    Penske Truck Rental

    (35 reviews)

(I spend about $18,000 a year in renting trucks, so I'm an expert at this stuff. "This is the…read morenice/watered down version". It would actually take a small book for me to explain the many nuances of issues I had to face and attitudes I overcame with the many different people I interacted with in this organization) - I rented a 16' box truck and drove 1 hour to client which had a load for me to haul. The client asked me to move truck closer to building, when I tried to start truck, it was completely dead. The alternator was bad, not the battery.(I am a certified mechanic) When I called for replacement vehicle, the location I rented it from made me call the 800 service number. I was on hold for 22 minutes. When he answered, he told me I could not get a truck swapped out, I must have service come see the truck. When asked how long that would be, it was 2 to 4 hours. I said that wouldn't work. He hung up on me. I called the local regional office near where I was broke down and demanded they swap trucks. The local agent close to my breakdown said no problem to swap out, but was trying to charge me their standard rates. So I called my regional sales agent who had gotten me special contract pricing due to the amount of rentals I use every year. I had to fight with both regional offices to work that out. The problem came when both the local agent and local manager promised me someone was already dispatched and on there way, and I had to call back 4 times during a 6 hour period before they finally arrived. For reference, I was exactly 2.8 miles from their office! When the truck finally arrived, they didn't have me sign any paperwork or anything. Thy guy jumped out of truck, jumped into a waiting van and split! Didn't check my driver's license to make sure it was me, or anything. This 16' box truck was newer and the trip went fine. Due to my original issues, I wanted to make sure I would not be charged any additional money since I had to wait over 8 hours for the new truck. (they actually cost me around $650 because of this issue, but I was more worried about the long term relationship with my client). The regional office that wrote my original contract had to fight with that other regional office, and after around 4 to 6 hours, they called me and told me they had finally worked it out. I was just to drive it back to my original place of rental and they would work everything else out on their end. I would not be charged for the truck. Today, which has been 24 hours since returning the truck, I get an inspection form showing around 15 to 16 points of supposed damage on the truck they swapped me out with and now I am fighting potential claims, as well as these being added to my record on their database. Which not one scratch was put on vehicle by me. I have a perfect driving record with Enterprise and Budget truck rentals over the past 12 years. The original contracting agent and I know, what they did was not put any previous markings down, and now they're trying to potentially hold me accountable for all previous damage on this vehicle. The only person in this whole scenario who was trying to help me was the original contracting agent. Everyone else had 'zero" care about taking care of me as a customer. As a small business owner and a business coach, there are just way too many red flags here and if you rent from these guys, make sure you check every single thing there is. From the document, to the truck to the entire nuance of your trip. I rent trucks from multiple other sources and I have never experienced such a degraded level of customer service in this industry. Even Uhaul which some claim to be the worse, has given me better service than this.

Came in the morning to pick up the truck, was in and out in 20 mins! Super easy, since most of the application, documentation is done online. Lovely gentlemen helped us get the truck with good functioning door, explained the rules, details! Very pleasant. These trucks are much better than other trucks, since I was doing the move myself, the trucks have all the features I needed, backup camera even. Loved it. Returned the truck the same day at fhe location and dropped the key in the drop-off box, next day I got email with final price (based on miles) and the deposit was returned on my card ($150 temp hold). Great truck, service and good people at this location.

He failed to perform his duties (after I brought the truck about 5.30pm, he disappeared from his work place till 7pm and didn't close my contract in the system before 7pm, went home, so I was charged for 1 more day, cause I got my receipt only in the morning next day). And this is despite the fact that I sat near his front desk table for an hour and a half that evening! Why? Cause he forgot how customer's car looks, and he was even unaware that his customer's vehicle was towed away from his U-Haul location!!! So my car was towed in 1 day from Uhaul while I was using their truck. Isn't it crazy??? That front desk member even refused to give me a ride a few blocks away from the Uhaul to the towing company where my car was, despite that he was in no hurry, was simply sitting and eating in his car, leaving unfinished work behind after the end of his work day. I had to get Lyft from Uhaul and pay towing company for getting my car back. Yes, and I got a ticket from police for parking on empty u-haul territory without any signs nearby. Private property??? Hey, wake up, I'm your customer, it's your problem that you have a plenty of space but no designated area for your customers! And once again, Uhaul calls police on its customers' cars and tows the customers' cars! Be aware of this part of the service. I was a customer of different Uhaul locations for several years, but I will never return again, and especially warn others. The service is significantly deteriorating. Previous time, I had to pay extra for not existing day and mileage, and they didn't accept the proof of the miles because my picture seemed blurry to them))), and they didn't accept the proof of the days I used, cause for the 1-way truck they use another measurement of a day, not like others on Earth 24 hours... You guys making everything up, creating hard times for your customers and think we won't notice and react ??? This time I got at least the reimbursement for an extra day, but my car was towed within a single day from U-Haul location, and I got a headache of getting my car back and paying extra a big for me money to towing company, and even the police ticket !!! U-Haul should cover all these expenses, not me, cause it's their shameless and vile treatment of their own clients. And it's insane!!! It feels like every time they're stealing money and deceiving customers. Just curious, how much is your share in towing company procedures? Oh yeah, and the last but not the least: uhaul has also a procrastination of updating the payment from their customers. I did a payment in early July this year, including 30$ fee for processing by Uhaul, and in the end of November I got a warning that I can't take a truck cause from their end I haven't paid them (the payment wasn't updated. Cool!!! I had to spend in the evening more than 2.5 hours trying to reach them by call, waiting for 40 min during first call, after waiting for call back for more than and hour, and again 40 min to finally get the answer that my payment was made! Bravo! Welcome everyone to Uhaul (((

