Based on the wonderful reviews of this business I brought my brand new sport coat to have the sleeve length altered. It's a small quaint shop and you can tell she has been at this location for some time. Note: I arrived when she first opened and I did not smell any cigarette smoke in her shop. I only read a handful or so of the recent reviews, and there were no reviews stating the fact that she smoked. Upon further reading, you'll come to understand why I'm mentioning this fact. I agree she knows her craft and it was appreciated that she finished the alternation a day earlier than quoted. The job was well done and I asked her what I owed her for the work. What she quoted me on the phone was not the price she requested I pay when I arrived to pick up my coat. I had no problem paying the few extra dollars because her work was well done. I also noted there was a very strong smell of cigarette smoke this time I entered her shop! My big disappointment was that my brand new sport coat now reeked of cigarette smoke! I could have complained but chose not to, because there was nothing she could do to get rid of the smell. I had to bring my sports coat to have it dry cleaned to get rid of the smell and I hadn't even worn it yet! She is a nice lady and she does good work, but I won't be going back. read more

Elaine is the fantastic tailor who always does a superb job. She is such a professional at her craft. I wrote her a check in advance for her services, but she wouldn't cash it until I was satisfied - weeks later when I returned! As you enter in this very small place, you'll notice that she is very busy and has a lot of work at hand, BUT she always has plenty of time for you. I recently purchased a navy sports jacket as I neeeded one for my wardrobe, knowing it would need alterations as I'm not an off-the-rack body. After reading reviews on Crown Tailors, it sounded like my kind of place and it is! Candid comments from the owner, Elena, including well-deserved criticism for wearing too heavy/thick a shirt when trying on the jacket and wondering if I wouldn't be better off returning this one and buying something that would fit better, to comments about the "quality" of today's clothing. The owner of this place is great! She has such a funny personality and knows her stuff. I took a bridesmaid dress that was so big that the material literally could have been used for a sheet on a twin sized bed. She made it fit me like a glove for only $22! So I found a really great vintage sport coat at a thrift store in amazing condition. It needed to be tailored and I took it to this little shop. The lady who the store was very friendly and gave me all sorts of advice on how to tailor it. She only charged me $18 for a great job and took 5 days. I'm in the midst of a significant weight loss, and don't want to buy new clothes until I reach my goal. So I found Crown Tailors for help, and discovered a gem. Elaine has now altered two blazers, seven shirts, five pairs of pants and a suit for me.The work is gorgeous and the price is more than fair -- it's pretty much a steal. Note that she only accepts cash or checks -- no credit cards. As others have said, this is a small, local shop. She's been in business since 1965, and on my most recent visit the other customers included a police officer, a school choir, a midshipman from the Maritime Academy, an official of the Knights of Columbus and two or three others. She's the unofficial Mayor of Vallejo, and to spend time in her shop is to appreciate the value of a truly local business. If you go, be prepared to step back in time. The shop is small, jammed with fabric, notions and clothes waiting to be altered. You may have to wait if she's working with someone else, but she'll welcome you and get to you as soon as she can. Her accent is strong, her English sometimes fractured, but just put yourself in her hands and do whatever she suggests. There were 3 bridesmaids dresses that had to get shorten and make it a little tighter. We came in a few days before the wedding, the lady there were able to get it done in such little time. She's a nice sweet older lady. Our dresses were still a little longer then expected but it was alright, everything was fine. She's more affordable then most places as well. read more

