I go for the programming, and the experienced coaches. If you want to get better at strength training , crossfit WOD's or just get a great workout in, this is the place. I dropped in while I was visiting from out of state. The workout was challenging, and I was happy I could get my workout in while traveling for work. The reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the culture was a little odd. No one in the gym introduced themselves to me except for 1 female in each class. Everyone else just staired at me. The coach didnt introduce me to the class, which was odd. Also, it is pretty customary when you drop in the coach usually asks, "where are you from" or "what are you in town for?" Or asks if I have any restrictions on movement/injuries. It was just odd. When we did bar work, no one checked form. If I come back, and I have to stay in the area, I will probably drop in again if there is nothing else around and I need to get a workout in, but if I had the choice, I may try something different. read more

This gym lured me in with a "join a free 6 week program" thing online. IT WAS NOT REAL! I made time to drive 30 min there, waited 15min more and had to drive home another 30min disappointed and upset. Once I got there I noticed it had happened to others too. Then they're like, it'll be $600 if you wanna be in it. I told them how misleading their ads were and that they were only waiting people's time and effort. They just responded with an "ok, we'll work on it". I get that nothing is free but $600?! That's far from anything close to free. You guys can just be a great gym and not have to do that to people. read more

Transferred to CF Costa Mesa from CF Newport Mesa and the transition has been fantastic! The coaches at CF Costa Mesa (Max, Gillian and Steve) are phenomenal - patient, knowledgable, caring, enthusiastic and encouraging. Recently the hour long workouts have been terrific, with a good stretchy warm up, a solid strength and an exhausting WOD - great way to start or end the day. An amazing Crossfit Box! From the very start, this box takes communication seriously. Emails are responded to rather promptly and professionally and there's no bullshit circles and hoops to run through to find out information. The coaches here are amazing and actually do pay attention to make sure you have the proper form. At some other crossfit gyms, the coaches just rally you on regardless of whether you are doing the movement correctly or not, just as long as you keep stacking on weight, which of course can lead to injury. CFCM is a bit different, they emphasize proper form and correct movements, and the coaches aren't afraid to stop you from doing the movement if you don't get it right (including demoting you to the dreaded PVC pipe!) What makes the gym so great though is the community it has built. They cheer you on and push you to do the best that you can do. The movements are scaled to your personal level, so the only person you have to compete with is yourself (unless you want to make that leaderboard they have posted!) read more

I've been to a bunch of the Crossfit gyms and bootcamps in the OC area and have CFCM as my favorite box. It's the most stacked facility I've seen with ice baths in addition to the standard fare of equipment. The coaches are great and scale you accordingly with your skill level and are all about stretching as much as the WOD. Came out in this area mainly to support my coach's weightlifting meet at another box so myself & another coach dropped in here at CrossFit Costa Mesa! Let's be real here... we were hoping to run into Christian Lucero but didn't find out till that morning that the competitor's class is at 10am. So we missed him by a good hour! It would've been a good fan girl moment. Check-in: - Dropped in on a Saturday morning for the 8am WOD & we were the first ones there because we drove an hour & 45 minutes to get to this box. - Unlike hidden boxes, this location is a very easy find! Huge box painted "CrossFit Costa Mesa" right outside. Google maps directs you to the right location. - Big parking lot with Hero/WOD names on every parking spot! So cool!! For a second, I thought the names were labeled for every member of the box, but it's the names of the WODs we do! - My coach had emailed them the day before to notify them that we'll be dropping in the following morning, but unfortunately we didn't get a response so we hoped they would let us drop in without hesitation which was no problem! - Met coach James! A very efficient coach. He made us sign the waiver & we waited until class started for him to instruct us. He was kind to introduce us first thing to the class so it was a good welcome in. - Drop in was $15 WOD: - Let me tell you... that warm up was a killer! LOL. They do not wait for you to finish. It literally was one movement after the other. Huge class so they definitely will not wait for one person to finish, but you gotta move quick. - It was a partnered lifting session kinda day! I met one of the girls who actually was using about the same