1.30.26 It's been a while since I've been over to Cumaco - which really, I should go more, they have fried sweet plantains!! We went on a Thursday night. It's just off Allisonville and 96th, with plenty of parking. We could tell right away that there was only one staff member working the register and the grill and the tables (apparently other staff had called off), so we knew there might be a little wait. He kept apologizing, but honestly it did not take that long to get our food. And the food is such a #yum! (Because of a Yelp item, I had a free Pabellon Arepa - it had a really good size portion of shredded beef, beans, cheese, and, my favorite, sweet plantains.) But outside of that, my husband was with me and we ordered more food: The Don Luis bowl (chicken fajita with rice & beans), and a side of fried yuca. We also got a side of tequenos - the delicious little fried cheese sticks wrapped in a thicker dough. Great teste of Venezuela! The staff is nice, the restaurant is well lit, clean and bright with outside seating available. The meat is always tender and juicy and the Arepas are perfectly cooked. I've driven by this place many times and always thought it looked like it would be good. Finally came in today and it is so good! The Arepas are made to order and are stuffed with meat and cheese. Honestly a great value considering how much food they stuff in there. Tried out the passion fruit juice as well and I loved it, couldn't keep my kids from drinking all of it. Okay let's just talk about the Tequenos!!! What was that!!! Warm, gooey, tasty and savory in the best possible way! Tequenos is a golden cheese stick wrapped in wheat dough. It's crisp outside and soft/gooey on the inside. Comes with a garlic sauce which tasted DIVINE! The combo was so addictive and I regretted just ordering 1 plate - it was worth so so much more! The inside of the restaurant is beautiful! Orlando, the owner was extremely kind and helpful when we were trying to decide what to get. It was our first time here and we will be back. We got the vegetarian arepa, tequeños, traditional cachapa, pabellon arepa, caballo bowl, and the parchita juice. Everything was delicious, hot, and fresh. The most popular Venezuelan food, the Arepa (sandwich), is well represented here. I can't say enough about the savory beef included in many of them. Shredded chicken is also an option though I haven't tried it. I'm always a fan of sweet plantain and, of course, seasoned black beans to add protein. Stopped by their food truck at a recent convention. Unfortunately, they were located right next to a popular food truck so the line was a bit obscured, but it was one of the quickest lines. It deserves more visibility! I got the beef bowl which came with beans, rice, plantains, and shredded beef. It took 15 minutes to get the food. This meal was filling. The beef had a rich tomato flavor. It was shredded, and it wasn't dry because of the sauce. The black beans. Well with the textures of the other items. The plantains were my favorite part because they were soft and sweet. The rice was a bit dry. Everything together made a perfect bite. It was $16. Pretty standard food truck price. The inside if bright and cheerful, with plenty of seating.. It was clean on the inside, but you coule tell it might need a little bit of cosmetic work (some chipped paint on the walls). However, that didn't stop me from wanting to dine here at all. I ordered the Catira Arepa. It contains their shredded chicken and cheese, inside of a crispy on the outside, soft on the inside area. It was steaming hot and freshly made when it came to me. The first bite gave me an immediate smile. The chicken was well seasoned, and the cheese mild and creamy- perfect filling for the arepa. Finally I decided to make it my destination and I'm so glad I did! The moment I walked in the door there was a vibrance and energy to from the music to the decor. Cumaco Arepa House - Honest Feedback with Much Respect First, I want to say how happy I am to see Cumaco grow from a small food truck into a beautiful restaurant here in Indianapolis. It's so nice to have Latin flavors available in the city, and I truly admire the dedication and hard work it takes to build something like this. I've followed Cumaco since the food truck days, and the owners have always done an incredible job preparing authentic, flavorful Venezuelan food that feels like home. Today was my first visit to the restaurant, and while I'm grateful to have this cultural space in our city, I left a bit disappointed with the flavor. I ordered the Sancocho, which was a great portion with plenty of meat and all the right ingredients. However, it was unfortunately very bland. I had to add a good amount of salt and black pepper to try to bring out some taste. The dish had everything except the seasoning.. I also tried the Cachapa with cheese and cream, with pork fried bits which was okay but again felt like it was missing that