It was great actually until one change. I have used this vet clinic for over 20 years. However I will be switching. I was willing to drive the hour and a half to see Dr. Pilkington without hesitation. However, I was contacted by Custer McDermott Animal Hospital to inform me that they would no longer approve Chewy prescriptions, and I would have to drive an hour and a half to pick up a paper prescription and mail that into Chewy if I wanted to use Chewy. The vet clinic charges a lot more than Chewy so no I won't be giving Chewy up, I won't be driving an hour and a half for a slip of paper as the clinic email stated. The clinic has no power over where and how I spend my money. I will be giving up Custer McDermott Animal Hospital and sadly Dr. Pilkington. To be clear, David Pilkington is the one and only reason we have been loyal to this clinic for all these years. If not for David, we would have changed clinics years ago. Now, they have given us reason to change simply out of greed. Vet care is as expensive , meds are expensive. When the clinic makes a petty policy that costs you more money, you shop around. read more

Amazing vet . They do detail exams on dogs and have amazing follow up. I went on a roadtrip with my puppy . He got a little dehydrated at the dog park, as he threw up once after playing for hours . I took him to the emergency clinic where he was given fluids . Nothing too serious. The emergency clinic sent their note to Custer, I got a follow up call the next day from them . Glad I am taking my dog here as the last vet had no follow up and did next to no physical examination on my dogs . read more

I took my beloved cat of 15 years to Custer McDermott Animal Hospital. I found out he was dying of kidney disease and needed multiple weekly I V Injections. His first injection came to $160 plus the $84 for the appt, plus $500 for a blood test to diagnose him. I canceled his 2nd appt the next day strictly for financial reasons. I couldn't go into financial ruin spending $500-$750 a week to get him the care he needed from Custer McDermott. I made it clear money was an issue in the first appointment. I thought this was only treatment plan. I've never dealt with a cat dying of kidney disease. I don't know what is possible. I don't know the different types of treatment plans. I don't know the right questions to ask. I was a mess after I learned about his condition. After 2 days of hell trying to care for him the best I could, at the same time saying goodbye to such a sweet, loyal friend. I did some research and found out that cats with kidney disease could be given I V injections at home by their owners and also found out the cost of the fluid he needed was only $1 per injection. If I had a written prescription and ordered it from Chewy.com. Custer McDermott marked up the cost of my cat's medication (Normosol-R Electrolyte injection solution) 8000%. The cost of 1000ML bag of Normosol was $9.99 from Chewy. He needed 100ML per injection. It was ONE DOLLAR! Once I got my bearings and found all this out it was too late. I've been going to Custer McDermott now for about 10 years. I came to them after talking to a Plano K9 officer about finding a new vet. My previous vet missed something critical on a GSD that cause the dog pain and the dog was reactive to touch and he labeled the dog as having a temperament issue and suggested that I put the dog down. Nope. Enter Dr Pilkington. After the issue was solved with the pain from another Houston area vet, I started bringing my dog to Dr Pilkington. Drs Brewer and Cinclair would also sometimes work with Dominic. Dominic only lived to 8. He was a high energy working GSD that had lots of drive. At about 5 we found him unresponsive in his crate after we woke up. We rushed him to the clinic and Dr Pilkington made room for him in his schedule. It took a bit to stabilize, but his blood-sugar was dangerously low. Almost fatal low. Eventually, he was stabilized and found to have Addison's disease. The team was able to extend his life for another 3 years with Dominic being in good shape on his medicine. Eventually, his condition got the better of him and he passed. His last month or two, Dr Pilkington did his best to see if an adjustment to his meds was all that was necessary. He also helped us ease his transition. I won't be bringing my animals to any other vet. This team is phenomenal. I've read some feedback about price. I don't really agree. I find the team in line with high quality care. You get what you pay for. I don't find them unreasonable at all. They are phenomenal with large breed dogs. read more

