Just an update to say two years later, this place still sucks. Their posted hours said they were open until 11pm. I walked in just before 10pm, asking if they were open (it WAS dimly lit inside), given their doors were still open and their open sign was still out. I just wanted some hot tea. The guy behind the counter literally replied with "what do you think?" What I should have replied with was "good to know this place is still the worst" and left. read more

This place is crazy unique making it so authentic and so St. Augustine.. it's a tiny one room building chocked full of oddities from who knows where. Best sign "this salad tastes like I want to be fat." LOL - My snicker latte (which is an iced drink) was wonderful and not sickeningly sweet like so many are (Starbucks). It appears to be a tiny little wooden shack (which it is) but it's really a lot more. We stopped in for some "refueling" after a day walking around the district, and we all ordered up a little something.... I went for a dirty chai. It was good, and as we eyed some of the cute things in the shop as we waited, when we walked out, there was a big surprise! A huge outdoor seating area, surrounded by plants, tables, umbrellas and awesomeness, if you needed a break from walking around to sip it up. It's right on the corner, so you can grab a quick drink, and continue on with your site seeing, shopping, etc. read more

The coffee at this place is like crack to me. Crucial Coffee is the crowned jewel of what Lena C. and I have termed 'Fatty's Row'. I cannot be in St. Augustine without making a trip (or several) to CC. Their menu is extensive with lots of options for flavors and concoctions, and I especially like that they will customize anything for you. Sure, it takes a little longer to get your fix, but that's bc each cup is made with TLC (I have seen the barista put aside a drink he made to REMAKE it for me bc he wasn't happy with how it came out!) and TOTALLY worth the wait. However, I'm rating this place a little lower because of the service. I did hear the "barista" say it it was only her second day working hear, but how could she not be trained when left alone to run the place?! I ordered the Snickers cappucino - no flavor at all. Maybe a tiny bit of coffee in the steamed milk, that's it. My daughter got the hot chocolate - it also just tasted like steamed milk with w the tiniest bit of dark chocolate, no sweet at all, even the whipped cream couldn't help it. The WAY overpriced cookies were good, but not worth almost $4 for two tiny cookies. At last we got to enjoy the little garden seating area, but not sure it was worth over $16 just to sit there. read more

I had a major hankerin' for some iced coffee on a recent visit to St. Augustine. Needless to say, I was thrilled to stumble upon Crucial Coffee Café. My husband and I were both impressed with the fun décor. The service was friendly and there were many options to choose from. I opted for old faithful (iced coffee) and my husband got a black coffee. We both enjoyed our cups and they packed a punch! Good coffee is sometimes hard to find and I'm glad I was able to find this little gem when it was most needed! read more

I ducked into this place on a rainy and chilly midweek night as I was making my way out of town. I had passed it before but never seemed to find the time to go in. I needed coffee to warm me up and for the drive home. Walking into the tiny shop took me back home with the smell of spices and cloves filling the air. The coffee was definitively better than what I was expecting. It was not watered down, full of flavore, bold, and delicious. I also opted for a hand sized thick chocolate chip cookie. Although it was soft (and I am not a fan of soft cookies ) it was very enjoyable. Really cool little place with an amazing outdoor garden/seating area. We got there right after opening and were the only ones there. The person at the counter was a little aloof, but I think that was because he was busy with his opening duties when we arrived. He was friendly enough and polite, just clearly preoccupied with his other tasks. He attended us and prepared our order quickly, then got back to what he was doing. Yikes. I should have paid better attention to the reviews. Yes, this place is cute and fun. No, the drinks do not taste good. Period. Also I must have had the spaciest server ever because I ordered by drink (a decaf something something with mocha). She turned to make it, then after a couple of minutes, she turned around and said, "Wait, what did you order again?" So I repeated it, and she got to work. When she put the cup in front of me and said, "here you go!" I asked, just to be safe, "This is decaf, right?" Blank stare. "Oh. Oops! Let me make you a new one." More than 10 minutes later I had my drink, and it tasted like dirt. I threw it away. Points for being different and a neat place to stop, but my drink and my husband's were literally undrinkable. *They did have some baked goods/sweets in the case that looked good but we didn't try. An actual shack right next to the fort in St. Augustine, has the best coffee in the area. I have no idea how long this place has been here, but I hope it remains here for my future visits to the area. Getting coffee here is not a fast process, but why would it be? The whole set up seems to be relaxed and friendly. The people behind the counter are chatty, and willing to tell you that they think you would like a different coffee drink more than the one you already ordered. And yes, I did like the suggested coffee more than what I had originally ordered. Outside are benches and chairs to lounge in while drinking your coffee, or also enjoying the food from next door at the Gourmet Hut. Note if you order food at the Gourmet Hut, you get your drinks here, and vice versa. The Shack is also located right next to all of the walking areas of town, and though across from the Fort, you CANNOT take your coffee into the fort. read more

