A super little shop, just across the street from the massive Castillo San Marcos, you can't miss it. Take your time and sit outside where you can see the fort and suck down some of their free wifi while you drink your (excellent) latte or cappuccino. It's an interesting little structure and I'm surprised that it's still standing. It really looks like the house of sticks that the first of the three pigs built. :) Parking is available across the way at the fort or at one of the meters nearby. Skip the chain coffee shop and support a local business! read more

The customer service is terrible!!! The lady at the counter apparently can't multi task or doesn't want to work. When I ordered more than two cups of coffee the lady's response was actually, "Please I prefer you don't because it's overwhelming". "It's too much work" The order was actually just 4 small cups of flavored coffee. I have never been told not to order something because the business didn't want to work. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. I'm normally not a hard critic, but this left me speechless!! Basically don't order too much!! Anything over 2 cups of coffee is too much for this place. Honestly one of the best lattes I had on my week-long vacay! Iced vanilla latte with oat milk for the win! Also one of the coolest spots to take a break from the beaming sun while doing self-guided walking tours in St. Aug. it's literally a wooden shack with no AC (that I could tell) but who cares? Coffee was delicious and the perfect pick-me-up! read more

We enjoyed this spot! It's super cute with a good view of the fort and a pianist was playing Mamma Mia outside when we walked up. My girlfriend and I each got hot lattes with almond milk which were very good. The staff was more than helpful and the barista pointed us toward a restroom when they didn't have one. Overall great experience! read more

After finishing a museum tour we were craving some iced coffee! This place was so cute from the start! A hole in the wall kind of place and it has its own little garden which looks very cute. The woman that rang us up told us this used to be a blacksmith store (interesting fact huh!) and she was very sweet. read more

Really cute little coffee shop in St. Augustine historic district. They have an extremely cute garden space to drink your coffee and get some cute pictures. Crucial Coffee also has an impressive flavor selection to choose from, I would love to go back and try some more. Oh, and they have pumpkin spice in August!!!! I'm a sucker for a good coffee shop and this one was such a cute place. Very unique and the service was friendly! The majority of the seating is in the courtyard but I went in the evening and there was a pianist performing and singing which made enjoying my drink even better. read more

Why 5 stars? Because this was an absolute home run. --- --- --- Oh the things to love about Crucial Coffee Cafe: 1) This business operates out of a wooden shack, smaller than the closest of some people's master bedroom. 2) There are about a million different concoctions of flavors of coffee. 3) In addition to coffee, they serve hot chocolate and bubble tea - also with about a million different flavor varieties. I originally anticipated my list to be longer than 3 things, but really, how much goodness can you fit in like 300 square feet? If I named every flavor available, this review could go on for a while. Instead, just check out the Yelp photos - you'll find a couple menus in there. But just to highlight a few of the hot chocolates available: banana split, chocolate covered strawberry, buttercream, gingersnap, butterscoth bliss. Are you kidding me with this? I want to bathe in that menu. read more

Adore. So much personality. It's a relax spot, not a work spot as the don't have seating inside only on the porch - but it's an adorable garden porch to sit back and kick your feet up on. Saint Augustine, you are so friggin' lovely and this tiny little coffee house is more proof in the puddin'! It's a tiny wooden house that serves up delicious, fun flavored coffee and tea! They have sweets too that look like they are to die for but I have only had their coffee the handful of times I have been. I splurged and went with the Snickers Cappuccino on one visit and the Milky Way Mocha on another and each was a taste bud changing experience. Yes, it's more than your regular caffeine intake, it's more of an indulgence but I loved every second of it. The staff is pretty friendly too and they have some fun little trinkets for sale. This place is really cute if you are looking for a unique coffee and ice cream joint! My aunt and I were moving my cousin into Flagler and decided to explore some of the local shops in the late afternoon. The heat was unbearable at times so we opted to grab something frozen. I had the frozen cappuccino and she ordered a coffee ice cream cone. While both were delicious, neither was a great choice for the heat and humidity. The drink was cold but very sweet for my taste and did not sit well in combination with the heat. The ice cream was delicious but naturally melted before even enjoying it. Be sure to ask for a bowl, even if you get a cone, or you will end up wearing most of it! There were only a couple of people ahead of us. It is not rapid service and the staff do tend to take their time with orders, but I it's definitely worth the wait! read more

