Our previous 10' x 20' deck appeared to be a DIY project, wasn't properly attached to the house, and was starting to rot. Based on the reviews, we had Creative Fences & Decks come out and give us a quote. From that initial consultation we were very impressed. Michael came out and spent at least 1.5 hours with us as we explained our ideas, gave us advice on what would look best for our space, and drafted the final design. This included an itemized quote for various different options before he left. We never felt pressured on time and really felt like he was invested in identifying what our best options were. We went with Ipe wood as we felt it would look the best with our wooded backyard setting and were extremely happy. The project was on the expensive side; however, based on how much time we plan to spend outside, and the quality of the materials and work, it was worth it. George did the actual work on the deck and he was very friendly and professional, and did a great job removing all the scrap pieces (including nails) after completion. I hired Creative to refinish my deck with ipe and add stairs. They cost significantly more than the alternatives, but I am OK with paying a premium for a worry-free job. Immediately after they finished, the railing top they installed warped and exposed big gaps at the mitered edges. It was a nearly 1/4" gap - that kind of build tolerance just looks terrible. I paid the bill in full because I trust a reputable operation to fix something like that. But once I paid, it was virtually impossible to get a response from Mitica. After weeks of trying to track him down, he finally agreed to a small credit. But he never followed through. I ended up having to pay a different contractor to come back and replace his shoddy work with sheet metal. After the fact, Mitica said the wood often warps when it's attached to an existing railing. So why would he perform the work in the first place, knowing that it will come out badly? And once it does come out very badly, why wouldn't he follow through with some remedy? It is very frustrating to deal with a supposedly premium contractor who does business like this. read more

We hired CF&D back in 2019 to build our backyard fence. They did a solid job. Back then they quoted us to renovate our backyard patio and we decided to postpone the project to 2020. We worked with Constantin and it was a good overall experience. Then the pandemic hit and further delayed things for us until this January (2021) we reached out to get the quote updated. This time Constantin asked us to work with Michael. This review is purely about our experience with him. Initially he was reasonably responsive to calls and messages. I sent him the original quote so he'd have a starting point and know what the job was about. To weeks after our first call he visited the home (which is being rented) and despite us coordinating a time that was suitable to his availability with both tenant and another contractor, he was late - in hindsight, this was a warning sign. He promised he would get us the quote the day after the visit. A week later, nothing. Two weeks. Almost three weeks. Not even a courtesy response to my text messages. So I texted Constantin to ask for his help and he responded promptly that he would ask Michael to reply. About 6 weeks from our original conversation Michael texted that they wouldn't provide a quote as it was too small of a job. He had the original quote and knew the size of the job from day 1 through his colleagues quote. He knew the size of the job first-hand after visiting. And yet he decided that 1 minute of his time sending me a text message was worth more than 6 weeks of my and my tenant's time. I hope CF&D takes a second look at its customer service values. If they do, they'll do great. If they don't, they will sink into mediocrity once the pandemic home investing boom is over. Or perhaps Michael just needs a 1 minute lesson from Constantin on how to treat (repeat) customers. read more

17 years ago this company replaced the front steps to our home. The Iron Wood that was used remains a beautiful material to this day. During the cold winter winds in January, three sections of our fence blew down. It was built by my husband and father in law 35 years ago. Of course the first contractor I contacted was Creative Fences and Decks. Their bid included different options for constructing the new fence. We did get one additional bid from a different contractor which was competitive with Creative Fences and Decks. We decided to have the fence replaced by Creative Fences and Decks. The quality and construction of our fence is outstanding. I am a quilter and watching the craftsman setting the posts, making sure each was plumb and constructing the fence panels reminded me of the care I take in piecing each quilt block I make. Every day it is such a pleasure to look out my kitchen window and see the beautiful fence we have surrounding our back yard. They also built a new fence gate. It's like the frosting on the cake and is a pleasure to open and close. Creative Fences and Decks are wonderful craftsmen and are really great to work with. Outstanding!!! From start to finish Creative Fences and Decks were AMAZING! Mitica, (the owner) came out and thoroughly discussed options, listened to us, and then provided input as to what we wanted to have done. He measured the space and came up with a detailed quote. Additionally, we needed to have our old deck (1300 sq ft) torn off and hauled away and they also did the same with a separate hot tub area. The foreman of our job, John, was incredibly detailed with an exceptional work ethic! They would arrive at 7am and work until almost 7 pm. The entire crew was professional and they communicated with us constantly as the work was being done. The job was finished earlier than anticipated and exceeded our expectations! On time, worked continuously, and gave us a fantastic new deck! We couldn't be happier.

