UPDATE: It gets worse and weird. I am thus reducing my three stars to one star. After I told them our issue was resolved, they sent a guy out to pick up the remaining traps and clean up. He spent 5 minutes with a shop vac (contractually, they were supposed to "disinfect and sanitize"). Then, I received a "Grand Total" bill for the final amount, which I paid. I was very glad to be completely done with them. THEN, they sent a tech out to my house without telling me! Apparently he baited some traps he put outdoors. I didn't see him come. He didn't call me, he didn't text me, nor did he knock on my door--he just snuck around my property, apparently. Then, they sent me an invoice for that. Super creepy. I called the 800 number, after a lengthy wait, I talked to an unsympathetic secretary with little knowledge. She said they would call me back, but have not. I also sent an email in response to the bill, but have received no response from that, either. I'm pretty frustrated. They have *major* billing issues. They seem to be mostly focused on extracting as much money as they can, with the least effort. Original Review: Contracting: They completed a digital contract at my door ($2K) after a brief explanation. I paid 75% up front. What they didn't mention is that there are also monthly fees of $79 for showing up and doing the job they promised. *Don't trust what they tell you, but actually read the contract and ask questions.* Don't sign a digital contract, but ask for it on paper, if you decide to use this service. They did do the exclusion work, but we did most of the rest of it ourselves. If we ever have this problem again, I would hire a handyman to do the exclusion work and put out traps ourselves. The service was completely and totally not worth what we paid. Disorganization: They were very disorganized. They made appointments without notice--a guy would call me randomly to say he was on his way, and then they would ignore us for 2 weeks or more. There was one competent tech (Chris) but most often someone new would show up with little background on what had been happening. Ultimately our issue was resolved, but it was far from smooth...and expensive, and like I said, we did most of it ourselves. read more

Horrible service. Id give it zero stars if I could. Today the technician entered the property we could see it on our cameras. He was on the property for a total of three minutes where he claims to have done a thorough ant treatment. Ive called multiple times to cancel the service. Each time the person answering the phone says they have no authority to cancel. We have reviewed our cameras everytime they claim to have come and several times there was no photo evidence of them entering the property. We have 9 cameras. Today the technician said he had no authority to cancel the service. He said "Good Luck lol". read more

No one employed in the company currently has a wco permit, which you need to legally be able to handle wildlife outside of the basics. They're horrible about getting back to you through email or phone calls regarding issues or scheduling with their company. They have a lack of professionalism and respect for other people's property. Rather than pull a ladder off of their truck the technician chose to use a customer's ladder and extension cord without even asking. read more

I must update my review of a few days ago. The billing was delayed from last month and made the period between services appear to be only two weeks but it was closer to three for monthly service. It was handled well by the customer service person when I finally called the correct number. What that rep did not know was that the previous operation/incarnation of Critter Control had left a website that was not only obsolete, but had been hijacked by scammers who used it to lure callers to give over personal information for 'a gift certificate'. The agent said she would report to IT. I was at a loss to find an active phone number for the company, so I drove across town to the purported address of the office, which was now occupied by an entirely new business. The neighbor said they had sold the business some years ago, but had no real leads. Kudos for customer service for reaching out after my prior review. I was so frustrated I wanted to quit them, but not because of their acumen, rather because of their billing practices. It's still not optimal, but now I am not feeling cheated. (I had previously been double billed, but called to have that reversed some year or two ago.) read more

