Went to Chalk Performance CrossFit with my buddy Whitten and had a really solid workout. The whole vibe of the place was super good from the second we walked in. The community there was super sweet and kind, especially for it being my first visit. A bunch of people introduced themselves right away and made it feel way less intimidating. Our trainer Caitlin was awesome too. She was extremely sweet but made sure to push us the entire time, adding weight and keeping us moving at a good pace. It was that perfect balance of being supportive but not letting you coast through the workout. Also gotta shout out Jess, she was super sweet and made me feel even more welcomed. You can tell they have a real community there and it is not just about the workout, it is about the people too. Let me start off by saying that I think the whole Crossfit thing is bazaar. It is super culty past the level of annoying. One cannot escape it, but this is about as close as I am able to get to it and this pleases me. This is my 3rd Crossfit gym I have been to in the area and I am here to stay. What Crossfit Chalk has to offer: -Ryan Fischer (look him up) -Phenomenal coaching and programing from every coach here (WODIFY keeps track of your results so you don't have too) -Facility- top notch equipment...who says a "box" has to smell and look like sh*t? -WODS/ SWEAT- everyone can say their box is better, but they aren't... come in for a trial and this will prove it (I suggest Sundays) -Members- They all smile and all engage with current and new people. Welcoming group of people that have left all the other gyms in the area to form a solid community called Chalk. -Best shape I have ever been in period. -Knowledgable in regards to movements, nutrition, and overall expectations. -Friday Night Lights (competition) -Nutrition Challenge (8+ weeks) - Parking! - A party during Christmans...jesus I felt like sh*t the next day! What CHALK IS NOT: -Easy -Moderately Easy -TRX from 24 hour or your local globe gym -No Sub 10 minute workouts here -Aged Equipment/ Facility -Coaches that will not engage with current members let alone new members (the "i'm too cool to speak with you attitude) - Copy Cats- the highest form of flattery is impersonation. There are a lot of gyms in the area that are copying what Ryan is doing. Problem is that they are not Ryan/ Chalk.. Bottom line is that 80% of the 200+ members have left other local gyms in the area to come to Chalk. Insanity, OCCF, Balboa, Costa Mesa, etc... Sorry to call it out, but Ryan has created something that people want and he is delivering hand over fist. Are there good coaches and WODS at other gyms...of course. Personally speaking I am not going to be satisfied with some of the "Pros" and some of the "Cons" in order to be a member. I like Chalk. read more

My wife and I are original members of Chalk, having moved over from another box in town. There are a number of reasons we made the switch. The primary reason is the owner and coach, Ryan Fischer. Ryan is an accomplished CrossFit competitor and overall athlete. He has a passion for fitness and nutrition that is contagious, and it carries through to the other staff and members of Chalk. He is also a total perfectionist, making him obsessed with having the best of everything - facilities, equipment, programming and culture. Let's start with the facility. Most CrossFit facilities are old industrial units (nothing wrong with that). But Chalk is a beautiful, high end facility with nice, clean bathrooms, showers and lockers in a great neighborhood - why not get more for your money? It's got a great energy to it. Prior to switching to CrossFit 2+ years ago, I was a member of Equinox/Sports Club Irvine for 10+ years and Chalk is much closer to Equinox than it is an industrial unit. Chalk also has top of the line equipment and plenty of it, meaning we're never restricted in a crowded class due to lack of equipment. Chalk also benefits from ample parking, which is a huge benefit after having belonged to a box in which parking was always a challenge. Now to the programming. Not all CrossFit programming is built the same. Ryan takes pride in his programming, to the extent that other gyms in the area blatantly copy him. I've brought a handful of friends in from other boxes and they all commented on the quality of the programming. Let's be honest - it's hard. Really hard. There will never be a day in which you will find the workout to be easy. But if that scares you off, CrossFit isn't for you. All of the above leads to a culture at Chalk that is unsurpassed. It's a great blend of people - young and old, extremely fit to not so fit, married and single - we've got everything at Chalk and everyone is cool. New people are welcomed in by members and staff, who are happy to help. it's a very encouraging environment in which people will push you to improve in a very positive way. We've made more friends than I can count at Chalk and I look forward to seeing my 6 am crew every day. It reminds me of my competitive team sport days as a kid in which a bond is formed with others through hard work and a common goal to get stronger, move faster and look and feel better. I've been doing Crossfit for about 3 years now. I had been at another gym in the area for a about 2.5 years prior to joining Chalk in September 2014. I noticed that in the last year at my old gym, I really seemed to plateau and found I needed something new, both in coaching and in the