I used Angie's List to locate highly rated deck builders and had four bids. The bid by the owner of Creative Fences and Decks, MItika, was lower than the others (I bargained with him a bit). I chose ipe decking and aluminum railing, at Mitika's suggestion, since it is very low maintenance, long-lasting and the decking ecologically harvested. Each of the three other builders were affable, but had constructed only one or two ipe decks each, so the choice wasn't difficult. Mitika arrived and gave a bid the same day I called him and was very businesslike. Creative Fences and Decks removed two old decks and installed 292 ft. of 1 x 6 ipe decking and 59 linear feet of elliptical top aluminum railing with horizontal stainless steel cables. His crew was able to start two days earlier than expected and finished two days later than expected (due to rain). After initially stepping on a daylily, and asking them to avoid trampling the plants, they were very conscientious about keeping off the flora. I suspect the plants would've been fairly well trampled down by most builders. You couldn't tell they were there afterward. Cleanup after construction by the hard-working and somewhat voluble crew was very thorough and the deck rock solid and a work of art. After two years, there has been only a slight change (3 mm) in the level of one section of the deck relative to an adjacent section. read more

Mitica and his team were the best contractors I have hired in my 20 years of home renovating (I'm a homeowner who has updated three homes over fifteen years). Mitica's team was straightforward with what they said they would do, they stuck to their budget, showed up on time, worked hard (even in really cold rainy weather) and produced a product better than we had imagined. They built a 27' x 12' covered patio with clear cedar, and tied the A frame roof into my existing roof line. They did not waste time or resources and were respectful to my family (we have five kids under age 10), and our property. They cleaned up each day, never complained and were very hard workers. Went to their website probably two months ago to have them contact me for advice and estimate on two backyard gates plus some fencing. When I didn't hear back after a month, I sent an email to the company requesting they get back to me even if they didn't have time to come out to look at the job. Absolute silence from them. Given the experience I had with them just to get an estimate, I have a lot of doubt as to how quickly they would complete a job. Customer service doesn't seem high on their list. read more

I had an older wood deck rebuilt by Creative Fences and Decks. All of the deck except for the support beams were removed and replaced with Trex and the wooden railing was replaced with metal railing. The end result is extremely satisfying. The deck looks great. I watched most of the work as it was being done and the end result is a deck that looks much better and is more structurally sound than the original deck as extra support beams were installed. The deck is so solid that walking on it is like walking on concrete. All of the work was done by one person - Constantin. This caused the job to take longer than I anticipated but the bottom line is that I am very satisfied with the final result. Pros and Cons: Cons: Creative was not the cheapest solution and came in about 10% higher than my other bid. I chose them anyway because I felt much more comfortable with their design and attention to detail. Job was delayed a week beyond the scheduled date. Job took a little longer than I anticipated, probably because only one person did the entire thing. This resulted in our driveway (staging area) being blocked for a large part of about 10 days.) Pros: Constantin sought our input on anything that presented an option on more than one way to complete a portion. Every day before leaving, Constantin cleaned up construction debris which kept our back yard from looking like a disaster. The end result met or exceeded all of our expectations. The bottom line is that I would not hesitate to use Creative again for a project such as this and also would highly recommend them to anyone contemplating a similar project. read more