Dr. Cinclair and Madison, his technician, completed my cat Kaitlyn's annual exam. Dr.Cinclair is kind and communicative and his questions provide the opportunity to update information. Madison is friendly and is naturally gentle with your pet. Dr.Cinclair completed a thorough exam and vaccinations and explained each aspect. Have had several visits with both doctors involving 2 of our laboradores. They have been nothing but wonderful and always started with the simplest and least expensive treatment instead of what we experienced at other veterinarians where they want to do drastic tests blood work and surgery. Yes some cases call for that but we were amazed with one of our dogs the response. Most recently we had to put our 15 year old dog down. Dr. Lagrone is THE BEST. She was highly recommended by all the people at the DFW Reptarium and I followed her here from Banfield. She brought my very rare Black Tree Monitor back from some severe parasite problems, has seen my Jackson's chameleon for years, and now all three of my dogs had bloodwork, dental cleaning, surgical teeth removal and surgical removal of a tumor. I feel like the prices are very fair for service. I know there's cheaper vets out there offering teeth cleaning most likely done by vet students, but I wanted the very best for my elderly dogs. I've known of 4 people who have lost dogs during dental cleaning, and I know it's always a risk, but when Dr. Lagrone has my pets I KNOW that someone is monitoring them as much as possible and they're getting the very best care. If she can handle my blood-drawing monitor lizard for anesthesia and a tiny lizard enema, there's nothing she can't do! Also - you can feel that she genuinely really loves animals and has a true passion for them. Finally, everyone in the office is great. We took our dogs to Dr. Pilkington and he couldn't have been more thorough in his exam of them. We recently moved from out of state and finding a vet you can trust is not easy. I absolutely LOVE this place. The veterinarians are all wonder and very well educated. Unfortunately, I'm giving two stars because of the receptionist. I emailed about pricing for various shots for my cats upcoming appointment but was only given the exam price. Because of this I called to see how much the various shots would cost only to have the receptionist tell me I didn't get pricing via email on the three other vaccinations because they "don't have time for that". She repeatedly cut me off while asking questions and then blamed it on my cell service...???? I really enjoyed coming to this clinic because it's always clean and the staff is usually very kind to my whole family. I had a bad experience with this office ,if not to say horrific.They should have told me my cat won't make it and help him to sleep.Instead they prescribed a bunch of painkillers that he thrown up anyways and sold me food that he wasn't able to eat .I know it isn't their fault that he got so sick but it was their responsibility to recognize him dying and not to prolong his torture.Very much disappointment and dissatisfied with their service read more

I have an English Bulldog (Chewbacca). Normally a vet see's this breed and they see nothing but $$$$$$$ walking in the door. The doctors realistically treat my dog. I know I own a breed that needs more veterinary attention than others, but they make it a point to not gouge me and are very reasonable considering the higher level of care and professionalism I receive at this facility. I have moved downtown and make the almost hour commute and schedule a PTO day in order for my dog to be seen at this facility because I trust them implicitly. They have gone above and beyond to accommodate me due to my trip distance and time in my opinion. If you take a look at my review history, I don't just hand out the 5 star reviews, and I am highly critical. I would very highly recommend the team at this animal hospital. read more

If I could give this place NO STARS I would. I have never experienced worse service than I did taking my dog Apollo to this vet. I have been to many different vet hospitals before and always had good customer service and patient care for my dogs but Custer McDermott is not on that list. I was recommended this vet hospital by Center for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care, by the Dr who was the neuro specialist for my other dog, also a Rottweiler who suffered from seizures. And since his passing of a month ago, we asked for her recommendation since we moved to the Plano area. I am disappointed that her recommendation didn't live up to the standards I believe every animal hospital should have. Considering that COVID-19 has caused restrictions on going into the vet with your dog, I understand that it's for safety of the staff and others. That being said I expect that if I am a new patient and my dog has never been to your hospital before, never met your staff, nor am I able to go in with my dog, you'd treat us better and with more empathy. My dog being a Rottweiler was treated as if he was aggressive and was going to attack anyone on site. I was called in when my dog was anxious and wasn't too keen on the staff coming to check on him. They then asked me to go inside and comfort him but on the condition I put a muzzle on him, even though my dog had exhibited no aggressive behavior besides some growling because he was afraid. The vet then brought in the most unfriendly and menacing looking vet-tech who didn't greet my dog, wasn't sweet to him or even trying to be nice. He was acting as if my dog, who was already muzzled, was going to attack him. In all of this time of the consult we were in the lobby because the staff thought that my dog, already anxious and upset about wearing a muzzle, would feel better with other dogs and people walking by to distract him. Because of another dog walking by, my dog got excited and wanted to sniff the other dog, the vet tech then yanked him back by his collar and kept choking him and as my dog was trying to get away from the tech, he started spinning around the tech while the tech was CHOKING my dog by his collar. I had to intervene and tell the tech "I've got him!" because the tech was just so unprofessional and way too aggressive. Along with this the vet was condescending and spoke to me as if I had no knowledge on how to take care of my dog and was talking to me as if I was incompetent. I was so upset by this experience and my dog is traumatized. NEVER has he had to be muzzled, NEVER has my dog been yanked and chocked by staff, NEVER have I been talked to or treated in this way. I will NEVER go back to Custer McDermott Animal Hospital ever again. Nor do I recommend anyone to go to this place. read more

