I really hate that this is my local grocery store. The super Foodtown on Broadway is so much better. Don't ever buy meat from this place. I have gotten chicken that smelled and felt hard. I just picked up ground turkey and it stank when I opened the package. It's not surprising when you see the boxes they stack in the meat aisle with no one around to unload it, they are clearly storing meat at improper temperatures. And good luck getting around these cramped aisles and through those minuscule checkout aisles. Report: I placed an order with Mercato because I'm currently dealing with a knee injury and can't easily shop on my own. After accidentally entering the wrong address, I reached out immediately to correct it and provided my phone number in case they needed to contact me. Despite confirming the corrected address, Mercato delivered to the wrong location twice, leaving me without my groceries. When I tried to resolve this, I was passed around between automated responses and unhelpful agents. One representative promised a refund, but nothing was done. When I followed up, a different representative hung up on me and refused to connect me with a supervisor. In the end, I had to go to my bank to dispute the charge. Mercato's lack of responsibility and empathy has left me questioning how they treat all their customers. For anyone considering this service, especially if you need reliability, please take caution. This company failed me when I needed them most. Do not use c-town's online service. Be cautious. I was out $75 for more than 2 weeks and we all know what a big impact that is in this economy. This C-town has a pretty good selection of produce, and most every other thing you're looking for. The downside? Prices. Like we're talking $9.99 for a small box of frozen mozzarella sticks expensive. Not all things are as overpriced, so it's kind of a grocery list roulette, seeing what's decently priced and what they're scalping. That said, the selection is one of the better selections for c-towns I've visited before, so if you're desperate for an item no matter the cost, they likely have it. But for stock up shopping? Go to food town or better yet over the bridge to NJ. read more

I tried purchasing some toilet paper priced at $11.99, when at checkout it rings out at 17.99... Turns out that in order to get the 11.99 price you must purchase $30 of groceries.. the fine print is in very small letters. This C town doesn't mess around. It does not abide by the hipsters moving into the area. If you need any kind of bean, they have it. street flavors of ramen? they got it. This location is a great grocery store in the neighborhood, with a place to pull up your car on the busy street outside to load it. Every time i've been in need of something whether it's produce or snacking, this location has carried it. they were the only place in the area, of all gourmet stores and any deli to have pumpkin purée! the only downfalls so far have been strange smells around the meat aisle on several occasions, and they didn't carry a certain kind of chocolate milk i was craving. This C-Town stinks. Not like "Gee it stinks they don't carry organic butter" but like "Sheew, C-Town farted." I have to walk past it since it is located right at the subway exit and often see people holding their noses...so it's not just me. But I have to admit they carry organic milk (and other healthier items) which is shocking. Sometimes they have incredible sales (suspiciously good sales). You can stock up on some dry goods as well in an emergency and come out alive on the other end. Run into this Stinky Town and get the hell out. read more

I mean, it's another C-town. There's everything you need, but it isn't the cleanest place to get your groceries. But when you're in Washington Heights, there really isn't any other option. I like buying my meats here, but their packaging seriously sucks. Whenever I pick up some chicken breast or beef stir fry, I get blood all over my hands. Seriously? Is it that hard to drain the blood and seal the styrofoam. Whatever. There was one instance when this cashier asked me where I was from. I said California, and she said, "No, where you really from?" I thought she misheard me, so I just repeated myself. She sighed and said, "No, like your parents." I said Korea and her other cashier friend proceeded to cheer loudly, boasting that she was right. No fluff. No luxe. This is your run-of-the-mill C-Town. I give it four stars because they always have everything I need, and for cheap. They have a great selection of Spanish foods and they ALWAYS have an ice cream on sale! ($2.50 1/2 Gallon of Breyers? Yes please!) The staff here is always nice and helpful, and the cashiers very beautiful. There food and product is always fresh. To start off there deli is very busy, but there service is very nice and they always show curtsy. Good luck buying there rotisserie chicken, its always sold. This tells you the deli is always having fresh product. And there not cheap with the sandwiches, they are all made with love. The produce section is also fresh everyday. And the canned products are always rotated with new dates, same goes with there busy seafood section. Just try not to go on the weekends cause the place is always packed and the lines are long. read more

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. Go to Foodtown on 160th/Bway or Gristedes at 170/Bway. I moved to the neighborhood 9 mos ago and since CTown was closest, I made this my main grocery store. I've given it a fair shot. The Deli dept journeymen are jerks. I had a line number for my turn but they kept taking Dominicans who just cruised up to the counter, talking in Spanish. Aside from the deli, I've never had a single clerk make eye contact with me, greet me, say thank you, or even acknowledge my existence. I'm white. I'm from Los Angeles where people get along no matter what race you are. It was really shocking to experience this kind of blatant racism. What a sad, backwards way to live. It's two days after Thanksgiving and the store looks like it was raided. I was looking for creamer since the shelves were empty and approached a stock clerk who was talking to another employee. I asked if he had any creamer in the back and the two just walked away, continuing their chat. I asked again, a bit louder. The girl glared at me and walked away, while the stock clerk muttered something in Spanish and went back to stocking, completely ignoring me. Pretty nervy since their meat department completely sucks and they really have nothing to offer for people who want to cook fresh foods. If you can live on boxed or frozen food and don't need customer service, this is your dump. I'll never be back to this store. Wish I could give it a zero. read more

