This place also has a huge menu so there's something for everyone! They have a variety of curry plates, bentos, poke, and even noodle dishes. Our go to is definitely the chicken karaage curry plate! The chicken is always crispy, a bit sweet, and super juicy! It balances out the slightly spicy and salty curry. We also love that there's vegetables in the curry (carrots & potatoes). We love that the curry comes in a separate container so no soggy chicken! We've also tried their gyoza which is always crispy and has a lot of filling inside. Most recently, I tried their miso salmon bento and that was so flavorful! It came with toss salad, edamame, and miso soup! At around $14 per plate, I think that's a pretty good deal for the amount of food you get!

It comes with the beef and a couple pieces of shrimp tempura. The two ontama eggs were additional toppings. Let's start with the beef. The beef is similar to eating the beef in sukiyaki. The beef is shredded thin so that you can taste the marinade. They also give you a good portion of beef. It's not filled with rice and a thin layer of meat on top. Quite the opposite. More meat than rice. The shrimp tempura is good. It's not like the shrimp tempura that you would find in a good Japanese restaurant with tentsuyu dipping sauce. It's as good or better than the shrimp tempura you can buy at Marukai or Don Quijote. It comes with the beef sukiyaki drizzle? It's good. The ontama eggs are perfect. Nice and runny when you break the yolk. It just pairs so well with the beef sauce. So yummy. Yelp deleted couple of my photos. I really hate that you can't share all the photos you took with my fellow yelpers. You take the time to review and take photos that I feel should be uploaded. One photo was for a 10% discount for students, military and senior citizens. With the cost of food nowadays, it's good to know that there are restaurants like this one out there willing to give discounts to those who could use it. I enjoyed the mochi quite a lot, the beef was a bit tough to eat, and I would note that the soft shell crab was extremely fishy. Like INEDIBLE fishy. I don't know if they always have it like that or if it was just an off one. Either way it was NOT pleasant. I've also had the poke nachos, shrimp/vegetable tempura, and various bento dishes--always at least solid. Finally, appreciate the servers. Depending on when you go, it can get busy, but we've never had to wait too long for food and waters get refiled/plates get cleared. The underneath parking can get tight as well. But the chicken katsu was one of the worst I've ever had on O'ahu. The chicken katsu was greasy and soaked in old oil that tasted rancid and oxidized, which made the panko a disappointingly saturated mess. The panko was way too browned, and neither flaky or freshly crunchy like katsu should truly be, and was a far cry from the photo in the menu. The poor, fatty chicken quality and the rubbery skin left on the chicken pieces just added to the gristly and chewy nature of the katsu. Charging customers these prices for this kind of subpar quality chicken is absolutely insulting, and we couldn't even finish the dish. It's such a disappointment to write this kind of review, but others need to know what they're getting when they order katsu at Gyotaku.

Here's more info on the Senior Special -- You have to be 60+ years old, it's daily from 4:00 - 5:00, it's pork nabe only (no substitutions) and the cost is $17. We always get the pirikara soup base. Love the taste -- they say it's a spicy garlic shoyu base but I don't think it's too spicy.. I actually add more togarashi to mine for a little extra kick. It comes with several thinly sliced pork slices, napa, choi sum, carrot, tofu, shiitake, kuzukiri (clear noodle), chives, and rice. It's the perfect combination and amount to satisfy! To make it even better, the Senior Special timing coincides with their daily Happy Hour -- how terrific can it get!! With Happy Hour there are drink and pupu specials that you can also enjoy. They have Happy Hour 2 times a day -- 4:00 - 6:00 and 8:30 to close. We order a Kirin pitcher and I always get a Melon Shochu. If you never tried their Melon Shochu, you should definitely give it a try. They put a whole melon Melona ice cream bar in their shochu mix. It is delicious -- almost feels like you're drinking a refreshing dessert. Oh.... did I forget to mention, it's a Happy Hour special, $7.00. Our waiter, Gabe, was AWESOME! There's plenty of parking right in front of the restaurant so parking is never a problem. The restaurant has a real inviting atmosphere with their modern Japanese decor throughout. Inside you can select either standard seating or Japanese style seating. Just a note - there's an opening for your legs so you don't have to worry about how you're going to sit through the whole meal. If you're over 60 and love nabe, I definitely recommend you coming for the Senior Special. I'm not sure how long the special is going to lasts but it's definitely a winner for us!

The broths (Rokaru broth in particular) are the most flavorful, the protein selection is the best, and the service is consistently outstanding. The self-serve veggie bar is our fave too since they've added fresh enoki mushrooms. For me, I load up on equal parts veggies & meats, so I don't feel too bad going hard on the AYCE haha!
