So since Crechale's announced they were closing it has been jam packed! It used to be easy stop here for a quick meal... now expect to wait at least an hour or more for a seat. The old school ambiance is still fantastic which is about the best part of my most recent experience here. They open at 4pm and I arrived a bit before 4:30 and they were already selling out of things. It was crowded but not crazy crowded so I was surprised they had so quickly sold out of things. They also seemed to be very slow at getting tables cleaned up and ready for the next guests. Obviously the very above normal crowds visiting for one last hurrah are far above what the staff are used to dealing with. When I finally got seated I was able to order an iced tea and water which are served in tiny little glasses. I NEVER got my iced tea refilled... My salad came out but no silverware to eat it with which I did get silverware about 15 minutes later. The first thing I ordered was sold out so I went with my second choice which they still had. I started out with my tiny salad which was OK then I had onion rings which were very good. For my main course I had stuffed shrimp which were alright but I have had far better ones. So then the check arrived and for the cost and really bad service it simply wasn't worth it. I still left a 20% tip which absolutely was not earned but this was my goodbye to this joint and I won't ever be back as they are soon closing forever. This was the worst experience of my life regarding a restaurant owner and I traveled for a living in medical device sales all over the US, application specialist , clinical laboratory scientist, worked at a restaurant for over 8 years to pay for my college, disabled now. First time here for dinner, I was called ignorant by the owner because I didn't know their credit card machine was down after I was served and checking out at front. I had 3 different people visiting my table at least 8 times and nobody said cash only. I went to an ATM to pay the owner after and I was called ignorant over the intercom, really, that is the owner/manager responsibility before they serve you and the most disgusting person I met threatening to call the cops and not come back when I came back to pay with cash. I highly, highly do not recommend this place or treatment for a disabled single woman. read more

There are too many other places in town with MUCH better food for the money. This is a cool old icon of Jackson's better days. The decor is classic 1950's restaurant. Nothing has changed. The drinks are in the tiny diner style water glasses. The rolls are fantastic. As others have said, the onion rings are a highlight. The Comeback salad dressing is one of the finest examples of this dressing I've had. Things go downhill from here. The steaks are thin, fatty, and appear to be cooked on a flat grill. The stuffed flounder is mostly tasteless. The best flavor comes from the stuffing inside it. Dessert is a small pastry crust with watery pudding in it covered completely with whipped cream. The Birthday song gets played on the jukebox every time I've been there. People definitely come here for special occasions. Unfortunately I have to say that's the only time I ever go, as an attendee at someone's party. It may be worth a try to experience an aged iconic restaurant. The steak was small, the potato was small , the salad was small. The steak wasn't well seasoned like you would think for a $36 piece of meat. And I only like salt and pepper on mine. The owner of place a real nice gentleman came out to check on you like it use to be when you eat at a place. So that was real nice. Even brought out some kind of desert to try. Not worth $192!!! I sent my stuffed crab back because it was so dry. One of my kids ordered the beef kabobs not worth $47.50 for 5 little medallions. This restaurant came highly recommended by several folks I work with. Ate there today and was underwhelmed. I ordered the snapper and it wasn't as good as I was expecting. It was too thin and tasteless. Not sure what "snapper" this was from, but not a very large one. My wife ordered the fried catfish and it was passable. She mentioned that what I cook is better. My son ordered the stuffed crab and it was good. This was the highlight of the evening. The waitress was almost deaf and I felt as if I was yelling to place our order. The cost was too high. I do not live in Jackson, but every time I drive through on I-20 (maybe twice a year) I make it a point to stop at Crechale's. They specialize in seafood and steaks. I often get a fried seafood assortment plate. There's plenty of seafood and the taste is superior. I make sure that I have plenty of time to enjoy the food without having to hurry. Personally, I just like the seafood without any sauce (tartar or red sauce). Stuffed flounder - superior. I'm so full from seafood that I don't have room for desert. So, was looking forward to this. This is a very old school restaurant. Iam not too sure where ALL of the great reviews come from but I would have to disagree to a point. Ste it it was tender but probably the fattiest Ribeye I ever had. The tail of the steak was a 6 ounce chunk of unedible fat. The other 2 in my party ordered the filet. They were not impressed. Very very small and thin almosy looked like a sausage patty. But they said it was tender and tasty just looked odd. Everything comes with baked potato and dalad with coice of wait... come back dressing.. no other choice.. i like it so it didnt bother me. I wouldnt advise for or against on this place. The seafood is fantastic, the steaks are superb, and the atmosphere is like a small-town cafe, complete with a juke box in