Just now reading these reviews, so glad I have not moved ahead with this company because my story starts just like theirs! Horrible customer service. The only communication I've got back was a bid for $3500 - but even this took weeks and multiple phone calls. I have some questions about the bid, so I call, email and text the tech, Alex who came out. NO response for weeks. I call the 800 number but get nowhere either. I'm a renter and having to deal with skunks under my building. My unit (one in a four-unit building) is the only one with crawl space access. I wish I could say I've found the service satisfactory, but that would be a lie, as both their service and thier communications have been entirely bad. The first group to show up confirmed the skunk and kits but then didn't trap them properly, refusing to put in a one-way door or cage in the right location. After weeks, the skunks simply moved to the left to dig a new hole beneath the house and I'm sure the company charged the landlord full price for not completing the job. Several months later, we're now in August. They have scheduled to come in and clean out the crawl space, but a new team discovers the new hole and that there is now another creature living under the house. They actually install the one-way door at the hole and say they'll be back next week. Which they schedule. For today. I move my entire day around to worn out a time with them and they are a complete no call/no show. This is the worst part. The communication is absolutely horrible from everyone. Nobody answers the phone after they get you signed, they don't respond to texts unless they initiate it, and they just generally do not respect anyone's time but their own. I'm fine with needing to move things around, but if you don't contact the customer or people who are giving you access, you are deliberately not completing the work in a correct and timely manner, ultimately exacerbating the problem and prolonging the contract. I'll be advising my landlord to switch to a different pest control,because as much as I don't care if he wastes his money on a bad company, I do care that it's affecting my time and space. I paid ~ $2000 for an exclusion that was supposed to prevent rodents from returning. It is now just over a year since that service was completed and they're back. And apparently there's no warranty on the fact that this happened even though it was supposed to be a two-year warranty. It appears that when they were bought out last year, they have lost all record of this. All of the previous staff that used to work there seem to be gone, and there's no way to contact them Via their old phone numbers. This new company that owns them has turned a cool local company that was great into an overpriced waste of money. Avoid! read more

I have never been more disappointed in service and outcomes as I have been by Critter Control. We received a bid for work (and paid in full as that was the only option) back in October. To date, only a third of the work has been completed and because of the lack of follow through and execution of the process as outlined in the contract, our home is now in worse shape than it was. To further put a knife in the wound, the current District Manager has now quit because of the lack of corporate support and ability to make things happen. We have called the 1.800number so many times with a response of someone will be in touch that it is laughable. we are now $3k out of money and no path forward other than small claims court. DO NOT use this service. The company was local and bought a couple of years ago so the other reviews you see are from then. Please take your business elsewhere and provide us moral support we will get our money back. read more

Terrible communicators. All I wanted was an estimate to have under our house closed up and inspected. Twice the guy straight up didn't show for an appointment, didn't bother to call to let us know he wasn't coming. The other two times he never gave us an estimate and then proceeded to just close up parts of our crawlspace without telling us resulting in our stray getting stuck down there which was a fun find on my lunch break. I would not recommend this company. Wasted an entire month trying to get this problem resolved only to be back at square one. read more

I called them for what I though was a raccoon issue, and when they got here they did what I did the day before which was looking for an entry point from the raccoon. Turns out no raccoon in my attic but in my roof trying to find a warm place to have their babies. So there Technician who was a nice fella looked around the exterior of my house for about 10 min and came the conclusion that there was no entry but asked me if I wanted them to kea extra is for $289 and additional $50-$150 if they catch anything. I opted not to leave trains since my conclusion was the raccoon/critter was only in the roof and was not successful. The ended up charging me $169 for an indirection Fee. I ended up calling a couple other places where they give an estimate first with no inspection fee. Still waiting fir my receipt which I haven't got. So please beware if these crooks. Straight Bull$hit. Save your money and go somewhere else. This company is super shady. read more

We live in a boreal rain forest, Portlanders. As such, raccoons, nutria, skunk, and rodents abound. The folks a Critter Control have been patient, prepared and prompt when evicting mama raccoon from the premises. Scheduling was simple and clear. We were able to get the work started after looking at payment options with a simple and reasonable down payment. Alas, Mama raccoon got busy with the insulation! Their practices are humane, and the state and city regulations they must work within were made clear. What I appreciated most was that they'd give me an arrival time (not a window) and call fifteen minutes before knocking on my door, even if they were 5-10 mins. off. If our abundant wildlife becomes a nuisance. Critter Control is a good local business to call. read more

I contacted Gritter Control to come to check on a rat problem in our home. The person. who came out, Cody, did an inspection and quoted a whopping $3.2k. I tried to contact Cody on three different occasions within a week period to ask a simple question about the contract. He never returned my calls. For someone to quote such a high amount and then totally ignore the client is perplexing to say the least but speaks volumes to me on customer service. My final message said I would not go forward since I could not get a call back. They were very quick to come out though with that high quote. I believe the guy knew I saw through him on that price. I am SO glad I did not use this company. I have read other reviews that were one star as well for them as they appear not to care about the customers at all. And, for the record the rat problem is new and not an infestation at all. read more