The little town of St. Augustine isn't exactly overflowing with coffee joints, which might make it easy for a little spot like Crucial Coffee to pass off lackluster lattes and crappy frappes to the hordes of caffeine-starved tourists. Instead, it's pride and perfection all the way, from the choice of their beans to their precision drink crafting. The Crucial Coffee Cafe is not easy to find the first time you go looking, but it's worth the hunt. What a surprise to find this little wooden shack, which doesn't look like much from the outside, on the corner of Charlotte and Cuna (Cuna St between A1A and trendy St. George). The building is literally leaning to one side, but that doesn't keep what's inside from blowing your mind. Here you'll find some of the finest desserts and coffee going. First, the owners are clearly picky about their beans, which they import specifically for Crucial and which really do make some of the smoothest coffee I've had. And I've had some coffee. Try the "Frozen" Iced Coffee on a typical hot day, or give the Salted Caramel Latte a shot early in the morning before temperatures rise too high. The freshly brewed iced tea is a great cooler for non-coffee drinkers. My sense is that the young and hip staff will go out of their way to make the drink you want, and do it well. Desserts, all made on site by baker/barista Gabriel and other members of the morning crew, are a point of pride for little Crucial. Though we didn't partake, on the morning I visited he'd just popped cookie brownies dusted with powdered sugar out of the oven. The aroma was enough to know that I was missing out. While you're waiting for your drink, be sure to check out the kitschy magnets and art on offer. There's not much space inside, but Crucial Coffee is the little sister of the most fabulous Gourmet Hut. They share a peaceful and rustic garden space with tables and shade where you're free to grab a seat when Gourmet Hut isn't jammed with folks enjoying a meal. Desserts and coffee/tea beverages for Gourmet Hut come out of Crucial as well. Look for my review of Gourmet Hut for more details. As for Crucial Coffee, this place gets a rare five-star rating. Wonderful, tiny coffee stand tucked across the road from the Castillo de San Marcos (the big fort). If you walk slong Cuna St. to where it t's into A1A, Crucial Coffee is in a little old unpainted barn. We got coffee there three times last weekend and all were solid! My wife bonked after she walked a 5K over the Bridge of Lions. When I left her in a pool of sweat & sadnesses at Oglethorpe Park to go get the car, she sure looked like she needed a coffee! Crucial Coffee had been highlighted on a map by our hotel so I gave them a try for a revival coffee. A fudge latte in this case. The latte was rich and creamy with a pronounced, complex dark chocolate bitterness. I worried about bit that it was too bitter, but when handed over the coffee turned out to be a healing potion for sore feet. No other coffees exactly saved anyone's life, but they all were good. The wife got two iced coffees, and said they were honestly the best she ever had. The milk and sugar were frothed perfectly, and the coffee had a creamy mouth feel lesser baristas only dream of making. I had a brewed coffee (outstanding) and a double espresso with a flavor shot that was perfect. Perfect, damn you! The espresso had a great, creamy mouth feel and the perfect amount of sweet and peppermint. The oatmeal cookie was a breakfast unto itself, although we didn't have any other food. Where can you find a thermos with a Star Trek logo, a purse made completely of small plastic beads, and miniature cute stuffed animals? Here in this coffee place. Besides great music, there is an eclectic store filled to the brim of knick knacks guaranteed to wow kids, friends, and strangers even! One thing that I loved were those magnets that tell you what are your weaknesses by your astrological sign. Anyway, you can get a huge variety of flavored coffees here.
