We have been here a few times but the last few times have not been that great. Some of our sides came out cold and silverware was dirty. I asked what pies were fresh since the last time I got something the meringue was chewy. I selected one of the pies she said were fresh today but it was awful. First of all she brought out a piece of pie in a small bowl. The portion was tiny. The meringue slid right off and had a string egg taste like it wasn't mixed properly. The coconut itself was just okay very dense. I had a few bites only and our waitress didn't even inquire if something was wrong. Just brought our check. Very disappointing. read more

A friend invited me to meet her at Crow's Country Cafe in Anna, TX. And she asked if a buffet was ok with me. (Sure!) Honestly, I almost called back to ask if I needed to bring cash, thinking small cafe quite a ways out (nope, plastic works fine). I arrived before her and enjoyed sitting out front, just experiencing the old time town feel of it. After we got seated and ordered beverages, we went over to the buffet. They have it laid out in stations. I fully intended to go for an omelet, but that got totally bumped by the entree stations: fried catfish, ham, chicken-fried steak, some kind of chicken, mashed potatoes, a cabbage dish and several others. The fried catfish had a great texture, and a good amount of pepper in the crust (and just a tad too much salt for someone who adds none to anything). I skipped the chicken-fried steak - just not my deal. The ham was wonderful. The chicken had a very good flavor, but had sat a bit longer than it should have (we were there about 1:30, so kind of late). Oh, and that cabbage dish? Killer. Really. But honestly, the kicker for me was the second trip, to the desserts. They had small slices of pie and pieces of cake, which I thought worked well because I could easily justify trying a couple of different ones (and pay for it later!). They had German Chocolate cake (I overheard someone at another table say that was their favorite), Banana Pudding, Boston Cream Pie, Lemon Poundcake, fresh fruit, Lemon Meringue pie. Now, lemme tell you about that Lemon Meringue pie. That baby could win awards. Man, oh man. If you like Lemon Meringue, you know how we're always getting it in *hopes* it will be what it should be, all the while knowing better than to get our hopes up? Yeah. This is it. Even though the rest of the food was good, I wasn't expecting that pie. I took a bite and just groaned. Explosion of lemon, just sweet enough, and the buttery, flakey crust under. Holy moly. I asked my friend, "do you like Lemon Meringue?" "eh, not really" "Still, you've really gotta try this - it's unbelievable." She took a bite and died. A new Lemon Meringue fan, now that she knows what it *can* be like. Obviously fresh, from scratch, no canned nuthin'. WOW. The baker, Rachel, was tending bar - they got her over for us to tell her directly. And we were more than happy to. The Crows saw a need for a home cooking restaurant out there, and so they darned well opened one, hire culinary school-trained chefs to do it. And it shows. Oh, and my friend says that even if something isn't on the menu, the chef will give it a shot if possible, so that's nice to know. And given how taken I was with that pie, I'm counting my blessings that I don't live TOO close! read more

