I went by the other day to drop off a bag of clothes and see what they would take and almost didn't go based on the reviews here. While they did only take one item and the rest will go to goodwill, the staff was extremely friendly and efficient. I was worried based on others experiences that this wasn't going to be worth it, but they gave me clear feedback on why they couldn't take certain items and allowed me to ask as much as I wanted. The selection in the store was also pretty good as I had time to shop while waiting for them to review my items. It was well organized and clean. I was in the neighborhood and wanted to see how much I could consign my light pink Gucci leather backpack for. I was currently using the bag so I removed my personals so the associate could inspect my bag. After she punched the serial number in the computer she said "sorry I am going to pass on this item". A well known online consignment shop offered me $500 for this same bag and is selling it for $850 so I was surprised when Current wasn't interested. It's a spring/summer color and a sought after brand. Guess I will go with the online buyer and won't waste my time trying to consign anything here. I've been here a few times now. Don't need to come anymore really. To those that go in- get the google app and reverse image search anything you like- here's why- I found a Marc Jacobs bag in store for $110, reverse image searched it and found it for $35 on posh mark new with tags and authentic. Same with a coach bag. This store takes the original price and marks down a percentage from that- they would do a lot better if the look at the consumer demand/market value and sell off that. Passing on this store until they change the pricing! You can get on a resale app for significantly cheaper ladies:) Also a side note- they need a music change in the store. It's very base rap, it would be more fun to shop in with something upbeat! read more

Current Boutique - How much I got paid for purchased items in April - Accessories Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I was looking up the store hours and noticed a bunch of 1 star reviews and felt like it would be helpful to offer an alternative perspective. I truly think this is a 5 star "great" boutique, not perfect, but yeah it's pretty great. Here's why. As the name says, this is a boutique, not a huge thrift store, which has implications as both a buyer and a consigner. As a buyer, it means I can go in and find a good selection of recent, stylish clothes in good shape, and appropriate for the current season. I have found a LOT of great buys this way, and when the price feels too high, I just skip it and move on with my life. As a consigner, it means that they are more selective in what they agree to take. They have to believe they can sell it within 90 days, meaning it has to be the right season, a size they are in need of, and more of a statement or classic piece rather than a staple like t-shirts or sneakers, no matter the condition. Knowing this, I only bring things in I think they might actually take. Even then, it's not a guarantee, and I'm ok with that. A lot of the negative reviews take issue with the consignment terms, but they've always been clear to me, and nobody is forcing you to consign, so if you're not ok with it then sure, sell online or somewhere else. They do not pay you at drop off like Buffalo Exchange, only after the item sells. If it doesn't sell at all, you don't get to come take it back. To me, that's acceptable since most of my items do sell and I'm not consigning to make top dollar. I'm consigning to reduce waste, extend the life of good quality clothes, and get some cash which I usually use as store credit on other fun new finds. I really do get why someone might want to sell items somewhere else where they get a bigger percent of the sale price. But I don't feel like photographing and posting things online, and I like that I have a neighborhood spot I can easily walk to and drop things off. I always stay while they sort, and whatever they don't take, I usually drop off at SOME, Goodwill, or another donation center. They will donate on your behalf but sometimes I have second thoughts and keep things so I usually just take it home to check before I go. Anyways, if you are considering consigning here, that's the deal, and it has worked well for me. It feels like doing a clothes exchange with friends, passing along things that still have plenty left going for them, and refreshing my own wardrobe with fun finds that are new to me. Fashion can be really wasteful but it doesn't need to be. Current boutique is the first place I stop whether I'm clearing out or adding new pieces. Five stars, yay! read more