I think that if Critter Control was smart they should disable the email they send customers asking for reviews of their service. From my experience it doesn't seem that Customer Service is a priority for this company so it doesn't make sense to seek reviews. I was preparing my house to put it on the market when I noticed a dead animal smell coming from the basement crawl space. I had interior painting scheduled and after that would be completed, my house was going on the market. I didn't want the painters to have to inhale the smell of a dead rat and obviously wanted the issue resolved prior to the home being listed so I reached out to Critter Control to ask for a bid. They met me and provided a bid for removal, clean up and to ensure that the area where the rat entered was fixed so that this didn't happen again. I communicated the timeframe that this needed to be complete and was promised that they could meet that timeline. I made a 50% deposit for the services at that time and was told that someone would call me to schedule the service. The service would take several hours to complete. I was never contacted to schedule the service so I called 3x times before my call was returned. When the call was returned by the owner, or manager, I was told that the work could not be done until a date that was a week after my scheduled Open House. I explained the timeline and was told when the bid was provided that it would be done prior to that date, and that I paid for half of the service at that time. I also shared the smell of the rodent that was in the house and that there were people working in the house that had to deal with that. He said the soonest someone could come out was the 9th, which would be 2 days before my Open House. He apologized for not contacting me sooner and said that he would have someone come out in the next couple of days to remove the carcas and put some odor control in the space until they could get there on the 9th. Someone was supposed to call me to schedule the removal of the carcas. Later that afternoon I received a call from the office and was told that she did not know why he promised that someone could come out and do that, there was nobody who could come out sooner than the 9th. Finally the service was complete on Wednesday, April 9th. Honestly, I would have moved on and forgotten about the rest of the experience rather than take the time to leave a review but then late Friday I get a frantic call from my realtors that there were flies all over my house that escaped from the crawl space. When I contacted Critter Control and spoke with the individuals who completed the service, I was told that wasn't part of the clean up process to ensure that there weren't maggots left to hatch into flies. I find that hard to believe considering the scope of the work that I hired them to do, and the price of the service. He also asked me if there happened to be another dead rodent in there, which I would have expected they would have found given the fact that they spent several hours in there cleaning it up. That is what I hired them to do. Since they were no help I left messages for the office asking what to do about the flies and received a text promising a call from the owner or manager within 45 minutes. That call never came. I spent the evening killing flies until 11pm with my very small children so that my house would be ready for an Open House the next morning. Lastly, they sent me an invoice for the full service which did not reflect the deposit I made. To summarize, I can't think of one aspect of this experience that met expectations. The only individual that seems to have any honesty or integrity is the woman who called me to tell me that they couldn't come out sooner than the 9th and she didn't know why I was promised otherwise. I suspect that she has to deal with a lot of angry customers who are made promises that can't be delivered upon. I don't envy her that. read more

I have been trying to get my home serviced due to some curious squirrels and field mice for two months. They were quick to come out and do the estimate but, I had nothing but trouble from that point forward. Every time you call or email you get absolutely nowhere. Also, their email and phone systems are not user-friendly; they have all kinds of different email addresses that they use and expect you to respond only to the obscure emails because they will not answer your question or help you over the phone. I would not recommend them, they are very difficult to deal with and everyone I spoke to pass the buck on to somebody else as the problem and said their hands are tied, all I asked for was to give them money and to kill the mice seemed pretty simple to me. read more

I have worked with this company off and on for several years and they have always been great. In the past year something has gone really really wrong with their billing department. I was charged for an exclusion service, and paid the full amount. A month later I received a bill for the amount again - $1700 dollars. I replied back that the bill had already been paid. I never heard back from them and received another bill one month later. At that point I called the company and the representative told me that I had paid but there was another charge on the account for the same amount (which was clearly an error). At that time she also told me I had a recurring charge of $534 every two months for bait stations. I have NEVER paid so much for the bait stations, not did I sign anything stating I would pay so much. I told them I had already paid for the exclusion, and that I wanted to cancel all services as I had only every paid $89 for the bait stations and I don't trust the company. The next week while I was working another workman came to service the bait stations and I just got a bill for $534 for a service I never asked for or agreed to, which I did ask to be cancelled last week. I can't believe how incredibly messed up this company has become. I used to recommend them everywhere! By the way, when you call to try to resolve billing issues, you will be on hold for half an hour at least, and they don't seem to read or respond to any emails. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE - DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!! read more

CAUTION! DO NOT SIGN (electronically) the initial contract offered without negotiating it. It contains the maximum charges for the maximum number of possible problems. If Critter Control finds that you only need to have some screens tacked down, as we did, they still charge their maximum for the simple handyman work. For us that was almost $600! So, once they have your signature--it's too late to negotiate. read more