It was 8/10/2010 when I signed the contract for an old deck disposal and a new 36' X 10" Trex deck with 4 steps to a lower Trex platform. Also installed were five 48" wide steps with 6 step lights, 52 linear feet X 36" tall cable fencing and a cable gate at the top of the stairs. A bronze SAPA aluminum railing was itegrated into the fencing and gate. Addtionally a gorgeous 12' X 24' vaulted white cedar canopy (to match my existing vaulted roofline) with 4 skylights, 8 cam lights, a ceiling fan, and a pendant light were built. This project finally began on about 11/23/2021. Their were many unforseen delays due to all the fires, smoke, and many Covid related issues. But this project moved quickly once they got started. I had a superior team of brothers, Nick an Jessie, working together on my project. They worked like a well oiled machine, very courteous, and quite knowledgeable about what they were doing. They were always willing to stop what they were doing to answer my questions, or get my attention when they had questions for me. It was absolutely amazing to see how efficiently Nick and Jessie worked together, as well as how much they achieved in a day of work. The project grinded to a halt several times. Michael would say the all the right things on the phone, but I seriously wondered what was really happening. Lack of communication on his part was to me a major fault. Sometimes it was related to outside contractors they had hired. Sometimes it was related to supplies. Bottom line, I was not kept up to date! The project was not finished until 3/4/2021. All in all, I am quite pleased wih the end result. It is only because of the communication issues I had with Michael did I rate this review as 4 stars. read more

I don't recommend them, but if you use them, make sure you have them pull permits. Our mistake for not doing so, and they did not attach the deck to the house legally (even though they said it would be to code). Then they wouldn't stand behind their workmanship when we tried to permit the deck after the fact. Mitica was not ethical to deal with, and we had to have another company repair their poor work. We tried to file a CCB complaint, but the home had been sold and they said we couldn't. read more

I'm a landscape designer and choosing a contractor to help with my personal home project was a huge decision. I did my homework, received estimates from multiple contractors, and examined examples of finished projects. My design included a new front porch, back deck and built in seating around a gas fire pit all using IPE hardwood with requested details and elements that were not completely typical in construction. Creative Fences built 150 plus feet of fencing in our back yard 3 years ago. We liked the work so much that we invited them to build another fence in our front side yard. The bids both times were the lowest and the quality of work is excellent. Mitica is the owner of the company. He gave us honest, detailed bids. He kept all promises made. His work crew were xcellent and professional. They cleaned up carefully, restoring the flower bed to its former look. We hired Creative Fences and Decks to replace our 15 year old fence which had recently fallen over on one side and was sagging on the other side due to rotten posts. They replaced it with a beautiful picture frame fence with lattice in the front and a hideaway panel where we can park our garbage and recycling bins out of sight from the street. They completed the work within the estimate they initially gave us and the fencers were considerate and up front with us on every step of the project. The project took longer than expected due to bad weather for setting concrete, and one of the fencers needed immediate surgery, leaving just one fencer to complete the majority of the job. Creative fencing and decks did an incredible job on my fence! They did it in clear cedar which is normally the most expensive cedar wood you can buy but managed to be very competitive vs other contractors. Super easy to work with and professional. They got the job done exactly the length they said it would take and left my house in better shape than when they started. Also a plus is they have a guy who makes custom steel powder coated supports that go into the concrete and stick out of the ground for the posts to attach to. Other competitors did not offer the same. This allows me to fix or replace sections without having to rip out future posts. I will be using them for future projects and referring them to friends and family. read more

My neighbors and I hired Creative Fences & Decks to build a new fence, add some gates, etc. We could not have been happier with the results - everyone is stopping by to ask who built our new fence. These guys do high end stuff (clear cedar, posts every 6' vs. every 8', etc) and it really shows. The process starts with their sales person (in our case it was Luca) that comes out to review your project / needs. He pays a lot of attention to detail and will do a good job of explaining to you the different options you would have and how what they do is different. The guys that actually build the fence (in our case it was mostly Lomo) take the time to verify and ask any questions they have about details that may not have been thought about before. I personally LOVE that, because it really drives home that they do things right and want to customize anything they can to your needs. They were not the cheapest bid we received, but surprisingly (based on the quality of work they do) they were not the most expensive bid we received either. If you are looking for a quality fence, these guys are the best in the Portland area! read more

