Not what they used to be... I really enjoyed purchasing my sound system for my last vehicle through crutchfield.com. Now it's terrible. They used to guarantee the lowest prices. Found out I paid about 33% more for the speakers than SonicElectonix had them listed for. When I spoke to them about a price match I was told the do price match... but with a big caveat, the only price match if the manufacturer lowered the advertised price. This isn't really a price match. In order to stay in good graces as a dealer they can't sell for more than MAP or manufacturers advertised price. So first downside: no longer the best prices and they are unwilling to match or compete with better pricing. Second issue, I was told my package would arrive by a certain date so I can schedule my install. It was delayed. Asked for some help since I lost the shop deposit and my install spot... Nothing. Second downside to Crutchfield: no customer service Third issue: the forgot the speaker harnesses to use my factory wiring. Cool. One benefit Crutchfield always touts is they hook you up with everything you need... unless you want to plug in your speakers without splicing into overpriced factory wiring harnesses. And here is the final straw: I was delivered used, damaged products and an incomplete order. The amplifier was clearly used, not like open box, but used. The outer box says BEST BUY EXCLUSIVE on it. I checked the date and it's from late 2020 so about 5 years old. The speaker terminals were already stripped out and had burn mounts on the power terminal. This was clearly a used unit that somebody pulled out of their car. The amp smells like cigarettes and is missing the cover. Well... now I'm waiting for the rest of the parts and an amplifier that didn't spend the last half decade under the seat of somebody's Marlboro Mobile. I already had to push out the install date twice and lose two deposits to hold the spot. So they don't even sell quality equipment anymore. Lastly, they sent the wrong speakers. I ordered 6.5" and the sent the 5.25" version. That's an honest mistake but on top of everything they're making me wait while they investigate. So the only usable thing I received are the adapters for the speaker opening. Now I am stuck with gear I can't install or use while they investigate. I was told they should be done in the next couple days and the we can go from there?!?! We can go from there?!?! They sent the wrong stuff and I'm stuck with it until they decide I can send it back or they'll refund it. It's clear that the customer is the LAST on the priority list for these people. Hopefully they get back to me in the next few days so I don't have to start a charge back process. I highly suggest going with another company that values their customers and aren't just skating by because they've been in the industry for so long. read more

I came to Crutchfield out of desperation, but I should have gone there first. I pulled my brother's old Atari 2600 out of the attic and exhausted every option trying to get it connected. Nothing seemed to work. Well, I brought the box with the console, games, cables, etc down to Crutchfield and their eyes lit up. The staff not only heard me out as I tried to explain how I was struggling to get this 70's dinosaur hooked up to our modern television, they did research on the spot to see if we could figure it out together. One of the techs was literally on his way off-shift for the day, but he stuck around to help me out. When they couldn't find a suitable adapter in stock, the guy crimped a custom RF to coaxial cable right in front of me. On the spot. He fabricated the connection we needed from scratch, like he was pulling it out of thin air. This man is a wizard I will absolutely be back here for any audio/visual needs I have going forward. read more