I caught a skunk on accident (knew about the possum, didn't know about a skunk). I called two other places, one didn't return my call and the other had a tech go home sick. So I called critter control and they came out within a couple of hours and removed my problem. I'm grateful that they were able to come out so quickly. read more

It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it, and they do it well. I appreciate the email updates and the before and after pictures. I also like that they scheduled repair times directly with the tenants. We had a rat situation probably because of tenants feeding the birds and birdseed getting all over the porch. It's expensive, but I feel like after all we have done they will not be coming back. Fingers crossed! read more

Mathew worked hard to catch our squirrels and when they discovered that they could not fully complete the contract do to the structure of our home they promptly discounted the job without my having to argue the point. We had some birds find a hole in an eave and settle into our attic a couple weeks ago. I called on a Wednesday and Jacob was able to come over the very next day. He did a thorough sweep of the house and attic, made sure there wasn't a nest or signs of other rodents that sometimes follow birds (gross), and then patched up the hole in our roof. Pricing was fair but maybe a little more than we expected, but well worth the peace of mind to have experts check thing outs and inspect the whole house. read more

I hired Critter Control in July 2019 to trap squirrels in my attic, spray a disinfectant on their droppings, trap skunks in the crawlspace and install new vapor barrier to replace the old one which had animal droppings on it. They gladly took my $500, 1/3 down payment, and didn't show up. I called several times to be told they would come 'in a few days'. After one month a guy came and put one trap on my roof. They came once a week to check the trap but after 2 months no squirrels, or any other animal, was trapped. Critter Control never attempted any of the other work I contracted them to do. I called the office several times to try to discover their plan to complete the work and got no answer. BTW, if you read the fine print in their contract, which is never discussed or even mentioned, you will discover that they charge you $89/month, in perpetuity, to place rodent traps around your house. I don't have rodents and when I discovered this part of the contract I called the office to have these traps removed. The woman I spoke to on the phone talked in circles for 10 minutes trying to dissuade me from canceling the rodent trapping. I won this round but what a hassle! 6 months after I signed the contract with Critter Control I received a letter apologizing to all their customers for their failure to provide the services they contracted for. The letter offered that they would either complete the work or a refund would be given. I chose the refund. Today I received a check from the company for $1. Yes, one dollar. No explanation given. I would not recommend this company to anyone. They are rude, disorganized and they will take your money without providing service. read more

Had ants for a few months in the house, they came and sprayed and did the indoor treatment. Haven't seen any ants since they came. They were incredibly professional, kind and knowledgeable. Patient and would explain. Also they did NOT pressure us to get on their monthly plan which is something I've never experienced. They only mentioned it because I asked about it. I had a skunk living under my shed, that was constantly spraying. After it sprayed my dog, I decided to contact Critter Control to have it professionally removed. Critter Control was the only flat-rate animal removal option; other estimates had a per animal removal fee. I was unsure of how many skunks may be living under my shed, and had also recently seen a opossum and raccoon. This worked out to be the best option because they caught TWO skunks and TWO opossums! Critter Control was fantastic throughout every step of the process! Mike provided a free consultation that included animal removal information and necessary repairs to the shed. The communication of monitoring and animal capture was excellent - I really appreciated the daily email report updates, with before and afters pictures included of the progress. read more

This service was a waste of my money as they came and set traps that didn't catch anything and told me the critters were gone as a result. Considering that I had several moles tearing up my newly landscaped backyard, this was an awesome experience. Tim came out and figured out right away what was happening; Jaden came for the next four weeks, and the Critter Control team caught two moles. We waited two more weeks, no more activity -- problem solved by this great team. The business has been short staffed during the pandemic, so getting reliable dates and job completion were harder than in normal times, I assume. However, Bill personally came out to the job site to go over the project with me, recognized the difficulties that had occurred and not only followed the progress of the project, he also kept in good communication with me and compensated me by doing a bit more on the job than he had to. Having difficulties is never planned, but making up for them with good follow up assured me that they can and did very good work. read more

DO NOT USE.......What a racket.......Very expensive.......they spent a half hour talking, and a half hour actual physical work, which entailed putting a trap on roof with 6 screws, and then removing it.......putting the ladder up took longer than the actual work on the roof.....this cost 650.00......Do yourself a favor, buy a 50.00 trap in home depot, and have someone you know remove it.......For 650.00, I could hire a contractor for a whole day....Never again....It is a company that takes advantage of your situation, and then exploits it. read more