numbers as myself so it was a good motivation & teamwork. - James was coming around critiquing lifts & I'm one who likes to be told what I need to work on & what went wrong in the lift. I appreciated that. - Worked up to a good 95% of our max & that class went by quick! Box: - This box has EVERY. THING! The moment we entered in we noticed the interior, decorations of all the shirts, honoring all countries with the flags, & several rooms of different equipment. - Bathrooms are unisex with showers. - They have an ice bath room!! - Lockers are provided if needed, but they also have cubbies for your quick & go equipment during your WOD. - Separate room for weightlifting. - They have their own lounge area where kids can play, a display of all their CrossFit games/weightlifting meet accomplishments, & couches to lounge on with a TV. - They sell Progenex products in the lounge room along with their own box's gear. (We were told they're in the process of making new shirts) - Just a very fully equipped box. - My coach was told that this is one of the very FEW boxes that did not close down out of several in Orange County. I couldn't ask for anything more from a gym. I have tried a variety options: LA fitness, expensive personal training, boot camps. CFCM is by far my favorite and most effective way to work out. I joined about 5 months ago and go 4-5 times a week. I am usually the slowest person (and using the lightest weights) but I still leave feeling accomplished. In the 5 months I have been there, I have improved so much thanks to the great coaching and supportive community. My favorite thing about this gym is that there are a variety of coaches, from nurturing, to encouraging to pushing. They are all so helpful in their own way. I joined CFCM about a month ago. We have nothing but rave reviews about it. Awesome gym. Great staff. I train with Gillian in the mornings and she is an awesome trainer, really helps out with technique. The gym has an awesome family feel, unlike any gym I've been to before. All the other trainers seem to be solid as well, but I spend most of our time with Gillian and are quite happy. We work out 3 to 4 days a week at CFCM and the cost is $150/month per person. The level of attention you get is close to that of having a personal trainer which is awesome. They teach, guide, and push you. For $150 a month, I consider that a helluva value. They also do a local produce co-op. Awesome produce at a reasonable price, delivered to the gym. Solid. I looked at a couple other CrossFit gyms in the area, we chose this one because of their knowledge, larger space, and attitudes. Wonderful gym from the workouts to the staff to the location. I really loved this gym and think that anyone who has the ability to make this their Crossfit home should do so. Workouts: always different and target different areas of your body. There are days when we focus more on building up strength and days when we focus on agility and cardio. Its a nice surprise everyday when you get to class. Coaches: super knowledgeable, nice, approachable, and helpful. I was at insane beginner status when I was at the gym but everyday the coaches took their time to really help me and give me one-on-one coaching. I always felt like they were truly invested in helping me get a good workout and they wanted to see me get better. I cannot emphasize how great the coaches at this gym are. Facility: very spacious. Step into this gym and you might feel intimidated at first with all the weights slamming down, but give it time and you will truly feel at home. I've worked out at another crossfit box and it did not even compare to the experience I had at CFCM. The coaches and staff all do their jobs with pride and you can really tell that they enjoy being there and want you to as well. This place is run like a top notch business. Any email I've ever sent to them has been answered promptly and any question I've had about hours, billing, merchandise, etc. has always been handled in the most helpful and professional way. They're not trying to sell you anything or lure you in with any ridiculous coupon deals. They simply tell you what they're offering and it's either the place for you or it's not. Take it or leave it. The workouts of course are always a challenge and you always see all different ages and athletic abilities coming together to tackle each workout together. There is a real sense of community and family here. Each coach always gives me such good instruction, helps me correct my form, and even try to get to know the members. They've got some really great amenities that most other gyms would kill to have: showers in all the bathrooms, ice baths, hot tubs, a kids play area for those busy parents who still want to come in and workout, and tons and tons of equipment! The only con for this place would be that it's so popular, so sometimes the classes can get quite large. But the coaches never have any trouble handling such a large class and working out the logistics of it. I always feel comfortable bringing up any issues or concerns