We had an incredible Ipe Deck built last summer across the back oof the house...and it still brings me joy every-time I look outside. Overall, I am not happy with the fence considering the price (paid about $14,000 for about 180 linear feet of fence, which encloses a small backyard, plus gate). We used clear cedar, which is an expensive fence material, but their quote was the highest out of 3 we received. We chose Creative based on their website photos, a recommendation from a landscape architect, and their proclaimed commitment to "high-quality construction...for the discerning homeowner". Not quite - take a look at the fence pics taken just a few short months after installation. Pros: The staff (fence builder and sales rep) was professional, responsive, and easy to work with. The initial appearance of the clear cedar they used was very good - most slats have (had) a uniform vertical grain pattern. The craftsmanship of the custom gate they built was also very good - high quality wood with very clean joinery. They completed the project in a timely manner and cleaned up the work site well. Cons: Initially, the fence looked very good. However, shortly after it was built we noticed black splotchy stains appearing where the brad nails were installed. After some research, I learned that this happens when zinc coated nails are used with cedar. Stainless steel nails should be used to avoid this problem. I brought this to the attention of the company owner, and he said that my quoted price did not reflect the use of more expensive stainless nails. First of all, I was never presented with the option of using stainless steel nails. Why would I pay $14K for a fence and choose to use cheaper nails that stain it? Of course if I was given the choice I would not have chosen nails that stain the fence, but no such option was presented. He offered no compensation nor help to fix the problem, except that I can use wood bleach to remove the blemishes. Doing this over 180 linear feet of fence is not a trivial task and leaves white spots where the black spots were. I would have to bleach the entire fence to get a uniform color. After several months, the fence began showing severe water stains. I expressed to the sales rep before the fence was built that we might choose to not stain or seal the fence to let it age naturally and develop a silver/gray patina. Cedar is naturally pest and rot resistant, and letting it gray without treatment is a common practice which I've seen done successfully. I was never told by the sale rep or the owner after mentioning this that the fence would turn into a striped nightmare! The gate has it the worst...it looks terrible! Even if we had chosen to stain the fence, the fence was installed during the rainy season in Portland, and fences are not supposed to be stained or sealed until after they've dried out, which can't happen until the summer here. The fence started looking like this in late spring. I showed the owner these pictures, and he said that I'll need to sand the fence before staining it! Again, no offer to do anything to help fix the problem, just "it's something that happens to wood". I have never seen a fence that looks like this, even ones that were left unstained to age naturally. Despite claiming that "complete customer satisfaction is their highest priority", they apparently have no quality guarantee. Basically, they build it and are not responsible for any quality issues after that. Like I said, I mentioned that we might leave the fence unstained, and no one said anything. Other problems: -Some boards are already badly bowed and sagging. read more

My neighbor contracted Creative Fences & Decks to replace their cedar fence. Because my neighbor had built a storage shed and planted multiple trees along his property line he asked that the work be done from my property. Work began during heavy rains. The bark dust was trampled and washed away on the berm next to the fenceline, plants damaged, and 20 feet of gravel path now looks like half mud half gravel. No effort was made to lay down board or tarps to protect the gravel from debris. When I saw the damage being done I expressed my concern and said I didn't want the work to continue on my property. I was told that whatever damage was done would be made right. My neighbor told me that the job was quoted to be completed in one week. Instead the job took three weeks. When the job was complete two bags of bark dust were brought out and spread, but Mitica refused to do anything about repairing the damage to the gravel path. He told me that I now had the pleasure of looking at his beautifully crafted fence. read more
