I looked through a TON of reviews for this place and there is one *GLARING* difference between those reviews and mine. They seem to have visited during the day. It's quite possible if I'd have visited during the day that my review would've been 5 stars. However, we came at night (well... winter night it was like 6pm?). It was dark. First, the parking lot. It looked like a scene from a horror movie where everyone gets killed. There was no actual parking lot, just some grass along the road where people were parked. There was a chainlink fence gate that was barely open, with an overgrown sign, and it looked like you were walking into a haunted factory. We walked in the brewery and it was only light by faint lights and candles. We jokingly started calling it the MURDER BREWERY in a spooky voice. I see the beautiful plants in the pictures in reviews here and we saw none of that. I have less-than-stellar night vision and actually held onto my wife's shoulders for her to lead me around. They also have a lot of tables without chairs. Maybe that's trendy, but really I want to sit and chat while I try your beer. I don't want to have to stand around. It cleared out before we left and we got a seat eventually, but the table/chair ratio was way out of whack. All this time and I haven't spoken about the beer yet. It was pretty good. My BIL loved the Mummy Cat. We all had some pretty decent beers. However, we bolted after not too long due to it just not being a great place to hang out in the dark. Our friends enjoyed the photos we took and the catchphrase ANTIQUITY DAWNS AT MODERNITY'S TWILIGHT likely stolen from a 14 year old emo kid's journal that was on their less than useful website. Really wonderful brewery off the beaten track. A brewer who is also an artist. The atmosphere is as good as the beer. Right by the river and a really pleasant place to spend an evening. What a moody, mysterious brewery! When I arrived, there was no sign signaling that I was at the right location. I walked inside the spacious industrial building and it was dark; the only light came from candles and globe lights. The plants here were incredible - lush ferns and plants with GIANT foliage. The bartender was quite generous and let me try several of their brews. They have some unique beers here - an IPA on nitro, smoky beers - but the hazy IPA was my favorite. I enjoyed the live music on a Friday night - very festive! All in all, one of the most unique breweries I've ever visited. The vibe here definitely sets Cursus Keme apart from the many other Asheville breweries. read more

This was my favorite brewery in Asheville! The beer was very good and they had some gluten free options like seltzers and a seltzer slushi (pretty good but pricey). Everyone was very nice who worked there and the taproom itself was super cool. Tons of plants, interesting decor, and just overall a really unique spot to hang out. It was nice to have a brewery outside of downtown to hang out in. My husband is a bit of a beer connoisseur and really enjoyed their brews. It is on the pricier side but it's small batch, and (from what we could tell) they do not distribute so you can only get the beer there. That may be incorrect but we went all over the city and never came across one of their beers. We will definitely go back on our next trip to Asheville! read more

I have been wanting to give this spot a try so I was excited to see that Cursus Keme was open again when we were in Asheville on this most recent trip. When we arrived it was tough to tell if they were open since the fence was slightly ajar. The space was really pretty with all of the plants but the beer was just okay so I went with a lager. This is a really cool brewery located in an old warehouse but done very tastefully with lots of wood. Plenty of outdoor seating at picnic tables and a lawn where you can bring your own chairs to sit. We listened to a great band while we were there and I had one of the best brews I've had in a long time: a super rich nitrogenated stout. Hidden away by a green gate of vines or foliage the brewery makes you work a little to find its charm. The space is absolutely beautiful inside and outside giving a unique style of its own in the weird wonderful town of Asheville. Staff is exceptionally good at describing their beers. If you want to get away from downtown come enjoy the wares here. Also New Origin Brewery is in walking distance. Parking is available but it was quite muddy after all the rain days before. We were excited to try this brewery on our trip to Asheville this weekend, but our experience was quite underwhelming. We arrived right around 3pm when they opened on Thursday and were delighted when we walked in. The atmosphere is special and almost makes you feel like you are in a bit of a greenhouse. However, as nice as the location was, the beer did not live up to the hype. Perhaps we were simply victims of on tap circumstances, but none of the three we tried (Velodust, Washashore, Dunkel Dinkel) were memorable or even pleasant. On a non-beer related note, it was unfortunate that the bartender was not following the current health guidelines in Asheville as it makes me wonder what other health related issues might be ignored (though to be fair, they had a 100 sanitation score posted behind the bar). read more