or injuries I may have during a workout and the coaches always give me good tips or advice on how I can scale it to make sure everything is done safely. That is really what it is, a community, not just a gym. The trainers are motivating and supportive and all the athletes are friendly and positive as well. Cliche thought it is, I can only say that CrossFit Costa Mesa has changed my life. I've been training and following the diet (with varying degrees of fidelity) for about 6 weeks now. I've lost 25lbs of fat and put on at least 10lbs of muscle. More importantly I've found a new challenge at a time in my life when I didn't think I would. The team at CFCM are amazing. Helpful, enthusiastic, supportive and tough when necessary. The merger with CrossFit Newport Mesa has been a great overall experience. The facility is stacked here with plenty of parking, space and equipment. Max, Gillian, Stephen, Tina, Andy and Dan are uniquely helpful in there own way. There is a mixed combination of competitors and other members of all different shapes, sizes and athletic skill sets here. I met Coach Aaron, Lindsay, and other members from CFCM after completing a Goruck Challenge(GRC) in December of 2012. During the physical evolutions of the GRC, the members from CFCM performed and excelled beyond the majority of the rest of groups capabilities. I was curious what they did to prepare and they invited me out to their gym. I was blown away by CFCM's large facility with amazing features of bathrooms, showers, ice bath tubs, a day care area, and contiuously expanding and improving from within. CFCM's best asset is their knowlegable, experienced, and accomodating staff. They are very focused on form, technique, and consistency versus over lifting and having you just go though the work out. I did my L1 cert at this gym and the box itself was amazing. Probably one of the better ones I've trained at. Not only is the equipment top notch, they have recovery/mobility stations. After years of "pumping up" and getting "big" got old, I stumbled upon CrossFit Costa Mesa looking for something completely new. I started on 3/09 and since then I completely transformed my body, fitness level, and overall knowledge of functional strength. The initial transition may be hard because the lifts and workouts will be totally different then you are used to. BUT everything is scalable and the coaches and "community" you do the workouts with are top notch, motivational, and one of those things you just have to see it to believe it. In the short term you may question the price of CFCM vs. 24 Hr Fitness, but in the long term you will see how CFCM becomes a larger part of your life mentality and physically and doesn't just stop after the WOD-workout of the day. I moved back to Costa Mesa and I was looking for a gym that could help me achieve my goal of losing weight and with that lower my blood pressure, improve my stamina, and help me with my back issues. GREAT CF BOX. I had to attend a conference at a local hotel. I called & emailed the day before to see if I could drop-in. CFCM was very accomodating and professional to an out-of-town CFitter. The facilities are great. There is much wide open space and there are plenty of weights. The coaches (Lindsay and Aaron) were both attentive, knowledgeable and VERY friendly. Pros: - They have excellent coaches. They are nice, supportive, knowledgeable, and not over the top in energy. - They emphasize proper form and have a comprehensive onbaording process so you can learn the stuff before taking on a full class. - It's a huge, beautiful facility and they have nice clean showers too. - The have a real community feeling with lots of extra activities like hikes and potluck dinners (there is not a negative person in the whole place). Cons: -It's a bit pricey, but its nearly the same as every other box in the area. -Pretty big class size at peak hours. -I wish they had more time options on the weekends (I work sat/sun so I cannot make the 9 or 11 am class options). -It's addictive, be prepared to get hooked. read more

This is my third CrossFit box in two years of doing CrossFit, and I'm hoping to stay. The coaches are fantastic, (I typically work with Steve and Max), the programs are different and keep it fun, and the members really care about each other and we all help one another improve. Today's work out (March 27, 2018), was one of the reasons I really like working out with this group. Some good solid strength training followed by a pretty difficult WOD. I've been going to CFCM for a little over a year now, but I've been training in Crossfit for almost three years now. CFCM is by far the best box that I have found. I've visited or been a member of about 10 different boxes, and what makes the difference at CFCM is the coaching and the programing. Aaron, Gillian, Max and the rest of the coaching staff are really knowledgable, warm, and also help push you. The programming is challenging, always encouraging us to try something new. That being said, the coaches are quick to encourage scaling