Before I write this review, I just want to address the fact that I'm writing this strictly based on my experience - everyone is different, and some will have better experiences than others. I have extremely thick, frizzy, curly hair. I did not schedule this appointment expecting a magical transformation. And I certainly did not get that. I recently went here for the first time, for what they call their "First Visit Curly Cut". I was greeted as soon as I walked in by an extremely pleasant woman at the reception desk. I waited for about 5 minutes before I was seen for my appointment. My stylist was friendly, not too talkative though, and the young girl who washed my hair was extremely wonderful. While you're waiting under the dryer for a conditioning treatment, they offer you drinks and make sure you're doing okay which was great. A lot of places don't do that. The process doesn't take too long, the entire process for me (dry cut, wash, 15 minute deep conditioning treatment, and another treatment under the dryer) took about an hour and a half. Now, let me say again, you cannot go into this place expecting a complete transformation. That is not what you'll get. I find that for the first visit curly cut, it is more like a consultation. They put products in your hair to make the curls manageable, and then you'd have to purchase the products (which aren't too cheap) in order to keep your hair at the preferred style. I must say they do put a LOT of product in your hair, and they use something to sort of form a "casting" around your curls to keep them looking defined and shiny, and if the curls are scrunched, the cast will break and the product will be released into your curls. Overall, i did not have a terrible experience. The service was excellent and it is a beautiful salon. I just wish that i would have known that I was paying $95 for a haircut and to have products that I could have bought on my own put into my hair, only for it to last a few days. Maybe I should have done a little more research, but for me, I don't think I'll be returning to Curl Evolution. read more

I've been going here for a while and only return because theres no other options for curly hair on long island. However, none of the stylists here actually know what they're doing. First time i went here asked for a regular curly cut (nothing too drastic), all of my hair was chopped off into a circle and i cried for weeks. The left side of my hair reached my collar bones and the right side was somehow longer when wet. Kept giving them more chances, as i was hoping that it was just that stylist that didn't know what she was doing and its hard to find a salon that is familiar with my texture. Kept trying different stylists and was screwed over again and again. Got a bayalage and asked for a light caramel blonde, stylist somehow messed up and gave me a huge red streak in one of my money pieces and the rest of my hair had a horrible red tint. Had to come back the next day to see a different stylist and it needed to be rebleached to get the red out, damaging my hair tremendously. Every time I leave here I look worse from when I went in. Stylists are rude, constantly in a rush, and try to gaslight me although im the one whose had curly hair my whole life. Every experience is miserable because of their attitudes. They completely rush through appointments although they charge astronomical prices for a regular haircut. They either don't put enough product on at all and my hair is a frizzy mess or they put a disgusting amount on and my head is covered in gunk and feels gross to touch. One time i walked in with my hair unstyled since i was coming in for a cut and "curly set"and they literally looked at me like they were horrified, had no idea what to do. This salon seems like its good for people who don't actually have curly hair, maybe a slight wavy texture. But if you actually have curly hair do not be fooled by their marketing to your demographic. Go somewhere else and do not let them destroy your hair and take all of your money for horrible services time and time again like i did. I called to make an appointment for a maintenance cut because a cut is all I want but they said I can only get a welcome back cut since it's been so long, which is more expensive and includes a deep condition. I have been a Curl Evolution customer for well over a year and, lemme tell you, I never leave with anything less than a smile on my face. My usual stylist is Angela. First off, she's a doll. So super sweet and professional. When I first started seeing her, my curls were limp, stringy and lackluster. Well, she brought my hair back to life. She was super informative and gave me fantastic tips to getting my curls to their full potential. Today, I had the pleasure of working with Sophia for a trim and color. Well!!! My color is outstanding. She did a fantastic job of taking me from my summer sun-kissed blonde tips to a rich autumn-toned auburn. I absolutely love it. I couldn't recommend Curl Evolution more highly. If you're a curly girl, guy or kid...this is the place to go to give love to your loops!!!! read more

I went a few months ago but just got around to writing a review. I saw Sharon and Loved my cut! I am 32 and have NEVER left a hair cut happy. I'm always upset they cut too much and its never got any shape. I finally embraced my curls this year and stopped flat ironing EVERY week 2 hours for the last 15 years! I accidentally confirmed the wrong time for my cut. When I got there, I thought I was 15 minutes early, but they said I was 15 minutes late. It was 45 minutes before they were going to close and they refused to take me. I was there and they didn't even offer another solution. All they offered was another appointment in 2 weeks. I was so frustrated at them being so unreasonable and mad because I confirmed the wrong time. It was so inconvenient because I had to arrange for someone to watch my son and I had to rush to get there! I miss my hair dresser, but I don't want that to happen to me again, so I'm looking for someplace else to go where they are more reasonable and understanding. Any suggestions? read more