true flavor that used to stand out so much from the food truck days. I ordered a Guanábana juice as well, which I was really looking forward to, but it tasted very watered down especially at $4-$5 a glass. I was expecting a more natural, rich fruit flavor. The total for one person came to $45 before tip. I don't mind paying for good food, but when the seasoning and the authentic taste aren't there, it makes me hesitate to return. Honestly, I would much rather buy from the food truck again when the owners themselves are cooking, because that's the true taste that first won me over. That being said, I still want to support this local business and recommend others to try it for themselves. The restaurant is very clean, the atmosphere is nice, and the young lady who took care of me was friendly and professional. The service was excellent, and I really appreciated the care she showed. My only humble suggestion would be to bring back that seasoning and rich flavor to the kitchen the one that made Cumaco so special to begin with. I've been here to eat in and for take-out a time or two. This time, I went in to order take-out wanting to make sure to support this local business during a lot of road, parking lot, and nearby construction (Sept 2023) which has lasted an interminable amount of time... and continues today with their parking lot still torn up after a year and the apartment city next door. But I digress. The place was empty at lunchtime. Empty. I ordered at the register with someone who pantomimed that she spoke almost no English, so she could not answer a couple questions I had about ingredients. No big deal, and my order turned out fine from that standpoint. But my beef (no pun intended) is that I waited for 33 minutes for my order. I ordered pabellon arepa, a core menu item, and got it a la carte. I could hear a man shouting in the back from time to time like something was happening. but it really wasn't. No one came to tell me it would take a long time or that there was a problem. Honestly, had I not already paid for it, I would have walked out. The food was good when I got it. In fact, they are consistently good. But that was an excessive time to wait for what is convenience food with no reason made known to me or apologies for the wait. I love arepa and wonder how they are surviving in that location, but they've made me think twice about stopping in again ever since. read more

Our family of 4 ordered the sampler appetizer to try a variety - the yucca fries and taquenos were very good. The mini fried arepas were also good although the beef one was tad salty. The pollo arepa was better. The sauces that came were pretty good as well. Our favorite was the garlic one. We ordered pabellon arepa and the llanera arepa. The order for pabellon arepa came soon enough and my husband liked it, but the order for llarna took very long. The Llanera came with a lot of steak and good sauce, however quite a few pieces of meat were chewy/overcooked. We had to take out the chewy pieces of meat as such. After trying the tequeños here as part of a Yelp event, I had to come back for a full meal. The tequeños are truly the best things you'll ever eat. They're fried cheese sticks, but with a special Venezuelan cheese that's a bit more salty and firm. The dipping sauce that comes with them is this light cilantro sauce that I could seriously drink. It's maybe my favorite sauce that I've ever tried. This time around, I ordered the pabellón bowl, which consists of white rice, black beans, sweet fried plantains, and shredded beef. I also asked for avocado as an add-on. It was delicious and I can't wait to come back for it. You can also get the pabellón arepa, which is the same ingredients but in an arepa (sandwich-style). If you haven't tried an arepa, it's essentially a pancake made of cornmeal. It has a subtle flavor and goes with just about anything. The owners are SO sweet, passionate, and hardworking. This spot opened around the time the pandemic hit, but they're still crushing it because of how much the locals like them. If you haven't tried Venezuelan food before, this is your perfect gateway. Everyone I've brought here LOVES it. They have a big outdoor patio as well as indoor seating. There's a free parking lot out front and when you walk in, you'll order at the counter. Holy hell: The tequenos are outta sight and you need to eat them right now. They are like the best mozzarella sticks you've ever had, except they taste even better than that and are wrapped in what tastes like a pastry crust, and have tender cheese inside. Couple the tequenos with the sauce they add to your order, and you're all set. You have a satisfying Venezuelan snack or mini meal. I also got the pabellon arepa, which came with shredded beef, black beans, fried plantains and queso. It was very big and tasty, and I couldn't eat it all after eating my order of tequenos. It was very nicely prepared and presented, even though