gym itself. Chalk opened up just about a mile from my house and driving by it everyday I would look inside and gawk at how clean and bright the gym was (a rarity you'll find in Crossfit gyms). They offer all new comers 2 free classes to try them out, so I took them up on the offer. I was surprised and impressed with not just how much better the gym looked, but how much better the actual programming was. Ryan puts a lot of effort into the programming for each day. It's also programming that he uses himself, which is something you can take to the bank considering he's a games athlete as well! Since I've been coming to Chalk, I've seen a lot of improvement in all my lifts, and have broken through a number of PR's I had been stuck at for a long time. In addition to the clean look and awesome programming, the culture of the gym is great, with a group of people that are very open, honest and playful with each other. After moving from the Inland Empire to the beautiful city of Costa Mesa, my beautiful wife and I were on a search (mainly for her, I'm more of a runner) for a CrossFit gym. We tried multiple locations in the area and after one workout we knew Chalk was going to be it! 2 months later I am now a member of Chalk and we truly love and look forward to every workout. The owner Ryan Fischer (Awesome super fit dude) seems to always be there motivating, greeting and being super helpful during all the classes. All the trainers and I do mean every single one Erin, YaYa and Mike are all super awesome! I had never tried CrossFit in the past and they have been very patient and continue to teach me proper form and technique. Although it might seem intimidating when you first step in (seems like everyone in here is super fit, good indicator of a great CrossFit "box") I highly recommend Chalk and can assure you won't find a CrossFit gym as awesome as this one! What a facility! Ryan Fischer has certainly changed what is expected of your local box. All the equipment is brand-new and meticulous maintained while the facility is modern, clean and very orderly! The coaches are all competitors who live, breath and sleep Crossfit and are always very helpful in providing guidance and instruction. As for the workouts, well I still get butterflies before each WOD because i know I am about to be pushed beyond my limits. And if you want another option besides the Crossfit WOD there are sweat classes which are equally tough if not harder than the WOD but removes any Olympic lifting. These classes are a great option if your just starting to sip the Crossfit Kool-Aid and not ready for all the Olympic lifting. So many crossfit gyms in the area..all with 5 stars, nice staff, good trainers, nice community blah, blah. This is my 3rd CrossFit gym in the area and let me tell you what differentiates it from the rest. 1.Ryan Fischer - He is an amazing athlete, experienced CrossFitter and one of the most humble and nice guys you'll ever meet. His knowledge of nutrition and fitness is second to none. He is CONSTANTLY giving members tips to improve. During my first visit to CHALK, Ryan gave me more instruction than I had previously received during my entire last 2 years at my old CF gym. Sure, proper instruction when you first start CF is critical to avoiding injury, but even more impt is continued instruction to improve. 2.Programming - The workouts are hard..If you've never done CF, you can start off with a program called SWEAT, kinda a CF lite without barbells. Or just jump into CF, where there's usually a strength portion and a workout. Repeat 3-4 times a week, get a good nutrition consult from Ryan and you will get fit. I'm a 43 yo female and everywhere I go, I am asked what I do to stay in shape. You pay one price to get this programming..not an additional $x per month for a competition program, or oly class instruction. There's no nickel and diming you all over the place. Oh, you need to practice a movement. There's also OPEN GYM almost all day long. 3.Gym/Equipment - There's ample parking and as mentioned by others, this gym is pristine. It gets professionally cleaned EVERY DAY. The equipment undergoes regular maintenance, the weights are high quality, oly style and the bathrooms/facility are amazing. There are showers and lockers, too. There's also a super nice kids room with toys and a TV with netflix! 4. Members/Community - There are nice, fun, crazy members...and then there's the CHALK community. You get to know everyone, whether you workout in the morning or evening. There are no cliques to be found and parties are open to everyone, not just the chosen few. You cannot have a workout here without laughing your ass off after you get your ass kicked by the workout itself. The parties will leave you wondering if it really happened or it was just a dream. Don't be fooled by the other reviews of crossfit gyms in the area. You want to get fit and really enjoy it? Come to CF CHALK. I'm never leaving. read more