This place is quaint, hip, and fun. Not as fast-paced as a Starbucks, but then again, what would you expect from a coffee shack? We had great service, in contrast to other reviews I've seen on here. I wasn't very impressed with this establishment - it's very cute and has a nice outdoor seating area, but the coffee drink I ordered was overpriced and incredibly sweet, despite ordering half the flavor shot. When they tell you the cappacinno tastes like a Snickers bar, they aren't kidding! We have been to this place several times during our visits to Old St. Augustine and it has always hit the spot. We go over Christmas break and this is one of the only establishments open Christmas Day. They have an extremely eclectic selection of hot and cold beverages. They have several specialty teas made from fresh herbs. I have enjoyed everything that we've ordered that I knew what it was. I say this because I ordered bubble tea with an idea that it would be something different, but no clue just how different this would be. It was so strange to me that we looked up this specialty tea. When I asked my brother, who has been to Thailand, he said what I described was the exact description of the perfect bubble tea. So if you are looking for such a drink, search no further! read more

This place is an adorable little house on a main street in the old town area. It can easily be missed, so pay attention. They make the best coffee I have ever had. I am not a big milk fan, but I tried the snickers cappuccino and it was so delicious that I not only finished the large size, but then went back for a second after my breakfast at the Blue Hen. This was seriously the best coffee I have ever had. EF Starbucks. Go have real coffee made by a real person at Crucial Coffee. Take some pictures, enjoy the little trinkets, and have a REAL St Augustine Morning. read more

The coffee is pretty good and the location is really freaking cool!!! I mean, it's probably the coolest coffee shop I have ever visited. Crucial is in a shack right across from the Fort in Saint Augustine. It's just a small shack and inside there is only room for sugar and a few souvenir mugs. Seating is all outdoors and it's really awesome, too! The seating area is actually quite large and I love to sit and watch people go by, watch the morning sun rise, enjoy the early morning dew, and relax before the real Florida heat comes later in the day. I'm a coffee purist and only get espresso-based drinks without flavors. Crucial pushed flavors pretty hard when I ordered, so I assume that a lot of syrup lovers frequent this place. I mention this because I was pleased with their basic espresso brew. It was quite good. And I think that says it all about a coffee shop--if they can pull a good espresso then they are okay in my book. 5 stars. read more

It's a wooden blacksmith shop from the 1800s (a reconstruction that was built in the 1960s) in a patio with outdoor seating across the street from a castle (Castillo de San Marcos) from the 1600s. It's like a picturesque cut-out from a pop-up book. In the patio, locals and tourists alike are partial to donning their pastel-colored vernal equinox best and taking spring time family photos with their rabbit-costumed pugs. The patio is shared with Gourmet Hut, which is where they sell food (same company). If you go on a holiday, you might catch a musician playing in the patio. Call in advance to make sure. There is free Wi-Fi and the employees don't mind if you hang out with your laptop in the patio all day long. The building is cozy, with cute tea pots for sale and your supplies (sugar, napkins, etc.) in the fireplace. NOTES ON THE LACK OF A/C: The employees will turn on sprinklers for you so you can beat the heat. They've always done if for me without my asking, but don't be afraid to ask them to turn the sprinklers on. Chances are they walk to get a little wet too. As for the building itself, it has a widow on its side and there is no glass in the window, so the breeze comes through the middle of the building. Those are traditional Spanish architectural elements for keeping a building cool. Anyone who thinks the building is hot must not be used to typical Florida weather. Typical Florida weather of course being 85°F-95°F, very dry, and extremely humid. WHAT I'VE TRIED THERE: passion fruit smoothies with tapioca boba, guava smoothies with tapioca boba, mango smoothies with tapioca boba, pecan pie cheesecake, and pumpkin-caramel cheesecake. All are great; and my friend, who is an East Asian Studies major and knows her authentic boba, agrees. read more

This place is so funky and cool, I could just propose marriage to it. On our way back from a cruise leaving from Port Canaveral, we were dying for a caffeine fix. Crucial Coffee was a bit off our path, but I saw the reviews on Yelp and just knew it would be worth it. I wasn't disappointed. The coffee drinks are fabulous. I had an iced mocha and it was sweet and strong, just like I like it. There's also a splendid assortment of home-baked goods: massive, ooey-gooey muffins and pastries and cookies and biscotti, oh, my! There is some seating inside, but also a really cool sort of patio area out back. It almost looks like some nice, young stoner's backyard and has the same, hip, relaxed feel. And, being situated right near the coast and downtown and all of the historical attractions in St. Augustine, it's simply perfect for those balmy, breezy days. I'm pretty sure the wifi's free, but you need a login. If I lived closer, I'd absolutely be a regular. read more

