Well, SOMEbody has leveled up the coffee game in old downtown Shawnee and that game has reset the bar BIGLY. In an old light industrial space, Current State has brought us 'Kansas coffee', a blend of kaffehaus vibe, an airy interior, and an artisanal approach to their roast. This area has been dying for the local serious coffeehouse frequenters to stay closer to home and avoid chain-y Seattle stuff. Current State might just become one of those places that I LOVE....but I get grumpy when too many others love it, too. Because crowded. Their roast, done live & in-person on Tuesdays, ranges from a lighter touch to the near-charcoal-Vienna-ish levels. I like me a dark roast, but IYKYK: too dark and it's like your coffee was brewed with Kingsford. But not HERE! Current State has exceptionally well-crafted flavor profiles, hand-roasted beans by artisans and then bagged on site. Those flavors make their way into any number of coffee beverages, or even just the drip itself if the humdrum customer (like me) just likes a cuppa joe. The pastry selection is not ginormous but the tastes are super-diverse. My most recent visit had me sampling a slab of Horchata Coffee Cake, and my lawd, was it sensational! Yes, it's still all crumbly on top, but the subtle Central American spice blend rings all the way through that loaf - unique and divine all at once. That was a perfect tag-team partner with my big honkin' cup of house roast, hot and perfect for my morning. Parking is old town/downtown Shawnee, meaning you can street park or use a city lot. Pricing is pretty much on par with local competition but the value is well past the price point. Great open space inside with free Wi-Fi, a smattering of bistro-style tables out front, and plenty of tranquility. Love seeing this entry to Shawnee and hope it becomes an anchor! read more

Current State coffee has a lot going for it. First of all it's in a really cool old building right in the heart of Shawnee. I know this area of town also has a McLain's but honestly it's nice to see another great local spot serve the coffee shop crowd in this downtown strip. There is ample parking if you go behind it, which you will need on a busy morning as this cafe is big and holds a ton of folks. On the weekday I was there to take a meeting, I wasn't the only one. It was packed with folks working, which was nice to see. It felt very community centered. My coffee was really tasty, which is really why you're here right? My only knock was that the barista working was really unfriendly and turned my excitement about this spot way down a notch after interacting with them. Perhaps that was a one off but regardless I'll go back and just hope for a more cheery employee. read more

This coffee shop has a cool vibe. Plenty of seating, inside and out. They also have street parking and a small parking lot. We were greeted as soon we walked in. I got their caffe nico and my husband got their hazelnut latte. We both enjoyed our coffees and I loved that the nico has real orange in it!! Our only complaint is that we wish they had larger coffee sizes. We also tried their chocolate chip cookies....OMG!! Amazing and they even have a little salt on top to enhance the flavor. I really like the atmosphere and overall vibes here - the staff is always super friendly and willing to answer any questions you might have. I've been here twice now trying different drinks and pastries and each time I've left satisfied! The first time I came I ordered the honey and nougat latte which wasn't overly sweet (which I appreciated) and a guava concha that they outsource from Aurora Bakery. I feel like I've waited so long for this spot to open and now it did! And I went! Nothing about it was disappointing. The staff was warm and friendly as soon as I walked in. They answered all my coffee questions and my order came up quickly. The space was roomy with high ceilings and plenty of table and chairs. Most of them were full! A great experience and will be back. This new coffee shop is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood! The space itself is large and welcoming, with tons of seating options like stools, chairs, and a sofa. The coffee is really good, and they have a great selection of fresh pastries and quick grab-and-go sandwiches. While they don't have a dedicated parking lot, there are plenty of easy parking options close by. What really stood out to me was the customer service--everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I was so excited about a new coffee shop not far from my home that stayed open later than two! My husband and I decided to try it out together. It was very busy, which was to be expected since it is brand new to the area. The nice thing is that it is large and has a good amount of seating. There are a variety of tables with wooden chairs. There is a couch and a short table in front of it. There's also a movable rolling high top with stools next to the garage door style window, which can be moved for fresh air if they open it. They also have quite a bit of patio seating out front. The barista that served us upon ordering was friendly. I ordered an iced latte with oat milk and sugar-free vanilla. This is my typical drink when I go to coffee shops. My husband ordered a honey nougat latte with an added flavor that I can't remember right now. I saw on a real that it looks like they offered baked goods, but I did not see any at that time so maybe they were sold out? Anyways, even though it was busy, we found a table. It took quite a while for the order to be made because it was busy. When I went to get our order, I believe that my husband's drink was an error because he remade it. Unfortunately I had to throw away my latte because it the sugar-free syrup was extremely saccharine tasting. Some coffee shops have perfectly good sugar-free syrups and quite a few do not have good ones. My husband always orders a hot latte and he never uses any sweetener. But he didn't even finish his either because he said a bitter aftertaste in his mouth and I could tell if I continue to drink mine. I would probably have some acid reflux issues. This rarely happens and I frequent a wide variety of coffee shops throughout KC. So that was quite disappointing. So I decided to go up in order a hot herbal tea. I was a little bit irritated because there was a guy in front of me ordering and then I was next. And then they just literally let me stand there and ignored me. Finally, the same barista who was nice turned around and saw me and came over (he had been making drinks) and took my order. The tea was good and I continue to enjoy that and read my book that I usually do a coffee shops. The lighting is good in the shop, but the playlist was a bit too loud and reminded me of a brewery playlist, generally distracting. So nevertheless, I was disappointed because the coffee just was too bitter for our personal preference. I'm sure they will have great success since they are on the main Johnson Drive strip and next to many of the breweries and bars. read more

I've already been here twice during Current State's opening week. I've gotten a pour over and cold brew. My husband got a vanilla latte and said "this is the best one I've ever had". I LOVED my pour over. And the cold brew was wonderful too. The ambiance is wonderful and industrial. And I've learned the the owners and workers have 120+ years of coffee experience combined so it's no wonder this will be one of Shawnees best coffeehouses now. The service was wonderful even during their first Saturday with a line wrapping around in store and so worth the wait. 10/10 would recommend to drive and check them out!! read more

The food (drink and pastry) that I had on my 2nd visit was great, would rate that a 5 On my first visit (left without ordering because of reasons below) and this visit there was no inside seating available as 90% of the table space was occupied by single people on computers making it their personal office space. There is outside seating BUT in the morning it is all in the sun and there are no umbrellas. Would love to see them limit time for those on computers or ask that they share tables or use the window ledge seating or large table. Since so many shops are bright white and feel corporate, Current State feels warm and welcoming that we have been missing in the KC metro area.
