Would have been okay if the food was hot. I should have returned it. I was that hungry. Why is gyro meat sitting in a pan that long ??

Came on a Sat afternoon around 1 pm. We just missed the lunch crowd, so there were just a few open tables. There was no host stand, but after standing near the counter for about two minutes, the staff behind the counter told us to have a seat anywhere. We were given our waters right away, but had to ask for menus after a few minutes. There was only one server and one bus boy for the fairly large space. We had to find the server to place our orders and get the check. We ordered the fried shrimp app, a gyro plate with greek fries and extra pitas. Everything was seasoned nicely and tasted great. We'll be making return trips to get our Greek food fix. read more

I love the food here! I have been coming since I was a child. I ordered some food tonight and sat to wait for it. Customer after customer came and picked up their food and each time she offered them a free dessert. My food was ready and just like last time I was here I was not offered a free dessert. Pretty rude to treat your customers differently right in front of them. read more

Fabulous location for Greek food. They gave us a carafe of ice water with a lemon. Service was very friendly and polite. What really won me over was the Greek lemon fries - just perfectly seasoned with a slight tang of flavor. Their gyros dinner was huge and very well-portioned for only $8 - I stuffed myself full on that. They have take-out available which is something that I'll have to check out next time I stop by. The atmosphere is nicely set up and the food was delish and quick/friendly service! Stopped by last Sunday because my craving for a gyro was killing me! Literally I have been dreaming about gyros dancing in my dreams so I figured I needed to do something about it. I have passed by this place plenty of times because it's near one of my favorite pet stores in Evanston. I wanted to show some local business love. I ordered the gyro plate and when I got home I was a little bit suprised by my order. First off, for 13 bucks you get a lot! You get a ton of gyro meat which is a plus. However, I was going to call them and say, hey you guys forgot my fries (because you get a choice of fries or rice with the plate). The fries were actually under the gyro meat and they were covered in this vinegar sauce. I was not a fan of that because it is super sour, and I am actually allergic to vinegar. I coudn't enjoy the fries, but no big deal. The gyro meat was ok. I felt it was over salted and kind of too hard. Maybe I just got a bad batch of food that night. Overall, customer service when ordering was good. I would come back and just try something else. still glad I supported a local business because they need us more than ever. :) read more

This business is CASH ONLY so visit your local ATM before visiting this establishment. Even though the cash only part creates some inconvenience, this place is totally worth it. For an affordable price, you can get your piece of juicy chicken with some fat yummy fries. I remember I was blown away by how juicy and flavorful my piece of chicken was. Their fries are also thicker than my fingers - perfectly crispy on the outside and soft inside. I wish this location is closer to the Northwestern campus so I can visit more often. Cash only This is my favorite place for Greek food. Service is fast and food comes faster. Their gyros and skirt steak are amazing, I like to get them on salads. They do potato wedges instead of French fries. Make sure to get the egg lemon soup as an appetizer. Much like anywhere else, dine in instead of getting it to go. read more

I just got back from lunch there with my brother and parents. My brother's friend suggested it, and it's quite good. The Greek fries are fantastic, but I would prefer if they weren't completely soaked in the lemon vinegar - the ones on the top of the pile that weren't as soaked were delicious. I had a souvlaki chicken pita, which was good (the chicken wasn't fantastic, but I htink it's a personal preference thing). My mom and brother both had the souvlaki dinner, and my mom loved the chicken. My dad had a gyros, and it was massively large (he got the "Giant" option). My brother also had a greek salad, which looked fantastic and he enjoyed. Overall, definitely good, pretty cheap, worth going back. It's a little out of my usual dining radius because it's not really within walking distance of campus, but having a car or when going with someone who does, it's a good choice. Cash only. read more

Fries done right! Got the fries with the Greek lemon juice and spices. Hot, citric and the 1/2 order is just a bit much for 1 but not quite enough for 2. Had the gyro and the meat was a bit crispy but still delicious. Once again, ridiculously huge portion. When I crave for Greek food next time, I'll be back. My memories of Cross-Rhodes folds into my memories of gradschool like butter on warm toast. The friendly diner serves up several nice dishes. Let me give you the low down: The Greek Villager Salad - a real greek salad (read: no lettuce) of cucumbers, tomatoes, and feta. The Gyros are delicious as you would hope. But for me, the Charburger with Feta is the thing that cannot be beat (a fat burger patty, a thick slab of feta, between a bun and served with crispy fries drizzled with a Greek olive-oil and herb based dressing). Now, pay attention, I would leave NU and call ahead my order while I stood at the Noyes platform. By the time I got off the L at Main and walked to Cross-Rhodes it was ready for pickup. I would describe Cross Rhodes as more of a diner than a restaurant. With a different menu it would be a typical greasy spoon breakfast place. The food is conventional Greek fare. I had the Gyro dinner, which was a large mound of sliced lamb served over vinegar fries with sliced tomato, onions, greek yogurt and a pita. Quite tasty. The hummus appetizer was also fine, lemony, and fairly thin in consistency, with pita for dipping. Service was fast and friendly, and I was greeted by the staff upon arriving and departing. The place was busy, and I think it is this friendly atmosphere as much as anything that accounts for it. No credit cards and no alcohol. read more