I've tried UHaul (and been disappointed) due to strange fees, poor upkeep on their trucks (tires, doors, windows, you name it). I think this location is a contractor for Penske and they are really helpful and easy to deal with. Their rates were very competitive and they didn't charge extra to drop off the truck after hours. It was the first time I called a moving location and got a human voice instead of a recorded machine telling me which number to select. The man who answered was really helpful because he told me all the charges up front and was straightforward about what would incur additional fees. I'm happy I used Penske and would use them again! Maybe they were $30-40 more than UHaul, but I didn't have to deal with any of the crap that comes with using UHaul.

We picked up our truck right during a power outage right after a storm, and he was working hard to process everything by hand and make our return process on the other end as smooth as possible. He got us into our truck and patiently showed us how to use the relatively complicated trailer we had rented. The truck was literally brand new - it had less than 150 miles on the odometer. He also let us leave our car and trailer there while we packed the truck, making it much easier to maneuver through downtown D.C. We will definitely rent from Penske in the future, and this location is excellent.

However, things quickly became concerning due to a lack of communication and restricted access. I rented two units and specifically chose this facility because of the advertised 24-hour access, which was included in my agreement. Although the first month was promotional, that feature was the primary reason I signed up and would have been part of my ongoing billing. During my move-in, I was informed that one of the individuals assisting me was not allowed on the property. I immediately complied without any issue and addressed the items that had been left unsecured without any future complications from that individual and/or with personal items being left outside my unit. Later, during my scheduled move, I returned with a vehicle and a moving truck to continue unloading, only to discover that my access code did not work. I checked all emails and messages and had received no notice of any restriction. As a result, I was unable to access my unit or retrieve essential personal items needed to complete the move. The situation disrupted the process and led to the loss of valuable property. I also documented the access issue on video on my final day. After that point, communication became inconsistent. Staff appeared unable to provide clear answers and frequently deferred to management, giving the impression that there were internal restrictions on my account that were never explained to me directly. I have since terminated the agreement. This experience raises serious concerns about communication, access control, and overall management practices -- especially when customers rely on secure, consistent access to protect their belongings.

That is bill money I'm now waiting on. Moving is expensive especially across country. I shouldn't be dealing with these extra charges and getting the run around to get it resolved when it should have never happened to begin with. Riddle me this, how was the system up and running to create a new reservation but not running to pull an existing reservation?? I was worried about this from the start, it screamed RED FLAG but the manager reassured me I would not be charged yet here we are.

I was gone for about an hour and 20 minutes, driving about 5 miles. When I returned to U-Haul, I waited for about 10 minutes for someone to check the van in. They sent me away before checking the vehicle. To my surprise, I was charged for 37.1 miles although I only drove the van about 5 miles and only had it out for a bit over an hour. Either the attendant recorded the odometer number incorrectly or the van has a problem with its accuracy. A rental that was supposed to cost about $35 cost me over $90. I called the store upon seeing the receipt, and I was told that a manager would be in touch. That never happened. I called a second time and got nowhere because I had not taken pictures of the dashboard. While I accept that I should have taken lots of photos, with the high volume in Washington, DC on a Saturday afternoon, it would be logistically impossible to move even a few things, drive 37.1 miles, refill the van's fuel tank, and return the vehicle in 80 minutes. Given U-Haul's unwillingness to entertain the possibility that either someone in the office made a mistake or that there's an issue with the van, I will not return.