Local market but wouldn't call it a supermarket since they only have minimal amount of items in this tiny establishment. The isle are small and narrow and it's hard to find items. The customer service definitely needs some work especially if your trying to find something and you are trying to grab the attention of the staff but they ignore you until you literally grab them to get there attention. Living in Washington Heights and expecting to find an amazing supermarket?!... Well good luck finding one. Every supermarket has it's perks, and negatives, so you kind of have to take what you get, and make the best of it! Every week they have pretty great deals, so I suggest checking their circular before you shop around, because something you might need (or might want eventually) might just be on sale! Deli: Pretty nice guys here. I haven't had an issue ordering cold cuts, and cheeses for sandwiches. They also have ham's usually on sale, or random cold cuts and cheeses. Meats: Pretty great meat! They used to sell really putrid, old meat when I first came to the area, but after giving them a second chance, I am pleased with the meats freshness! With chicken, just keep an eye out because they're pretty fatty sometimes, and you might spend a lot of time cleaning it before cooking. Dairies: If you like your coffee, the creamers here are a bit pricey. Their fridges seem to work slightly better than Associated (a block away - 161st and Broadway), so they won't go bad as soon as you buy them. Only issue I have with their products like milks, ext is that I've seen them for a fact have people not want to buy an item, leave it behind at the cash register, and then put it back in the fridges for it to be sold later again! So, they basically leave the item unrefrigerated, and then the next person who ends up with it might end up with rotten milk or a dairy product once they get home. I've gone before to ask for another creamer (due to it being rotten), and the manager said their return policy is next day return only on dairy products, and this supermarket is basically ghetto because their receipt doesn't say their return policy (or anything really), so I had no idea, and due to life getting in the way, I couldn't return it the next day. All in all, be careful with dairies, because you might end up with wasted money. Dry Items: Pretty good. Just of course, double check expiration dates. A lot of their stuff will be on sale, or will be cheaper with an X amount of purchase. Vegetables and Fruits: Pretty fresh. They seem to switch items frequently, so it is fresher in appearance. Customer Service: Eh. But then again, you can't expect much when it feels like you're living in some type of Latin America. I love Washington Heights, but sometimes the people in it are unnecessarily rude to the new people moving into the neighborhood, and this applies to C-Town. More people do speak better English here than Associated Supermarket, so you will be able to get around if you have any questions about where things are. But most cashiers (and managers) are pretty rude, so don't expect VIP treatment. BONUS TIP: There's lots of legitimate Mexican products, so if you're into Mexican taco nights, then this is great place to look! ALSO, they have Carvel Cakes, which I LOVE, so if you have a birthday or a special occasion, and are on a budget, they are in a fridge filled with Carvel Cakes right next to the cashiers! read more

I come from the suburbs of Philly, where supermarkets generally have an organic aisle, and maybe one 4-foot section of "ethnic", i.e. Hispanic, food. Here, there is an entire Goya aisle, and one little organic section, plus a little vegetarian freezer section. It will be interesting to see if these sections increase at the same rate as the white 20-somethings moving in to the neighborhood. read more

This place has been awful for years. they made a modest attempt last year to "improve" it but I still don't see much difference. And I never understand why they choose the busiest times of day (after work, Saturday mornings) to be stocking aisles as if there is no other time of the day (or, duh, late nights) to do it. All you want to do is race through with an emergency purchase but you get stuck on clogged lines and have to stare at several men who sit around trying to make you feel guilty after sacking your groceries if you don't leave alot in their tip jar. I like this C-town. I liked it better when they carried the fresh german chocolate cake I adored. But I still like it. Most employees are helpful when you need to locate an item. All the managers I've encountered have been. Some items make me go, "Really? At C-Town? Come on!" with their prices. Others, I'm like, "YES! Gimme five o' dem dere thangs!" It's relatively spacious for the area. The check out people tend to be nice. I don't have that many issues with sale items not being in the computer system. The produce is mostly fresh. The price is right and it is clean enough compared to other stores in the area. The staff is normally pretty pleasant. There is a bag check at the door though. I am not sure if that is to create space or because of theft, but it exists. Everything I have gotten here has been fresh and reasonably priced. Watch out for the ice cream though. I was trying to purchase Thomas' English Muffins. There was a big orange sticker right on the package saying "buy one get one free. " When I was at the register I noticed that both packages of muffins rang up at full price, 4.49. I asked the woman at the counter about this and she called the manager over. The manager said that they were not on sale. Then he looked at the sticker that was (again) clearly right on package and said no, they are not on sale. He then showed me a circular that said that these muffins were on sale for 2.99 each. And again, BOTH had rung up at 4.49 EACH. He then got very condescending and told me that I should "read the fine print carefully." Again, there was a sticker, right on the packages, saying buy one get one free. After a bit more arguing he said to me, "I know, little girl (I'm very clearly an adult) I know you're hungry for bread." He continued to be rude to me until I left. Honestly, I don't think he would have acted this way to me, he certainly wouldn't have been this condescending to me, if I were a man and the fact that he refused to help me, probably had something to do with the fact that I'm a woman. Why do I say this, mostly because he called me "little girl" several times while he was talking down to me. read more