This was my first post-COVID visit to the Current Boutique on 14th St (which is now located in the 1300 block in the former Buffalo Exchange digs). I was a bit underwhelmed. Maybe it's because I went toward the end of a season -- but I found nearly all of the clothing and shoe options to be unappealing. I ended up buying only one thing (a cropped denim jacket for $17) and even then, I need to check my records because my store credit balance (from previous consignments) seemed lower than it should have been. So I need to look into that and make sure they haven't stiffed me out of any money. As for the store itself, I like the much brighter interior and better dressing room area of this new location. That said, parking is even more of a nightmare than it was when they were farther up 14th. Also, I like that the sales people promptly greeted you when you came in. But I ended up having to hold my try-on items for way too long before someone offered to start me a fitting room. When the employee finally came over to grab them, she actually apologized because she had been pricing someone's consignment items and thus had been unavailable for like 30 minutes or more. My one other gripe with this place is that the music they were playing was definitely not the radio edit. They were playing what sounded like all female R&B artists, but there were so many raunchy lyrics and four letter expletives in all the songs that it turned my stomach. I got a good listen to about 4-5 songs while in the dressing room. The music was terrible and should not have been played in this setting. It just added to what was a lackluster visit! Given the limited selection, terrible parking, and offensive music, I can only give 3 stars at most and will have to try again next season. read more

I'm upset that I consigned with this store but never got back from them. The original store at this location was also a consignment shop but they just took stuff in and gave you half of their sale price right away. About 3 weeks ago, I took my stuff there and waited for a long time until the woman there finished her call. When it was my turn, she only took three name brands that were new with tags. She even rejected two that were also name-brand and new, saying they wouldn't sell well. She asked me to fill out two forms with my name and address and said they would send a check. She said I'd be notified within a few days. I was surprised by this method but did what she asked me to. I heard nothing from them since. I went into the store and they said they were still working on stuff in March. I called in a few times. And they said they were still working on things in late March and I would receive an email when they finished mine. They only took 3 things from me. The previous store could do it right away why would it take 3 weeks? I was very disappointed reading from the consigners here that their name brands are only worth a couple of dollars as "half" of the price they would sell. Are you kidding me? I couldn't find name brands lower than $20 in the store. There was an LV wallet and they were selling it for like $500. -- If you go to eBay, you could find much better price. --- Problem is, has the consinger received half of this price? Based on the reviews here, that person probable only received about $50 if I am not wrong. It looks like the shop has 3 stars because of the buyer, not the consigners. The 1-star reviews overwhelmingly came from the consigners. It does seem to me this is a rip-off store. They make money out of you, the consigners, and that's a lot of money. There's no business ethics here, and it could be sued, as one of the viewers said here. From my experience with the consignment store previously there, the selling price was exactly the same they gave me. The method the current store is using to pay the consigners gives extra room for cheating. When people turned to a consignment store because of the pandemic, it's not moral to make money out of this. They're picky on taking things in, so you can find many name brands in the store at a very high price when many consigners received single-digit back. Consigner review ~ This was a totally seamless experience with excellent service. I had selected a bag of my "highest end" stuff to bring here, and they only took my Acne pants and a NWT One Teaspoon dress -- BUT, they told me exactly why they couldn't take the other things. That was helpful and made the rejection not annoying. Thennn I had three other bags of lower end stuff to bring to Buffalo Exchange. Long story short, Buffalo Exchange rejected about 90% of it, so I decided to come back to Current to have them look at a few more things I hadn't shown them and have them donate the rest for me (an awesome & convenient option.) They ended up taking three items Buffalo Exchange rejected... two Free People tops and a Sexpot Revenge denim jacket. Ironic af since this store is million times more high end than Buffalo Exchange... but we'll get into that more in my review for them. So I definitely recommend consigning here - and shopping here as well! I only gave the store a quick skim, but it looked like they had a ton of cute stuff. Only four stars stars because I couldn't find anything in the time I was there (about 30 mins), but will be returning! I came here over thanksgiving break and was impressed with the inventory and the amount of it! I'm always skeptical about thrift/consignment shops but this one has been the best one I've seen regarding items out on the floor, designer/name brands, and amount of inventory. I saw some Kate Spade, hunter rain boots, Adidas, and a pair of jimmy choos that weren't my size sadly. They also had a wide size range, from 00 - 14/16. Im midsize (10/12) and definitely feel like I could find something if I had more time so I will for sure come back for a longer amount of time! The store was also super organized, by size, and even by type of fabric/occasion (denim, velvet, or business, cocktail). I shop better when stores are organized and I definitely liked that. They also had formal pieces and athleisure. I read the reviews before I came, and other Yelpers mentioned a bag policy. You do have to let them search your bag (over a certain size) when you come in, and they hold it behind the counter (my mom was carrying a leather tote). My mom didn't mention them being rude or anything (she's worked retail at Ann Taylor), but I can see how the bag policy can be a little invasive/awkward since its basically a thrift store. read more