options. Overall a great place. Love the community and the training. One of the things I feel sets CFCM apart is it's onboarding program (a 2 week "intro" period that is required before you can start attending open sessions). The onboarding program focuses on the CrossFit philosophy, ensures you are using proper form, and teaches you the basics of the movements used every day. Makes sense. When I started CrossFit toward the end of last year, I thought this was a pretty standard deal. I've had a few friends join other CrossFit gyms lately, and when they explained to me their onboarding program, I felt fortunate to have gone through onboarding at CFCM, where the program is more extensive. The community and coaches at CFCM are great. Nothing but support, encouragement and solidarity, which keeps me motivated and excited to go every day. I really get the feeling that our coaches care about our progress and our success. This is not just a gym for me. It's not just working out. There are of course physical benefits, but it's a continuous process of bettering myself and reaching new levels of mental toughness and confidence. The facility is absolutely beautiful. The equipment is new, the ice baths work, the showers are clean, and most importantly, it is HUGE. So there's no need to worry about getting slapped in the face with a kettlebell. More important than the stuff are the coaches/staff. Alec Hanson has harvested a wonderful community of like-minded people working to better their own lives as well as the lives of others. Newcomers, whether completely new to CrossFit or visiting from out of town, are totally welcomed. The coaches are all athletes themselves, most of which have competed at a top level, so they know the process and want to help. You absolutely do NOT have to be an elite athlete to go here. There is lots of attention and help for those who need it (without judgement or ridicule like at some other gyms in the area). I have been going to CrossFit Costa Mesa for about five months now, and it is honestly changing my life for the better. CrossFit is definitely not easy. It pushes me and it challenges both my body and mind; and each week I can feel myself getting stronger physically and mentally. Time and time again, I find myself doing things that I did not think I could do. Recently, I trained for and ran the San Francisco Marathon. I had run one marathon before, three years ago, and I expected this one would be pretty similar. I expected my time would be about the same, that my body would hurt during, and for at least a week after the race, and I expected that around mile 21, I would hit that invisible but so debilitating wall, and I would want to stop. To my pleasant surprise, this race was completely different. Yeah it was long and my feet and knees started to ache, but at no point did I think to myself, "I can't do this." I kept waiting for the wall, but it never came. I knew from my CrossFit experiences, that any pain was only temporary, and that it would be well worth the finish. It was most definitely worth it... my last five miles were my fastest, and I finished under my goal time. My body recovered quickly with practically no soreness, and I was back to running and CrossFit within a couple of days. I have no doubt that CrossFit CM is a huge reason for the improvement in my race. However, more important to me, since working out with CrossFit CM, I am a stronger, more confident, and much happier person. There is nothing like being pushed and encouraged by a community that wants to see you succeed, and to accomplish things that you thought were not possible. I feel so grateful to have found such an amazing, unique, and fun "gym" with awesome trainers who really know what they are doing. Come and try it... seriously!!! read more

This place is top notch all the way around. It is an incredibly large facility with plenty of equipment so it never feels cramped. The bathrooms (3 of them including showers) are nicer than the ones I use at my corporate America job. Other than the incredibly clean, open facility, the staff are incredibly passionate and well versed in what they do. They encourage a group atmosphere and in no time at all, you will truly feel part of something special. There are always at least two coaches per session. They are also very good at mentioning minor tweaks and adjustments without necssarily making you feel like an idiot, which is always nice. Especially in the beginning, when integrating with the group classes, (at first) which can be intimidating. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking to start their CrossFit journey. After visiting a few, this place gave the best foundation and beginner instruction hands down. read more

Lindsay is one of the most fit and amazing trainers I've had the pleasure to meet. All the trainers are above average and lovely people, but lindsay is in a league of her own because it is not about how much you can lift, or how fast you can run she is genuinely interested in improving your quality of life Through fitness.