the corner. Linen tablecloths cover the table while a 'Flo-like' waitress takes your order. And the homemade pie is to die for! If you don't mind paying handsomely for an absolutely superb meal, complete with a wine selection, while in a 'diner' atmosphere with casually dressed locals, this is the place for you! We ate Valentine's dinner at Crechale's. Fortunately, little has changed. Still USDA Prime steaks and fresh seafood, fried or broiled. We love the broiled scallops in a white wine butter sauce. I add a little fresh lemon and it is seafood heaven. If you want to have a selection of seafood, the seafood platter is available broiled or fried. Trout Almondine is really good. Our eleven year old said that the scallops are delicious. The steaks are basically plain grilled USDA prime steaks. Prime steaks are well marbled and need little seasoning beyond salt and pepper and maybe a little butter. There are other restaurants for marinated USDA choice steaks and elaborate sauces and toppings. Entrees are served with a small salad, homemade comeback dressing, and choice of baked potato or French fries. Truly outstanding homemade onion rings are available as an appetizer or extra. Friendly service and still the best juke box in the Jackson area. Where else are you going to find Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Sr., Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Pete Fountain and a few more modern greats? Closed Monday and Tuesday. read more

Once a year we travel to south Jackson to celebrate Christmas at Crechale's. The restaurant is festive, the waitstaff is the best and you are greeted with a warm welcome from the owner. We absolutely love the experience of the restaurant but it is not for everyone. The food is average but pricey, the portions are huge. Order the onion rings, pour Comeback sauce on everything! Fried catfish is very good! It is an authentic vintage family owned restaurant with 1960's decor and a jukebox in the corner. You're guaranteed to sing "Happy Birthday" with each visit. This is a local haunt with the splendor and decadence reaching far back into the last century. Crechale's will likely reach into the next one as well. I can only speak to the Ribeye and fries. When I said rare, they knew what I meant. They know how to cook a steak my friends. You absolutely should not look for better quality. Crechale's seems best suited for parties of more than three. They have an interactive staff and provide an atmosphere of fun and delight. Wine flows freely here and is served with dignity. The rating schemes are deceptive on yelp. I am saddened to hear that two elderly gay friends of mine were treated poorly at Crechale's recently. I have been frequenting this place for years. I cannot in good conscious visit anymore. Unfortunately, I think this may be one of the first cases of legalized discrimination in Mississippi. I will be calling Jackson Free Press, clarion ledger and WLBT 3 on your side next week so they can investigate the bartender using gay slurs towards elderly customers. I went here on local hotel staff recommendation. This old Hwy 80 restaurant has obviously been here a very long time. That makes for an interesting atmosphere - It's like stepping back in time. Something tells me it used to be a bar. The service is very personal and the staff is very attentive. I can recommend the onion ring appetizers to start. They boast about their beef quality so I had the "Prime Ribeye" $28 Well, I was disappointed. The baked potato was great (though small) but the steak was thin and roasted. My husband and I found an ad for Crechales,so thought we would give it a try. We had supper there on wed. October 24th. I had the fillet mignon and it was wonderful, seasoned perfectly and you could cut it with a fork. My husband ordered the stuffed flounder, unfortunately it was blacked. Not good, but if you liked blackened fish, then you should like it. My only suggestion is that the menu needs to specify how things are seasoned. Crechale's gets one star for a combination of the hearty greeting at the door, and the quick and pleasant service, and the great music on the jukebox. But I won't be back. The famous onion rings are good, though undeserving of the many accolades. The menu is small and the wine list smaller. We ordered the "prime beef" ribeye, broiled flounder and broiled speckled trout. The steak was a strangely shaped ribeye, looking more like a strip, which would have been OK with me. But it was most assuredly not prime beef - far from it. The steak was $36, and was not the equal of an $11 steak at a chain steakhouse. It was cooked correctly to medium rare. The flounder, deboned tableside, was inedible, and we sent it back to the kitchen. Advertised as fresh, it had an "off" flavor, as though spoiled. It was replaced by broiled "speckled trout", which might have been speckled trout, but most likely not. It was just barely OK. And it was also around $32. The baked potatoes were foil wrapped, a sure sign that they had been baked hours ago and kept warm. They had that texture. The salads were good, though very simple and very small. In summary, the food was merely adequate had the prices been 1/3 of the actual prices. At the actual prices it's very surprising that anyone ever returns to dine there a second time. A final insult was that the waitstaff won't take your credit card at the table - you have to take the bill to the cash register and wait while the hostess prepares and prints the credit slip. You have to tell her how much your tip is. There are many, many restaurants in the Jackson metropolitan area which are far, far better - and less expensive. read more