I have taken my cat to Custer McDermott since he was 10 months old. On August 14th my cat started having severe cluster seisures, and I called my vet clinic I've trusted with the care of my cat for 12 yrs for an emergency visit, but they wouldn't see me, they didn't have any time. They offered me an appt at 8:30 am, which I took out of desperation. My cat started getting worse, and I called my vet again and begged them to see my cat, and they again said no we don't have any openings. I had to call another vet clinic that happily took me right away. My cat was having cluster seisures which he has had, since I adopted him at 10 months old and Custer knew about. I can't believe a vet clinic that I've known for 12 yrs, would turn my cat away when I needed them most during the worst day of my life. If you have an emergency, don't bother taking your pet here, because they won't see you. I am so disappointed in Custer McDermott Animal Hospital I would give them a minus 10. I would never bring another pet here again. I'm sure they don't care because they make tons of money, but this was my buddy, my love, who is now over the Rainbow Bridge ! read more

We first met Dr. LaGrone at Banfield at Parker and 75 and appreciated her expertise so much that we followed her to Custer McDermott Animal Hospital despite the distance. We've always known Dr. LaGrone to be extremely knowledgeable and skillful when it comes to assessing and diagnosing our pets. Better still for our animals, she is also compassionate, personable, affectionate, and very loving towards them. For them, the vet can be scary and stressful, but the demeanor that she and her staff show when they arrive just really calms them down, especially with our cat, Tabbie. (She can go bonkers.) All this to say that if you're looking for a vet who really, truly cares about your pets and lives this approach every day, Dr. LaGrone is your best bet. read more

Even though everything is open during this Covid-19 chaos, this vet still won't allow pet owners inside their facility to talk face to face with the vets. As we're new to the area and we don't have a history with this office it was important for us to talk about our concerns. We took our Yorkie in for a 2 cyst type removals and for a skin allergy. Although the cysts were removed, and she received her shots, the continued skin problems have not been addressed. We asked twice for the vet to call us to discuss treatment. $1300 later and still no phone call. We will not be returning. *In response-The fact that the office manager wants ME to call them, when it's their lack of care I'm speaking of, tells me all I need to know. Visiting this place costed us a lot. I took my cat for a health visit by Dr. Cinclair in 18th of December 2019. Then, we were scheduled to visit the doctor again for another full assessment on The first week of January when a Leukemia vaccine was planned to be administered to my cat. However, doctor Cinclair said he does not want to give the vaccine himself and asked his assisstant to take my cat to a back room to administer the vaccine. When I requested a copy of vaccine documentation, I realized they had used a vaccine that is just One Day left to its expiration date. During my visits, I did not see any hand-washing or surface-cleaning between animal cares and visits. Ashley, the vet technician, had very long artificial nails on that would concern me a lot questioning how she would be able to clean and wash out all the germs collected by those long nails between sick animals cares. Long story short, my 5 month-old indoor only British short hair kitten was seen in this cliniic twice and 5 days after being seen by doctor Cinclair and defined as completely healthy and being given her Leukemia shot, she got itching in the back of her lower right leg which turned to a red hairless patch a day after; and guess what? It was a ringworm transferred from contaminated surfaces in the clinic. We stopped going to this clinic and never got a second lesion anywhere else in her body. However, today, after more than 2 weeks of treatment, the ringworm in her right foot (acquired from Custer McDermott animal hospital) has not resolved yet and we are under continuous treatment and evaluation by another vet clinic who care more about sanitation, hand washing and cleaning when dealing with contagious infections. No need to mention the physical, time-related and financial inconveniences that this problem has caused our pet and family. Even though I followed other reviews to start using this clinic, I WOULD NOT recomment this place to any friend. read more