This store was suggested to me a little over a month ago by a friend, and I decided to actually visit last week. I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff, the orderly manner in which the clothes was organized, and the guidelines in place to tackle COVID. My shopping was an easy, breezy experience and the young ladies behind the counter helped me along the way to make informed, fashionable choices. I hope to visit soon to consign a few articles of clothing that have grown a little dusty in my closet. P.S. I was a little surprised to see that there was no tip jar/option to tip the staff. Unfortunately management or the owner here is FATPHOBIC. This is a true bummer for someone looking to consign. I dropped off a huge quantity of excellent condition, name brand work clothes and they were only willing to consign a few items. When I asked the girls going through the items if it was based on style or what the issue was, they responded they are only allowed to accept up through a size 12, and even so are not allowed to accept too many mid or plus size pieces. Since the average American size is a 16, this was truly disappointing. They even asked my size 2 friend who was just accompanying me to the store if she had anything to consign. I was honestly disgusted by this fatphobic and offensive policy. Definitely not the girls' faults, it clearly is a top-down issue. I have been here as a customer and had a fine experience, but I would not consign here. The reason? If you send items to be consigned, and they don't make the cut, your stuff gets donated. I'd rather schedule an appointment and just come back, and then get to choose what I do with my rejected items. Seems other sellers have had issues with this system as well. Lots of shoes and bags, and other accessories too. I think that they had a pretty nice selection of items to choose, unfortunately, I was unable to find anything that tickled my fancy. This is mostly a consignment shop for fashionable women's clothing, plus shoes and accessories. There's also some new clothes available. It's bigger than it looks from outside, because the space runs pretty far back. Because of the sheer volume of clothes here, it takes a while to look through everything. I wish there was more organization, like by price point (which varies widely), or all the small shirts on one rack, mediums on another, etc, instead of having all sizes on every rack. There were more dresses than anything else (tons!), I'd say, though none caught my eye as I quickly skimmed through the racks. The item I came closest to buying was a J Crew sweater, but at 30-something bucks, it was a tad more than I was willing to pay for it (especially since I don't care about brand names). There were a number of items actually that would've been more interesting if priced a few bucks lower. Brands and quality were very mixed, but items on both ends of the spectrum were largely priced a little above what I would pay. However, I was skimming through pretty quickly, and I would definitely come back and poke around again in hopes of better luck when I have more time to really search. I think the massive quantity of clothes and accessories for my approximate demographic pretty much guarantees finding some winners. read more

I was drawn into Current Boutique by their trendy storefront, which featured mannequins sporting cute dresses and necklaces. First, I sifted through the new clothing in the front of the store, picked up a few pieces to try on, then moved on to the consigned section that comprises the bulk of the store. Each time I picked up an item, I was approached by a friendly staff member who offered to take the clothes off my hands and start a fitting room for me. After sifting through all the racks for about forty-five minutes and turning over a bunch of clothes to the salesgirl, I headed to the fitting area. The salesgirl pointed me to a rack where she had assembled my items and to my dismay, only about half of the clothes I'd spent nearly an hour picking up were there. Obviously, someone else had helped themselves to my clothes. When I mentioned this to the salesgirl, she said she didn't know what happened to the rest of the clothes. Luckily, the items that were missing were all new so I was able to grab a duplicate from the front section of the store to try on. I tried on all my items, but nothing fit quite right so I didn't end up making a purchase. I can't say I'm in a rush to revisit this store, but if I did stop in here again, I would carry my own clothes to the fitting room. It would be helpful if this boutique offered a shopping tote for customers to carry their clothes in while they shop! read more

