I've read some pretty negative reviews on yelp, but from my experience at Colonial they have been nothing but respectful and courteous when I'm in for service. I've had a couple minor issues with my legacy and they have gotten me in right away and haven't tried any 'shady' service tactics as some have reported. I have had a few Interactions with this business and I use them as a last resort . Not very customer driven . Last week I came in with low tire inflation light on , it was a Thursday and the woman at the desk said " come in Monday at 3:30 PM , I can't give you an appointment but we are less busy at that time . Borderline Fraudulent Booking Practices. Three weeks ago I called their service department describing the symptom of my car to them (engine eating issue) and being referred to book what they refer to as a "115 Engine Diagnostic". So I booked that. I come in this morning at 8 am and they asked me again what was wrong with it, asking if it had a check engine light on and I said it did, forgetting to mention the engine oil issue which I assumed would be covered by the 115 Engine Diagnostic, since why would somebody book me an appointment (3 weeks in advance, mind you) just to have me show up and then not actually diagnose my originally-stated engine symptoms (it was early and I had just rolled out of bed!). So I sign the agreement to pay for the $115 worth of "work" being done without reading the actual contract (I know, paperwork before coffee can be dangerous and I've learned my lesson now). I'm waiting in the waiting room and this woman comes out to quote me $500 plus on an air sensor replacement, which is the code that comes up. At this point I start to wonder about the scope of this so-called diagnostic. I ask her if that's the vast extent of what could be wrong with my engine. She suggests I would have to address this issue and then bring the car back to pay another $115 for another diagnostic. At this point I say OK and sit back down and wait for her and the mechanics to wrap it up. As I'm sitting here I realize I'm getting screwed so I get up to ask if they, since I'm paying over a hundred dollars for a diagnostic, are going to test my engine in a substantial way. This woman acts like because I didn't explain my symptoms from the start that it's my fault I'm not getting the right service, and that if that was the issue she would have referred me to a completely different service from the start. Okay, so you're saying after waiting 3 weeks on this diagnostic appointment referred to me by one of you after describing my issues is not even going to help me? PSA: FOR A 155 ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC All they do is scan your codes, something I get done for free where I got my car in the first place and something that Autozone, less than a mile away, will do for free and tell you essentially the same thing. To call this service an "Engine Diagnostic", to me, is a bit more than a stretch. I explained this position only to receive the response one might expect from individuals in a continual game of "gotcha." They got me, although I wonder what Consumer Affairs Kingston will think about this... Majorly disappointed. read more

This review is about their service department. When I went in for an airbag recall, I thought we could get a check of the brake system. (The light had come on once or twice due to fluid level). They said it would be a $57 charge and the explanation was that they had to pull all the wheels. So I said that we only had 40k miles and we only wanted them to plug it in to the computer (something Autozone does for free) and they said that it would be over $100. So we said to skip the check and just do the recall. We got a loaner which they explained we would have to pay .15 per mile "for gas". We asked if we could replace the gas and they said that was ok. The recall took longer so I was using the car over the weekend and when I returned it mid day on Monday I had all my stuff in it. They asked for the keys and I told them I needed to move all my things into my own car before I returned the loaner. They refused to bring my car out until I surrendered the key to the loaner - no discussion, that was their process. Ok, they checked the car in and Let me move my stuff. Then they said I had to pay .15 per mile. They said I was not allowed to replace the gas - that was their "process". My contract and an employee clearly said that we could replace the gas. So I had to wait while the service manager was summoned to approve the change. While he was there I complained about the awkward process of moving my stuff. I asked if he didn't trust me (there was no charge for the recall anyway) and he said that people have driven away without paying which confirmed that their "process" was for their revenue and not my convenience. I told them that this wasn't the type of customer service I was used to in this day and age and he recited his resume to me (what does that matter). I kind of expected an apology and a coupon or something. The person who was checking me out demanded my receipt for gas and then saw that it was higher than what she had computed for the .15 per mile. So she changed her story and said that the reason they charged .15 per mile was to save customers money. Turns out she had made a mistake in the calculation so armed with this erroneous information, she made up a lie to make me look foolish. My point is that their "process" is for their revenue protection and doesn't even consider customer satisfaction (or even convenience). read more