Yes, Crown Tailors lived up to its previous 5-star reviews! Elaine was efficient, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. She also gave me pointers for how to wear my wedding dress, including tips on undergarments and double stick tape. Then she added some loops on the back so the train could be 'bustled' up for the reception, figuring out an ingenious system to distribute the weight evenly. Elaine is great, she was very honest about how my coat would fit and if we made the modifications I asked for and she was right. I bought a long jacket and I wanted to make it a couple inches shorter but at the end it turned out to look great as it was, she made the sleeves shorter. Went here because of the fab reviews here on Yelp. Got 2 jeans hemmed and a bridesmaid dress altered. Elaine, the only lady that works here, is definitely no nonsense kind of lady. She tells you how it is, even if its not the best news (i.e. - i need to lose a few lbs). I take no offense because it's the truth and she said it as a matter of fact kind of way, not to insult you. She is great and she did a great job on my stuff. She's been around long enough to know what she is doing and her prices are fair. OK, this place doesn't need another 5 star review, but I felt I had to write one because the owner is so awesome. Incredibly kind with old world values, in the best possible sense. Vallejo is quite a distance from where I live, but Crown Tailors is well worth the drive. Apart from the fact that seeing Elaine always makes my day, she does amazing work. The quality of her work surpasses that of all the 5 star San Francisco and Berkeley tailors I've been to and her prices are about one half to one third of what those stores (or even dry cleaners) generally charge. I went in there a few days ago to get a seam that had ripped re-sewn. When Elaine looked at my jacket she found another seam that had ripped in the sleeve, all and all I think about 8in of seam had come undone in my 5 year old jacket. Elaine told me I should go grab some food and come back and she would have it done within the hour so I wouldn't have to come back another day to pick it up. I ended up staying in the store and when all was said and done I think I was in there for 20 min. Beware, this is a one-woman store and she is very busy. I went in mid early August after I had called to discuss wedding dress alterations. I brought my dress and tried it on but every idea I had to make a slight alteration was shot down. She must not have wanted to do the work or have the material but all in all it was a frustrating experience. We settled on trying to attach 3 bustles under my gown and I agreed to come back the first weekend of September because the woman said she had 3 weddings in august and couldn't do anything before that. Fast forward to the today -the first Friday in September- I call to confirm my appointment for tomorrow and to make sure I wasn't making a trip for nothing. This woman is almost yelling at me while talking to a customer and telling me the exact same thing she said in August!!! I have 2 weeks until my wedding and have waited for my appointment and I still get passed off! Now I am scrambling to find a tailor somewhere else. I will never go back to this woman. I do not suggest going if you have a deadline. I never write reviews on yelp but this experience was so bad I made a point of doing so. read more

The lady that works here is amazing. She knows exactly what she is doing, she even told me how my dress should be worn to make me look slimmer. Awesome. I bought in a horrendous maid of honor dress here that was nearly 2 sizes too big for me. She only charged me $40 to bring in the sides of the dress and to hem the bottom shorter. It was done in 8 days. Very glad my mother recommended me to this place. I have more weddings this year so I will be bringing all of my dresses here from now on. read more

I took my pants here for alterations at the waist and pant length. I decided to try this place out after reading the reviews here on yelp as I've never had any clothes that have needed tailoring before (I wear scrubs to work so I don't get very fancy). I was confident, despite the guy who only gave one star in his review. I dropped my pants off in the morning on my way to work and they were fitted while I was wearing them. I was told I could pick them up a week later-totally fine since I didn't need them until a couple days after that. I work off hours and was having trouble picking the pants up the day I was told that I could. Elaine worked with me (to the point of being above and beyond) so I could have my pants in plenty of time to leave for my interview. I first came to her when I had my bridesmaid dress taken in and shortened a few years ago. She did a great job and I've been coming back ever since. I am really small so I have to get everything altered. She does a great job on my sun dresses, pants, jackets, and blazers. She will tell you what she can do, the best options to make it look the best, &what may not look so good but overall how comfortable and how you want it to look is her priority. I used to go to the Gateway dry cleaners to get things done but there quality is just not the same, they don't really help you see how it will look and fix the items the way they should be and how they will turn out and they are more expensive for the lack of quality. Elaine will fix the item you are wearing, show you how it will fall, have you walk and move around see if the changes are going to be comfortable. When I come to crown tailors, I have about 10/15 items too so I always get a little deal :) read more
