I normally order Thanksgiving pies in advance from Downtown Bakery - and they are always organized and on it - but I this year because we were planning to eat out, and I didn't want a bunch of extra desserts lingering. But what is Thanksgiving without desserts? I stopped into Downtown Bakery on Wednesday morning, the day before Thanksgiving and to my delight, they had a few freshly baked beautiful pumpkin pies in their case. Score! My crew loved it. Stopped by on a Wednesday around 11. A couple folks at the window ledge seating but otherwise empty. Wasn't greeted but was able to look over the options which were all well marked. Over-priviledged customer came in with her dog, strode up to the register and ordered a sandwich, not bothering to ask if I was in line - comes with the neighborhood. Service was professional but not exactly friendly. I got a donut muffin, a cheddar & thyme scone and a piece of pecan pie. The donut muffin had a nice sugary cinnamon coating on the outside and was plain cake inside. It would really be helped if it had some type of fruit as filling in the middle, since it ends up being one note and a little dry. Some apple or berry in the middle would make it good. The cheddar scone was a good size and had a decent cheddar taste, but the thyme was more of a whisper than a companion flavor. Good crust and it reheated well but no yummy buttery flavor to speak of. The pecan pie was terrible. I have made many a pecan pie and it is almost impossible to mess it up, so not sure how they managed to make a bad one. it was so bland, it barely tasted like pecan never mind anything else. it wasn't hardly sweet at all, which I wouldn't mind if it was flavorful in other ways, but it wasn't. Even the crust was bland, so it was a big disappointment. My impression is that the location on the square makes it easy to get the tourist customers, so they don't have to do well at being great to please regular customers. My experience of the food was uneven and unimpressive, so not a place I will go back to with so many other good bakeries around. read more

Honestly it could have been better, muffin was cold and dry, scone was also very dry but more importantly the service was awful. The two people working were rude and condescending. When we are in town this is my daughters go to spot. This was my first time here. They opened at 7 am after Christmas Day. We set our alarms for 6:45 and made sure we were there early. Sticky buns and doughnut muffins are always a go to. My son and I opted for the frittatas and we picked up a raspberry galette to take to company, later on the day. The frittatas were cooked well and flavorful. I tried a piece of a sticky bun and it was still warm. The burnt sugar created a nice sticky crust and the inside of the bun was soft and gooey. They doughnut muffins were solid, like always. The galette was a huge hit at the party. Everyone raved about it. The tart raspberries were a perfect foil to the sweet flaky crust. I see why this is my daughters go to and when I'm town I'll definitely visit them again. read more

I've been in a few very well run bakeries in Sonoma county They all stand out because of what they serve, but the ones that really stand out are the ones where the young people that work there are obviously well trained in customer service. Nope. I ordered a chocolate croissant and a decaf coffee. They failed horribly on both accounts. The chocolate croissant was chewy. It didn't have any crispy outside shell whatsoever. No layering to speak of. That is not how you make a croissant. I threw it out. The decaf coffee I ordered was just... poor. I took one sip and dumped it out outside view of the bakery. BY FAR, with no one coming even close...this is THE best bakery I've experienced. We got a loaf of bread, a cherry pie and a small variety of pastries. Everything was ridiculously fantastic. I'm pretty sure this is one of the oldest establishments in the Healdsburg square area. I've been stopping here for a few years just for their decadent, ganache brownies. They used to make a delicious potato pizza but haven't seen that for awhile. This place is minus fancy, I guess it's all about the baked goods. I had the pleasure of trying out their fig rolls over at big Ferry building farmer's market, and I was very pleasantly surprised! Market fig rolls are pumped with sugar and god knows what else, so I tread carefully, but theirs was made of whole wheat and pure fig. Healdsburg is my hometown. One of my mom's jobs as a teen was at Downtown Bakery in the late 80s/early 90s. The sticky bun here is a staple of my childhood. Every time I visit family in the area, I come here to get a morning bun (or a few to freeze). I rarely get home with very many left to share. Healdsburg has changed a lot since I lived there, but this bakery is a piece of home. Warm and inviting, consistent in quality and flavor, a place I compare all bakeries to. What a great breakfast spot in this quaint town of Healdsburg! The staff here are very friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and has a sense of community. The food - simply delicious. I had their poached egg with vegetables on polenta, it is quite scrumptious! The poached eggs was perfectly done and the vegetable and Polenta was a such perfect compliment to this dish, I really enjoyed it! I am really disappointed with how glitzy, fake and pretentious Healdsburg has become...it feels like a Disneyland for wine-wannabe-connoisseurs. The Downtown Bakery, however, is totally the opposite: this is a place where the few locals that have left mingle with the more adventurous tourists. At 6am in the morning, this is the only place that is open in town and so you will find a nice selection of day laborers, senior citizens and jetlaged tourists...many of them gathering at the communal tables and gossiping over a cup of coffee and a particularly sticky bun. This place reminds me of other bakeries in the Bay Area such as the Cheeseboard in Berkely, the Arizmendy Bakeries in San Francisco and Oakland or the Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes. The focus here is on the product, not on how it's displayed! read more

