Three visits, three espressos; the good, the bad and the indifferent. They obtain their beans from Ceremony Coffee Roasters (great Baltimore location!) which I enjoy. The problems is that the employees, while friendly, do not exhibit significant barista training and therefore the final product is wildly inconsistent. A double espresso for $2.00 it's a good price but never knowing how it's going to taste constitutes a problem. There are few things more frustrating or unpleasant than over-extracted espresso in a coffeeshop; bitter, hollow and ashy... yuck. With that said, I do enjoy Cunninghams Cafe. The staff are polite, the place is clean, the décor is rustic and outdoorsy with a skosh of industrial charm. It's great to sit down (indoors or outside), enjoy a beverage or nibble, and if you're feeling bold, complete the Times crossword with a pen. read more

A great selection of sandwiches, salads and of course baked goods. The chicken is freshly grilled and not dry at all. They do not have a lot of seating, so at lunch time it can be very busy. During the summer months they have seating outside. If you are in Towson, this is a great local place to have lunch. read more

Yesterday, I had take-out from Cunninghams. I ordered pancakes - nothing difficult. I received two pancakes that looked like a mouse had crawled over the top of both and just scratch up and nibbled at the surface. They also tasted like onion - clearly whatever they used to flip them had onion on it. I realize this was a take out order so less likely to go back. Still two pancakes cost over $13.00 so I expect a bit more. This is the second time my take-out food was less than desirable. This really does make me question eating there again. read more

Overall, I would return here to try more of the menu including the coffee drinks. I went here around 1:20 on a Monday for lunch, and hit the end of the lunch rush so luckily some of the few tables had opened up. I love the decor- rustic and coffee-themed? The Masala Chai Latte ($4.75) is huge, beautiful, creamy, and perfectly spiced. I ordered the Sundried Tomato Chicken sandwich ($11) which has a huge portion of chicken, and was fairly good. The best part was the bread. My mother ordered the Veggie Powerhouse ($9) and we both though that the sandwich packed a lot of creamy, good flavor for a powerhouse-style sandwich. We also tried the Curry Carrot soup, which we were skeptical of at first because of the overpowering curry flavor. It grew on us, and we both ended up really enjoying the flavor. Parking was something we were worried about, but there ended up being several open spaces in the restaurant's lot across the street. While the lunch was on the pricier end, I'm looking forward to returning-- the PB&J-style sandwich looks like the next thing to try! read more

Turkey Avocado BLT - such a simple sandwich but hands down one of the best I've ever had. Delicious.

A few of my friends live in Towson and when we're looking to grab a quick bite to eat, the options can be limited. Fortunately, Cunningham's Cafe & Bakery recently opened by the Bagby Restaurant Group is located right in the heart of downtown Towson and it's the perfect place to grab a bite to eat. Bagby Restaurant Group owns a few restaurants in Baltimore, the others are Cunningham's inTowson and Ten Ten American Bistro, Fleet Street Kitchen and Bagby Pizza Co. in Harbor East. I've been to Bagby Pizza Co and it was great so I had high hopes for Cunningham's Cafe & Bakery. Fortunately when my friends and I went, the weather was beautiful and we were able to enjoy a meal outside. We each ordered a sandwich, my friend ordered the Powerhouse and it came with hummus, goat cheese, carrots, cucumber, avocado, red onion and roasted peppers on multigrain bread. My friend liked this, she said all of the ingredients were very fresh and it was nice to be eating something healthy. My other friend decided to go with the Roasted Turkey with Bacon. The sandwich had tomato jam, baby lettuce and barbecue mayo on multigrain bread. She loved this sandwich and said everything was very fresh and tasty, but there was nothing particularly memorable about this sandwich. One of my favorite sandwiches is the Braised Brisket Sandwich from By Degrees Cafe so I was hoping to order something along those lines. I ended up ordering the House Roast Beef Boursin. It had onion, tomato, horseradish aioli and roast beef on ciabatta bread. The sandwich was good, but I was expecting more of a slow cooked brisket sandwich as opposed to almost brisket deli meat. While the sandwiches at Cunningham's Cafe & Bakery in Towson are delicious, they're not mind-blowingly innovative. I would gladly return to try some more of their delicious options. read more