The only good thing about this store is the prices. "Regular" prices are significantly lower than Foodtown or Gristedes. That having been said, everything else is bottom of the barrel. The most striking thing is the extremely RACIST and SEXIST attitudes of the staff. If you're not Dominican, don't be shocked if you're treated like a second class citizen. Clerks will pretend not to understand you if you ask questions about the products or the prices, will actually refuse to do a price check if an item rings up higher at the register than they are advertised in the store flyer (happens fairly often) or out and out ignore you and walk away while you are speaking to them. If you are waiting for the deli or the butcher, folks from the DR will walk up and get served before you, even if you have a number and they don't. On several occasions I have actually been hit on (aka, called "baby" and "honey" while male employees blatantly stare at my chest). Three words for you: GO TO FOODTOWN! The staff is clean and courteous, they have a much better selection, and much better sales. I only go to Ctown for staples because of the low regular prices, but I buy in bulk so I can go there as infrequently as possible. These people need to realize other nationalities are moving in to the neighborhood, and if they don't get with the program and quit acting like they own the place and none of the rest of us have a right to be there, soon they will be gone... and the area will be better for it. read more

At this point I only shop at C-Town if it is an emergency, and if so I will only buy dry goods. They don't sell natural or organic meat, so I can't buy meat there because what they do sell doesn't look like it has not passed any kind of inspection. I wouldn't give the meat the sell there to a dog if I had one. The produce looks like it is one day from turning brown. Even lemons and limes are hard as golf balls when you touch them. I mean, c'mon the lemons can't even be fresh? Before I found Fresh Direct and Peapod, I would have to go shopping at C-Town with a magnifying glass and inspect anything I selected to make sure it 1) didn't have a whole in it 2)wasn't close to or past the expiration date. I have had to take a loss on a multitude of spoiled, hole in the side of, or molded products because forget about trying to return or exchange. My main gripe with this particular C-Town is the lack of customer service, that is if you are not from the Dominican Republic and speak Spanish and have light skinned. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently the extreme racism that exist in the Dominican Republic against Haitians (or anyone that has African- roots) is alive and well in C-Town. The other day we were out of juice and I just didn't feel like taking the walk to Gristides which is 8 blocks away. In retrospect, I should have sucked it up and pounded the pavement. I made the mistake of going to C-Town. I picked up juice which I thoroughly inspected before getting in the line, but it was what I experienced in the line which makes the experience so disgusting. I watched as the cashier jovially exchanged pleasantries with the customer before me. She wasn't friends with this woman, but because she is Dominican she was given the star treatment. When I walked up, this woman demeanor went from pleasant and jovial, to cold and rude. She literally turned her smile into a frown. She did not look up to even give me the respect of eye contact. As she had cheerfully thanked the customer before me, there was not a thank you from this cashier, but instead a blank stare and look of disgust. This woman's attitude was not just because I didn't speak her language, or that she was having a bad day. This attitude is pervasive in this community towards dark skinned people, and it's disgusting. They need to wake up and realize that the neighborhood is becoming gentrified. Washington Heights does not belong to the Dominican people. Last time I checked this was the United States, and they cannot expect to survive the future if they continue to treat customers in this way. Leave your cultural issues aside and treat all of your customers equally and fairly. read more

This C-Town is awesome. When I first moved to the neighborhood (around the corner), they didn't have a lot the foods that I was use asked for healthier organic items, they got it.. The store hours have also increased to longer hours to accommodate the growing neighborhood.The staff is great, and the store has made great improvements. I am so grateful! The customer service is horrible. Most of the cashiers are very rude and hostile towards African Americans. I was there recently asking for charcoal and they had no ideal what I was talking about. No speak English. There seems to be the attitude that If you're not Dominican and don't speak Spanish you're treated with contempt. The last time I was there I was at the check out and one of the items i was purchasing, the price didn't come up in the scanner. The cashier hands my food item to the person on line behind me and they're having a conversation (In Spanish) about how much it cost. (SERIOUSLY?) I say to the cashier " why are you handing my food to this person and she starts yelling at me. It would be nice to be able to buy food in your own community and be treated with respect.