I feel like I might need to update my review after checking this place out a second time, but here are my initial thoughts... It's a charming kinda place! ESPECIALLY at night, when they turned the lights off and everything was candle-lit....it just felt like a magical, greeny, woody, forestry, retreat. The beer- my husband found it....okay. He ordered two, and didn't "need to finish" his second one, because he found it underwhelming. I am not a beer drinker, however- so I ordered a wine spritzer (which was kinda the only other option). It was so watered down that I really couldn't taste much of the wine, TBH. When we moved on to round 2 of drinks (he ordered the lackluster beer), I was hoping to order a soda or kombucha or something so I didn't have to get another sad spritzer.....but no luck. I stuck with water. I DO want to return once more, and give it another go. Maybe check out the food truck. The customer service was good and the vibes are definitely unique. But it's not making my Top 5 Breweries List. read more

Went in to spend an evening with local friends and fell in love! We were tempted to sit out in the Biergarten, but couldn't resist sitting in the old workshop that is made super cozy by its lush plants & impressive wood furnishings. Our bartender, Cannon, was very knowledgeable and immediately made us feel welcome. I ordered the hard seltzer, which was so light & refreshing after walking around in the humidity all day. My husband got the Pilsner and said it was fantastic! When we were ready for a snack the yummy giant pretzel hit the spot. Three stars for beer, four to five for a very cool taproom and what will be a fantastic patio when the weather warms up. After all the positive reviews, maybe our beerspectations were a little too high. We felt let down. The porter on nitro had a fantastic waterfall effect and creamy mouthfeel, but it was also more bitter and drier than I typically associate with the style. Hubby's imperial stout was not to either of our tastes - it had that odd, tart tang from Brett and seemed thin and - again - a bit bitter. A dark beer lover, I'm well acquainted with both styles, and neither rendition here seemed balanced or typical. So, surprisingly, the beers were not our favorite despite all the Yelp-olades. Many others were sold out at the time. The space, a huge converted warehouse, is quite impressive and full of reclaimed wood, spare engines, and other interesting finds from around the property. I appreciated that the space was well heated and insulated despite being quite cavernous. Lighting is also kind of a "thing" for me, and I loved that none of it was a) harsh or b) overhead. Very mellow. The brewery was quite busy but had a laid-back vibe. Our bartender, who evidently was involved in launching the brewery, was fairly gregarious. The "no tabs" point of sale system was a bit awkward, but no biggie. If they want to pay extra processing fees, that's their prerogative. Overall, a decent experience, and I wish this new business success. Judging by the crowd, our lukewarm responses to the beer are minority opinions. read more

Brouwerïj Cursus Kĕmē recently opened in Asheville just off of Swannanoa River Road. It's tucked away at the end of 155 Thompson St in an old building that used to be a truck repair shop. When you get to the end of the road, it may appear that nothing is there but go through the vine covered gate and you will find this lovely old building. Inside there is amazing woodwork from the bar to the amazing wood tables. The mix of the old industrial equipment with gorgeous wood everywhere is stunning. They are also tables outside if you'd like to enjoy the weather. Jeffrey kindly walked us through the beer menu with kindness, passion for his craft, tasting notes, and various details. If you are a beer nerd or brewer, you will not only love the beer but the owners and their team. I enjoyed a sampling and a two full pours of all the beers on the menu. We loved everything that we tried. For me the highlights were Entheogen IPA (9.3% ABV) and Abrut IPA (Brut IPA 6.7% ABV). I can't wait to get back to Asheville and introduce Brouwerïj Cursus Kĕmē to my friends and family. Thank you for the amazing beers and making us feel warm and welcome. read more

I've tried this brewery a few times now because it's so pretty but the beer is not very good. They do have a decent wine slushy. There is one bartender that is very rude but the Malle bartender is nice. I don't hate this place but there are better options over there with better beer. read more

