Went to Creole Kitchen on a Wednesday night to get takeout. It's located in the boonies of Columbus, in an old strip mall. The inside looks like it needs to be well cleaned and updated...not the best impression. But the reviews were good so we ordered food nonetheless. We went for the Gumbo, 1/2 order of the crawfish étouffée and a full order of the chicken andouille jambalaya. Spice level 2. Service was ok, more or less friendly although slow. They did not have the check-in offer to get free Cajun chips. Apparently they haven't had the chips in a long time. Maybe it's about time to take the offer off?? The most important part of a restaurant for me is the taste of the food and I was kind of disappointed. The crawfish étouffée was too spicy for me to eat (although it was only a spice level of 2)and tasted kind of spoiled. I would not recommend!! The gumbo wasn't bad, a bit too spicy for my taste but decent. I did really enjoy the jambalaya. A full order weighs at least 2 pounds and is saucy full of chicken and sausage (which reminded me of cheap hotdogs) and very tasty. The level 2 of the jambalaya is what I would consider a level 2, spicy but not overly too much. I even overlooked the hotdogs/sausage because the whole dish was yummy. Overall an ok experience. Restaurant/ takeout space desperately needs some love and attention. Food is hit & miss. Service is ok. I don't think I'll be coming back for more. Well we tried this place for the first time tonight. Gumbo was awesome. A nice rich and dark roux with the perfect texture. We also ordered the Crawfish Etoufee which comes with 2 sides. Well I checked my takeout box before we left the parking lot and noticed that there was no rice with the Etoufee. Yes, there was a side of dirty rice which we ordered as one of our sides and our second side of grilled cabbage but the Etoufee had no rice. I went back in and questioned this but I was told that Etoufee doesn't come with rice. Ok, so I went home and made rice to go with the Etoufee, because really, who has ever heard of Etoufee without rice? The flavor of the Etoufee was very good! We enjoyed it with the white rice that we made at home! We will return because the flavors of the food was very good but next time I want my Etoufee to come with rice! read more

Oh, man, what delicious food! We got the Crawfish Étouffée, Shrimp Étouffée, and picked as our included sides dirty rice, Creole rice, roasted potatoes and coleslaw. Everything was amazing. Plus, you can choose your spice level, from zero to five. Three was perfect for me (and pretty spicy), and Two was perfect for my spouse (nice zing, but no runny nose). The roux based brown sauce of the Étouffées was rich and full of complex flavors. The coleslaw was some the best I've had: vinegar based, with a nice kick and super crunchy. The dirty rice was also a standout: very flavorful and with a nice amount of heat. Nice friendly folks serving, too. And only about 20 minutes from order to heading home with all this goodness for lunch. Ok as usual I always try out the local venues. I ordered the Blackened Salmon dinner and gator bites with sweetened tea. The salmon was dried as if it were freezer burned and not of quality salmon. The sides I ordered were the mac and cheese, (dry and bland) and the grilled cabbage which was ok just too oily. The appetizer I had was the gator bites which were tender but had no flavor what so ever. Now the gator sauce you get with it would have been great on good gator. My favorite thing was the sweet tea which was the only thing I finished besides the gator bites. Will I return, I'm not sure but I do tend to try other things to give the restaurant a fair review. Good place to try a change of cuisine. We came here for breakfast on a Saturday soon after the new opening of the dining room. Plenty of tables available for a crowd. Tables were pushed together for a table of 12 while we were there. Wheelchair ramp will allow access to every part of this place. Of course everything was clean. After all, everything is new. Some minor things were being attended to, while we dined. Today it was running coaxial to mounted televisions. We had to change tables just before our meal because of cold air coming in from this installation. Service is really off. Perhaps they did not hire experienced servers. This is a place that established itself as a carryout with a counter. I observed the dining room patrons being punished by the kitchen. Patrons questioned the higher prices in the dining room vs the carryout counter prices next door. We saw patrons leaving their table to get carryout. They would walk past the front window with their carryout before our food came out. This happened multiple times, and still no food for us. If not for the beignets not ordered first, I'm sure we would have passed out from a 50 minute hungry wait. Refills were slow as well. Glad I did not order coffee. My wife received a 32oz. carafe of hot water for her hot tea. Again it took 20min for