My husband and I had to drop off our daughter for a training at Goucher College, so we decided to grab breakfast while we waited to pick her up. We have never hung around Towson but found this place on Yelp. Immediately, I knew I would love it! The atmosphere was fun and welcoming. Their menu options were exceptional from pastries to coffee to entrees. My husband ordered a breakfast burrito with a coffee. I had the biscuits and gravy breakfast with a soy latte. We split a cheese danish which was warmed up nicely. Food was AMAZING and came fast! Service was exceptional as well. We will definitely be back! Cute corner spot in downtown Towson. Great ambiance. We both got the breakfast burritos and a blueberry muffin. The breakfast burrito was pretty good- hot and flavorful. It wasn't big but was a normal size. The blueberry muffin was great- super soft on the inside but the top had a crunch. I got the mango blackberry Italian soda, which was very refreshing. Cunningham's is a very cute bakery and cafe. Small, but charming, it makes you feel like you want to hang out and stay awhile. Bread products are all baked in-house. On our visit we had a butterscotch scone, a toasted English muffin, a couple of macaroons and an Arnold Palmer (half iced tea, half lemonade). Both the bakery items were good. Based on this, the cute environment, and some other delicious sounding items on the menu I'll come back again - even though everything else was less than I'd hoped. Misses: Macaroons - based on the texture, they seemed not as fresh as I'd hoped. I love that they make their own jam - but it was a huge disappointment, with a gummy texture that I couldn't wait to get out of my mouth. Smuckers would have been ok. Waited 40 mins for a to go order, that wasn't correct. Ordered two sausage egg and cheese on English muffins, did not put cheese on them. Avocado toast, that they barley put avocado on. I have been here several times, and this was the first time when I asked the young lady food running what the hold up was, she condescendingly turned to me and said that "we take orders over the phone that cut down on wait times" I have never been treated like that by anyone here before. Hip and modern, this café has a wide selection of brunch foods! We had the peach cobbler pancakes and the omelette of the day, and both of them were delivered quickly and tasted great! Two words: Go Here! Cunningham's café isn't one of those coffee shops that just happen to serve food as well, or vice versa. This place is the real deal - wonderfully roasted fresh coffee with creative specialty drinks as well as a variety of loose leaf teas, coupled with artisan baked good and deliciously fresh breakfast/lunch menu options. First, this place just feels homey. The fresh flower and cacti arrangements on the patio make for a nice entrance to the café and the perfect environment to relax and enjoy some coffee. The café has worn down rustic wood interior with a several tables and a large communal table near the condiments section. The staff is always really nice and coffee and food makes its way out the kitchen quickly. Its also a nice touch that everything is served in proper porcelain tableware if you choose to dine in. I always opt for one of the specialty coffee drinks, which change on occasion based on season. So far both the spearmint latte and cinnamon toast latte have been spot on and not too sweet. You cannot pass up the breakfast burrito, which is perfect to share. This burrito comes with savory home fry potatoes (that actually have flavor), fluffy scrambled egg, guacamole, black beans and picco de gallo. There's breakfast burritos and then there's the Cunningham breakfast burritos - just get it. On the other visit I had the breakfast sandwich which features fluffy scrambled eggs, white gooey cheddar cheese (not that artificial oily crap), and your choice of sausage, bacon, or scrapple on a cheddar/chive biscuit. I opted for the sausage, which proved to be a winning choice - just excellent. Just when you're stuffed, make sure to pick up one of their fresh baked loaves of bread to bring home. I picked up one of their sourdough loafs which was spectacular with just some good European butter and some kosher salt. I can go on and on, but just try this place. Pretty decent cafe for breakfast/brunch with family. They have both inside and outside seating and parking lot is right across from the cafe, next to Fidelity. There's a good variety food and we have tried their French toast, Breakfast Burrito, and Market Breakfast. To be honest, the only thing that I thought was excellent was their Breakfast Burrito, everything else was pretty average. However, I give them 4-stars because of their coffee. I enjoyed the cappuccino and the regular coffee. And if you get the regular cup if coffee, there's free refills and you can even get a to-go cup before you leave. Legitimately like coming here but they don't enforce towing in their lot so half the time (not an exaggeration) when I drive there, I can't park anywhere and end up leaving. I called because I wasn't sure if they were aware of the situation and how often I see other cars backing out of the lot, unable to find parking, and driving away and I let them know I thought I'd mention the lot fullness because it could be costing them business. The woman who I spoke to on the phone said she "didn't know that was necessarily the case" because "this place is pretty poppin'" and I pointed out to her that I wasn't able to come half the time so it is costing a little business. I was really polite despite her condescending tone. I know she doesn't own the place or anything, it's just a bummer that I didn't feel heard or respected when I just called to let them know that, despite the cafe being pretty dead, the lot was full. I love this place... in fact, I'm planning on going again tomorrow morning as they have the best croissants and baked goods in the Baltimore area that I have found to date (trust me, I've tried them all for you). My boyfriend ordered an iced coffee- would have been great except for the "caramel flavoring" was thick caramel! When added to the iced coffee the Carmel never mixed in and was just chunky! This is THE best brunch in Towson, and one of the best in the state of Maryland. On par with anything offered at Miss Shirley's. We ordered the Brioche French Toast and the Bagby Breakfast Burrito. This little bakery sheds the Baltimore image but it's feels more like your walking into a bakery in the west village of NYC. It offers coffee and home baked breads soups and sandwiches. All the food looks like its been prepared with care and attention to detail. Went here on a Labor Day morning to grab a quick breakfast with my sister. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese and Scrapple. The friendly dude behind the counter gave me a high-five for choosing Scrapple. I remember eating Scrapple as a kid, when it was readily available at the local supermarket. Now you see Scrapple used almost as a gourmet ingredient. So ya gotta love a place that has Scrapple on the menu. And ya gotta love a place that appreciates a customer who loves Scrapple. The sandwich was delicious, obviously. I got it on a cheddar cheese scone which tasted freshly baked. For just $6.50, it was the size of two Egg McMuffins. A bargain when you think about it. I'll definitely check into this place more often. After a fun show in Philadelphia (made even FUNNER by the surprise visit from my sister and brother-in-law) our extremely talented Front of House Engineer/Tour Manager (Sharif Productions) drove us further south to Maryland. We had a show that night at "U Street Music Hall" in Washington, D.C., but first we played a LIVE radio performance at WTMD in Towson, MD. Upon puling up to the radio station offices, I noticed this bakery right next door. Sometimes you just get a feeling that a place is gonna be great based on their aesthetic. Good taste in imagery and design usually translates to good taste in food...Cunningham's is no exception. I have one MAJOR problem with how things went down that day. We loaded the gear into WTMD Studios and was sent to the green room where some sandwiches and baked goods were provided. There were danishes, croissants, bear claws, and muffins...I set forth to try each and every single pastry with a firm belief that these would taste amazing; as I assumed they were from the bakery RIGHT next door. Well, you can imagine my horror when it was made clear to me that all these desserts were NOT in fact from Cunningham's. Ladies and Gentlemen, I had just wasted my sugar intake for the day on.... i can barely believe it myself....on... just gimme a second, this hurts to say...... on PANERAAAAAAAA!!! Wtf. I was Panerasterical and overcome with regret. On the other hand, however, I was equally DELIGHTED to know that the bullshit I had just put in my mouth was NOT Cunningham's. There was still hope for my conviction! After an extremely colorful reprimanding of the WTMD staff for such a bakery boner, we played the show and promptly headed to Cunningham's. When we arrived the inside of this place was every bit as pleasant as the outside; made even more-so by the beautiful smiles of their staff (namely Brianna, Babs, and Kate). We ordered our lunch and I explained that we'd need to sample all their cookies and cakes over the next 2 days in the van. (Of course, keeping into account that the freshness factor would be compromised). Kate was extremely accommodating and prepared a bountiful box of goodness. But first, the food: All of it is fresh from a local farm and it's all organic! They have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options as well. Super amazing. I had the Arugula mixed greens salad, with raisins, pecans, and salmon. It was perfect! Some of the best salmon I ever had...cooked to the perfect temperature, juicy, and salted a little heavy (which I loved). I highly recommend this to anyone on the fence. Sondre had a small container of their pesto pasta (I tried some and it was great, full of flavor). He, Sharif Productions, and Chris Holm also ordered the fresh lemonade and said it was "perfect in the moment for its refreshing intensity, but perhaps the ratio of tart to sweet could be balanced better with the addition of some water. Ya know, as long as the water was vegetarian, free-range, and organic n stuff." We all broke into the box of sweets and here's our report: The Chocolate Chip cookie with sea salt is AMAZING! If you're going to get just one cookie, make it be this one. The Peanut Butter cookie and the Snickerdoodle were both a little too dry (and we ate those right away, so it wasn't the timing) though I will add that Chris Holm actually LOVED the Snickerdoodle. But he's never had one before, and he's from Norway. (I can't help but think the poor guy is suffering from some Post Traumatic Jet-Lag Disorder that affects his ability to taste goodness properly. Maybe he's hyper producing saliva to counter any lack of moisture in food? This could be a blessing or a curse...we should really get it looked at.) I'm not much of a "brownie" guy, but the one I picked up at Cunningham's was wrapped in plastic and maintained its rich, chocolatey goodness for THREE WHOLE DAYS! I recommend that jam for sure. We were given a long, thick baguette that just hardened too quickly for us to eat on our journey so we gave it to Teeny (from TEEN). Not sure what she used it for, but their music is AMAZING. Check them out. Cunningham's also gave us a whole loaf of "Tres Semi" and we didn't get around to eating it until 4 days later. We sliced it up and threw it in the toaster for just a little warmth. It was delicious! The spices really jumped out, even still after all that time, and Sondre (who typically doesn't like Anise) found the flavor delightful. "It tastes the way a star in the midnight sky would taste. (Had you never given up on that childhood dream...of eating ALL the stars in the sky....cuz they're delicious....prolly)." So hands down, the Tres Semi Bread rules. I also the Bombay Fog Latte and loved it. Chai is my thing, and that drink kept residence in my house of tasty drinks. That's it.