I'm extremely disappointed to say I won't be returned back to Curl Evolution, at least not for a blowout. I went in yesterday (was only my 2nd time there - both times blowouts). My first time, Angela did a wonderful job and gave me a nice, shiny bouncy blowout, so I expected the same this weekend. Boy was I wrong. The entire experience was just disappointing from the moment I walked in. My appointment was 10am, I arrived at 9:50am in case the temperature screening took a while. It didnt, and they set me in the side room in a chair. I waited there until 10:25am when I finally told the receptionist to see when I would be taken - I had an engagement party at 12pm that day. The stylist, Laura, came and washed me at 10:30am but still had a client in her chair, so I had to wait a few more minutes next to her. Finally I sat in her chair at around 10:40am, when I should have been done and walking out of the salon (my hair takes about 20mins to blow out). She asked me how I wanted my hair. I explained just a simple volumized blowout, and she said she'd add big curls at the bottom. She started off wrong so that should've been my major flag. She parted my hair and was about to start blowdrying it when I stopped her and asked if she was going to add any product to it. She paused and said, "oh well I was trying to dry it a little bit." ... Not with the brush in your hand you weren't. Plus the cardinal rule of blowdrying curly hair to a smooth blowout is blowdrying it soaking wet. That's when all my flags went up; I really should have just left at this point, but I stayed. Her technique was probably the worst technique to blowdry anyone with curly hair. She rolls your hair in the brush, holds the blowdryer on it in just one section, then unrolls it. She totally didn't blowdry the ends. This technique, first of all, takes FOREVER to blowdry, and secondly, does not blowout curly hair at all! It just dries it frizzy. I kept telling her throughout to brush and dry as you brush down - she wasn't getting it. The ends looks completely frayed and frizzy. She finally started wrapping up around 11:20am, when I told her I was completely unhappy. Her response: "well I'm trying to make you happy but you're rushing me, I'm going as fast as I can." ... She attempts to "blow out" the ends but once curly hair is dried and frizzy, there's no going back. She turned me around and asked me how I like it. I told her I was very unhappy with it, but now I'm beyond late ... I had been there for about 2 hours at that point ... for a BLOWOUT that should take HALF HOUR! The receptionist didn't even ask me how things were, she just was about to charge me when I told her "I just want to mention I'm completely unhappy with my blowout." She looked at me, probably realized the frizzy mess on my head, and just paused. I told her I'm not looking for a discount, but I wanted to speak to someone about the customer service and the stylist's technique in general. She looked at me and said "Well I don't have anymore appointments today." I told her that I'm now 1 hour late to an event, and I wouldn't even want another appointment. She responded, "I'm going to give you $10 off, and I'll make a note to put you with just Angela from now on." I told her I certainly will NOT be back for a blowout ever, and that I was just disappointed. Especially from a stylist who has curly hair herself ... I expected much better. I received a frizzy drying sessions for 1.5 hours, rather than a blowout I expected, and ultimately paid for. Beyond ridiculous. Plus, where is management when a client is unhappy?! Is there no troubleshooting plan in place?! I told the receptionist I wanted to speak to management, but she totally brushed off my inquiry. I love coming here! I have 3c curly hair and I tend to struggle keeping up with trimming whatsoever. But every time I leave the salon, I leave looking cute with my fresh healthy curls and most importantly my stylist (I have had more than one) always sends me home with products tips, styling tips, and maintenance tips that are personalized for me!! I came in this week for their model Tuesday, they have apprentice & Jr stylist further their training on clients. (Allison the owner/teacher is always around and very hands on, if you concerned about being a model) It's typically a free service, depending on what you get done and of course tipping. Ashley was my stylist (she also has a chair at the salon later in the week), She gave me a curly cut with a bit of a shaping which. I'm not exaggerating when I say that Curl Evolution changed my life. I've been beating my hair to death with blow dryers, flat irons, and bleach for as long as I can remember. Over the years I'd completely ruined my curl pattern and was left with sad, damaged waves on a good day. By the time I got to Angela I didn't think there was anything she could do for me and I was skeptical at best when she told me we could fix my hair. She was friendly, confident and informative as she walked me through each step of the process. I've attached a picture of my first curly cut below. When Angela finished and I got my first look, I saw happy, healthy waves for the first time in years. Angela helped me choose the products that work best for my hair and it's only gotten better now that I know how to take care of it correctly. Growing up as a Curly Girl, it's always been a struggle to find (and STAY WITH) a salon that can cut, color and style my lion's mane of curls. In the past, I've often overpaid for a cut/style I hated and was too embarrassed to ask them to fix it, only to throw it up into a ponytail until my next appointment. It got to the point where I hated having curly hair and wished I had straight hair like everyone else. Somehow I stumbled upon the CurlyGirl website and it was a game changer. Through a search engine, I found Curl Evolution and after many years of going there, I couldn't imagine trusting my curls with anyone else. I usually book my appointments with Erica, who is such a sweetheart. She listens to what you're looking for, and makes suggestions if she thinks it might not work for your face shape/hair texture instead of just doing it, which I appreciated. Right now, I'm rocking a short curly pixie which I NEVER would have had the courage to try if not for this salon and her. I have honestly never walked out of this salon with a haircut I haven't loved. They have their own line of product which is sulfate free (healthy for your curls) and smells divine. They also carry the DevaCurl line, which is what I started out using and what is usually recommended for most new Curly Girls, also sulfate free. When you go for your first curly cut they will walk you through the process step by step so you can do it on your own at home. The new salon is gorgeous and HUGE. They even have their own parking lot (which was always my main complaint about their old location). Make an appointment. Love your curls again! read more