Came with my family for a Sunday brunch. Waitress was nice, but not attentive. I cleared our dirty plates on my own. We were never offered refills. Food was decent. Seemed frozen, although maybe a higher level of frozen food. Chicken fried steak looked great, but was gristle. Anyone who has ever had real, West Texas steaks will understand. My family will not be eating here anytime soon. My husband ordered the meatloaf and it looked as though is had been reheated. It was very dried out looking. The menu says that the chicken fried steak isp homemade, hand battered. When it came out and I took a bite, the bite was full of fat grizzly meat. I thought okay I got a bad bite, the next few after that were the same. I ended up having to spit it out in my napkin. I normally would not complain but I didn't eat hardly any of my meal after that, so I told the waitress. She sent the manager or owner not sure over to our table. When I explained the meat to him,, he said " Thats just how they come out of the packaging, sometimes you get good ones sometimes you don't". Wait a minute, I thought these were home made!!!! He continued on with his excuse and said I'm sorry, would you like a to go container. Um no thank you. Really! If I was going to eat it wouldn't I have when it was hot? Anyhow those were the main disinterest. The other thing I would like to mention is we sat there for 10 minutes before anyone even paid attention that we were there, mean while there was a waitress clearing the table right beside us. Found this place by accident when the place my sister and I originally planned to meet was out of business. What a great experience! Jeremy was our bartender/server and was very attentive without hovering, even after we moved out to the patio! He let us know that it was Happy Hour and served us up two giant frosty mugs of brew with the perfect head on it!! Our order came our super quick, I mean like less than 5 minutes! We shared an order of pulled pork nachos that were pretty dang good! I was very impressed that not only did they not squawk that we shared, they had no problem putting the red onions and bbq sauce to the side and giving us a to go box for the leftovers. The corn chips were fresh, thin and crispy but not so thin they couldn't hold up to the toppings! And THANK YOU JESUS real cheese, not that canned crap that tastes like stomach acid! HUGE PORTION! I wish I had thought to take a picture. The hostess was super sweet and answered all my questions with enthusiasm. So they are biker friendly and while they do not have designated parking for bikes, she did tell me to give her a call if we have a large group coming and she would section off between the buildings for us (even tho it is grass). Went to Anna and found a slice of heaven. If heaven is "grandmas down home cookin" From the chicken fried steak to the "leave the skin in the spuds" - the Sunday buffet was spot on! Corn bread like your momma made (or grandma in my case) has the right touch of sweetness! I also recommend the Bloody Mary. Not overrun with vodka - not too spicy - it was just the right mixture of both. read more

We used to frequent this place at least twice a month since we tried it sometime in early 2012. The food was good home cooking, good price and good atmosphere. Worth the 20 mile drive from our house in south Mckinney. Thought it was great and recommended it to others. Unfortunately due to an accident and recovery period we were unable to get back there from September 2013 until February 2014. Something changed, I ordered the meatloaf and it was not the same as i had numerous times before. I also noticed the prices went up. I haven't gone back since until tonight. We actually went to the BBQ place next door to try it out but turned out to be closed on Sunday evenings. So since we were already in Anna we gave Crows another shot. Definitely not a fluke last time we ate there. I started with a cup of the chicken and dumplings, no dumplings. I had the Crows toes entree they had no flavor whatsoever, the gravy was good, the portion of green beans was so small in a little bowl and my squash casserole somehow had a french fry in the middle of it. I am not sure but i think the prices were up again. Ice tea was $1.95. My wife just had a bowl of chicken and dumplings and she said not really any dumplings either. Also we were not offered corn bread or rolls. Either no longer serving or the waitress just didn't offer any. I don't know why this place has changed, maybe patrons have another choice with BBQ next door and they need to make up for lost sales. All I can say is that its not what it used to be. I gave it two stars because I still like the atmosphere of the place just not enough to want to go back anymore. read more

We met here today for my dad's birthday lunch. It was about halfway between us and seemed like a good bet. It was. Everything was great. We had, between us, Chicken Fried Steak with sides, CFS Sandwich, Chicken Salad Sandwich and a bowl of baked potato soup. All were delicious and the service was excellent. Great Southern Cooking!!! Their Sunday brunch is consistently wonderful, my wife keeps telling me she'd like to be a waitress there just for a month so she can watch and learn how they cook some of their tasty food! The Squash Casserole and chicken fingers are favorites. We go several times a month after church on Sunday and have never been disappointed. It's always busy and we see a lot of the same faces every time, the service is excellent and the restaurant and facilities are always clean. The salads, fruits are always fresh and crisp. I've seen other not so favorable reviews and can't understand why they aren't better. We've been going there 2 - 3 times a month for over a year and have never eaten any dish that wasn't great. read more