We were referred to critter control by another pest control company. They were prompt and unfortunately didn't have any luck catching the raccoons, we had to have our crawl space cleaned out to complete the job. This was pretty easy since the space was covered with sheet plastic and was simply rolled up and removed. What they did could be done by buying or renting your own live traps the issue is disposal of the vermin. The clean up, for what we paid is a rip off. Just be aware the service works and if you don't mind paying twice the value they're probably as good as any other option in Portland. read more

Owner Tim and Field Service staffer Jesse spent three hours removing the droppings of pigeons which had selected the porch of my luxury condo for roosting and nesting. Tim and Jesse came fully equipped and took every precaution to avoid tracking my carpet and to avoid disturbing my neighbors. They were extremely conscientious and their price was decidedly fair. Employ PCC without hesitation for pigeon removal and cleanup. PS - You could do the cleanup yourself, but pigeon droppings carry numerous diseases. Better to let a professional do it. read more

Overall I had a positive experience working with critter control. However, I couldn't give five stars because of some lack of communication along the way plus a rude employee. I had a squirrel in my wall and my pest company recommended critter control. I was able to get an appointment quick. When I called to make the appointment I stressed to the woman on the phone that whoever came out would need an extra tall ladder, this was not communicated to the worker who showed up to my house without a tall ladder to get up high. During the initial consult I told the worker we were having exterior work done on the house and he commented that would not be a problem. Along the way it was a problem as after we caught the squirrel I was told all entry points would be sealed at the next visit to our house. It was unclear what had been done so I called the office and was informed by a woman, her name may have been Heather, in a rude way that the job could not be completed because they needed the house clear of workers which was never communicated. Were they even going to call me to let me know the work wasn't actually finished? This woman was not kind on the phone as I stressed the importance of this being completed. A really helpful employee named Bill was kind enough to email me explaining what was left to do and some details. Once the guys came out yesterday to complete the job everything was smooth. There was some lack of communication plus a rude employee along the way but I would still use critter control again despite those issues. read more

I am not happy. This process has been full of poor performance and lack of communications throughout. The job was to get rid of the squirrel that had made a nest in our attic crawl space. The first technician didn't even go up in the attic over to the nest area, just looked from the garage trapdoor, which does not give you any view of the chimney, which is where the nest was. He put a trap on the roof, which after several weeks had caught nothing. When I removed the trap because I had to go out of town for a week and couldn't do the required daily check, I discovered he'd nailed it to the brand new shingles and so now I have to have the holes patched in our new roof. Then the CC office called to arrange stage 2, sealing the house. I said I'd been told that first the squirrels would be trapped, but none had been. So a second technician came out and this time went up in the attic, scared away the squirrel, cleaned up the nest, temporarily blocked the entry points, and set new traps on the ground by the chimney. I thought, great, now we'll get somewhere. After several days there still were no squirrels in the traps, although something had activated them. Mice, maybe, or something jumping on the tops of the traps, I don't know. The technician came out and put down a less sensitive trap. Then, with no warning, while I was at work, the next day a team came out and sealed the house. It's an excellent job of sealing, but no one went up in the crawl space to confirm the squirrel was gone. And sure enough, last night I heard the pitter patter of little feet above the ceiling. So now I have to figure out how to remove the trapped squirrel. I've opened the trapdoor to the garage in the hopes it will jump down, but it looks like I'll have to buy a trap of my own and put it in the attic. Not a satisfied customer. read more

I had them out to my house today, again, for a new problem with a mole- they are honest and super fair with their rates. Its upsetting when you have to give a one star review. And if I could I would give negative stars. I had critter control out to remove a squirrel from my attic. To make a long story short these folks don't show up on time. Or they would just come unannounced. When they did show up they didn't have the courtesy to knock or call to let me know they were at my place. They lied multiple times saying they did call when they didn't. Heather and Jessica who answer the phones at their office are both rude and offered no apology or even attempted to try and make things right after I had taken time off work twice in one week for them to come out and enter my home to get to the attic. And last but not least they leave equipment (extension cord) and their trash (wire mesh) in your yard. Needless to say I've never dealt with such horrible customer service and they should be ashamed to even call themselves a company. Don't use them! read more