Consigner - I've sold a few items with Current and it's been a great experience. They don't take all of my items but I expect that - I've got some fun/nice clothes but I am not exactly the height of fashion! I've consigned with Buffalo Exchange before and it has always been awful. They are often snooty/rude - I feel SO judged. So I was a little nervous about coming here! The girl who went through my stuff at Current was polite, did not give off any judgmental airs, and was very straightforward. I was able to shop around while they went through my items. The process is clear and transparent and I love that you can check on the status of your items online. I think they list items at an appropriate price and I am always satisfied with my 50%. Shopper - they have such a fun variety of items in all price ranges! I love coming here to look for dresses, shirts....everything. The staff seem to enjoy working here and enjoy the clothes. When I sent over 40 pieces of clothing in last June 2017 they only accepted 10 of the pieces, even though all were listed on their list and in perfect condition and trendy. It was a combination of 3 daughter's closets. I see they have only 7 pieces now listed in consignment. So what happened to the other 3? Not one item has sold? This is terribly disenchanting. I would have loved to have given some of my clothing away rather than donate them to a consignment shop. Thredup at least always gave me something. I finally got to check out this store since I was early for brunch just a few doors down. This happens to be the third location of Current Boutique that I've visited, and I figured that this location would have more fun/different things than the Arlington and Alexandria locations. Did it really have more fun things? I think so - and I definitely thought the shoe selection was funkier than the other stores. Different? Well, yes, if different means a lot more higher end stuff. Then again, this location is WAY bigger than the other ones. Unfortunately, I only had about 25 minutes to spare. GRRR. I found a really unique sweater that I loved but thought about the use I'd get out of it. Realistically, probably a handful of uses, so I passed. I found yet another that I loved, but my vow to stop buying camel and black prohibited me from purchasing that as well. But, I needed at least a couple of colorful skirts to add to my wardrobe, so I pressed on. I tried on 4 really fast, and immediately liked 2 of them. Since I was in such a hurry, I took my 2 lovely skirts to the register and waited for my total. Note to self: Look at price tags. I had no idea they were $27.95 (J Crew) and $18.95 (Banana). Here's the thing. Those prices aren't bad at all, right? I mean, I've paid more for a tank I loved at Banana BUT I think the price is a little high for 2 consigned skirts that basically JUST cover my ass. Thank goodness for tights. I just really felt that the prices were higher than those at my fave location - Alexandria. Maybe I'm just crazy. I'll make sure to check the skirt prices the next time I stop by that store. So, in 25 minutes, I bought 2 skirts that'll last a while, at a reasonable price. Imagine what I'll find when I have more time! Do not consign with these guys. They take expensive name brand items, like Anthropologie, and give you $5-7 as your "half." And yet in their Current Boutique stores I've never seen an Anthro item for $10. So it's very clear consigners are literally getting pennies on the dollar, and much less than the half they are promised. This is what is known as false advertising. What a money maker Current Boutique must be for the owners - rip off consigners for their name brand items, then sell at near-new prices. Amazing they not been sued - there is clearly something shady going on. read more

I've sold/tried to sell here for a few years. The items I do give to them to sell I notice are consistently sold at a *very* low price - you as the consigner get half the price they sell the item for. However, you don't know what they will price the item at when you give it to them. Based on how much money I receive if the item sells, they're apparently selling the items at very low prices - expensive, designer brands. Yet, as a consumer, nothing in their store is that cheap. For example, my split for a designer shirt was ~$3. I have never seen a non-H&M/Zara-type shirt in that store for $6. The split is clearly not 50/50. You are much better off selling to The Real Real, using Poshmark, etc. read more

