don't ever go to this place. It is disgusting inside. They leave cremated bodies in a box on the floor in they're so-called office. In fact, they picked up one of the boxes and passed it around for me and my family to feel how heavy it was which I declined because thats somebody else's family member! I went to them because they are the cheapest in town, but when I walked in their facility, I was sick to my stomach. Absolutely nothing professional about it at. I had to sit on dirty stinky couches. 5 stars -- highly recommended. I would absolutely work with Rick again if the need arose. When I compared options, his services were the most affordable, which mattered a lot as we were on a tight budget -- and I have zero regrets. From my very first phone call, Rick took the time to ask all the necessary questions and clearly explained what my mom and I needed to do on our end to get the paperwork right. He was responsive, practical, and efficient throughout the entire process. Some people might prefer a softer or more comforting bedside manner during such an emotional time. Rick's approach is more straightforward and business-like, which some may find a bit curt -- but for me, it was exactly what I needed. I wasn't looking for a grief counselor; I needed someone who could guide us through each step without wasting time or adding stress. He did that exceptionally well. He also went above and beyond by bringing the paperwork and the urn directly to my mom at home. There was a small mix-up with the urn delivery, but he corrected it quickly and professionally. Needed my husband cremated. I didn't have a lot of money. I guess you get what you pay for. Did he get cremated? YES!! There was NEVER any follow thru with Rick. They don't take cards of any kind. Not even debt cards. But they do take personal checks. But I was told they wouldn't pick my husband up from the coroners office till the check cleared the bank. And since my bank is out of town that would have been 10 days. So I paid with cash. Because my husband died during the holidays I was at the mercy of coroner's office as of the results of his autopsy. Well I had to call to get the death certificate from Rick. And when I showed up to get the death certificate he says they were swamped at the vital records place and he was going back later in the day. I went there myself and there was only 3 people in there. I was in an out in 15 minutes. Rick also said that he would have my husbands remains back later in the day. So I said when you have his remains to call me and I will come back to pick them up. I live 1 hour away. Well Rick never called. When I called him back 1 week later to see if he had his remains I was told that he had them that Monday. I said why didn't you call me back? Anyways I picked up his remains. We were waiting for the final reason why he died from the coroners office to get the final death certificate. Rick said he would know as soon as they have the results with his system. And he would call me. Well the coroners office called me to tell me. I waited 2 weeks to see if Rick would call me like he said he would. He didn't !!!! I called him after 2 weeks and left a message to say I've heard from coroners office and waited for his call which never happened. And asked him to please mail me the final death certificate. Which I received it a week later. My husband was cremated and Rick handled it. But there was NO follow thru on his part. Once he had my money. I had to call to get first death certificate. I had to call to see if he had his remains. When he had them for 1 week before I went to pick them up. I had to call for the second and final death certificate when he said he would call me. Well definitely not something I want to have to do again. And if money wasn't an issue I would NOT go thru this place. When your waiting for your love ones remains and he can't even call you to say the are sitting on his floor in his space. (I'd say office but it was just a room in his building with a couch in it). And I know my husbands remains were probably on the floor cause when I went to pay him money there was other remains on the floor in those plastic boxes. He cremated my husband's remains and the cost was reasonable. But NO FOLLOW THRU on HIs part whatsoever. Even when he said he would... he didn't... as long as he had my money. This man should not be in this line of work. My daughters lost their father and utilized this business. He lacks compassion and is very rude. My daughter lives out of town and called numerous times to schedule a time to pick up the ashes. He never returned calls and was never available when she was in town. She was in town so she called and he told her to come in. She brought her sister with her and when they arrived, he walked to the car with the ashes and told them that they are horrible daughters and went on to say that he doesn't like to give the death certificate because all people care about is benefits. He is so unprofessional and doesn't have any idea as to what people are going through. He brought them both to tears and they told him he is an awful man to talk to them like he was. This is for Cunningham's Affordable Burial and Cremation Center in Modesto California. My mother in law passed away in June of 2023, I was chosen to handle taking care of things. We didn't have a great deal of money available so I shopped around. I found Cunningham's Affordable Burial and Cremation Center in Modesto Ca. I talked to a very kind man named Rick. He helped me navigate the entire process. Let me know when we could use a pending Death Certificate versus a certified Death Certificate, who knew there was a difference. Rick was kind, patient, and caring, he was also very knowledgeable. He made a very difficult time for me less so. The poor man even listened to me while I cried. I don't think he realized how much he helped me. I don't want to have to go through this again, but I can honestly say that if I have to, I am going to go back to Cunningham's Affordable Burial and Cremation Center in Modesto and hopefully Rick will still be there to go through this with me again. What a jerk! I called The MODESTO, CA center to get information to pay for my sister-In-Law's cremation. They don't take cards. Only Cash, money orders, cashier checks and checks. Well I live in another state, so I asked if they could process a card over the phone. Rick said "NO! we don't take cards!! Haven't you ever heard of money orders, Walmart, snail mail, western union? " Excuse me but who the heck do you think you are talking to? SO RUDE! Of coarse I've heard of snail mail! When do you need payment by to process my fmaily member? "Well the cororner gives 30 days. She's been her for 10. So that makes 20 days left." I can do the math too idiot!! I then asked for the address. "1717 Coffee Rd, Like the stuff you drink, C-O-F-F-E-E" I know how to spell coffee and I know where coffee rd is in Modesto. He actually sounded shocked. If my family members had a better choice.... Horrible !!!!!!!!! Rick is unprofessional. When went to his office it was dirty & unkempt . He was with a grieving family and separating someone's remains and putting them into a smaller urn ' ' IN HIS OFFICE'. He was rude and unorthodox. Body boxes in ' his office... He took days to pick up my son and when I called him to see if my son's ashes were ready he basically yelled at me. Days later I called again to ask the same question and his response was ' yea I think that's who I just picked up.. The final straw was. We had asked him if he could get my sons fingerprints so we could have them put on charms fo his kids and he said yes but when I picked up my sons remains and he showed me the prints he said to me. ' He was kinda slimy ' How horrible of him to talk to a grieving family member like that. NEVER AGAIN!!!!! The only reason hes getting 1 star is because I cant post this without it. read more