it to arrive. The food was good. The Bayou omelettes was overcooked brown on the inside, but stuffed with great flavored filling. Tassi ham, andoujie sausage, crawfish, peppers, onion, and cheese. We had to ask about the bread. It tasted SO good. It was from a local bakery. Potatoes were good, but should have been served hot. She found her eggs, and bacon cooked perfectly to order. The menu online is different from what is at the restaurant, so be careful to wait to determine what your mouth is watering for... I'm born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. So I hold Cajun and creole food at a high standard because many people tend to do their own take or interpretation of it. Creole Kitchen definitely meets that mark. They pass what I like to call..."the gumbo test" because they had it in the menu and the flavors were great and with a solid dark roux. We also got Jerk Wings, which were tiny, but not bad. I personally would say they aren't a Jamaican Jerk. Finally, we also had a poboy that had a great muffuletta salad to top it all off. The one area for improvement would be service. Don't get me wrong, I understand they are a locally owned small business. But I think service fundamentals are still needed for the longevity of a business. The server brought one drink, but not my drink for me and my friend. Then the order of the food came out incorrectly and my drink ran out several times before someone would check on us. Net, food is great. They have a takeout walk up next to the restaurant. We drove by and weren't certain if they were actually open. Really small, glad we stopped. Chicken and sausage jambalaya (5-spicy hot). Shrimp étouffée. (4 - spicy hot) Beignets. The meal is cooked to order and was ready in 15 minutes. Enjoyed the meal immensely. The dining area is tiny but suitable. This place is very blue collar and friendly. The cooks were keenly interested in our spice request and checked up on us. The meal for our palettes was not too hot. Thermally it was nuclear! Very freshly cooked and we did not finish either plate due to size. The full order is sharable. Half is about right. I am no expert on Creole food but what I ate seemed authentic and prepared with care. We would definitely make this place a regular haunt if we lived here. When we first got to the location we were kinda confused because we didn't know whether or not it was a takeout only or dine in. Once we figured that out we ordered our food and asked the cashier do they offer dine in and she told us that the dining area is next door. A sign would be nice telling customers what is what. Also considering this was our first time trying creole food. We were hoping to find out what their known for : i.e meaning what is there special dish.. unfortunately the cashier couldn't help us. Yum! Dare I say it: I love the shrimp po' boys here as much as I like the ones in NOLA. Blasphemy! My standard order: shrimp po'boy, fully dressed, slathered with tartar sauce; a side of rice and beans; and a Pepsi (no Coke products). I used to heart their Creole chips, but this month I discovered that they're no longer being served. Sad! Honestly, the sandwich is big and you can easily make two meals out of it. I finally had time this Saturday to try it, and was in the mood for something different. First and foremost, they make some KILLER Mac & cheese. It's like that one dish that your friend's wife makes better than anyone, and always brings to gatherings. This is that dish. Must try! The Po Boy was almost perfect. Bread was incredible- exactly like the kind they use in New Orleans. I wonder if they import in from LA. Fully dressed, you'll get onions, tomato, lettuce, banana peppers, and a side of their special tartar sauce. The shrimp fell flat for me. I mean that literally. I convinced a co-worker to try out Creole Kitchen with me today, since I wanted something new. The place itself is in a pretty questionable area, and I actually passed it twice because there wasn't really much of a sign. It is pretty easy to park once you find the lot though. The lady at the counter was very nice, and I'd give her 5 stars. She was very helpful with our order and was happy to talk with me about a few items on the menu. In the end, I ended up getting a Jerk chicken Po Boy with their homemade chips and a small order of wings. My co-worker got the grilled chicken Po Boy. The sandwiches are pretty big, mainly because the loaf of bread is so huge. Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of my sandwich. The jerk chicken didn't really have much flavor, and the one tomato sliver, banana peppers, and lettuce didn't really add much to it. The bread itself was a little bland to me. I was really hoping for a lot more. My buddy really liked his grilled chicken, and we both had to save the second half for later, because it was so much food. I got the creole wings, and they were actually very tasty. The chicken was cooked perfectly, but they did have a bit of an odd smell on the outside. I think it may have come from the fryer oil, but I'm not quite sure. It went away once we dug into them. We also really liked the chips. They were great, and we had some people at work try them as well, and they really liked them. I'd definitely be willing to give Creole Kitchen a second chance, but I think I'd try one of the more traditional dishes like the etoufee or jambalaya next time. We've had our eye on this spot for a minute, but finally pulled the trigger and it was worth the wait! We got the chicken and shrimp etouffee with rice and beans and grilled cabbage. That was the star of the show: the flavor was just perfect, exactly what creole food should taste like. We had spice level 3 and it was perfect. Dip the grilled cabbage in the etouffee sauce & thank me later! I also has the Jackson Po' Boy and it was pretty good: it came on split-top crusty bread, which made it hard to keep all the toppings together, but you get TWO BOXES WORTH of sandwiches for the price, so I'm not complaining! The remoulade type sauce that comes with the Po' Boy was fantastic though-I would buy a gallon of that stuff! The gumbo had a great amount of spice and had all the gumbo fixins, like Okra. Don't miss the $2 beignets on Fridays and Saturdays. As good as if not better than Cafe Du Monde without needing to make to New Orleans. On a whim, inspired by a recipe I saw online - I posted on FB asking if anyone knew locally where I could get my hands on beignets as I had never had one. A friend in Florida posted a link to Creole Kitchen and when I googled it, well, it was right down the road from work - one more posting and I had a partner in food-venturing. While not in the best part of the King-Lincoln district, it is TOTALLY worth the trip. No signage made us worried we had missed it, but we pulled right in front of the door. The gentleman taking our order was friendly and when I expressed my disappointment about beignets only being served for breakfast (I thought they were a dessert, not breakfast) he hollered to the chef that I came all the way from downtown to try some beignets - the chef hollered back that he could cook some up and how many did I want - 2 orders later, I had my golden brown pillows of heaven. I ordered my lunch of Red Beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage and Piquant Sauce - it arrived hot and ready - DELICIOUS!! The portion was large for me so I have lunch tomorrow and priced at $7.95 for the entree - well, that works for me. The beignets were 4 for $3 which I felt was more than fair. They open at 7a and serve breakfast until 1030a. He advised me to call ahead and they would have my order ready so I could grab it on the way to work. OH YEAH!! My friend ordered the vegetarian Po Boy with a side of red beans and rice and she was equally happy with her dish. We accompanied our lunch with a bottle of JC's Sweet Tea - locally brewed in Columbus, OH - never had it before and I can't wait to have it again. Perfectly complemented the spice of my meal and the sweetness of the beignets. While the dining room is small, we felt right at home and listening to the hustle and bustle of the kitchen was fun. Came here on a Monday afternoon and was welcomed warmly by the staff at the front door. Is this a family? Because they warm my heart. You can tell the place has recently been redone. Great remodel, folks! On to the food: The complimentary creole chips were delicious. We had a beignet and gator bites to start. The beignets were perfect: light and fluffy. The gator bites were done well also (though I don't have a comparison), but not over fried and just what I'd imagine gator to taste like. My friend had an oyster po-boy and felt the oysters could have been cooked a bit more. Overall, unimpressed (taking away a star). On the other hand, I had the chicken and andouille jambalaya which was delicious. Seasoned perfectly, and definitely worth going back for. This place is a gem, and I hope it gets more attention. This place is a hidden gem in Columbus. Chef and his crew are polite and if you've never tried their food they will give you great recommendations on the different food items they serve. I personally love the french toast breakfast with home fries and bacon! But the creole jerk chicken or the poboy are great as well. Checked out menu, so was torn between gumbo and jambalaya to start things off, been a minute since i had gumbo, not on menu as much in most places..so i order a bowl of it for starters. gumbo had that dark brown color, the roux, and base was just right..every bite just enough andouille sausage and rice, celery and onion to satisfy my taste buds...added a couple dashes of hot sauce, c'mon now, have to bring the heat...after devouring the gumbo, which i strongly recommend, I ordered a Poboy, several options on the menu, Shrimp, Oyster, Blackened Chicken, and a seafood Poboy called the Jackson which is catfish, shrimp, chicken and crawfish...I went with the last option called the Toni, the