Great food and fast friendly service. We had the wings and chicken bacon ranch sandwich. Both were excellent.

App: Loaded burnt end chips - I'm a sucker for a house made chip and these were great, I think they may have had the BBQ rub on them? Their seasoning on the chips was special Bf had smoked pork steak - EXCELLENT, was juicy and well seasoned Sides: potato salad and onion rings - great I had BBQ sampler (brisket, pulled pork, bratwurst and 1/4 rack ribs) - juicy, fall apart brisket, pulled pork was not dry like 90% of places, ribs were some of the best I've had and so was the bratwurst Sides: mac and cheese and hush puppies - the mac and cheese is not baked mac and cheese (I definitely prefer baked) but this was FANTASTIC. Hush puppies were great. I also had a Bloody Mary with their pickle vodka - it was perfect, not too spicy and they had a fresh (possibly homemade) pickle

The food came out quickly and was hot or chilled (slaw) correctly. The French fries were crispy (given to me to try BBQ sauce). The chicken sandwich was full of well smoked and seasoned chicken. The coleslaw was vinegar based and I just added some black pepper. The mustard sauce was excellent. The tea was good. The newer decor set the place off from the smokehouse menu. It seemed more of a bar than a smokehouse. I was an immediate fan.

For our pre-Christmas dinner, my husband brought me here…read more The place is located in downtown Waterloo. There were plenty of street parking available and within walking distance from the restaurant. When we arrived, we were greeted immediately and brought to an elevator. We were seated on the second floor overlooking the streets. The place is beautifully decorated from what looked like repurposed doors. I'm not sure if the door looks were intentional or they truly were repurposed. Either way, they gave the restaurant characters. Our waitress stopped by shortly after we were seated and took our drink orders. After she brought us our drinks, we placed an order for some smoked prawn roll (jalapeño cream cheese mousse, red pepper jelly, fried wanton and cucumber). Delicious! Next came our entrée. I ordered the 16 oz cowboy ribeye, medium rare. The steaks are a la carte. I ordered a side of brown butter asparagus to go with my steak. They offer accouterment for the steaks but I decided against it. My steak was prepared properly and was quite tasty. My husband had the grilled salmon which he also thoroughly enjoyed. For dessert, I ordered the chocolate grand Marnier creme caramel. It was divine! Overall, our dining experience was wonderful. Making the 20-minute trek was well worth it.

Don't miss Hopskeller on your next visit to Waterloo. We love this place. Reliably great beer,…read morewood-fired pizzas, and worn-in cozy atmosphere. We enjoy sitting upstairs or on the back patio in nicer weather - so many options for a get-together with friends. Service at the bar and the food service counter are excellent. Staff are friendly and always have helpful suggestions. We recently came for Sunday lunch the week of Christmas, and there wasn't much of a crowd. This was great for a relaxed lunch with the kids and brother visiting from out of town. Plenty of seating! There are kid-friendly options here, with the pizza and pub snack menu. My picky daughter (not a fan of pizza) enjoys the pretzels. There is something for everyone. The salads have fresh ingredients, made-to-order. Pizzas on the menu are excellent and can also be modified or build-your-own. Pizzas and other hot appetizers come out on paper-lined pans. When ordering salads, they come in a takeout box rather than a plate or dish. You may need an additional box or plate, because the salads are packed full and you might have a mess! Utensils are plastic. There is a bit of a disconnect because the food and overall cozy vibe seem worthy of real plates and silverware ;) but the plus side is quick table turnover on the busy days or the days where everyone is out on the patio. It's nice to be able to order and pay at the food service counter. You will want to stay a while, but you'll be free to leave whenever you're ready to move on to your next stop!