Moving to SoCal from a pretty established CrossFit in Ohio made me nervous, but Chalk has easily become my new home. There isn't a nicer facility in the area. The coaching staff all comes from competitive backgrounds and Ryan, the owner is awesome! Classes are fun and the programming is what initially drew me to the gym. They also offer a lot of open gym time, which is hard to come by. Everything is always up to date online, and they use the wodify app, so tracking results is super convenient! I've tried several different crossfits in the area and this one is the best. If crossfit sounds intimidating try their "sweat" classes. These are mainly cardio combined with simple movements that are great for beginners but still challenging. The community is really supportive and so are the coaches. I have done crossfit for a long time and have been to and trained at many different boxes. There are a ton of crossfit gyms especially in Socal so what makes this one different? 3 things: 1.) Community - Chalk has an amazing community of people from all walks of life and ability levels. No one has an ego! The members are very welcoming and encouraging. 2.) Coaching - this box is owned and coached by an extremely well known, well regarded and bad ass crossfitter, Ryan Fischer. He leads by example and all the members benefit from his knowledge on nutrition, Olympic lifting and making sure form is correct. 3.) the X factor - you don't know what it is and may be different for everyone but this box HAS IT! For me it is the ability to train harder, smarter and go way beyond my threshold that I thought was possible. CHALK has turned me from a gym hater into loving it. I have tried the gym and other Crossfit gyms and never could keep myself going. I now look forward to going to CHALK. The Trainers are extremely knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and motivating. The facility is kept immaculate as well. Everything is clean and organized. This is not a stinky box. The community is amazing as well. Everyone loves the gym so much they are always welcoming to new people. There is no ego or exclusivity at CHALK. Even the world class athletes will help you out. There are a few different types of classes you can take as well. They both kick your ass in their own way (you'll have to go talk to CHALK about them to learn more). You can come into CHALK as a competing Crossfit athlete and get your ass handed to you or be an absolute newbie. For the newbies, the trainers will scale the workout for your ability. They will also make sure you don't get hurt. For those who compete, I'm sure you know who Ryan Fischer is and know he means business. CHALK is world class. Sign up for a month and you'll be in the best shape of your life. Another note, I have learned a great deal about nutrition from CHALK as well. Working out is good but paired with the right nutrition you can surpass any plateau you may have. Ryan put on a recent challenge with amazing results for everyone that did it. Even the BodPod body fat measuring team said it was the best results they had ever seen. Through the 8 week challenge, I dropped 10 lbs of fat, gained 2 lbs of muscle in 8 weeks. That's 20% body fat to 12%. I have gotten better results since the challenge as well because of the guidance I received from Ryan. I thought I ate well and never thought I would get down that low but with the guidance of CHALK, I did. CHALK has changed my lifestyle into a much better, healthier, happier one. I started crossfiting ( joined the cult ) as others would say a little over 2 years ago. My first day I fell in love and knew that it was the sport for me. After a few months things started to change and I kind of lost interest and just did not have the drive. Chalk is THE gym if you want to get excited about exercise again. Forget getting in shape (that's going to happen, so don't worry), but you will wake-up excited to put in the work. That's worth the cost of admission alone. It has been 4 years since I joined my first Crossfit gym in downtown Los Angeles. My two years there were great and I loved the community at that gym. As it happens, that's where I first met Ryan (the owner of Chalk) and Stacey (the physical therapist who runs her business on site at Chalk), who were both coaches there. After moving to Newport Beach two years ago, I took a break from Crossfit and exercise in general. I tried another gym in the area for a few months and was not impressed with the facility and left pretty quickly. I ended up joining 24 hours fitness thinking I was over Crossfit as a whole. Then one day I bumped into Ryan at Fashion Island. We said our hellos and he told me about his new gym. Told me to come by and check it out for a week... I signed up my first day. The list of pros here are endless... the programming is well thought out, the coaches care about your progress and are going to push you, top of the line equipment, it's one of the cleanest gyms you will find and most importantly the community is the most welcoming I've seen (that's what we all love about Crossfit, right?). CrossFit Chalk. Where do I start??? First, CrossFit Chalk may be the cleanest box I've ever been to (and I've been to over 50 across the globe). Second, the facility itself is amazing! The layout is well designed; allowing room to move, breathe, and get your WOD on without fighting for space. Bonus, the equipment Chalk has acquired is top notch (my favorite is the stable of Assault AirBikes as you enter the gym). Last (and most important), Chalk has phenomenal coaches. Ashlee and Jeff were very welcoming upon my arrival. During class, Ashlee had a good warm up prepared, gave me some great pointers/queues, and had a spicy WOD programmed for us (sumo DLHPs and box jumps, let's just say that it escalated quickly!). I've visited many boxes over the years, and this is the cleanest and sexiest! Tried the Olympic lifting class today, taught by THE Ryan Fischer. He's great at teaching/coaching.