If I could give 0 stars I would . I went to get a wash and set and the stylist literally burnt my hair . She struggled with getting my hair straight after I told her she's using too much heat . When I finished my hair felt very burnt . My natural curly hair won't even curl anymore . I suggest going to the Dominicans for a wash and set . Was really nervous going in for my first curly cut. Every salon I've ever gone to has suggested I relax my hair or use some form of a straightening treatment to make my hair easier to deal with. I explained this to Melissa and she reassured me that the products they used weren't going to damage my curls, rather enhance them . My hair was a little flat when it was still wet but once it dried my curls were light and fluffy. Finally found a salon and stylist that I like! Called to say we were running about 10 mins late to our appointment, the young lady that answered the phone said it was no problem that they give customers a 15min window to make it to their appointment. Upon arrival we are told that they will not be able to provide the services as they normally do because we were late (10 mins). They should tell you that over the phone cause why would we pay the same price for lesser service? It just makes no sense. They kept insisting that this was because then it would go over into the next clients appointment. Makes sense but then don't give people a 15min window to make it to their appointment time. And when I was calling to tell them we were running late I was left on hold for 10mins. Like I get that we were late but then don't give people 15 minutes to make it to their appointment time if you're then going to short change the client in their service, which wouldn't be considered a "regular service" since its obviously being announced that 1. Your job will be rushed and 2. Those 15mins that are meant to be for the customers convenience to make it to their appointment are truly just meant to short change them. Also there are no comment cards for customers to air out their grievances no way to let management know directly how the customer is feeling throughout the entire ordeal The hair cut did come out nicely which is why they get 2 stars instead of 1(cause I can't give 0) read more

I discovered curl evolution when mine and my mothers stylist Sharon came here. Sharon does amazing work as well as all the other ladies here. Always a nice welcoming atmosphere when coming in. A great place to come if you have curls as they make your curls look amazing, my brother comes every once in a while for his Afro and the curls come out nice and defined, moisturized. Sharon colors my hair and the results are always beyond amazing, I get so many compliments on her creative color work on my hair. read more

Had my first curly cut with stylist Jenna. She was a doll and truly understood my hair! I have very thick and very WAVY hair (not quite curly) that I fully embrace but my last stylist did not, always wanting to brush it and blow it straight. She spent 2 hours consulting, dry cutting, washing, deep conditioning, styling and correcting any last touch ups. She left the length I asked her to (always terrified a stylist will chop it off!) and my waves look like a luscious waterfall down my back with beautiful wavy pieces around my face. Curly girls finally have a place to go to get a cut for their hair. My entire life I have struggled with my very thick curls. Every salon.. expensive or not want me to be like every other lawn guy land head of hair. So tired of it all .. I actually cut my own hair for over a year. Not Recommended! Recently I saw a friend of mine who also struggled with her curls and she looked great and recommended curl Evolution. I went about a week ago and I have never had so many compliments on my hair. I had my hair cut and styled by a stylist there and she made me look like a lion. It was awful. When she finally had me flip my head, my curls had lost the definition they had when they were wet and i was left with a sort of deflated curl/wavy poof of a hairstyle. A good stylist will ask you how you style your curly hair to know what is best and how it is most likely to respond. As soon as I got into my car, I put my hair in a pony tail. This is not the first time I've been disappointed by their service. It's actually the third but definitely the most disappointed I've felt leading me to NEVER return. read more