I love this place, The Greek Chicken in Greek Town is not as good as what you get here, and it is also at least 4-5 bucks cheaper. The French Fries in the lemon/wine sauce with the chicken are also something to tell all your friends about. The Gyros are top notch, the Skirt Steak is also good. I had a cup of the lemon rice soup, it was steaming hot, and full of flavor. Cheap eats, over the top good. For dessert, they offer carrot cake and baklava. Great, authentic Greek food and outstanding service! My wife and I recently went to Greece for our honeymoon and we have been craving Greek food ever since we got back. Normally we'd make a trip to Greek Town but we decided to check out Cross Rhodes. After living in Evanston for a few years I'm kicking myself for not trying this place out sooner. The only place to eat a gyro!!! Cash only but worth it!! They will adjust to you. I like mine well done meaning finished in the oven until it gets crisp on 1 side of the meat wit tziki sauce. The specialty are the Greek fries! Sereved in a lemon tangy dressing. Relax it's light and clear so not like putting salad dressing on fries. Actually seasoning them!! To put it in perspective I was talking to a friend there who said " this reminds me of the Athenian Room." Just then the then waitress now owner walks up and says " because my uncle owns that place." My teenage son met with a group of friends at Cross-Rhodes yesterday. He wouldn't be staying long as we had dinner plans, so he ordered a lemonade. The server proceeded to question him, in front of everyone, if he was just ordering a lemonade because he had no money. Everyone at the table sat in disbelief at what they had just heard. Hands down our favorite restaurant in Evanston, we were going on a weekly basis pre-quarantine and it was the first place we ordered from when we decided to start ordering food again. Their greek chicken with the greek fries is a must have every time we go. I was also a big believer that gyros taste the same almost anywhere you go, because they all use the same supplier. Some how CR's are a notch above. Service is great, everyone is so friendly, we love the neighborhood feel where they treat everyone like family and have been welcoming us since day 1 and the prices are hard to beat. Now that social distancing measures are in place, they have put up plexiglass barricades and have taken the appropriate measures. I don't know about the rest of the menu, because we can't force ourselves to deviate from the gyro or chicken, but their lemon rice soup is also a can't miss. read more

A south Evanston institution! I grew up two blocks away and ate here a lot growing up. I bring my family here all the time and they love it as much as I did. There are so many great things on the menu here. The burgers, the gyros, chicken sandwiches and those awesome Greek fries! I cannot recall ever having anything that I didn't throughly enjoy. I didn't frequent the place myself, I am writing this because my mother (who is 84) and her friend (who is also elderly) went here for lunch. I do not like how they were treated. My understanding is that the food is pretty mediocre, at least what they had but they were kind enough to help up one of the ladies when she fell down coming in. Apparently they only accept cash which they were never told until the end. There is a sign on the inside of the door which you would clearly see when LEAVING. Regardless of all that, a gentleman overheard that these ladies only had credit cards and offered to pay their bill. The owner REFUSED to let this man pay for them and forced the ladies to go to the atm (which of course has a service fee) to get cash. I mean... who is this lady? That sounds so rude of her to do. I personally would give this place one star but my mom is kinder than me and said to give them three. So there you go. It saddens me to see people treat our elderly this way. read more

I went there for lunch. It's cash-only business, and it is definitely worth the trouble to carry cash to enjoy some great food. Gyros and Greek fries delicious. My significant other enjoyed his chicken souvlaki. My reason for not giving at least 4 Stars was for less than friendly service. My guy is hearing impaired and we found our server to be impressed impatient and unfriendly. Although I am not hearing impaired, when I asked her to clarify something, she rudely said, "as I already said." I told her that I thought this was a friendlier establishment which she ignored. I rarely write a complaining yelp review. It takes a lot for me to complain. The perfect family owned Greek diner. It's a little place in Evanston that only takes cash but boy is it worth it. I make the trip once every 4 months or so, and I always get the skirt steak, with greek fries extra crispy. Idk what they put in the sauce for the steak and the fries but it is addicting. Adding feta to the fries turns them into Maria fries which are truly amazing. The tzatziki is home made and the gyros is great. Try feta cheese on a cheeseburger and you'll never go back to cheddar. The portions are fair and the prices are reasonable. Service is nice, definitely got the family feel. The owners daughter is almost always there and she remembers the regulars. The food is acceptable and they rarely get orders wrong. The prices have gone up slightly but not enough to be prohibitive. Regardless, I'll never be back due to the social climate. A word to management - tell your wait staff that if they're going to insult gay customers, they should do so out of ear shot. It's not like there were special dietary demands or time demands.