I tried to buy a product and have it shipped to my APO/DPO address (embassy overseas). All these APO/DPO addresses go through Dulles for transshipment but the product is not going to Virginia. Crutchfield insisted I pay sales tax in Virginia. They do not support the military and other government officials working at embassies and military bases overseas. I think I was racially profiled by this store. Someone from there customer service called and refused me delivery and canceled my account. I know they will deny any of this but I don't think black people are acceptable here. I was told because of my returns I'm no longer welcomed. Here's the thing. You read reviews that they post. So the product sounds like a great buy. OK, you purchase it. You receive it (in my case speakers and a receiver, it didn't live up to what I thought. Now they created there return policy. Instead of warning me or advising me they straight up canceled me. I felt like because of color they refused my account. I have bought many items from this store all was well. I have spent 10s of thousands of dollars at this store having them install car audio systems in every vehicle I've owned in the past 20 years. Most recent was the install on my Hellcat Redeye which Jason did awesome before he left. So this is the first time I have ever had anything negative to say about them. This job was to install a pair of subs + amp in my new truck (pretty basic). However since Jason no longer works there (best installer I know), they told me they would not trust their inexperienced installer on such a complex job. Since when is an amp and 2 subs a complex job for a car audio installer?!? Then Jon the sales rep tells me the box I was looking at using was confusing, because the openings were 9 inches and the subs were 10. I guess he didn't realize the holes have to be smaller than the face of the sub because well you need something to be able to mount the actual subwoofer to and some boxes need to be trimmed slightly for proper fit. Simply put this experience went on for about 20 mins where Jon tapped and pranced around the obvious, they just can't handle basic installations any more since Jason left, so he essentially referred me to Charlottesville then said it didn't make sense for him to help me if they were going to do the install. I had 3 vehicles to do very basic installation jobs on that I will now be taking elsewhere. If you couldn't do the job or didn't want the job then next time just tell someone that over the phone instead of telling someone to bring your truck in and then after a 90 min drive one way, realize that you are talking to someone that doesn't even know that an opening on a speaker box must be smaller than the actual speaker. Beyond that Jon seemed overwhelmed and just cost this branch thousands of dollars in present and future projects. They can chime in and say this isn't accurate etc but I have receipts for all the business I've given them over the years and honestly Jon either couldn't handle the simple request or they have ZERO confidence in their installer to do the most basic tasks. They literally said "I wouldn't trust them on installing an amp and subs." Verdict: DO NOT GET ANY CAR INSTALLATIONS DONE AT THIS BRANCH unless they hire installation guys that can handle basic jobs! The actual manager is a good guy but considering I didn't deal with him this time it was irrelevant. Maybe they're still good at home audio but unless you're doing your own install for car audio, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! You've been warned. I didn't even waste my time talking to them about the other two projects I needed done after basically being referred elsewhere for the first one. read more

When I reported how my receiver kept cutting out and restarting, Crutchfield strung me along suggesting minor wiring fixes, rather than just admit I should return it. After I tested the power level, per their advice, and reported the precise voltage range, they should have admitted my car's power was not at fault, that the unit was unsalvageable and asked me to return it. Instead they carried on advising me to check the wiring. Two days before the warranty expired I confronted them, saying they should finally accept my return of the receiver, but I asked for only half the price as credit toward a new one. They responded the same day, saying the warranty had already expired (lie), and offered a much lower credit. After the warranty expired, they accused me of not reporting the voltage test result. It was dead simple for me to make a screen capture of the e-mails, and draw a red circle around the one where I reported this. Proving their lie should have resulted in an apology, and accepting the unit for a full refund (no longer the half price I originally asked for, because now they had called me a liar, and they were proven to be liars). If you buy online they may jerk you around on tech support until you wear out along with any warranties. They did a fantastic job installing my new car head unit, maestro (for integrating systems data and steering wheel controls), and backup camera in my 2010 Subaru. The customer service on the front end was friendly, knowledgeable and thorough, and they were very clear about the installation protocols due to COVID. After making the purchase over the phone, and understanding how install was supposed to go, when I pulled up on the designated date everything went smoothly and the car was returned almost to the minute of the estimated waiting time. I will be back next time I need anything electronic - in fact, will be calling them soon to try to match a new center channel home theater speaker to my old B&W towers. Close to 3 years later. There have been no issues with any of the speakers, the sub or the head unit. I should also mention that this is my 4x4 and it used off-road almost weekly. I don't go crazy, but there is a lot of vibration and jarring, especially during creek crossings. i don't play cd's so i have nothing add about that. I do use a usb cable for almost all of the music,and as long as i have service i have great music. I list to everything from classical to KISS, Rush, Led Zep, Joe Satriani just to name a few (i don't listen to hip hop or the opra lol) read more

Had a car stereo and backup camera installed for my wife's birthday. We went out for her birthday dinner 2 days later and the entire system blacked out. I called them since she is now driving with no radio or bluetooth for the phone. I was informed that we would have to live with it for a week and a half until they had an opening. I've been a Crutchfield customer since the 90's and I'm very disappointed that this wasn't a priority for them even though I had just spent almost $900 with them. They definitely could have done better. I'll see when they get around to fixing it 10 days from now. I will definitely go elsewhere in the future. read more