My husband and I had a lot of fun shopping for a car at Colonial Subaru. The staff is polite and extremely knowledgable. Scott Denny was a pleasure to work with. He worked out a great financing package, and I'll be bringing the car in presently to get a sun roof put in- so the car will be exactly what I want. My old car was a Jeep, and I had to fill it with gas every other day. I've had my new Subaru for about two weeks, and have only put gas in it once, so far. It's an incredible difference! I highly recommend this dealership- They have a great selection of new and gently used cars. They're worth the trip even if you're not in the Kingston area. read more

I've been searching for a Subaru recently and have been stopping at the majority of Subaru dealerships in the Hudson Valley and this was by far my worst experience. Upon walking into the sales room the three sales men all looked at me, and then went back to their conversation for a minute before anyone approached me. It was clear from the beginning to me that none of these men were taking me, a younger woman-alone, seriously. I asked for information about a certain model and everything they have available is completely over priced compared to all of the other dealerships I've been too and there was a big stain in the back seat of a used car I was shown that the sales man was completely unaware of. I took my 2000 Subaru there for a problem with the transmission. They told me it needed a head gasket and valve cover, new plugs, valve cover gasket (they said head cover gasket too but it was too expensive and did not seem at the root of the problem) total $800. That did not help the problem at all. I took it back suggesting it might be the fuel filter which they replaced and charged me for but also did not correct the problem.Then I took the car to New Hampshire for a visit and a dealership there told me it was the throttle sensor but could not get to it for a couple of days so I drive the car back to Colonial and had them do the throttle sensor at an additional cost. I complained about the excess work including the plugs, wires and fuel filter which was over $900 total and had nothing to do with the problem (I had a full tune up only 9 months earlier). The claimed I had the wrong plugs and wires (though they seemed to work just fine) and that I should at least do the valve cover gasket. I asked that they refund me some of the $800 that was un-necessary work and they did agree to a credit for $300. However every time I looked into using it the cost of the work they suggested was hundreds more than another mechanic I asked so I just had the work done there and have not yet been able to access the $300 credit. In fairness they were right about the head gasket and a year later I did have it done but for $400 cheaper than their price. read more

This place is the pits. I stopped in here about 2 weeks ago looking for a car within a price range; I'm working on a limited budget. But the more and more cars they showed me, the more it made me wonder the answer to one question: "What portion of elementary math did you not master, that made you think (in your wildest dreams) that $13,300 is between $10,000 and $12,000? Don't get me wrong: Your cars are okay, but with my budget, I can't afford that and I told you that, when I first arrived inside!" And it wasn't just once that you couldn't meet my budget, it was the price on two to three cars you had, so that's pretty poor salesmanship! read more

Colonial's service dept. changed the oil in my car, except they added a quart too much, which caused the excess oil to spill out onto hot areas of the exhaust while driving the car. There was a lot of smoke and it stunk. When I brought the car back and told them what happened, they promised to fix it. They drained the oil and refilled the crankcase, but guess what? They did the exact same thing again - they overfilled the crankcase and caused the same stinking mess. I won't be taking my car here again. read more

Brought my car in for an inspection and to fix a noise coming from the engine. I was told they get a fee for checking to see what the noise is and if they find it, that fee will go towards the labor to fix it. I was not a fan of paying to have someone look for a issue especially when the labor to fix it could be a small fraction of the price I paid for the fee but so be it. I left the shop with my inspection done and the sound was muffled and they said that was the best they could do. The sound came back about 3 weeks ago and I brought it to another shop who fixed it entirely and said he gets a lot of business from people who didn't like the service department here. read more

