I've been coming to crows nest for 10+ years. It was the best spot for breakfast, conversation and the amazing staff. The last handful of times I have been in, it's just awful. The staff is rude, forgetful and just plain oblivious. Constantly having to ask for this and that. Orders incorrect and basically begging for service. I just sat next to a table that had to ask for a waitress 3 times. Finally, the gentleman got up from the table and stopped someone for service. Now before we all call me a Karen, I too am in the service industry and understand that life has been tough the last few years. I believe the new ownership plays a huge part in the way the business is running. Just sad to see such a Kalamazoo staple, not at its best and having an issue every time. I highly recommend going with a breakfast sandwich. The Davidstown Freighter to be exact. They make all their bread homemade and in house. We bought a loaf to take home. The half order of Biscuits and Gravy is huge and worth trying as a side. My favorite breakfast place. It's more on the expensive side so it's perfect when your parents come to visit you and you can get them to pay. My favorite dish was the shakshouka but it sadly was removed. Now I always get the captains ration omelette. So seasoned and delicious and the sauce served with it is super good. Breakfast potatoes are also seasoned very well and delicious. The breakfast burrito is also a great choice. Never have had anything bad off of the menu. Cute & homey feeling restaurant/cafe on top of the Fourth Coast coffee shop. I made a pit stop in Kalamazoo on my way back from Detroit to stretch my legs and grab a quick bite to eat. For a late morning on a Friday, Crow's Nest was bumping and the hostess told me it'd be about 25 minute for a table for myself. Luckily I decided to kick it in the coffee shop and look at emails for a bit and didn't end up waiting more than 10 minutes. Crow's Nest is located upstairs and has pretty limited space yet they make the most out of what they've got. Once seated the hostess was super friendly and even suggested a few items she liked. I ended up going for the Davidstown Freighter Sandwich ~ fried eggs, prosciutto, goat cheese, sautéed onion, spinach, tomato, red pepper aioli, sourdough bread, and opted for a side of their homestyle potatoes. Sandwich was delicious and large in portion. Ended up taking the second half of it home and finished off all of the well seasoned potatoes. While there's plenty of 5 star reviews on this one, I have to say I was waiting quite awhile for my actual waitress to come around to my table. I guess understandable when it's super busy, but luckily the hostess that seated me noticed and went to fetch my waitress. I've lived in Kalamazoo for over 7 years now and there are many breakfast places that have popped up over the past few years but none compare. I have tried a few things on the menu and have stuck with a few favorites. My go-to's are the following: The Garden Patch Scramble with marinated chicken and spinach added. The Sleeping Bear Omelet sub goat cheese for the blue cheese. The Breakfast Burrito The Breakfast BLT Any of the Benedict's If you like sweet breakfast, their homemade breads made as French Toast are the most rich, indulgent and dense (but delicious) around. I'm not much of a sweet breakfast kinda gal but very yummy! Their fruit cups are amazing, their potatoes are delicious and their smoothies are a muuuust! The reason I'm just now writing a review is because a friend and I went this morning (on a Saturday), got pretty much right in and ordered (unheard of, we just got lucky), got delivered our food within 10 minutes it seemed and had constant refills on my water (I'm pregnant, so at least 4 refills) and her coffee. They have a very chill relaxed atmosphere with local artists work hanging on the walls for sale. I ordered the garden patch scramble for my breakfast. Driving by from Detroit to Chicago, Kalamazoo is a natural stop for a decent lunch or dinner. Based on the +500 reviews with an almost perfect rating, we decided to check out Crow's Nest for a late lunch. Downstairs is their cafe and bakery. Small kitchen mixing dough and an opportunity to bring home some fresh bread! I ordered Reuben, big thick slices of pastrami, tumeric covered sauerkraut on a nicely textured rye bread. Toasted and served with sweet potato waffle fries with a choice of dipping sauces. The red pepper chipotle aioli is super tasty, but I really liked the walnut pesto despite the "leafiness" my server warned me about. A good sandwich is made out of very good ingredients. Simple, but executed in a elegant way. Food prices include taxes too. So easy, so good, everything from their fries to bread, vegan options and pricing is excellent. The Good: It is a cute little place and the staff was polite, but not too friendly. When I arrived, there were a few tables seated and just had to wait 10 minutes (there was one larger party that was waiting to be seated). Our order was taken in a reasonable time. The Bad: After we waited for what seemed to be a long time for our food, the waitress come over empty handed and very casually told us that she was sorry but she accidentally gave our food to another table and our food was being made now. Wait! What! Who does that? Now, by this time the place had filled up more. Which meant, we ended up waiting what seemed much longer again. The food was tasty, but definitely not worth that wait. After we got our food, she only came by once more. I don't know if this is typical of this place, or just that waitress, but I have no intention on returning. I get things happen and mistakes are made, but you step up the service, or offer something to make up for the mistake. None of that happened here. Very disappointing experience.
