Great eastern NC bbq! I make a point to stop here on my way to/from the outer banks every year, and it never disappoints. Pulled chicken and pulled pork are great, and I love the slightly spicy vinegar-based eastern NC sauce on the pork. Sides are also decent, especially the mashed sweet potatoes and coleslaw. They also have very good hush puppies. Parking is plentiful and they have both inside and outside, covered seating. Prices are extremely reasonable, even for bulk items and family sized meals. The food here is nothing special unless you like grease and more grease. I have been here twice now. The second visit was because a friend wanted to try it against my advice. When we arrived there was a fairly long line. A busload of cheerleaders from a local high school was dining here. A woman in front of us had placed an order on the phone so she wouldn't have to wait and went to the front to see if her order was ready as she was told it would be. They sent her to the back of the line and told her she would have to wait her turn. What? What is the point of ordering on the phone if you are going to have to wait for walk-ins? We offered to let her get in front of us again, but she didn't want to. She was disappointed and angry as were we by the sheer disrespect and thoughtlessness displayed toward her. The building sits on a dirt and partial gravel lot. The outside is outdated to match the inside. The tables have not been cleaned both times I have visited. The trash cans inside were overflowing so I had to leave my styrofoam container on top of the trash bin with a tray holder so that my leftovers would not spill out on the floor. The bathroom may have been the cleanest place in the building. Perhaps they would do well to put tables in there. Not. On this visit, I had the pulled pork. I swear they bought out all the Brookwood Farms Carolina Style BBQ from the nearest Food Lion. The fries weren't bad at all and hot to boot. My friend had the burnt ends were good until about halfway through when the saltiness and grease starts weighing you down. The desire to finish the meal is about a zero on a 1-10 scale. Canned sides anyone? Stick with the fries. Two stars for the young man taking orders. He deserves five stars. He was pleasant and very likable. He got the order right and had a happy demeanor. I believe I overheard someone say he was the owner's son? He's the only reason this restaurant gets any stars. I love mom and pop places. Myself and a buddy were on the way back home from OBX and hit this spot because of the glowing reviews and overall rating. Both BIG foodies, and lovers of barbecue and backyard smoking novices. We were thoroughly excited to experience some authentic NC BBQ; and our expectations were further heightened by the sight of a large line and almost full seating arrangement. I ordered brisket and chicken with Mac and cheese and fries; my buddy order brisket and pork with the same sides. I was a little surprised to have received shredded brisket instead of sliced brisket. The brisket was danced in sauce after being shredded; overall, not bad. But no bark to taste their rub, not much smoke, decent beef flavor. The chicken, I mostly just tasted the sauce although it was tender but again under seasoned. I tried by buddy's pork, and it wasn't pretty to look at. A grey, mush like, mass of zero to little flavor or texture. The pork was the biggest let down by far, although it was not sauced, I feel like they're relying too much on the sauce to be a saving grace. The Mac n cheese was average at best, the fries were nothing special. The hush puppies and cheesecake were the only food ordered that met expectations of what a local NC BBQ shack should be serving. Overall, the food felt lazy and lacking passion; I would not recommend to anyone seeking out good BBQ but more so recommend it to someone looking for a quick meal on their trip south to the OBX. read more

I didn't even like bbq when I was little. Now I love it. When we go to the beach, we stop by on the way home. Seating is limited so be prepared. I order the chicken bbq platter, usually. I don't mind pork, especially when I want that tangy taste, but chicken is my favorite. I order that chicken platter with fries, mac n cheese, and hush puppies. After a day at the beach there is nothing I want more than the platter I just listed. There is seating outside, but inside is where the air conditioning is. My family and I have been coming here for years, and though I have had other great bbqs in North Carolina, this one is and always will be my favorite. If you want some local, down home country barbcue. This is a place to try! Was in town for some business and had a hankering for some good finger licking barbcue. Did a quick search on Yelp and found this restaurant. Upon arrival I saw that this was the kind of place I was looking for. It was a small wooden building with a dirt parking lot just off the main road. Walked in and it was the epitome of a locals haunt. The smell of barbcue was in the air. Wood beams and walls lead to a counter covered in flyers where you ordered. You can get individual items or combination platters which I jumped on. Ribs, brisket, baked beans, mac & cheese with a couple of hush puppies. My buddy had the same except he added collards! Shudder the thought. But he is real southern and loves that stuff. The ribs were fall off the bone delicious. The brisket was tender with a nice selection of different sauces available to spice it up. The beans and the Mac was were on point. We drove by the Currituck BBQ restaurant many times on our way to and from Nags Head, and always wanted to stop and try it out. We finally did in Jan 2023. My wife and I ordered pulled brisket sandwiches, baked beans, sweet potatoes, and hush puppies. Our sandwiches didn't taste like brisket at all, and we're fairly confident that what we really got was pulled pork instead of brisket. Sandwiches also didn't come with pickles or a pickle on the side. My wife also thought the sweet potatoes were terrible and only ate about half of them. I had the hush puppies, which were small and very dry. Disappointed with our order, but maybe they just had new employees in the kitchen that didn't know what they were doing. read more

The pulled pork barbecue is excellent and reasonably priced. My family has enjoyed getting barbecue from Currituck for years.

From KC to Texas, Memphis, and through South Carolina... this is the worst BBQ I've ever had. How this place has good reviews is crazy. Maybe we hit it at a bad time, but the brisket was fatty, greasy, and completely bland. Cheap cuts of meat that weren't even remotely fresh. The onion rings (an additional charge) were a couple of low quality frozen ones. Fries (also frozen) were undercooked in old oil. Hush puppies were dense, flavorless, and overcooked. If we hadn't already driven 10 minutes away, I would've returned it... which I've never done. I've had excellent BBQ. This is beyond the bottom of my list. Save $20 (gag) and keep driving. We stopped here on the way back from the Outer Banks Sunday afternoon. No inside dining due to Covid. Excellent counter service. Everyone was so polite. The fried orca is some of the best I've ever had. Super crispy. The slaw was good as well as the bbq pork. Don't forget to ask for sauce! Hush puppies are fantastic as well. We were driving to the Outer Banks and stopped at this little roadside place for a late lunch. What a treat! I ordered a pork sandwich and my husband had the burnt ends sandwich. They had a special -- while supplies lasted -- of shrimp & grits as a side, so we both ordered that. I also got potato salad, and my husband got sweet potato casserole. Everything was scrumptious, especially the shrimp & grits. Even the hushpuppies were amazing! What was truly remarkable about this place however, was that everyone there seemed to take so much pride in their work. The people at the counter and even the guy wiping down tables and restocking napkins seemed to enjoy being there. This is our go to BBQ place. We live in Pasquotank county and drive 30 minutes for this BBQ. Definitely some of the best Eastern Style BBQ I've ever had. I've gotten the pork and the beef brisket both were very good. Nice vinegar base BBQ, not too salty, good amount of tangyness and flavor. I like all types of bbq but this is by far the best vinegar base. Also the sweet potato casserole is phenomenal. It has a very good balence of brown sugar and potato not too sweet. Great fried okra, mac and cheese, fries, all good. None of their fried food is greasy. They also make homemade roasted peanuts and peanut brittle. read more

Such tasty BBQ! We stopped here on the way back from an off-road beach area south of Norfolk by about an hour and change. I was not disappointed with our choice at all. I opted for the chicken and brisket platter with fried okra and max&cheese as my side dishes. Everything I chose was delicious. Unfortunately the brisket wasn't sauced but I can see how that would cater to some people who prefer to choose their own amount of sauce. Overall everything was very tender and delicious though.
