Really authentic North Carolina bbq. Chopped pork sandwiches & really good hush puppies. We agreed the Mac and cheese had really nice consistency but needed some seasoning. The sauces are really stand out and we also had some chicken chunks that I would suggest skipping. The sweet potato casserole was really sweet and a treat for sure. Location is between Chesapeake and the OBX so a little bit of a drive if you're in Hampton Roads, Elizabeth City location may be closer. To be fair we only had the chopped brisket and chopped pork for sandwiches. I wish it was more smoked but still very good. The location had really pretty outdoor seating so I'd still recommend the location if you're up for a quick bite. We didn't try any of the other sides so I can't say how they are but the hush puppies were absolutely amazing!!! For the price it was a good option for something to grab on the way home from the OBX.

Really good Eastern NC BBQ. Exactly what you'd want and expect in Carolina BBQ, smoky, salty and peppery with creamy slaw. Sides were excellent too. Great spot for lunch on the way down to the OBX from the 757.

Absolutely delicious BBQ! We drove from Chesapeake at the recommendation of new friends and we were not disappointed. We tried burnt ends, pulled pork, pulled brisket, French fries, sweet potato casserole, Mac and cheese, baked beans, hot dog, hush puppies, and potato salad. Every single meat and side was phenomenal. Perfect pricing, perfect portions. Service was awesome and they were kind and friendly. Building is older, but it adds to the small town bbq ambiance. Zero complaints. We will be back and highly recommend it!

Food here is really good. Affordable prices, very polite staff, portions are average. Restaurant interior is old but clean, and it is a great stop on the way to the beach. Highly recommend.

A place you don't want to miss

We didn't take any pictures of our food because it was so good we ate it up fast and even had a second helping. I am so glad we stopped The Hushpuppies were the best I have ever had; sweet tasting, yummieness. Would definitely stop again! Plus, the staff was very friendly and the restaurant was nice and clean.

I love stopping here halfway between the airport and OBX. I got the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw, extra slaw on the side and beans. tastes exactly the same every single time. Be sure to add some Texas Pete's and it is the best BBQ sandwich.

We were traveling back to Norfolk from the OBX, and though I was full because we had already eaten, I decided to stop and purchase a bottle of their North Carolina style BBQ sauce. The place was bustling and everyone appeared to be enjoying their food. I tried the sauce when I made it home to Louisiana and really enjoyed it. If I'm ever in the area again I'll definitely try some of the meats.

If you get the pulled pork sandwich, hushpuppies and fries it is PERFECTION. I could absolutely eat my weight in hushpuppies. THEY ARE LITTERALL THAT GOOD. The platters are not as good as my VA Beach local spot Im in love with so I will have to give them a solid 4. When we asked for Brisket I thought it would be a chunk of brisket. It was pulled meat. That is ok but I am spoiled when it comes to BBQ. They have a few sides to choose from. The potato salad is good but It taste like everyone else. Stick with the pulled pork sandwich and hushpuppies and you will be fine. DONT FORGET THE HUSHPUPPIES!!!!!! I'm hungry just talking about them.

This is our second visit. Super excited. Just a few mins away from Morris farmer market. Another. Must stop. Grab some napkins and thank me later.

The real deal for NC BBQ! No frills, just the way local folk like it. Plenty of seating, inside and out with ample parking and room for pets to take a nice break. When leaving the Outer Banks and heading north, hold your hunger past the beachy tourist joints until you get here. You will not be disappointed!

Always good BBQ, just wish they had not switched from their crinkle fries. All the other sides are fantastic.

Mediocre at best! This was very disappointing for my first North Carolina barbecue experience. I'll stick with Virginia bbq.

Not to worry, the cakes and pies come in single-serve slices. ;-) My all-time faves are the 3-layer Carrot Cake, Oreo Cake, Cranberry or Chocolate muffins...and of course the famous 12-layer cake that has the most perfect chocolate ganache throughout and all over the outside. Grab a 1/2 cake for your next potluck or gathering. OR, you can order ahead of time. Catering menus are at the register. Check out these ginormous babies I ordered for a backyard Southern Charm themed picnic a few weeks ago (trunk photo). I had no idea they would be so huge!. The cake boxes hold HUGE Pig-Pickin' cakes, which were DIVINE! (Fun fact: Pig-Pickin' cake is so named because it's the perfect cake to eat at a BBQ. Get it? Pig-Pickin' ). It's made of orange/pineapple/yellow cake/whipped fluffy deliciousness you will never forget. And those Key Lime Pies were the best I've ever had anywhere. I ordered Large pies, not knowing they'd be the largest I'd ever seen. We had about 40 people, so I had one full Key Lime AND a full Pig-Pickin left over that I had to give away. I just ordered WAY too much. Sad/not sad face. Most of our party guests were from Miami and island/South American countries, and even they raved about how best-in-class both desserts were. NOTE: Closed Sundays, so plan ahead! And always will be, in honor of late owner Kevin's final wish. :-)

As you walk in you note the feel of it being a converted diner made to look like a country place. You grab your own menu, seat yourself, and walk up to the bar/register when ready to order. If the first time, you need a minute to get your bearings. Food ordered (3% fee is not using the cash "discount" FYI, pretty common around here and absurd given these OBX prices). Drinks are self serve. Some coke products and excellent tea. This was the end of breakfast around 10:30/11, so it was empty. Service was pretty quick. (they bring it to the table). I thought the breakfast pricing was fair. Shrimp and grits for $12, etc. Especially for the portion sizes. Two things I didn't care for. -The ceilling tiles were crazy dirty and stained and the flor light bulbs were uncovered. -The shrimp and grits needs a re-do. It's huge, with a base of grits, ladels of bacon gravy, and about 5 shrimp and cheddar cheese. It's more like a shrimp, grits, gravy, cheese casserole. I would have much rather had a base of grits, the gravy scooped in the middle with shrimp stuck in it, and topped with cheese. Even with all that you'd think there would be flavor. It was kind of bland minus the occasionally greasy/burnt bacon piece. Also, the shrimp were flavorful but over-cooked and tail on, which is traditional--but in the casserole were a pain in the butt to get the tail off/cut. I know they can do good flavors and plates. My spouse's chicken biscut...omg the hand-breaded chicken was fantastic! My son's baked apples were to die for. You Philly visitors will be happy to see scrapples on the menu - yuck. All in, I would repeat and stick to chicken and the chicken coop.
