When we arrived, it wasn't empty, wasn't slammed. Nothing felt rushed. Everything moved at the right pace, giving us time to talk, time to savor, time to just enjoy being there. Even after we paid, no one hurried us out. The room was filling up around us, but we never felt it. Fresh plates for every course. Water refilled when it emptied (not before we noticed, exactly when). Every time we said thank you, our server said "of course" like she truly meant it. The focaccia came out warm. Tear it open and you see irregular holes. That takes hours, not shortcuts. They bring whipped garlic butter because it spreads easier, but the bread's good enough alone. Four meatballs arrived, tender enough they fell apart as I tried to work them through the sauce. Took surgeon hands. Pool the red sauce on your plate or spoon some over the top of each bite. Without it, they're bland. With it, they're quite good. The pepperoni pizza came out right. Char on the crust, pepperoni curling into little grease cups, cheese stretching six inches on those first bites. The sauce is light. The crust ends taste a little like char and semolina. I'm a sauce guy. Always have been. This pizza wasn't what I look for, but the people around us all looked happy to be there and with their food. Giuseppe's making the pizza his customers want. Fruit crumble for dessert. Fresh blueberries and peaches, vanilla ice cream. I enjoyed the peach side more than the blueberries, which was unexpected. The peaches were a little less sweet. The blueberries? Really sweet. Fresh and enjoyable. Giuseppe's fills up for a reason. The service is the best I've experienced in months. People were taking their time, talking, enjoying everything that was in front of them. They seemed like they knew they were somewhere special. They got it right.

It's one of those local institutions that has been woven into the fabric of the community for decades. Fast forward to today, and not much has changed, which is exactly why I love it. They've updated the inside over the years, making it brighter and more comfortable, but it still feels like Athens. It's still run by the same family, the service is still warm and welcoming, and the food tastes just like I remember. This isn't the place you go looking for trendy, wood-fired, artisanal pizza with imported toppings you've never heard of. Athens has never tried to be that, and it doesn't need to be. They make honest, consistently good pizza and grinders at prices that are hard to beat. Sometimes simple, done really well, is exactly what you're looking for. Our order has barely changed over the years. We usually get a cheese and pepperoni pizza, occasionally adding onions, along with two Italian grinders. Every single time the food comes out hot, fresh, and exactly what we expected. I honestly can't remember ever having a bad meal here, and that's saying something considering I've been eating here for more than thirty years. Service has always been friendly, the wait is usually reasonable even when they're busy, and getting in and out couldn't be easier. It's one of those dependable places you never have to think twice about. More than anything, I'm just grateful Athens Pizza House is still here. So many family-owned restaurants from my childhood have disappeared, but this one has stayed true to what made people love it in the first place. Every bite of that pizza feels like it did decades ago, and somehow the recipe seems untouched by time. I'll never stop coming here. I relocated to Rhode Island over 20 years ago. the pizza I was trying was all the same, greasy spicy greek style. now there are hundreds of these types of shops and good for them but pizza is not a cheap snack anymore so I was looking for 5 star quality. My wife's family recommended Cuozzo's Pizza which is 7 min away from home. now let me explain, I grew up in a Boston Italian neighborhood with award winning chefs with Pizza 100 years of success. Cuozzo's is unlike anything in Rhode Island, this is "Real" Italian food with amazing pizza. by the way, I am a chef with an award winning catering busineas. when I don't want to cook I go to Cuozzo's. In fact, I just bought 2 quarts of their pasta sauce to make my lasagna. Their pizza is hands down the best in Rhode Island. I have tried over 20 pizzas in Providence and another 20 around the state, nothing comes close to Cuozzo's. But all of their food is great, in fact their Chicken Parm is the best I have ever had!! If you are in CT traveling to Cape Cod on route 6 you will drive right by so no excuse not to stop. If you are in Boston driving to NYC again no excuse not to stop in. You can ask my family, like most chefs I am a very tough customer and I love Cuozzo's and the owners and staff are incredible people.
