We parked in front of the shop, and the smell of freshly baked goods greeted us when we entered. At that moment I knew this place would not disappoint. The counter had pies, turnovers, and cookies on display, but we came with a mission: secure a cider donut. It's so refreshing to see donuts sold at a reasonable price. For $1.35, these were a steal compared to the $6 ones sold in the city. (Yes, $6 for a single!) The donuts, which were still warm when we had them, were generously coated with cinnamon sugar. At the entrance, there were a few rules posted to keep things safe: wear masks, hand sanitizer between stations, maintain 6 ft distance. There were plenty of hand sanitizers available throughout for patrons, and even a couple of hand washing stations set up. We were asked to give our name and number upon entering for contact tracing, and then passed through a second tent that allowed us to use our credit card to buy tokens for use at the market. Traffic flow was set up so that people were generally moving in one direction only, and people did a good job of distancing. Was a nice spot to get some sunshine and help support local business. We added some gourmet crackers that were neutral enough to not overpower the cheese. The next day, we made the three cheeses the focus of our lunch. The Delice de Bourgogne was the star of the show, a creamy, earthy, and savory masterpiece. The two year aged Gouda and creamy blue cheese were delightful as well! I also bought frozen pirogies a few weeks ago and got home (a 5 minute drive) and opened them to find them all clumped frozen together in a huge thing of frost - they clearly had not remained frozen at one point. I know it's probably not easy being a small store in a rural area but sadly I will only be stopping in for last minute pantry items if needed - I won't be buying fresh food anymore - food poisoning is seriously not fun.

Of course, by early November the outdoor market has moved indoors and we have little idea what the waterfront outdoor market looks like, but I've gotta say I'm impressed. I'm impressed with the organisation of the so many vendors in different corners of the two-floor space, and the variety and quality of the goodies available. Pretty much all cooked foods were upstairs with tables and chairs dotted amongst vendors, and the offerings ranged from West African and Caribbean American to dumplings, crepes, and empanadas. There was a "makers" room with clothing, jewlery, pottery, and other knickknacks, and produce, Belgian sugar waffles, and dried flower arrangements lined the middle section of the ground level. Probably the biggest room was in the back corner across from the 'booze' section, and this is where we see the dairy, dips, honey, peanut butter, gourds, pickles, and lots of baked goods, some of which we couldn't resist. We ended up with a small haul from Golden Blend Bakehouse, Our Daily Bread, and The Placid Baker. I'm be sure to follow up on how the baked goods go but the farmers market was impressive and I'm glad this has become a real landmark in the Capital Region. Parking is available among the street (mostly metred) and near the waterfront. We'll be back.