We were recommended to try this place by a manager at Bhramari Brewery. We took an Uber there that evening. Pulling up it was a little sketchy since it's just a chain fence that you come up to. But after walking through the fence you are immediately greeted with their ambiance. Plants and lights everywhere. The inside of the brewery was unlike any brewery we have ever been to! Lots of lamps all around to create a very moody vibe. Tons of plants all around too. No overhead lights on. I absolutely loved the vibe!! The beer was decent, but not our top choice. The existence of Cursus Kĕmē may not be a secret... but when you take the time to visit this brewery in the corner of the Oakley warehouse district, you may feel like you've discovered something that has been hidden with purpose. I stumbled upon Cursus Kĕmē (pronounced Curs-us Kem-Me like the end of the word Alchemy) through a random search of new breweries in Asheville. I couldn't believe the results. A five star brewery, mere minutes from my house, that I had never visited, let alone heard friends talk about? Could this be? The hours of operation for this spot may have been the main culprit... Only open three days a week, from 11-8 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I made a note to check it out at some point when its schedule would fall in line with both my wife and my own availability. Low and behold the stars aligned this weekend, and we ventured forth along the Swananoa River, past Brother Wolf and The Regeneration station to what seemed like dead end surrounded by industrial warehouses. Cars were lined up in a freshly mulched parking area, and to our own luck a couple was exiting their vehicle as we arrived. We caught up to them quickly and asked if they were heading to the brewery whose name we could not pronounce. They said they were, and that it was their first time making the journey as well. Taking a cursory glance, you may think that the gate at the end of the road is closed, but upon further investigation you will find that the gate is actually open, just enough for you to walk in, past the small sign bearing the name Cursus Kĕmē. Walking up the drive you will notice repurposed industrial debris, such as old wheels turned into planters, that line the ample outdoor courtyard. Walking into the space is an epiphany. This tremendous warehouse with its high ceilings has been transformed into a one of a kind brew house. Giant wooden tables crafted from trees found on the property, metal rafters adorned with alchemical script, massive foeders, and detailed engine blocks supporting the expansive wooden bar. The laquer in this place hasn't dried yet. That which was old, or found, has been transformed into something new and intriguing. The staff here is welcoming and pleasant. Although the brewery's presence seems almost cryptic, the staff is happy to receive you, rather than carrying any of attitude or snobbery. The beer list is large, and has many interesting brews that are less than common. However, many of the offerings were already sold out, leaving only 4 beers for us to choose from. We selected the nitro ale, and the imperial stout. My wife and I were served by Jeff, who turned out to be the owner. Jeff was more than happy to tell us about the brewery, the two and a half years he put into it before opening his doors last summer, and the meaning of the brewery's name. Cursus is latin for courses, and Kĕmē is a reference to alchemy, the sort of magic that fuels the brewing process. (Jeff, if you're reading this and I totally butchered that I'm sorry, your beers are strong and delicious and remembering the exact exchange we had is a bit challenging) If you hope to discover this hideaway for yourself, it is better to come earlier than later. Each week they roll out new brewed offerings, and when they're gone they're gone. You could come on a Sunday afternoon like we did, but you'll have more flavors to dive into if you were to arrive on a Friday. Cursus Keme is focused on making incredible beer and letting that beer speak for itself. There are no lawn games, or food trucks. At this point they're doing no outside advertisement. Am I doing them a disservice by writing a review about my visit on Yelp? I really don't know... I hope not. I simply hope that sharing my experience and wonder brings more people to discover this place, and that it becomes a shrine to beer worthy of pilgrimage in a town that is already known for its beer. read more

This is one of the most hidden breweries in Asheville. They have a large space at the end of the road near Biltmore Village along the river. They have put a lot of work into the space and it really shows. They don't currently allow dogs (sorry Fido, you've got to sit this one out) but I think it's eventually in the works. They have a pretty small staff but they had 5 fantastic beers on draft when we were there. I really enjoyed tasting them all and hanging out at their custom made tables. I felt like a giant sitting at them! The staff was fantastic. There was only one guy working when we were there (it was a slow time of day I think, there were less than 20 of us at the brewery on a rainy day) but he answered all of our questions and was very nice. I can totally see ourselves coming back again and again especially when the weather is nicer to hang out outside at one of the many picnic tables! read more