No folks, I didn't drive 2+ hours from where I live just to get to this bakery to try their famous sticky bun and donut muffin... I was there for business and decided to make a quick culinary stop to the place that was featured in Food Network's best thing I've ever ate. Got there around 9:30AM and there was a line at the cashier. The line moved fairly quick though. Most of the tables were dirty and occupied. The store is small with very limited seating inside and I think there was probably a small table for two outside. I ordered a sticky bun, a donut muffin, a fig newtown and a medium size coffee. I braved myself to share a (dirty) table with another customer... It was a small place so I think everyone didn't seem to mind sharing spaces with others. Ok, now the food...sticky bun was very very very good! Was it the best thing that I ever ate? hmmm maybe not hahahahaha....but it was very good. I hate cinnamon but I actually enjoyed my sticky bun. It was not overly spiced with cinnamon and to the contrary to most sticky buns...it wasn't overly sweetened. The dough was fluffy and soft and the caramelized sugar around the bun made it delightful to have a little crunch on every bite. yummm! The donut muffin was meeeeeehhhhh....It was dense, dry and a bit messy with the powder sugar...will not get this again. The fig newton.. well..I've never been a big fan of it.. but it was probably my first homemade fig newton. Again, I appreciate that it wasn't too sweet, and there was lots/generous portion of figs inside...not bad! Coffee was standard.. better than starbucks though hehehe! So now... will I drive all the way to Healdsburg for sticky buns? NO!! Will I stop by again when I'm in the area for sticky buns? most likely yes! But you know folks... not sure if it's the same owner..but their sticky buns here remind me of the ones I had from a little bakery in Pt. Reyes area near Tomales Bay. Over there.. they call them.. the morning buns. From Chez Panisse alums, over twenty years ago. My bf brought me here back in the nineties, because she's a big Alice Waters/Chez Panisse fan. We used to call her our own Martha Stewart. Anyhow, of course I went ga-ga for the mass array of stellar baked goods. I always drool for baked goods. I remember one particular visit; it was summer & I saw they had peach jam. Peaches are my favorite fruit, so I thought it was some sort of kismet message from the universe that I was supposed to buy this jam. So, of course, I did. And of course, it was fabulous. Forward several, well interspersed visits throughout a couple of decades, to last Sunday. I hadn't been in in at least 2 years. It was just before closing, & there was one almond tart left. Even at the end of the day, it looked totally tempting. Even though we were booked for dinner @ Coppola's in a couple of hours, & it's a heavier, richer treat, I had to snag it. Then, there were the fig newtons. Fig newtons so moist, & so big, they looked like they were on steroids. A must. The almond tart was honestly a tad dry at the ends. But that was not enough to take away from its all around glory. Decadent & powerfully delicious. I don't know now if I'll ever come in here & be able to not order at least a slice. Maybe the best fig newton I've ever had. Not like your conventional fig newtons that your folks got for you when you were a kid. This version is uber moist on the inside, & the "crust" was soft & tender. Not sweet. This is a very grown-up fig newton; & divinely so. The rugelach we ordered was a disappointment. It was dry AND bland. Pass. Overall, still very superior over the baked goods available in Sonoma. You may have more options there, but having more options of mediocrity is pointless, right? 4 &1/2 stars. read more

Because of the good Yelp reviews, I suggested this place today for a late lunch (a lil before 2pm) to a group of friends that were doing a wine tour. It was a HORRIBLE experience for us however... We were a group of 8 and we all walked in and got in 'line' at the same time. We briefly discussed that we would order to-go, take our food to the park and eat (cause it was so hot in the building) and then... I stepped up and ordered for my boyfriend and me. Well, apparently we placed our order with no problem but as our friends were trying to place theirs, the cook decided she was 'having a really bad day' and 'in a really testy mood' so, she refused to take anymore orders. Yes, you heard me right...SHE WANTED TO GO HOME SO SHE STOPPED TAKING ORDERS, even though she was breaking up a group. I protested that we were all together and they'd already let part of the group order, but the cook was throwing a lil fit in the back and the counter girl wouldn't go ahead and finish taking our order. She even said, 'I ask you if that was all'. Well, that was all for me but not for the other 6 people with me! I was shocked and disappointed after they had so many nice comments. In the end, 6 of our 8 group had to split and go eat down the road. Not cool. There was no relaxing park lunch, only irritation and confusion. As for the food, the breakfast pizza was good, we're gonna start baking an egg on top like they do when we make ours. The salad though, was nothing but some lettuce leaf with chopped up beats and walnuts. I don't know if that's usually how it is or if that was the 'quick' version. My client told me about this place and how their sticky buns were very good. I convinced my coworkers to come here for breakfast one morning. It was just after 8am and the parking was plentiful around the square in downtown Healdsburg. This place was small and there were already a few people eating their breakfast inside. One of the displays next to the refrigerator had all kinds of pastries and dessert items. The eclair I saw was big for $3 which I would say would be worth it. I actually came here just for a sticky bun ($2.50). The stick bun was warm and I assumed fresh. I didn't order any beverages so I can't comment on those. We didn't eat there but took our food to go. The sticky bun was delicious and very soft on the inside. I definitely recommend the sticky buns. The other food looked good here and I would have to try out the others if I'm in the area next time. read more