I ordered my arepa to go. The people in the kitchen really put some thought into the presentation. Attended the Elite event and enjoyed the Tequenos that tasted like a fresh, delicious cheese stick it wrapped in softer dough. I only had 1 because my children attacked them in the back seat on the way home. Definitely kid approved! We ordered additional items off the menu because it smelled so good inside! My husband ordered the Pabellon Arepa. It was shredded pork, black beans, and a plantain wrapped in a doughy tortilla wrap and my husband couldn't stop eating it... I salvaged a bite and it was delicious. I ordered a vegan arepa which had black beans, plantain, and avocado- everything I need to have a tasty dinner, however, the beans did need to be drained bc my arepa fell apart from the liquid and had to eat with a fork since I couldn't pick it up. I think the cheese tequeños are the way to go! They are good and very cravable. We also got the pollo arepa. It was overflowing with chicken. I had some pico at home, that coupled with it. Otherwise the chicken and cheese could be a bit salty. I also got the soup, which is only avail on Sundays. It was very authentic. There was meat with cartilage, plantains and a little bit of everything in there. I would not personally grab it again. I want to do the empanadas next time. The restaurant is on the corner of 96th and Allisonville and is a bit of a pain if you have to do a u-turn. But well worth it. The restaurant is super cute, big patio, good service. Tasty food! Another Venezuelan spot in Indy, so yay rah! I was able to place my order over the phone 30 minutes before they closed. Upon arriving I was warmly greeted by Gizelle! I ordered the Arepa Supremo. This entree is served open faced with fried corn-flour chips, shredded beef, chicken, avocado, black beans, plantains and a garlicky salsa verde sauce- a "nachoesque" bowl of pure goodness. The meat was well seasoned and the combination of the above items mentioned were the perfect compliment. My only disappointment was not getting the extra black beans on the side that I paid for and they forgot to add. I'll chalk it up to it being closing time. Thus, my reason for only 4 stars......sigh. Firstly, if you live in Indianapolis and have not tried Cumaco Arepa House, you are doing yourself a disservice. They serve excellent, authentic food in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The service is great too; we got our food in well under 10 minutes. I ordered the Asado Negro, and I will definitely be eating it again in the near future! It was tender nearly like pot roast, and it also has the punch from the sauce. It's vaguely sweet and very rich; it's hard to describe but a must have. It's a wonderful combination with some white rice. On top of all this deliciousness, I received three of the most perfectly cooked plantains I've ever had. I love plantains that are a little charred on the outside with a sweet, tender center. I thoroughly enjoyed dinner, and I am thankful I have a second portion for lunch tomorrow. I am absolutely thrilled that this arepa place exists and was brought to my attention via Yelp Elite. Right on Allisonville as you cross into Carmel sits this wonderful arepa place that everyone needs to know about. There is both indoor and outdoor seating with great Latin music playing through the speakers. The owner cashed us out and you could just tell he was so proud of what he's built. We had the taquerios, which are Venezuelan cheese sticks with the most amazing sauce. (Pro tip: save some to put on your arepa.) I had the vegetarian arepa and my boyfriend had the beef. Both were full of great flavor. One arepa per person is plenty, in our opinion. We also tried the Fress soda, a Venezuelan drink that reminded us a lot of cream soda. We love arepas and were excited to see a spot in Indy specializing in Venezuelan arepas. It was pretty busy on a Sunday afternoon and we got the last available table. They had a Sancacho soup special on sundays that we didn't order, but it seemed as though a lot of people were ordering it. We decided to stick with the arepas and opted for 3 arepas between 2 people which was plenty. They were huge! Literally the size of my head and stuffed with a generous amount of protein. Our favorite was the pabellon which had cheese, plaintains, and beef. The mix of flavors and textures was delicious and would highly recommend trying this one out. The chicken avocado salad arepa was good but a little too one noted in texture for my liking. Basically just a ton of shredded chicken, mayo, and avocado. I think I would've enjoyed some heat or acid to help cut through the heaviness of the avocado and mayo. The other arepa we tried was the llanera which had sliced beef with pico de gallo. I liked the sauce but the beef was a little tough for my liking. There was a little bit of a wait for food but expected since it was so busy. Service was very friendly.