How could anyone with straight hair know what's its like to deal with long, curly, frizzy hair! You can't learn everything. My first visit and I was so excited. I made sure to ask for a very experienced person and they assured me they were giving me just that. The girl was around 24 or 25 at most. I have many issues that are very sensitive to me and this girl, although nice, had no idea what to do with my hair. The cut she gave me I could have gotten at my neighborhood hair salon, in fact, the cut has been better. I don't know what I expected other than I thought going to a curly cut salon, I was going to get something better. I don't need your products, in fact, I didn't even like them better than the ones I use already. I don't need an education on curls, I've had this hair my whole life! $120 for what I got was highway robbery plus, I left a $20 tip. I ran out of there and cried the whole ride home. Also, if this employee still works there you should avoid her at all cost, please! Before hand I had called to ensure that this salon had experience with 4c hair type. Over the phone they were like "yea, of course! a lot of our cliental's have 4c hair". I was excited being this was the first time EVER going to a hair salon to do my natural hair. I travelled all the way from QUEENS to their Babylon location. When I got there, Amanda was taking care of me. I took of my wig and explained to her this was my first time and I was nervous. She continues to give me a "dry cut" which I neveerrrr heard of, but she's the professional so I'm like okay. Pause- I walked in with my hair shoulder length not damage at most needed a trim. After this "dry cut" she washes my hair for no more than 5 mins. Got up my scalp was still itching.... THEN something just told me touch your hair. When I touched my hair!!! It was NECK length in my head I'm like WHAT THE FUCK!!! didn't ask for a cut, but a trim! This Amanda girl proceeds to run some gel in my hair and scrunch it a few time and volia she was done...I never felt so ugly walking out a salon in the middle of fall with WET HAIR! The betrayal was soooo reallllll. The only decent this company did for me was give me a call back and refunded my whole money. I went to Curl Evolution for a first visit curly cut and had an appointment with a stylist who I was recommended to by the receptionist as someone who knows how to work with my hair texture (4b/c tightly coiled hair). I came with my hair in the well-defined curls I sport when I do wash and gos. The cut was good and so was the wash and deep conditioning treatment which left my hair feeling soft. However, the styling did not highlight or enhance my 4b/c curl pattern. The stylist created large finger coils that did not match my natural curl pattern. Furthermore, since the stylist did not finger-coil my hair to the root, when she proceeded to complete my look by diffusing it the result was really poofy roots with large coils at the end. While I appreciated the stylists' care and effort the fact is that she did not use the methods that enhance more tightly ringed curls like my own (i.e. using a denman brush to define the curls, smaller finger coils that follow and enhance the hair's natural curl pattern, and the use of gels with stronger hold like Eco Styler). I felt especially disappointment because during my appointment I watched as several other clients in the salon who had looser curl patterns were styled in ways that complimented their hair texture and left their curls looking beautiful. In my opinion, if you have kinkier curls Curl Evolution is a viable option for you to get your hair trimmed especially if you do not want to have to trek into the city. However, based on my experience, for kinkier curls I would not have them style your hair if you already have a method that you know can leave your curls looking beautiful. read more

They say they have appointments for 6:30PM for a root color and glaze and then when you book it they email you that they can't do a color at 6:30PM - it is too late to do color........really don't get it. Great salon for curly hair gals! I have only had a blowout done here but it is the ONLY place that can do my hair curly. I have loose beach waves more than an actual curl and the girl who did my hair did a great job. I will say, I wasn't a huge fan of the product she used on my roots, it made my hair feel dirty by the end of the day, but I also know it takes a LOT of product to get my hair to curl. I would definitely recommend this place for curly haired girls, though they do work with straight haired clients too. read more

She actually even contacted them through Instagram and their only response was "I'm glad you talked to someone " very unprofessional. So she cut way too much hairoff. Thinned out her hair .