Ordered some Audioengine computer speakers from Crutchfield. The website and order process was efficient. After about 6 months I started to have issues with the speakers. I called their customer service not knowing what to expect since a significant amount of time had passed since purchase. After I walked through how I had tried to fix the issues (resetting, unplugging, etc.) he said he would immediately send me a new product. Since I live in VA it arrived the next day! I put the old product in the new box and returned the product. I was very impressed by their top notch customer service. read more

5-hour drive from NY to get a new car radio-CD player; wait from 9 AM to 7 PM. $3200 got JL Audio digital amp ($999), Pioneer controller-radio-CD ($349) front Focal speakers ($779); sound is relaxed, nuanced, detailed, nicely soundstaged. Kept old cheap rear speakers and $500 subwoofer. Installation, $550; 6-channel JL Audio amp combined all into integrated system with excellent tonal balance, wide, balanced imaging, clean highs and smooth bass. When reception is good, FM radio sounds smooth, nuanced. Turn off "Auto Eq" for clarity. I set SOURCE LEVEL ADJUSTER to -2, plus used "NATURAL EQ" at moderate level. Soundtrack from "Body Heat" (London Symph) congested, distorted, at high levels and when "Auto Eq" on. "Ray Charles Live" was clear and detailed without "Auto Eq," especially on "The Spirit Feel" and "What'd I Say." The first track, "Hot Rod," a wild and wooly version of "The Spirit Feel," was raw and transparent, and, in my first listen, 3-dimensional layered areas popped out in a round frontal soundstage of brass, drums, alto sax above around and in front of me in the seating position but not quite duplicated in a later play - psycho-atmospherics...or, ...electric glitch?...aging body, right ear plugged...plus, forgot I'd made EQ adjustments night before on CUSTOM EQ; so, LEFT CHANNEL louder; VOCAL LEAD, BASS spacier, DETAILS, CYMBALS SHIFT LEFT, LESS DISTORTION AT HIGH VOLUMES, best for "Hip-Hop" BUT, back to prior lower levels W/NATURAL EQ blackness since more pleasant - EXCEPT "BODY HEAT" CD BENEFITED GREATLY IN "CUSTOM EQ" MODE; less bloat, congestion, belching, gas..oops. High notes compressed compared to open spacious "cold" sound heard elsewhere, sense of interior space missing by compressing sweep, spray of cymbals; lack of weighty "shaking" of heavy drums which set lead rhythm forcefully in another system by comparison; BUT a lot can be said for soft "warmth" popping out from isolation in black matted background; brassy horns and reedy woodwinds which often had a special feel, like being "warm and fuzzy" on individual notes and bass, but required at times extra listening power to "see through" veils and black-wall background into recording venue for space and depth, although less tiring than hearing everything at once in more open but analytical systems. Best potential IS LARGER FOCAL speaker swapped into system, better SPEAKER POSITIONS for better imaging, depth (but high cost). Out of many adjustments in highly flexible Pioneer control unit, the most important was turning down high-pass (treble) on front and rear speakers (-5 or -10 for each). Most other adjustments, such as bass level (+6) and source level adjuster (SLA)(Set to -2) can be kept within few notches of factory settings. Doing so did not change amount of treble "air," however, even on the cymbals. But that treble "air" sparkle DID INCREASE when I re-set low-pass and high-pass cutoff filters to 50 hz. and later when I changed the "Source Level Adjuster" from -2 to -0- (TEMPORARY)(even +1 pushed treble too high and distorting). That removed what had been treble leakage through subwoofer(?), bass became sharper and deeper, highs more sparkling, and along with noticeable improvement in treble "air," CLEANER, CLEARER SHARPER HIGHS; cymbals cleaner, clearer. "Auto EQ" should be "Off" - broad bass enhancement causes distortion - set "SLA" = -2. Aforementioned adjustments made for startlingly relaxed "Frank Sinatra"s Greatest Hits" during my first listen. His voice came out of the dashboard, lips seemingly mouthing lyrics in his uniquely nuanced style directly from his throat into mine. Those adjustments also made for wide, black background that didn't produce small 3-dimensional images but soundstage itself was 3-d mass, but only when SOURCE LEVEL ADJUSTER was on "-2" (digital style vs. analog) w/ NATURAL EQ. Sitting in middle produced extremely wide, interesting soundstage (speakers on doors) with good balance. However, you can't drive that way. Blackness of backgrounds did pleasant job isolating instruments and voices, well-outlined and popping out of darkness with very soft pleasing texture of tonalities - soft brassy horns and soft reedy woodwinds. Even piano keys sounded like they had felt covers. From my triple-CD album, "Love, Peace And Folk-Rock Hits Of The 60's And 70's," "No Time" (The Guess Who), "Baby, The Rain Must Fall" (Glenn Yarbrough) and "Light My Fire" (Jose Feliciano version) were perfectly balanced and very clear, powerful and open. "Source Level Adjuster" (SLA) set to -0- from -2 had less blackness, more ambience. "Garden Party" by Rick Nelson was mellow with clear guitar plucks popping around my face and percussion weightiness seemingly part of a stage under my feet. "Ode To Billie Joe " by Bobbie Gentry was chillingly clear and present, like a scary movie inside the car. Using "Off" for time alignment; +15 (of -25 to +25) front fading bias focused image front. read more

