I had the Tipico El Sol which ended up being a lot of food for just myself but it was a really good deal. I have always loved this spot. There's not many Guatemalan restaurants in NoVa. I would have to drive to Maryland around Langley Park to get some good garnachas. It's definitely my comfort food. If you don't speak the language , don't go here . I went there and order a breakfast , what I received was not what I order . Not realizing the time was almost 1:pm , I guess breakfast was over and they gave me scraps . If you were thinking . No I did not eat it. The waitress ask did if I want a box , her question should've have been would you like a refund . Steak , eggs, plantains and cheesy hash browns. The eggs I ask to be over medium , I received scramble hard with tomatoes and onions . ( looked like they was cooked on dirty grease ) Hash-brown no cheese but full of old grease . The same for the plantains . The steak was the only thing on the plate eatable . My drink was suppose to be a Jamaican . But I received a crush ice drink ( no taste) with a salted rim of salt and a slice of lime. Lunch today was something new - I had no idea what cuisine Cuna Del Sol was - but I was ready for a new culinary experience! When I walked in for a late lunch - the first response ringing through my brain was "jackpot!" I was the only Caucasian person in the joint. Everyone else was some flavor or Hispanic/Latino. Which is usually an indicator that the local ethnic population thinks the food is pretty good. Cuna Del Sol it turns out - is a Guatemalan restaurant. I sat down and scanned the menu - the first item I wanted to try - the "Tortitas De Carne" - they were out of for the day. So I explained to my waitress Mary - that I had never had Guatemalan cuisine - and that I wanted to select something off the menu that was closer to authentic (they had some American and Mexican offerings on the menu and I did not want to pick one of those). So Mary recommended I try the "Plato Tipico": 2 tacos, 2 pastelitos de papa, 2 garnachas, 1 chile relleno, served with refried beans, salad, and fresh homemade cheese. And I added a glass of water with a wedge of lime and a Corona with a wedge of lime. First Mary brought out a very small basket of chips and a side of salsa. However, I was not phased by the relative paucity of chips as I did not want to fill up on chips. I ate the quantity that was brought to me - but I did add a good bit of the red hot sauce that was on the table to the salsa - the salsa was relatively bland. My food came out and it all looked pretty yummy. I knew there was no way I was going to be able to eat the whole thing - it was a good bit of food. I ended up eating one taco, one pastelitos de papa, and one garnacha, plus the Chile relleno, the cole slaw, and part of the pickled cabbage side they brought me. Food was all good - particularly the Chile relleno, nothing to spicy - I added hot sauce to everything after tasting each item. Meal was $10.95 without the beer. Cuna Del Sol: Crib of the Sun? Really?...Really?? Not a 'staring' experience for lunch today. I had read several reviews and almost went here a time or two since moving to Manassas. Not a very good lunch experience but I'm not going to slam them too bad because my server, Sayra was very nice. I wanted some Sopa De Pollo, it's on the menu but this entree comes with chicken on the side. I just wanted the soup & Sayra said it would be no problem. It came with chicken livers, not a single bit of real chicken meat. The broth was tasty, there were lots of potatoes & carrots and flavored with cilantro. I ordered the Tacos Del Sol. Never have I had tacos like this. They looked more like enchiladas. There was no way to pick them up. WTF? Tacos you eat with a fork...please!!! The chicken was all dark meat...C'mon man! The tortillas were supposed to be flour but they had a mushy & mealy texture and flavor. I basically just ate the chicken. It came with rice, guacamole & lettuce on the plate. The guacamole was fresh and flavorful, that's the best I can say about their 'tacos'. I also ordered sweet tea, it was clear that it wasn't fresh brewed, in fact it was more like tea syrup and not very good. The soup was $10 bucks and the tacos were another $10. Not really what I expected for that kind of money.... $22 bucks... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!! I sat at the bar so I could watch the Rose Bowl Parade on their HD TV. It was fun. it was festive, lot's of color...mostly red. Then somebody turned on the house sound system... spanish radio playing Christmas music. Felize Nuevo Ano Amigos! Change the calendar...right...the Mayan one. I doubt I will try this place again as there are way too many other options in this town. read more

where to begin? 1-food is not that great 2-server is terrible (curly dark hair, very pretty but her actions/attitude was horrible), acted like she was annoyed for taking care of us. She sat down a few tables away from us to eat and to be on her phone the whole time . 3-literally just took our order and never came back till we asked another person for the check. 4-our check had gratuity added for 2 adults and one child, that's ridiculous, 8-10 people is understandable but their "gratuity policy" according to the manager goes something like this "if they(servers) don't know you personally, they add gratuity no matter what.....are you serious? seems illegal af. 5-after some words with the manager and getting gratuity removed, curly hair had the nerved to come to our table and confronted us why the gratuity was being removed, well let me tell you something 20 years in the industry from wiping tables, serving, bartending gave me some insight about good -bad service, and sweety you're by far the worst. 