This adorable little coffee shop immediately caught my attention on that cold, foggy, muggy St. Augustine day. I needed some warmth and I needed it ASAP. Crucial Coffee is tiny but adorable, charming, and warm. After waiting in a long line for a short amount of time (yay for quick service), I ordered my Snickers hot chocolate. The staff was great at helping me decide on what type of hot chocolate to get. They quickly made it, yet it looked SO beautiful. Best-looking hot chocolate I've ever seen. The hot chocolate was pretty good. I didn't think it was anything out of this world but it was still solid. I felt that perhaps it was missing a little something. It was a bit expensive but I didn't mind. Although I didn't think it was amazing, I would still highly recommend it. Give it a try! read more

Adorable place but that's about it! Agree about TERRIBLE service and not really wanting to accommodate/serve customers. Man behind counter seemed to actually like to tell me no. Wasn't even apologetic, just like no no no. Ordered smoothie with 3 types of fruit and was told "no". Then tried to pay for extra items--again, "no". Then, it was so disgustingly sweet, it was not drinkable. Luckily, ordered just one to test before ordering second and so glad I did . When I then tried to modify so I could get second one that was not like drinking cup of sugar, more no, no, no. Server, or more like jerky man behind counter who gets off on the word no, said it needs the mango syrup or whatever it was to add liquid. How about water?? Finally he would have made for me but I was just like "no". I mean he showed me the ropes there. read more

So I'm feeling confused because this place gets such good reviews! Maybe it is due to the kitschy unique (but freezing) atmosphere, but it certainly isn't due to the customer service...HOLY CRAP. So the lady at the counter was totally rude. My boyfriend asked a typical touristy question, "what do you do really well here, or something I must try?", and the lady gave him the NASTIEST look and said "I don't know...*scoff*". It was very rude and confusing. Her tone the entire time was nasty. Even with a simple question such as, "is your boba tea frozen or on ice?". It was so bizarre. I finally decide on a coconut banana boba tea, and without any words she walks away...apparently to make it but she didn't bother to hear my boyfriend's order. He ended up not getting anything because how bad our experience was going. The drink was over 6 bucks, and it was terrible. The flavor of the smoothie was awful, and the tapioca pearls were the worst I've ever had. I saw her using a microwave which confused me when I ordered a frozen drink, but I guess she was microwaving the boba....GROSS. They were hard as f*ck and not even served with a big straw. I also was hoping for a pastry of some sort but there was nothing to choose from at 830am! Tragic. Seriously good luck going here. Hopefully the same woman isn't working because she clearly hates her job, and sucks at it too. read more

The coffee is good. Went up so St. Augustine this weekend and had it both Saturday night and Sunday morning. Saturday night was great! The barista on Saturday night was great! Told him to surprise me with a drink and he made me one called "Jack the Ripper" it was delish. The barista on Sunday morning wasn't as friendly. He seemed annoyed. So we just ordered and left. Didn't finish the cup of coffee. read more

Cool coffee shack in the main area of St. Augustine. We got two iced Americanos and they were excellent - perfectly crafted, delicious and flavorful without being watered down. The barista was friendly and took great care with our beverages. Not much by way of seating - they share a courtyard with an adjacent restaurant. Don't miss the papaya tree growing there. read more

This was our first stop visiting this old colonial town and was a great way to start our morning. Crucial Coffee Cafe is such a cute little cafe with little to no room in the inside- you literally order your drink and keep it pushing. But it does offer such a great experience for seating outside, it's like a secret garden from a novel. With benches, seats and even umbrellas you can sit out here rain or shine. The smoothie we ordered was very watery however the hot chocolate definitely made up for it- they offer different flavored hot chocolates and we went with a Milky Way hot chocolate! Flavor overload, it was truly amazing. It would be nice if they had more than one person taking orders and making drinks but if you opt for one of the funner flavors you won't be disappointed and the wait depending on when you get here will be worth it. And with such an elegant garden to sit and enjoy your drink this is a place you have to try. read more

Crucial Coffee is definitely a must when in St. Augustine. A Small wooden shack but with plenty on the menu. Not much room inside when full but the friendly staff are quick and keep the line moving. From coffee to ice cream, all in one place. Their cappuccino and bubble tea with fruit of choice is excellent. A generous medium size cup goes a long way. I have been here a few times to satisfy my late night coffee cravings. They are open late on weekends. read more