Can't comment on their sales team, but the service dept was AWFUL. I called to get pricing on a repair and they quoted me a certain amount, then when I took it in they said the exact same item was going to cost over $200 more!!! I said I would go elsewhere but they told us the car was disassembled and couldn't be driven without it. Seeing how we were trapped, they offered to give us a rental car for a few days until the repair was complete, which they told me over the phone and to my husband in-person. So my husband uses the rental to go to work the next day and they called stating we needed to return the rental immediately or we would have to pay additional charges. When I told them they said they had told both of us it would be several days they outright lied and said they told my husband only it would be done the next morning. My husband said they never said that, and he wouldn't have driven it to work that day if he had truly been made aware of that timeframe. They refused to work with us even though we had dealt with several rounds of rude customer service. The asst mgr wouldn't let me finish a dingle sentence and kept interrupting me just repeating the same thing over & over again. I was fed up with their bait & switch tactics and finally told the asst mgr "f-u" & hung up as I had never been treated so poorly in my life and couldn't take it anymore. I have never spoken that way to anyone but have also never been treated so poorly & disrespectfully. Not only had they continually jacked up the prices on their services, but then they blatantly called us liars with the car rental deal. If you ever decide to risk your car with these people, get EVERYTHING in writing first!!!!!! read more

This is my 2nd experience with Colonial . My first was that I went into the dealership (I was 59 yr old women at the time), and asked the sales person for the New Forrester 2014. The man claimed to have no idea of what I was talking about (the car had just come out, and I even saw one on the lot), and tried to sell me something else, asked me if I knew what I was talking about? Can you imagine? I quickly left. My daughter went in there as her dash lights were flashing like a screaming ambulance. Would not have had her go there, but it was close to her work, and easy for her to drop off. She asked them to simply check what her lights were flashing, and estimate for what was done. Not told ahead of time how much this would be, she was charged $145 for some kind of lap top aided search. They did fix a few recalls on the sensors, but to be charged this amount, for something auto zone does for free, or my local garage, is abominable. Will never go there for service again, or for purchase of a car. Their radio ads claim the best Subaru dealer in the Hudson Valley? This just urks me, as I KNOW they ask people to rate them high. I abhore when dealerships do that, especially when they're awful!!! Stay clear, stay far..DO NOT GO HERE! You will be ripped off! read more

Two years ago I bought a used Outback from another dealer. I recently had a tire with a damaged sidewall that needed replacement. I brought it to Colonial Subaru because they had the matching tire in stock. When I went to check out, I found that they weren't charging me for the tire because the previous owner had purchased the tires at Colonial and had opted for road hazard coverage. They honored a warranty that I had no way of knowing even existed. Based upon this level of honesty I will definitely continue going to Colonial for any service needs. read more

We test drove a 2015 Subaru Forester. Despite the fairly high price tag for the mileage, we liked the vehicle. Since Colonial does not certify its pre-owned cars (therefore does not stand behind them, in my view). we had a mechanic go out to the dealership to fully inspect the car. He gave the car a fairly decent rating, based on his computer tests, but made sure to tell us that he could not do a complete test because Colonial refused to allow him to test drive the car. The dealership claimed that this was because the mechanic didn't show them proof of insurance. (They didn't ask us to prove WE were insured when we took the car out for a drive.) The salesperson would not even agree to drive the car with the mechanic in the passenger seat. Since it seemed to us they might have something to hide with this vehicle, we did not purchase it, and asked for a credit on our $200 hold fee. We were told they could give us a credit if we came in so they could run our card! We live 40 minutes away, and this is in any event a very suspect practice. American Express fortunately agrees. read more

If you are looking for a Subaru, Colonial is a great place to buy, lease, and maintain one. The staff are honest, friendly, and knowledgable. Leases, sales, and financing are clearly explained and made uncomplicated. The service department is very effective and usually has any part needed. Over the years we have purchased a used Outback from them and leased 2 brand new ones (including, most recently, a 2014). Jeff Leone is an easy going (not pushy) salesperson. He found us exactly the car we were looking for and on short notice. We love our Subarus and if you are in the Hudson Valley, we highly recommend Colonial! read more

Always cordial and congenial she and Buddy have worked as a team to diagnose any problem I've had with my Outback. They have patiently explained the problem and outlined the cost giving me time to weigh the pros and cons of the repair. It is their professionalism that has guided me over my 13 years dealing with Colonial and the maintenance of my Outback. if you think you are getting out of the service dept for less than 200 dollars, an oil change with an inspection cost 300--they get you for things like the cabin filter, power steering fluid change, every "service" ive ever brought the car in for has always been 200 dollars or more---the mechanics work on commission so they try to sell you all sorts of things you really dont need...this place is an overrated Jiffylube, avoid it at all costs! read more
