I've never experienced flavors even close to Culantro. I even had to look up "How to Make Peruvian Rice." I heartily enjoyed my choice of entree (Carne a la Planche, but sneaking a few bites of my friend's choice, the special for the day, was a grand idea). Frankly I doubt you can go wrong in terms of meal choice. The rice is truly unique and the prices are pretty reasonable compared to other food options in the area. I also am the type that typically opts for "water" but their Chicha Morada really caught my eye--if you enjoy cinnamon this is quite a treat. There were several other options on the menu I wanted to try but that just means I'll have to come in next time. Parking was convenient and the service was very polite. What a great addition to the Ferndale foodie scene! You will find nothing like it in the area. Authentic, delicious Peruvian food, can't be beat! I will most likely only get takeout from the from now on. The space itself was quite cramped and it took about 25 minutes for the food to come out (we went Sunday around 6pm for dinner). 2 of us split the Aji de gallina and the 1/2 pollo and it was sooo yummy. I had never tried Peruvian cuisine before and let me tell you....I'm hooked! I ordered the shredded chicken, garlic rice, potato which was covered in a cream sauce made out of walnuts. This restaurant was not exactly what I expected, but was pleasant enough to rate 3 stars. Came in anticipating a modest, Mom-and-Pop ethnic eatery serving a new (for this area) ethnic cuisine: Peruvian. Expected several tables arranged around a dining area. Instead, upon entering, the diner sees a row of 10 or 12 booths, with a couple of tables at the front - 50 or so seats, tops. Diners place their orders at the counter, and servers then deliver the food to the table. Here was where things began to break down a bit - more on that later. First, the menu. With the website proclaiming Culantro "brings the taste of a Peruvian Polleria to your neighborhood," you would assume that chicken is featured prominently on the menu - and you would be correct. I ordered Pollo a la Brasa, which was available in quarter, half, or whole/chicken portion sizes. I got the half- chicken, which was more than enough to share. The chicken was basically breasted chicken, with no particularly unique spice profile. It came with white rice and beans, as well as a little dish of a somewhat spicy sauce - possibly aji amarillo. The sauce livened up what otherwise would have been a fairly bland dish. Tasty and satisfying, but not uniquely so. The co-diner got the Aji de Gallina, described as "a delicious Peruvian classic," and which he believed to be a chicken dish. When it arrived, he was disappointed to find that the dish consisted primarily of a cream sauce, with rice and potatoes (a somewhat over-the-top use of starches), with a half hard-boiled egg on top - removed, as he doesn't care for eggs, and maybe an ounce of chicken, if that. Luckily, my chicken dinner was ample for both of us, which helped. The servers need to either improve their ticketing system, or the place should add an expediter. Our server first brought a potato dish to our table, which I had not ordered, and it took a bit of convincing to get her to take it where it belonged . We did not get our silverware setups until we asked. Meanwhile, after arriving early to avoid long lines, we watched as booths filled, and lines formed, all the while wondering what those folks in line to order food were going to do once their food came out. Meanwhile, the 3 main components of my entree arrived at different temperatures, from hot (the beans), to lukewarm (the rice), to almost cool (the chicken). As for the co-diner: well, he had to remind our server to bring the Canario beans (Peruvian yellow beans) he had ordered. Staff were friendly and tried to accommodate, but a few ironing-out of wrinkles would help to bring this new spot to a higher level of service. Wishing them well in this. read more

I used to go to a little Peruvian restaurant in Flagstaff,Az. I was so bummed when they closed down. I LOVED their aji verde sauce. When I saw that a Peruvian restaurant near my house, I had to get there on opening day. My wife had the steak so I ordered chicken. Both were delicious and was excited to see that they had aji verde and it doesn't disappoint; fresh with a little kick. It went great with the chicken. The only downfall is that you order before you sit down and we had to get up to ask for a refill. All in all, I recommend this place as it won't be my last trip. read more