I worked with Rick regarding the passing of my Mother. He assisted me over the phone, as I live 2 hours away. He helped with all transportation, assisted me in obtaining the death certificates I needed and worked (as much as possible) on my timeline. Others have mentioned the office. It is indeed antiquated and "simple". If you want glamorous and polished, you'll need to go elsewhere and pay much more. You get what you paid for. My mom passed away after a battle with Cancer and we didn't have a lot of money to take care of arrangements. While my sister set everything up, when we got there was not impressed with the state of their offices. It looked like a foreclosure. Weeds tall and the building looked unkempt. The limo and hearse were dirty and out of the 80's. The funeral director Rick, seemed a bit disturbed. We had a unique situation and needed to split the ashes, Rick told us info about past clients, and their unique experiences. Not professional at all. I assume people have heard a few tales about us as well. They do not take anything but Cash and Checks. I had to call on a weekly basis to see if the ashes were ready, once they were I asked when I could come and pick them up and was told "Well I don't know when I am going to be here I have 9 bodies to take care of". Again you are a business and that is not my problem nor is it professional. I had to go down there while he was there that day to ensure I would get them when I needed them. He doesn't tell you also that they have to issue a death notice to the local paper, so imagine my surprise to see my Mom's name in the obituaries without expecting it. Getting the death certificate was another challenge. Once again I had to call weekly to see if it was ready, even though he said he would call. When they were ready he said he mailed them and a month later nothing. Had to call him back and beg him to order me a new one which was going to cost me $30 because he had to go to the County to get it. Eventually we got him resend the 2 we already paid for and I never heard back from him on the one I wanted to order. I left there feeling he was shady as hell. The worst service ever!!!! First, Rick Cunningham was 3 1/2 hours late picking up my father's body. Second, he harrassed me for payment by calling my phone about 20 times and leaving foul languaged messages. Note: 48 hours after the death of my father. Third, after receiving payment, Rick failed to return any of my calls,about when my father's remains would be ready for retrival. It's been 3 years since my husband passed and I'm still unhappy with Cuningham's service. I thought the business was in Santa Clara. No one told me they are in Livermore, so when someone came from Livermore, no way was I going to turn my husband over to someone I didn't know anything about. I had to call to get more information. I didn't hear anything back for several days, so started calling. For 3 days, I couldn't reach anyone by phone. Turned out they were out of town, but hadn't arranged for anyone to cover the phone. It took 2 weeks to receive the ashes and they still hadn't come by the agreed upon date. They said they had missed the mail pickup. When I made the initial contact, I asked that the ashes be divided up and that was OK. When the ashes came, they were not divided. Had to call again! I was told dividing ashes was against state law. THEY LIED TO ME! The only thing that went right was the price. That never changed. I reported all this to the health worker who recommended them. Feedback is important. read more

I had a very good experience with this business in 2009 and 2016 and was grateful to Rick for handling what needed to be done. Rick is professional, friendly as well as empathetic. He is upfront and answered all my questions. He was very patient and kind. He was willing to work and meet my needs when It was time to pick up the ashes and death certificates. He was very well dressed both times I met with him. I observed the viewing/service room and it was clean and well kept. Rick does not own this building and people need to give him a break about it not being a professional looking office. He is a one man show and runs the business all by himself. The office is comfortable and the vehicles I saw that were used to transport to the graveyard were parked on the street and clean. He was very affordable and I have no complaints. I was helping a family in arrangements for their loved one and couldn't believe the way they were treated. The person working there hung up on family members 3 times during the process and when called to meet and pay the final amount owed I could hear him yelling at a family member, I was shocked. Affordable!!! For any one that is in a jam like my family just went through. Sudden death of a family member and had to act quickly and pull together the money. Yes, Rick could use a course in professional etiquette....he's a little quirky and i think that he doesn't realize the way he talks about "bodies" is unsympathetic.....he can lose his cool at times and that's not helpful.....it wasn't the greatest experience but in the end, he did a great job with our family member.,..he is the only service that will transport your loved one to your home, church or wherever you want, within the city I'm sure....yes, the office place is scary, the hearst is out dated but I'm sure that's how they make this unfortunate process affordable. I think those who gave low ratings were not considering the fact that Cunningham's is "affordable". Therefore, if you are looking for all the bells and whistles, this may not be the place for you. We found that Rick was always available to answer any questions we had, and was very helpful in guiding us in the process that would happen. On top of that, it was affordable. I think it would be very difficult for anyone to deal with families who are undergoing such difficult circumstances and emotions and appreciate and respect those who have chosen the funeral profession.