Lunch CFS with a couple sides and a sweet tea. $11 bucks. Normally spend $10 on lunch so this was reasonable price. Food was okay for lunch menu. Waitress could have been more attentive with drink refills. The people in my party who was drinking soda never got a refill. Lucky for me I had tea and there was a pitcher close by so it was convenient for my one and only refill. We really like dining there and enjoy pick-up too. Tonight we ordered fried catfish dinners with different sides to go. Unfortunately, we got identical dinners. This has happened before. The girl taking the phone order talks too fast, doesn't listen well (obviously) and interrupts frequently. Please give her better trying. The food was great, prepared on time and still hot when we got it home. The green beans were cooked perfectly, but the lack of seasoning (bacon grease, onion, salt) were missed. I love coming here with my family! The waitress are always so friendly and go above and beyond. Some of my favorite dishes I like to eat...the grilled shrimp(I get it with fried okra and green beans), all of the salads are awesome as well as the catfish. I saw this place a few weeks ago when I was in town. I was in the area today by myself and thought I would check it out. A nice looking county cafe. Very clean place and very friendly service. They have a nice lunch menu so I tried the County Salad. A good choice. So, I had a very good salad and Iced tea for less than $10 before tip. Pretty good deal! I wish I had discovered this place sooner. We are moving out of the area very soon and this will be a bit of a drive for us. If we were staying I would be sure to return and check out their dinners. Consistently friendly service and great food! We eat at Crow's once a week. The catfish is great and the Pot Roast is yummy!

The food is ok. The service is fine. I've had the catfish 3 times. Once it was not fully cooked but it always tastes like it's missing something. I smother it in Louisiana Hot Sauce to compensate. They have a long specials board at the host counter but I never have time to read more than a line or two before I get seated and end up ordering off the menu instead. Overall it's kind-of your typical greasy spoon cafe. read more

I ordered the double patty hamburger. The fries were good but because they were real strips of potatoes! REALLY miss that now days. The people were very kind but, I gotta say, that was the WORST tasting patty I've ever tried. I thought it was a burnt edge. I turned it around and tried again. Horrible. It was burnt, charred, meat of some kind but it didn't go far past my lips. I LOATHE Sonic almost as much as McDonald's. I gave up that $10 and went to sonic for a proper crappy burger. Chicken strips are so authentic and fresh made, mashed potatoes are real potatoes, and the gravy is delish. They have a buffet once a week too and it's amazing. My wife and I recently moved from Orange County, CA near the beach and are used to everything from In & Out to high end eateries. As such, living in Van Alstyne, we have been trying different restaurants from Sherman to McKinney/Plano areas. After a 5K in Van Alstyne on a Sunday, some friends told us about Crows for brunch. We had not heard of it before but decided to try it. Wow, were we pleasantly surprised. The service, although crowded was great and totally friendly, the food was awesome, and the gentleman cooking the omelets and french toast is my new best friend. We went the next night to see how the daily service was, and were again not disappointed. I wanted a chile size which is not on the menu, but the server told the cook what I wanted, and sure enough they modified my order and it was great. We have been there about once a week since discovering this great place. We want to go back when they have some live music. Also going to ask them for some Negra Modelo or Bohemia beer as well. I have to be honest, I am glad In & Out opened in Texas. read more

Crows is well known for their chicken fried steak! Yesterday I ordered take out for my wife and I. Folks this was the worst chicken fried steak I have ever put in my mouth! The steak was burnt all the way threw, now as I write this review I'm pretty sure it was the same way the last time I ate at Establishment. The mashed potato's were more like a baked potato. Would I recommend this restaurant? Absolutely NOT! Will I ever eat at this restaurant again definitely NOT! * They put the hot chicken fried steak in a plastic takeout container and it burned right through it! I ordered the chicken fried steak with fried green tomatoes (thanks to the person who mentioned them here), squash casserole, and a cup of chicken & dumplings. Everything was so good! Good home style cooking is so hard to find, and I've found my new favorite place!!! Our waiter, Joe, was wonderful and my glass was always full. I went for the Sunday Brunch Buffet. Felt pretty under whelmed. Nothing was great, nothing was awful, except for the weird, super greasy tartar sauce. Catfish was okay, chicken fried steak looked like fried chicken, chicken strips were kind of burned. The baked squash was good, but they ran out and never replenished it. Service was as bad as everyone talks about. How hard is it to remove old plates from the table? I guess too hard. Server asked me twice about refilling my tea. "Sweet or unsweet, Brother?". Never brought me any until it was tip time. I hope you noticed your tip reflected your effort of seating me and bringing me one glass of tea, Brother, because that's all you did for me. read more