A little hidden Peruvian restaurant, 20 minutes outside outside of downtown Detroit. Big portions, fresh and tasty food, unique dishes (as Peruvian cuisine should be), free wifi, and very affordable prices. We were hanging around Detroit and just had a craving for some Peruvian food. It's disappointingly so hard to find in the Midwest... Something we never had an issue with in California. Seeing how my Peruvian grandmother came to visit, we decided to give a quick look for any nearby Peruvian spots; why not, give it a shot.  Culantro, is undoubtedly a solid restaurant I would visit again, and give an easy passing grade. I was ecstatic to speak with the owner, Betty, finding out that she is considering opening a new location in the Toledo/Perrysburg area. Fingers tightly crossed! For those who do not know, Peruvian food is superb! It should take out the long reining traditionalist French cuisine from global first place. The employees at Culantro speak Spanish, but don't fret, because if you don't, they speak English just as well.  We ordered the Lomo Saltado (chopped steak with onions, cilantro, white rice, and fries), Carne a la Plancha (a traditional South American meal loadout, steak with fries white rice and a fried egg), Empanadas, Yuca Frita (one of the best appetizers to ever order), and a lamb Seco a la Norteña dish I can't recall the name of. They were all excellent. My only complaint food wise, was that the portion for the meat is a bit low, compared to other Peruvian spots I've been to. The meat was flavorful, nicely cut, fresh, and something I take very importantly... It didn't have any unnecessary fat on it. The white rice was great (you know I love my rice), the brown beans were very similar to that of São Paulo style, and while the fries were fresh, they seemed to just be standard bag crinkle fries.  I enjoyed all the dishes we ordered, and was very filled by the time I finished my plate. The great yet scary thing of Peruvian food, is that there are so many options, you end u pleating with your eyes. Then you get the In your face feeling, where all the food infront of you makes you start sweating a bit. The Yuca Frita Just needed a side of butter to spread on it, and the empanadas were interesting. I don't know if I'd order the empanadas again, as I would have much preferred if the meat was shredded or ground beef as it typically is. Instead they were more like stew chunks, along with the black olives, onions, diced egg, etc. Also, they put a unique twist by putting sugar on top of the empanada, which leaves a good but weird doughnut taste, haha. It's not that they were bad, I just wasn't expecting them to be that way. I plan to explore the menu much more on future visits, or hopefully when they open their second (closer) location. Until then, I urge everyone to go and try some Peruvian food near them. Make sure you go with an open stomach.  Oh, and lastly, I really recommend ordering the Inca Cola and/or Chicha Morada to drink. Don't ask what the latter is until you sip it first. This place was soooo good! We stopped in and had lunch after looking for a place nearby on Yelp. The house made drink with the passion fruit and cinnamon (the name escapes me) was phenomenal. My buddy had the chef special, which was escabeche de pollo for that day. He shared, it was great! I had the pollo a la brasa and it was fantastic. I went to Culantro with my husband on a Friday evening, the one thing we did notice was that seating was going to be at a premium if you are dining in. If you arrive around 7 PM, I'd recommend carrying out. The food was fantastic, I excepted that I might have a difficult time finding an entree because I am a vegetarian, but I had three choices and ended up choosing the verde pasta (their take on a pesto spaghetti dish). While the pasta was great the yuca, plantains, black beans, and rice were the stars of the show. The yuca and plantains were lightly fried, and not greasy at all--the sauce with the yuca was lightly spicy and worked perfectly. I'm also a pretty big fan of rice and beans in general, but this rice was light and fluffy with just a slight garlic flavor which paired perfectly with the back beans that had a hint of lime. My husband enjoyed his chicken, it came with a spice verde sauce, however he said using the sauce with the chicken would be like using A1 on a good steak (completely unnecessary). We definitely will be back, and maybe next time we will have dessert too. read more

Best Peruvian!! I'm so happy to finally have an authentic Peruvian restaurant in my area. As an academic thats specialized in Latin culture for so long, I've been so glad to be back in Michigan from my time abroad and was so very happy to see Peruvian here. The seco a la norteña and ceviche are my absolute favorite and remind me of my time in Cusco. This is a small gem here in Ferndale that I'm happy to support and see thrive! This place is really yummy for lunch or brunch. We usually just get take out but the staff is really nice if you stay to eat in. My husband always gets the pan con pollo which is amazing but I usually try to get something different every time. The carne a la plancha is bomb (mainly because of the chimichurri- I would put that sauce on everything if I could) and their omelets are great if you go for brunch. It's a shame to call this place a Peruvian restaurant. I'm Peruvian and the food served at this restaurant is heavily insulting to Peruvian cuisine. No Peruvian restaurant is going to add melted cheese on top of rice, that's a Mexican thing go to Mexican town for that. No Peruvian is going to add lime to lomo saltado... you can clearly tell the chefs are Mexicans and have no idea what Peruvian cuisine is like. The rice with steak or chicken not both, the chicken sandwich, and the salad and all 3 sauces they have and yes also they sell bottles. It's home made so it doesn't last forever but a bit. read more

The lady greeting and taking the orders at the counter asked if we had been there before (we hadn't) and placed a small dish of fried plantains and another small dish of fried plantains and corn on the counter with our beverages while the credit card processed. Thinking it was part of our meals we took it all to our table. She then yells at us across the restaurant that we took food we didn't pay for and they were 3.50 each. Told her we would pay her for it but it was sat with our beverages. Looked at the printed menu and the changeable boards and the only 3.50 items were other things. Feeling a fast one we went back to the counter and told her to cancel our entrees and issue a refund and we would pay for the stale snacks. Instead she swore at me, I shouldn't have but returned the words asking for the manager. Her response was to order me from her restaurant. No refund. No food. A little bit expensive paid $50 after delivery tip and Uber fees, etc. I think base price for the chicken and sides was around $32. Although expensive for chicken I would order again. The favors are 5 stars (must get the salsa side). We shared 6 small plates between 4 people and finished everything, very filling, but the flavor profile was just great. Some spice, some savory. Blink and you'll miss it but don't miss this place. Growing up in Miami I've been exposed to all kinds of Latin cuisine my whole life. Having gone to culinary school I've been subject to great food for years. This place simply put is a gem. Chef knows his way around seasoning and with Latin food that's a must. I had been craving Peruvian Rotisserie since they're abundant in south Florida and decided to give this spot a try. It didn't disappoint. I truly consider this place a "Peruvian Coney Island" it is not authentic Peruvian food. The drink sizes change everyday... one day you'll order a "maracuya" and it will come in a small cup, other days the will hook it up in a big cup, same price. Culantro is a solid new addition to the Ferndale dining scene. It's a fast casual place which focuses on chicken with some other unique dishes. I tried the quarter pollo (chicken) and the ceviche. The ceviche was solid but was a bit tough and salty. The chicken on The other hand was great. A nice lime rub and cooked perfectly. The fries and plantains were both a bit disappointing.