Simply disappointed. I have done a lot of business with Crutchfield in Harrisonburg. I used to speak highly of them, and wonder if they have new management in Harrisonburg. I purchased a TV and wall mount from them in August when I hired a contractor to do some work installing a new fireplace. It has been slow going with the contract work, which they finally finished on Saturday, 3 months after it was started. As luck would have it, the bracket that I got at Crutchfield to mount the TV covered the power receptacle. So I went out on Sunday (Crutchfield is closed on Sunday and Monday) and got one that fit. I took the wall mount bracket back to Crutchfield today. They would not refund my money because it had been more that 6 days. They, instead, gave me a gift card to the $84.23. Now, in a way, I got my money. I was told that they have a better return policy than their competitors. well...I beg to differ. The only way I get my money back is to spend more money with them. They were not particularly nice during the process, and made it seem that I was being ungrateful. That is the way they treat folks that spend thousands on TVs from them. It's a metal bracket, unused, and perfectly good to sell. You used to be so much better with customers Crutchfield. read more

Cannot say enough about this company and the people who run it. We drove down to visit my girls at JMU and when we got there, my daughter's car wouldn't start. The alarm system wouldn't turn off and therefore wouldn't start. Had to have AAA tow the car to the Honda shop. The next day, I went to Honda and they couldn't do anything about it. My daughter needed her car to get to classes and to her job. Well........in comes Chris!!! Chris drove from Crutchfield to Honda, stood in the freezing rain and got the car started. Drove right to Crutchfield's where Chris was able to fix the problem. He went above and beyond!! Service was great....staff is wonderful. Chris saved our weekend !!! Can't thank him enough. We plan on making the 2 hr drive again so we can have our stereo system replaced in our other car. Well worth the drive!! Highly recommend this place :) read more

Awful support from the management and installers. They are supposed to have a customer support line, but it was not working due to too many calls. I called the store and spoke with a "master installer" that convinced me I had the right wiring harness when I knew I didn't. He told me that some of the plugs just don't get used. After he convinced me, I wasted hours of my time on the install only to find out I was right, it was the wrong part, after I called the manufacturer of the harness. When I returned it get the correct one, the manager still questioned me after I had spoken with the man who manufactures them and he told me what I needed. This was my third time exchanging the same part, and management didn't have any sympathy or offer any ways to try and fix the situation. It's a shame too. I've had good dealings with them in the past, over 8 years ago, but apparently they just don't care about customer satisfaction anymore, which is what I thought Crutchfield was built on. read more