Toni has a fried chicken breast, fried shrimp, crawfish and is topped with a muffuletta salad. Saw a picture on Yelp looked pretty big....So i waited for my sandwich and service was good, Antoinette always checking on me, refilling my drink, the Poboy came out , it was huge, it was literally 2 sandwiches and it was chockfull of ingredients..this isn't a light lunch folks, this is a big boy sandwich(ordered to go tray as soon as it came out for 2nd sandwich)...bit into the sandwich and every bite filled with chicken, shrimp or little bites of crawfish, and that fried flavor is accompanied by a etoufee salad consisting of black olives, tomatoes, celery and a spicy tartar sauce that is very good...sandwich comes with fries or cajun chips..ordered the chips, yummy accompaniment to sandwich...the only set back was the bread, the sandwich wasn't on a typical Poboy french roll/sub bun, think Texas Toast grilled on a flattop surface - still very good...but not the "true" Poboy bread that you often see on the Bayou....highly recommend the sandwich...Love Creole Kitchen, great service, high quality food and down home people who love what they do...get there for a New Orleans style meal, you won't be sorry!! read more

To start with, where else you gonna find gator? As a Cajun transplant, oooweee, I swear this is the real deal. I recommend everything. Just stop by a couple of times, and try a couple of things to familiarize yourself with Creole cuisine, & pick your favorite, if you can. My favorite(s): crawfish etoufee, shrimp etoufee, gumbo, blackened catfish, blackened chicken, and oh, the sides. Just give it a try - you won't find anything like it in these parts. Honestly the best fettuccine I've ever had. My boyfriend and I have been looking for a good spicy fettuccine and this is the perfect one. We've tried a few different levels of heat, and even the lowest heat is a better fettuccine than any high end Italian restaurant, in both of our opinions. If you're looking for spicy, the 4 has been our go to. Beyond the fettuccine, the sides have never failed to disappoint. The portions are generous, the quality outstanding, and the prices are welcoming to anyone and everyone. We've ordered delivery and gone to pick it up and been pleased both ways. I like the place. simple and to the point.. I didn't realize that there was a dining area next to it, so i know to dine in on my next experience. I ordered the Catfish Po' Boy and it came with lettuce, tomato, onion and, peppers that where not spicy and it can with natural hand cut fries which were hot and in and old school wax paper bag, also a side of dirty rice that was more on the vinegar side than i imagined. Now the star was that damn Po Boy. The catfish was cooked to perfection and the sauce that was served was an excellent compliment to this huge tasty sandwich. Great carry out on the Near East Side. The poboys are as good as the best in NOLA. I prefer the carryout to the sit down establishment. Music in sit-down portion can be very loud and the service is spotty. Order ahead so you don't have to spend too much time in the sketchy shopping center with the dope fiends asking you for money. We aren't experts on Creole/Cajun food by any stretch of the imagination, but the food we had was comparable to what I had on a trip to New Orleans. Great menu selections and there were even more options on the black board when we went to pick up our food. I wonder if they would read those off when you call in to make your order? My husband had the seafood jambalaya and I had the shrimp etouffee with dirty rice and cabbage. The food was pretty spicy for anyone who's not really into super spicy things - my husband doesn't like spicy food and got 2/5 and felt it was too much; I like spicy food and got 3/5 and felt that it was a little much as well. Something to consider when choosing your spice level. Our order was ready 10-15 mins after we ordered, as they promised when we placed our order. Wait, I've never reviewed Creole Kitchen? How? How? So, I've been to CK a few times before today. We made a special trip today because we just got back from New Orleans, where we found out that beignets are like crack. Seriously, we are addicted to them. And Creole Kitchen? Has beignets for breakfast. So we went. They were legit as hell. I would have liked a couple of mine to be just sliiightly more fried, and I mean maybe a total of 30 seconds longer. They were puffy, which I like in a beignet--I've had some ones that were more dense, the puffy ones are good. Honest to goodness? I think I might like CK's beignets more than Cafe du Monde's. Yeah, I said it. The coffee isn't bad either, but if you like real dairy product in your coffee, be prepared to be disappointed. Fake creamer only--but the coffee seems to be super cheap and it's definitely drinkable. As far as other food, I've had the "muffuletta" po-boy; let's be real, this is not a muffuletta at all, BUT, it is a delicious Italian sub and I will order it