As much as I wanted to like Current Boutique. I can't. And here's why... The employees have the worst attitudes. Upon entering the store, we were never greeted. Even walking around the entire store, not one smile, or "hello". However, I noticed them greet a lot of other customers upon walking in. I was with my girlfriend and friend. We are a group that are visibly queer, people of color and disabled. Not sure if that had anything to do with the fact. But sure seemed so, since they had no problem saying hello to everybody else who wasn't. I ended up making a purchase. I smiled, said hello and the employee still didn't bother to look at me or say a word during the entire transaction. Ridiculous. The prices are overpriced. The brands that they hike the prices up for aren't worth it. Especially when you compare them to other consignment/trade stores like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads Trading. They do not price accordingly based on brand name and condition. The styles here are outdated. They have a lot of styles that could easily be found in an actual thrift store or on clearance racks for much cheaper (and some better conditions). Don't get me wrong, there were some cute items but again just really overpriced. I got lucky and snagged a super affordable no brand clutch. But it doesn't happen often! I've been shopping and consigning at CB since the store opened. My items always sell which is why I have continued to come back. Today was an unpleasant experience. Came in with three duffel bags full of purses, clothes and shoes. Drove a long distance in the rain with a toddler and had to circle for parking. All for the store manager to accept 4 items out of the maybe 50 items I brought in. This has never happened before! What truly bothered me was her ELITISM. When I asked what was wrong with my items, one of the explanations was that my BCBG pumps (for example) weren't high end enough. I looked at her puzzled and she explained by saying they weren't Gucci. And their not-brand-new status would have been acceptable had they been Gucci. This was absolutely elitist and absurd statement to make, as CB sells a wide range and Gucci has NEVER BEEN THE BAR SET FOR THIS STORE. She may not have realized what she was saying, but it was definitely a poor poor choice of words to convey the store's standard. The visit felt like a COMPLETE waste of time and her statement really upset me, making me wonder why I support this store as much as i do. read more

I've only consigned clothing with them, never purchased. For all the people who think the clothing is expensive, frankly I'm surprised because I didn't see any of it in my checks -- and I've asked because they seem to have a good system of recording what an item sold for. Well, that's IF an item makes it into their system. My first drop-off was to test out the store and the process and to see if we were on the same page about their market. I'm not going to waste our time if my clothes don't meet their demand. They accepted everything I gave them -- about 12-15 items -- AND sold all of them too. I had to call twice for a check; their staff forgot to put in my first check request. Overall, though, I was pleased. My next drop-off was much larger, made up of generally the same brands but from a different season. However when I called for the check, I learned 3/4 of those items never made it into their system. They apparently just disappeared. Oh, and it was my fault for dropping them off. If I wanted to know what happened to them, I was told that I "should have stayed and waited while an employee checked them in." I can accept that a couple of items might have been rejected, but most were in great condition (clean, pressed, nothing over-washed). I was told they were "probably" donated. Really? Clothes still with tags, still being sold in stores? Hmm. Right. So consign at your own risk. read more

Finding something perfect for you can be pretty hit or miss, which is obvious. But they have a lot of variety. The clothes are clean and in great condition. However, several items are pretty overpriced. For example - saw some dresses from Loft that I could get in store during one of their big 40% off sales for probably the same price if not cheaper than what was listed at Current. And finally, chatted with an employee who said some pretty insulting things about other consignment shops in the area which I found... off-putting. I was already a costumer, not sure why she felt the need to so harshly bad-mouth the competition. It's not my favorite spot, but I'll certainly give it a few more chances. read more

I went to Current yesterday midday and it was completely empty except for three young sales women. They were going on about something or the other and not very attentive. When we came in, they greeted us and pretty much left us alone. Every time I looked up, they were starring at us which was kind of awkward. I wouldn't say they were snooty but they were acting kind of Georgetown boutique-ish. The clothes were great. There was a large range from every price point and they weren't over saturated with H&M and Forever 21. They had nice pieces from Theory and Marc Jacobs as well as original pieces. I do agree that the prices were rather erratic. The best part was the jewelry. The store is huge and they have their necklaces and bracelets displayed everywhere. There's a large selection of many different types of clothing with a wide range of prices. I was able to find lots of things I love. They have lots of unique pieces and many high quality basic items. I will definitely come back! read more

I stumbled into this place when I was visiting family, and I kind of wish I hadn't...it looked appealing from outside, but it was a piñata of disappointment on the inside. First of all, as someone who buys designer both new and in season and on Nordstrom Rack/TheRealReal etc, these prices are bizarre. You may as well just buy brand new for cheaper. The whole store seems to be cultivated by a character from an early 2000's sorority movie. It's really falling flat in terms of appealing to more than like...one person. It lacks in variety, the prices are gaudy and let's face it- this business is a monoculture. I can't tell if it's intentional or not; but everything from their hodge podge of Tory Burch and fast fashion brands, staff and branding suggests that its whiter than Mr Clean in a bath of Oxyclean.
