The best casual, fancy restaurant I've been to. I've heard about Valentine's for years, I just never had the opportunity to eat there. In town for my mom's birthday, I asked my sister & brother in law to make reservations for us. I had the 14oz ribeye. Perfectly marbled and tender; cooked to perfection. My husband's filet was prepared just the way he wanted it (trust me, he never says steak is good-but he did say that his filet was good!!!) The toasted ravioli, shrimp cocktail & crab Rangoon appetizers were a hit. The service was great. Our waitress greeted us and was taking drink orders before we could open the menu. Do make a reservation. Don't over dress. From shorts and a t-shirt to sundresses....all are acceptable. read more

This is a small, quaint little restaurant, set up in an older home! They have DELICIOUS steaks and chops with your usual accompanying sides(Salad, Baked Potatoe, vegetable). We used to go there 2-3 times a year, for their ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS battered & fried Frog Legs, in a light gravy!! BUT.... UNFORTUNATELY & TO MY DISMAY...for SOME REASON they no longer have them!!! Really good steaks. I had their house made blue cheese dressing, very good. The service was excellent. The ambiance was old school German in a German small town. Food came out fast. Just be careful of the steak seasoning if you're sensitive. But sometimes the taste and experience outweigh the outcome. So minus one star for that. Otherwise I would give it 5 stars. read more

First timers so take that at what it is, service was good and attentive, we started with their signature Lobster Rangoons unfortunately made with imitation lobster of some kind, thank heavens for the spicy chili sauce which was excellent. I'd like to rate this place higher, but I have to agree with some previous reviews that they reeeeally need to clean and update this place! We didn't have any issues with service, and we were there on Valentine's Day. We stood outside with a LOT of other old people who had nothing better to do at 4PM on a weekday... The food was good, though we didn't order steak which I feel is almost sacrilegious at a place like this. I ordered the shrimp skewers and hubby ordered the chicken breasts. We were tryin' for a little healthier. For sides I had the green beans (good) and the coleslaw (great). The slaw wasn't creamy, which I hate, but more of a sweet and sour, which I LOVE. We splurged and shared the brownie with ice cream for dessert and it was SO decadent! Wish they had some specialty cocktails, since they have a full bar. Simply the best steak in the metro St.louis area! Family owned for years. About half the price of most big name steak houses. The service is EXCELLENT, not over bearing, but right there if needed. Very intimate, small place, very nice atmosphere, about 20-25 tables. No need to dress up unless it's YOUR anniversary. We mentioned it was our 25th anniversary and after meal we were surprised with complimentary home made cheesecake! This place overall is pretty good, I wouldn't say amazing but pretty good. I got the ribeye and it was flavorful and cooked correctly, just a little pricey I thought but not outrageous at all. The steak was honesty a 8.5/10 but other than the ribeye or another steak I can't say the rest of the menu was very appealing. The service was good especially considering the 12 people we had. My friend, my dad, and I went here for the US Marine Corps birthday. We frequently get together for that occasion and celebrate the birth of our beloved Corps. One of the best steaks I've ever had. I had the strip. The original owner was also a former Marine and we did not know that. It was a nice treat and we chatted with his daughter and she gave us a history of the place. There's not much better than Valentine's. We've been coming for years, but it has been several since we've been. We went last night, and it was as satisfying of an experience as ever before. It would've been my parents' 33rd anniversary, so we ordered a honorary Bloody Mary for my dad's seat. Between the three of us dining, we had two sirloins and a ribeye. Mom and I upgraded our salads to include their housemade bleu cheese dressing. SO worth it. Each steak was cooked spot on. Everything was delicious. Mom got the caramel cheesecake for dessert. Holy cow! That was one of the best desserts I've ever had, hands down. The waitress knew it would've been my parents anniversary, and she brought out two small chocolate desserts that they do in honor of anniversaries. Not only was it delicious, it was the sweetest gesture I've experienced at a restaurant. I wish I could give more stars! read more

The only reason I give this establishment at 3 is because they produce an excellent ribeye steak and baked potato dinner. I've had their other steak options and they are not nearly as good. The restaurant is outdated, the service is poor but friendly, and the other food items are mediocre at best. I have dined at this restaurant in numerous times and it's always the same. The appetizers are straight from the freezer section and nothing is fresh made outside of the blue cheese dressing, which is really really strong and the seasoning for the steaks. My wife and I come here strictly for the ribeye and the baked potato, outside of that, there's really nothing worth ordering on the menu. So if you're in the mood for an excellent ribeye steak, this is the place to be. Just keep in mind that that's really all you're here for. You're still going to play about $30 per plate, so be prepared. read more

This is a follow up review that I did some months ago with a bad experience of having a far too salty steak. Went back again tonight and was overwhelmed with every aspect of the restaurant. Homemade blue cheese dressing was fabulous; baked potato was perhaps the softest, best tasting potato I have ever had; the rib eye was seasoned to perfection and cooked just right. The atmosphere was nice with dimmed lighting and a romantic feel but the TV in the bar seemed out of place and distracting. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The service was super fast, we had our steaks within 15 minutes of walking in the door! About the food, it seemed somewhat average. We both ordered the large filet and were pleasantly surprised by the size of the steaks. We ordered them medium and they were cooked well but the cut of meat was not as tender as expected. There was a nice teriyaki flavor in the first few bites but then the steak was tough and needed to be chewed a while. The cheesecake for dessert was wonderful! While our food was wonderful, I got the feeling you have to be a regular to get service here. We watched as the bartender skipped over us to make other drinks after she took our order. While it seemed they were very friendly to people they knew we were new so didn't feel very welcome. I can see why people go back because our dinner really was delicious. My husband and I found this gem on accident. I am so glad we did! Florence was our server and she was not only amazing with her service, every recommendation she gave was spot on and incredible. My filet was to die for and cooked a perfect medium rare! The bleu cheese dressing is a must try and make sure you do the loaded baked potato. On trips to St Louis we always plan a stop at Valentines--we have been doing this maybe 4-5 times a year. The first time we ate there I left saying, "That was the best steak I've ever eaten." I also said, "That was the best blue cheese dressing I've ever had". Well, its 5 years since our first visit and its still the best strip steak and blue cheese dressing I have had. The green beans and baked potato are good too. Sadly, the last time we went my strip was a bit tough, but still very flavorful. I hope that was an anomaly and not a sign that they have changed the source of all those other fine steaks I have had there. The service is always fast and friendly and the atmosphere is casual. Staying in Mascoutah on vacation as my husband showed me around the area where he grew up. Stopped into Valentine's for dinner. Absolutely exceptional meal! I had the sirloin; hubby had the bacon wrapped pork chops. Tender & flavorful. Like above, not sure if the grade of steak was down a notch but it was well cooked to order and delicious. Truly the best blue cheese dressing I have ever had. (It's homemade) Had the pleasure of meeting the owners. Very nice & down to earth. We ordered the large fillet and the pork loin. Also the fried dumpling appetizer. The dumpling appetizer came with a sweet and sour sauce. Not what you normally get it was ok but not as good as a traditional sauce. They were out of the pork loin so ordered the grilled chicken in its place. It was thin chicken breast and somewhat dry. The filet was good the chicken and steak were marinaded in a soy teriyaki sauce that made them a little too salty for my taste. Too much soy. The baked potato was hot and delicious. Wasn't a bad meal but not into their marinade. The waitress staff was excellent. They never missed a beat drinks always full and they were busy. The appetizer salad and meal were well timed. So that being said the reason for 3 stars is the marinade, the sauce for the dumplings and for not having the pork loin. read more