again. Hubs had a burger once that was passable but not delicious (it was cheap, though, so there's that). The house-made chips that come with the sandwiches are tasty. I would like to address the po' boy issue. I don't really feel like you can ding someone for not having the right po' boy bread because you can't get that bread in Columbus without having someone make it special for you (which would drive up the overhead considerably at a place like Creole Kitchen). Po' boy bread isn't nearly as chewy as a baguette, and I honestly think that a softer sub roll is probably a more palatable substitute for this type of sandwich. Because of some food inconsistencies, and because their customer service is not exactly friendly if you're not a regular (although the chef himself is nice; he had us put powdered sugar on our own beignets so we got the right amount--the counter staff is often curt with us, but not *rude* or anything... we did have friendly service when we, erm, went back for lunch this afternoon), I'm only giving CK four stars. HOWEVER, this is definitely a place to hit up if you are in the King-Lincoln district. It's good, cheap, tasty take-out. Definitely superior to the Wendy's down the street. (Also, in a place like this, I think it's much more likely to run out of stuff because they are trying to keep their overhead really low, so they likely err on the side of under-ordering. It's one of those places where you have to be a little more patient to help keep the prices low, y'know? Cos with the seafood on the menu, it could easily be inflated more than it is.) read more

I love this place!! I have a very high tolerance level for spicy foods so unfortunately at many restaurants, when I order "spicy" they give me a dish with hardly any heat to it at all. Here you can order to the heat level of your liking no matter how hot you like your food to be. I always appreciate a restaurant that isn't afraid of some spice and know how to use it correctly. The flavors are bold and different from most things you can get here in Columbus and the portions are so generous that I end up with enough leftover to snack on throughout the rest of my day. There is another creole/cajun type of restaurant on High Street (Da LeVee) but the pieces of seafood and meat that you get there are so tiny that they are practically nonexistent. Not here though- you get large, juicy pieces of delicious seafood in every bite. I also love how the restaurant is so devoid of any pretentiousness. They have made minimal effort to decorate the place. When you wait you can sit on plastic lawn chairs and the paint on the walls are chipping. What keeps a lot of people coming back is the yummy, inexpensive food and generous portions, and it doesn't hurt that the staff is so nice as well! read more

There are no flashing signs and no billboards. There's just a crowd of people and a powerful trail of amazing smells to guide you to the right place in the little strip mall off Mt Vernon Avenue. It seems like a bit of a rough neighborhood from the boarded up houses in the area and the number of stares our presence elicited, but we had no problems and the staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. Everyone around the area seemed to know one another, so we felt a bit like outsiders, but the lady who took our orders treated us like old friends. I don't know what I can say about the food that hasn't been said. I had the crawfish etouffee and it was perfect. The cole slaw is great, the creole rice is great, the dirty rice is great, the po'boys are great. It all smells like heaven and holds to that standard until is safely through your gut. I tried this for the first time today. I had roasted potatoes (SO DELICIOUS) I added salt, pepper and ketchup tho Made my heart melt right on the chair I also had Seafood Jambalaya and added chicken My spice level was 4/5 and it was just right I would recommend this to others and can't wait to go back and try some more ALSO staff was VERY friendly. This place is fire! Easy in and out when you call ahead. Limited seating. I do an etouffee cause I'm all over their crayfish but I'd try about anything they've got. Some dishes are a good $ deal, other dishes are all about that authenticity - and these folks do it up! Probably see me around for breakfast, talk to me - i'm there eating! read more

Jackson Poboy with fried catfish, fried shrimp, and fried crawfish was absolutely horrendous. Oh and instead of lettuce, they put spinach leaves on the sandwich. Also, they put olives on the sandwich. The grease was old and it tasted so. When I called and placed my order the staff member told me my order number. When I arrived, the lady gave me two chef salads and said $16.00. I was like wow, the price is high and they told me $14.95 over the phone. It was not worth a penny. The bread (it was not French as the website states...was soaked in grease.) Someone really needs to come and inspect this place before someone really does get sick.
