the classic 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" on loop. This time, although I wanted to buy everything, I managed to resist and only bought Cherry Ice Chips in a tin. Thinking these were classic candies from long era since passed, it turns out they were fairly recently featured on the television series Shark Tank! So it just goes to show not only do they sell the classics but they are also on the pulse of what's hot in the candy world at Cravins Candy Emporium, and they'll make sure to purchase it wholesale for their customers! No mention of Cravins Candy Emporium can go without the fact that they are a gelato shop as well, which in a perfect world makes them just about the perfect company. The prices aren't super cheap, but their not too bad for those looking to cleanse their pallet with a kid's size for $3.50. I got a caramel flavored scoop in a cup and was more than satisfied with that. Prices don't come cheap for the candy either, which actually makes buying a lot of supplies to satisfy one's sweet tooth that much easier, or harder, depending on how much one intends to purchase upon entering Cravins Candy Emporium. It's just the perfect experience for those looking for the perfect small town in the heart of wine country, and one not to be passed up upon. read more

Elite fail. I was so into looking at the different sweets I didn't take any photos! The name has changed but the treats have not. Which is good. The girls that were working were very nice and offered help but didn't hover which I love. Let me know you're there if I need you. They even understand if a candy stick rolls off the counter and breaks they have you get a new one. Was cute they even had a spot with 3 seats facing a small-ish tv playing the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. We did try a new treat. The ice cubes. Not badly priced at .75¢ each we got three. Had the consistency of being left in a warm car but wasn't warm. Definitely could taste the hazelnut in it not so much on the coconut listed on the wrapper. Will return again when I am in the area. read more

Pros- fun store with a variety of candy, retail items you can't find in regular stores. I actually went back because of the selection and fun store staff that provided my kids a great experience in the past. Cons- that fun store experience was gone. Replaced by a man that didn't appear to enjoy his job. Bad day? I don't know but killed my enthusiasm for buying anything. We purchased a piece of candy in the case and left. So disappointing. I went there eager to spend money at this mom and pop shop and bring home some souvenirs for the grandkids. After this cranky, unenthusiastic man engaged with us, I was not spending my money there and moved on to the toy store close by. Who was eager to please and take my money. Too bad because I would have happily dropped some good cash here. Tips- not sure if the gentleman working was the owner (kind of appeared to be), but maybe you'll get someone else with more enthusiasm to help. It's definitely worth a peek and check out the availability of candy and retail items. Although, if you have the same experience I did, I encourage you to spend your money elsewhere. This is a super fun candy store in the boutique shopping area of downtown Windsor. Very attractive and brightly colored shop. Staff has always been friendly and helpful to me. I was greeted immediately upon entering and offered help. I browsed for a while and then bought a few candies. The prices are kind of high but that's not unusual for a store tailored to candy. I like that they have unusual candies, some non-food gifts and there's a little spot in the back of the small store with a kid's movie playing and a couple children's chairs. Though what kid in a candy shop wants to watch a movie instead of trying to get all the candy? :) It was the old Willy Wonka movie when I was in the other day. read more

Incredibly disappointed with the lack of accessibility for a local Windsor resident with a power chair. How inconsiderate to place a handicap parking spot with van access right in the front of the store and then not have the ability to provide proper access to the store itself. I wanted to give a shout out to this place because, as well as having every candy you can possibly want or crave from your childhood (whatever your age), the woman working to manage/run the store on the weekdays is a delight. Apparently the franchise dissipated, but the woman who helped us the other day has been there throughout the last many years through all forms of ownership etc. She is so friendly and helpful and just sweet (pun intended) and made buying a few pieces of candy for a road-trip into the Wine Country a lot more fun. read more