Have been there about 6 or 7 times and wanted to write a review every single time but by the time we return home after walking around, dinner, sight seeing etc it will be late... and if you ask me why I have gone there 7 times after each bad experience, its always been the case of out of town friends or families (or their kids) whom we accompany to St Augustine for sight seeing who pull us into that shop by the looks of it.... Long lines, very very slow staff, Over priced, bad attitude, almost always forgetting to add ice cream to a shake or milk to coffee etc. which seems to be on purpose rather than a mistake are just some of the reasons....... read more

After seeing this coffee shop from the outside I knew I had to check it out. Crucial Coffee Cafe is located right in the heart of the historic area of St. Augustine Beach. Shown below is a summary of my favorite things about this coffee shop. AMBIANCE (5/5): This rustic feel of the indoor & outdoor area of this coffee shop is tough to beat. If you are looking for a pre-dinner coffee stop while on a date, this is the place to go. SERVICE (2/5): Both barisitas I dealt with were very short and did not give helpful answers upon the asking of recommendations. Thankfully the coffee is good or I would not be returning here. PRICE (3/5): The drinks here are pretty expensive when compared to other local coffee shops but still within the reasonable price range for craft coffee. COFFEE (4/5): The coffee here was very good. I would recommend trying one of their specialty drinks rather than their black coffee. The expresso, drip coffee, and iced coffee were pretty average whereas, their iced breve, iced chai, and thai coffee were pretty good. PASTRIES (4/5): The list of the pastries they offer changes daily so I would ask for the baristas recommendation. All in all, expect to spend about $6-10 per person here and if the weather is permitting I would sit outside. My drink recommendation is the iced breve (half sweet) with the flavor of your choosing. read more

So I've been here before & did have a good experience (granted it was 4 yrs ago), so I figured it would be a good spot to grab coffee. First thing that was a bit annoying was that I waited for 10 minutes without being acknowledged at all. I could hear someone in the back working on an order, but it is a very small place & he came close to the register twice & could visually see me. Second was they were out of ALL their smoothies & the coffee flavor I wanted. Certainly this happens, but I would recommend indicating on the sign when you're out. He was apologetic, so service was not rude by any means, just lack luster. Lastly was the actual product. By the time I received my coffee the ice was half melted & the frozen lemonade was a watery slushy at best. The flavors were fine, but I would expect more given the ratings. I went to Kookaburra the day before & would highly recommend. read more

Always love coming to this coffee shop while in Saint Augustine! Roshni was my barista (mind you it was her 3rd day in) and she had an answer for everything I asked about. I ended up telling her I was a twin mom so just make me an iced macchiato the way you think I would enjoy it! It was so good that it was gone before I got back to the main strip. I was tempted to go back and get another for the drive back to the hotel. I definitely love the coffee, but I was so impressed with the welcoming I felt when I walked in to order. I felt like I knew the barista for years, and she was so happy to be there. She literally made my coffee with love! I can't wait to go back tomorrow. read more

History

Established in 2009.

Founded by the late Wendy Relph, a beautiful, artistic South African woman who landed in St. Augustine more than 20 years ago after traveling around the world. After Wendy passed away, her son Greg and his partner Stefanie ane their five children stepped in as owner-operators to carry on her legacy at Crucial Coffee Cafe and its sister restaurant next door, The Gourmet Hut.

Meet the Business Owner: Greg M.

Crucial Coffee Cafe was founded by the late Wendy Relph, a beautiful, artistic South African woman, who landed in St. Augustine more than 20 years ago after traveling around the world. Crucial Coffee Cafe is one of those places that feels like you accidentally discovered it while wandering around St. Augustine and then immediately start wondering how many other people know about it. First, the coffee. Absolutely spot on. A beautiful brew and exactly the kind of thing you want in your hand when you're starting a day of exploring the oldest city in the country. The lattes were excellent, the people were nice, and the coffee was doing all the heavy lifting it was supposed to do. Now, the building itself is part of the experience. It's an antique shack that looks like it may have been standing there since someone first decided Florida needed a coffee shop. Quaint, quirky, and definitely not your typical Starbucks-in-a-strip-mall experience. The business can be a little confusing because they offer coffee specialties, but also beer and wine. So depending on what time of day you visit, you can either caffeinate yourself for an adventure or sit back and let the day take a slightly different turn. Here's the move: order your coffee, walk outside, and grab a seat. Across the street, you've got a view of the river. A great cup of coffee, a historic setting, and water views while you wake up? They roast their own beans and have bags available to purchase plus some swag and mugs I really like the decor and seating options epically the patio. The pink pool table is a nice touch.