5 stars only for the bakery side. I've bought baked goods here before and I've been pleased with all the products all for a good price. A few days ago I bought a birthday cake from there and I was very surprised to find the price, usually tres leches cakes are pricey, the young lady who assisted me was very attentive and was taking all precautions against Covid. I loved her customer service skills. From now on I will only buy my birthday cakes from here. Good food. No curbside pick up. Staff told me they are too busy to do that. Inside, staff was wearing masks. So that is good. But, people are eating inside in an enclosed space talking laughing etc with with no masks. Makes sense if your eating but with such a small space and so many people all you need is one with COVID. It's like any other pre-2020 indoor dining experience here. Line of people to pick up their food all inside with diners. Customer service definitely needs A LOT of improvement. This place is the only real game in town for good Guatemalan food. That's why they are busy and they know it. Once they get some real competition with a business owner who understands the importance of excellent customer service, taking the health of customers into consideration with regards to COVID, and how to use technology to their advantage to really provide fast efficient customer service I can see this place not making it or having to upgrade their service significantly. Until then, 5 stars for great food but 1 star for customer service and customer care. Staff is rude, slow, unwelcoming, and they mess up the orders. Guatemalan Food One of our favorite parts of teaching English to immigrants has been the party on the last day of class. Students are asked to bring a traditional dish from their country of origin. One time a woman from Morocco brought some roasted lamb with dates, and the meat absorbed the sweetness from the fruit. It was so good. We had one very sweet, very beautiful woman from Guatemala who brought some little things. I don't remember what she called them, but they were good. It was a small, fried tortilla topped with some ground beef, shredded cabbage, some type of sauce with just the right amount of kick and topped with shredded carrots. I'd never seen it since. Last week I was talking with a student from Guatemala, and I asked if she knew of any good Guatemalan restaurants in the area. She mentioned this place. I described the food item that the former student brought, and she said that these are known as "garnachas". She added that this place has them. She also added that this place has very good atol de elote and is also a bakery. So the next day we went. It's a very nice, low key restaurant. It had a couple of televisions, one on Univision, the other on Telemundo. I imagine this place will be packed during the world cup. Precious got the chicken soup, and I got a plate of garnachas. The garnaches are listed as an appetizer, and it was my intention to get a main course also, but they filled me up pretty good. We also go the atol de elote. And we got some bread that I intended to use to make a sandwich the next day. It was good. I'm going to be honest. The garnachas were not as good as the home made garnachas that our lovely former student made, but they were awesome nonetheless. The atol de elote was good too. I'll be back to place. I might even like to catch a world cup game at this place just to take in the atmosphere. read more

So..I am at La Cuna del Sol and I get greeted by a grumpy woman who looks annoy that I walked in here. She takes my order to go and I asked her about something else on the menu and looks at me like I am from another planet..Spanish is my first language but certain words in spanish mean different things in different countries..so I wanted to make sure. She made me feel stupid with how she answered me. When I pay her I noticed my tax is super high 15%..she didn't even gave me a receipt with the details of what I am paying..she just gave me a receipt from the credit card. I know that my total is $15 before taxes my total is $17.25..I am sorry but that is too much..What really irritates me is that as soon as a group of men walk in they get greeted with big smiles and they are taken care of right away. This will be the last time I will spend my hard earn money here. I just need to add this..after waiting for 30+ minutes for 3 simple enchiladas (which are like tostadas) and 3 plaintain empanadas..I ask the waitresses (they were all eating in a table chatting like they were customers) where my food was..remember the group of men that came in after me?..well they were finishing their food!..they ordered food that takes longer to cook..I think one they don't like women (two ladies came in and they were ignored as well until one of the waitresses decided to get up from the table she was with her coworkers..I could tell she was annoyed those ladies came to interruped their good time) and two they don't give a s** if you ordering take out. I was traveling on business and found this restaurant using yelp. The reviews were good, so I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. To drink I ordered the banana shake, which was very good. I asked the waitress what typical Guatemalan dish was and she suggested the Garnachas (Deep fried corn tortilla topped with diced beef, onions, cilantro, cabbage, tomato sauce and parmesan cheese). I thought it was tasty, but the tomato sauce could use a little something. For my main dish, I ordered the Plato Mixto (grilled beef, chicken, shrimp and marinated pork loin, rice, re-fried beans, avocado , and mixed salad) which was delicious. Desert was a little let down.... I tried the Taquitos de Banano con Caramelo y Helado, which was served with a cherry syrup instead of caramel, and a store bought styrofoam cup of ice cream that was frozen solid, instead of the two balls shown on their on line menu. If you like authentic central American food, this is your place to go in Manassas. The platanos fritos were cooked to perfection. Tried the tacos and and another dish, can't remember what. This place use to be good back in the day, maybe like 4 years ago. Lately their service is slow, so slow that you better arrive there not being hungry. Because you'll wait an hour to get your ordered at your table and an hour to get your check. On top of that, they clean their silverware right in the middle of the dining area, making so much noise that you'll walk out with a headache. Also, be aware that they'll include an 18% tip on your bill, regardless of them providing good service or not. This was one of those finds that make you wonder how come you didn't hear about this place before. The only reason I found out about it, was I was on my way to Lowe's and pulled into the wrong shopping plaza. Never had Guatemalan food before, way better than any Mexican restaurant that I have found in Virginia. Let me begin with saying I have not had a meal like that in a very very long time! I ordered the steak, pork loin, shrimp, chicken, rice plate w/salad (not sure of the actual name-$15.95). I also asked for refried beans on the side. The food had so much incredible flavor it was unreal...even the rice was fantastic! The folks were nice and accommodating, although we had a language barrier and had to do the point and shoot method at the menu, it was well worth it. Not sure what the drinks were like since all I could understand to order was water. But the icy-frothy shake in the wine glasses being enjoyed by other patrons looked very appetizing.
