I like the quote that said the coincidence is better than a thousand plan. This is what happened with finding Criterion Coffee. We were passing by the coffee shop. I followed my instinct and we came back to try it. The decor is impressive. It felt very cozy, relaxing and modern. They have two levels, I didn't have the chance to go upstairs. For the Criterion drink menu; they have nice coffee variety, tea, Ice tea, lemonades, Smoothies and milk shakes. They also have delicious savory toast options, salads, and breakfast favorite menu. We got the following drinks; -Pumpkin spice Latte (Almond Milk) 5/5 -Banana Date Latte (Oat Milk) 5/5 The Pumpkin spice Latte was excellent with perfect sweetness. The Banana Date Latte was unique. It had perfect balance between banana and date. I tasted both in every sip, in addition to enjoying little pieces of both too. It's a must try drink. Beside the drinks, we got two toasts; Prosciutto Toast 5/5 Toasted Multigrain bread with several layers of Prosciutto, arugula, roasted tomato, sundried tomatoes and pesto sauce. The Best Prosciutto Toast as my daughter described it. Hummus Toast (vegan) 5/5 I chose toasted olive bread, with organic Hummus, topped with red roasted pepper, and arugula. It came with strawberry on the side. The Hummus was very tasty and creamy. I wish I could have more. I ate too slowly to enjoy every flavorful bite. Then we ordered more baked goods too. -Banana walnuts Bread 5/5 We got Pumpkin Nutella, Date Ginger Matcha, and Cranberry orange scone to go. I was postponing my review until I tried everything. Pumpkin Nutella 5/5 Date Ginger Matcha 5/5 Cranberry Orange Scone 5/5 All the baked goods were outstanding and very delicious with perfect texture and well balanced taste. The service was top notch! The coffee shop was very clean. I am so impressed with Criterion Coffee. It is really a hidden gem in Pasadena. It is one of my top favorite coffee shop that I have tried so far and I anticipate that I will become a regular customer. read more

What a lovely place to visit! I came here one morning a couple months ago and loved how open the space was. They played some good music as well to ease me into the day. I got the Rose Latte and thought it tasted amazing. The staff was really kind and brought my drink up to the second floor when they saw that I was busy working rather than just leaving it at the bar for me to walk downstairs and grab it's kind gestures like these that make the difference in the atmosphere of a cafe and I highly recommend this one! read more

Love the music and ambiance, the food and drinks are good too! The food can be a little pricey but I think it's worth the amount they serve you. Very cozy cafe, friendly staff, and nice ambiance. Can be a nice little spot to study, or even just a cute spot to come with a friend or partner for a coffee and a small bite. My personal favorite to have ordered had to be the Salmon toast, as a savory taste type of girl, it was so good! As for their coffees, very unique menu to choose from, and very nice tastes. I already liked Criterion, and now that I found out it's one free in-house refill (on the drip), it's become my favorite coffee spot in Pasadena! I get the drip and Americano, and they're both strong but not bitter. Pastries are excellent, and there's always been an open seat for my writing and reading. And a friendly staff. I came in a Sunday morning to meet up with a friend for brunch. The place was lively and packed, but we were able to secure a table pretty quickly. You just place your order at the counter and then wait for an open seat. They have a huge menu selection, and lots of pastries good to choose from. The food was a bit pricey, but it was really good, and the portion was pretty generous. I ordered a flat white coffee, and the coffee was just okay. I also ordered the Criterion breakfast board, and that was a huge spread. My friend ordered a prosciutto toast, and that looked amazing too. Also, I'm not sure about the schedule, but around 1 pm, someone came in to play live music. I would definitely go back to try more things. read more

What a wonderful hidden gem that I discovered on this mini trip to Pasadena. The cappuccino was really good, love the foam & beautiful design on my drink. #145 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. Criterion Coffee has a stunning elegant interior, adorned with beautiful modern brass constellation chandeliers, glossy emerald deco tiles along the counter, brick walls on one side, and a glossy white tiled wall on the other for an incredible contrast. Further highlighting the attention to detail in the design are the 3D ceiling tiles that function to provide added depth and insulation while also augmenting the shop's classy look. What I loved most though was how they created an upstairs lounge with additional seating. I'm not sure where the space came from, since it wasn't there when the location used to be Home Brewed (a different coffeeshop), but I'm definitely loving the add-on! As for the coffee, I tried their rose vanilla latte and a vanilla charcoal latte. Both drinks were well crafted with smooth espresso and subtle flavoring from the monin syrups (my favorite brand of coffee syrups). They go light on the syrup though, so a few times I've asked for an extra pump for a more prominent flavor. They also serve an assortment of artisanal baked goods from Bread Lounge - score! Service was friendly as well. All in all, I recommend stopping by Criterion Coffee if you're in the area. You won't regret it. ****************** My Ratings: 1 Star: Terrible; just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars: Wasn't a fan so Not likely to return. 3 Stars: Meh. Average. Drip coffee was mediocre and extremely pricey. Barista was nice enough. I guess if I had time to kill and the shop seems cozy. Can't speak for any food items, since I'm usually at a coffee shop just for coffee. Some of the pastries looked pretty good though. Tough to recommend in Old Town specifically for coffee where there are so many other options. read more

Food was okay (a bit overpriced imo) & it was $4 to add one extra shot to my drink. Though that is an average price, most cafes have a cheaper option when you add it in addition to your drink (which was a bit too milky). Way too expensive, and wouldn't necessarily go back because of this reason. read more

Love this spot. Criterion Coffee has quickly become one of my go-to places in Pasadena. The vibes are super chill -- minimalist design, lots of natural light, and somehow it's always quiet, even when it's busy. Great spot to get work done, read, or just zone out with a good pour-over. I've posted up here with my laptop for a few hours and also met friends for a catch-up -- it works for both. Spacious seating, not cramped like a lot of other coffee shops, and the layout makes it easy to either focus or socialize without feeling like you're in the way. The coffee's legit. Clean, smooth, and you can tell they care about what they're doing. I usually get a cortado or drip and both have been solid every time. If you're looking for a low-key place to work, meet up, or just escape the usual coffee shop chaos, Criterion's got you. Bonus points for being in a quiet corner of Pasadena with decent parking. $10 parking all day lot next door read more

I believe they might be the OG). Matcha latte (they make theirs unsweetened, and for purists, this is perfect!) I need to talk about their Ube foam here. You can add it to any drink (I like topping my pandan lattes with it--it's a perfect flavor blend!) It is decadent, sweet, and creamy, and yes, makes your drink a dessert! While other shops also make Ube cream tops, Dash's Ube foam is the best one by a large margin when it comes to taste and texture. The shop space is cozy and clean, with indoor and outdoor seating. There is customer turnover, but sometimes it's not fast, so a few times, I've had to take my drinks to go even though I had planned to stay a while if seating allowed--obviously others enjoy the vibe here as well!