My pet had swallowed a pair of socks and had it in his stomach as per the x-rays we had taken at another Vet before coming to CMAH. The Vet I was seeing was aware the sock was in the stomach and was eager and convincing us to do a surgery asap. I told them my pet was eating, drinking and behaving fine. Is there another option before we head straight to surgery. I came to CMAH for a second opinion. The first question the doctor here asked me was if they induced a vomit to get the socks out? They scheduled my appointment immediately and brought my doodle in for x-ray and induced the vomit and got the socks out. All of this in 30 minutes After a whole week of agony my family was in, this was such a relief. I sincerely thank Dr. Sinclair for agreeing to bring my pet in asap and Dr. Brewer who (treated my pet) for her honesty and for her best approach to treat my doodle. They saved my pet from the pain of surgery and my family from spending a thousand or more when it could be avoided. This clinic has been nothing short of a godsend. They were the first clinic that listened to our concerns about a growing mass on our dog; Dr. Sinclair wasted no time and aspirated the mass to confirm our fears and create a treatment plan. Our old clinic never recommended or offered testing, dismissing it for almost two years as a "benign fatty tumor", based on crude palpation. Dr. Sinclair connected us to a phenomenal oncologist based on the complexity of the tumor and saved us hundreds by performing the required chest x-rays and bloodwork at CMAH. We have our sweet girl with us today because of his intervention and we continue to monitor this rare cancer with the support of CMAH. They've also made special accommodations for my large, leash-reactive dog. They don't treat him like a pariah and help make his visit as smooth as possible. We go here because of these reasons and numerous recommendations from trusted friends. The veterinarians are top notch, the clinic is immaculate, and the reception staff has always been so helpful getting us an appointment despite their high demand. Parker, whom I adore more than I probably should, isn't extremely bright. Dr. Pilkington is our Go-To guy for all of Parker's missteps. We travel 40 minutes each way to go here. They're awesome. Some things we've had to hit up Dr. Dave for: Parker ate a Hershey bar. I'm the idiot who left it there. Parker ate the plastic timer that comes in Chicken and pops up when finished. We had to sift through poo for days. Parker came home one day missing a claw. Not cracked, or torn, but straight up GONE. Parker cracked his claw so bad I almost barfed. Parker has a weird mole on his side. I can't do anything about that I guess. Parker has a lump. We're keeping an eye on that one. NEW ONE since 1/27: Parker busted his tail. We had to bring him to Emergency Services where they wanted $350 to come in, sedate and x-ray him. We settled on a shot of morphine and brought him up to Custer the following morning. They made him better. Now he flails the tail around just to show us how much we'll spend on his ass. They were also great when my husband decided to bring home 2 puppies he found. He does that. Anyway, great doctors, really nice staff and good prices. They're worth the trip! read more

Sadly, last summer, I had to take my cat in to get checked out and we ended up having to put him to sleep. He was in kidney failure and it was past the point of hope. This is the cat I'd had since 1991. Best cat. Ever. The whole staff was so nice and understanding. The vet let me spend as much time as I needed saying goodbye to my kitty, helped me make my decision, and was overall very kind. We opted for a private cremation, and I was to pick up the engraved cedar box (I'm a little pathetic, I know) in a few days. ***Before I went back, they had already sent white calla lilies to my apartment with a sympathy card. They are professional, intelligent, thorough, and they always look out for our sweet senior dog who has some crazy genetic health issues. Our normal vet was not available when our dog poisoned herself with xylitol (an artificial sweetener that is highly toxic to dogs) and Dr. Brewer saw us immediately, which is crucial in these situations. Karma's blood sugar was 24 and she was in crisis. They stabilized her and kept me constantly updated. When poison control recommended a compound that we could not find in any pharmacy within 20 miles, Dr. Brewer checked on the possibility of using an Over the Counter nutritional supplement instead. She stayed until I was able to track some down and let me go back to check on Karma to reassure myself she was doing better. I'm glad they were available when we needed them. read more

2/2/2016: I read the review before I took my dog to visit but I ended up with disappointments. We've been asked to wait in a tiny closed room most of the time during the visit. My dog was very anxious but nobody seems care or wanted to help. They took her for treatment at the back of the office and refused me to watch. (In that sense, if they put her in closet for 10 mins and doing nothing, you won't be able to know!!!). It turned out to be a stomach upset but I still had to spent $300 on 5 different kinds of pills. Seriously? how do you want me to feed her 5 pills a day? I tried to blend in her food but she puked more. What a waste of money! I'll never go this place again! 2/11 Update: Their manager contacted me after I left previous review and apologized for the miscommunication. We scheduled another visit to redo the physical test and credit me back. This time we had another doctor. He's very patient and nice. I got all the information I need. Tips and tricks. (I was about to add one more meal for my dog but thank god doctor stopped me telling me she is in great shape!) It was a nice visit. I cannot say enough about the professionalism of this Veterinary Clinic! I called them early on a Monday morning because one of my dogs got in an altercation and needed immediate attention and stitches. I called and they said they were booked for the day, then I explained what was going on and the receptionist said "Please come in, we will make it happen". I arrived within 30 minutes and was seen by the Veterinarian immediately! They addressed the concerns and gave me an assessment of the care with pricing and took great care of my dog. I picked him back up at 4pm that day and he was doing much better! Just a Note: I called my regular vet and they simply said "we are too busy and cant see you for 3 days". Hands down the most incompetent squad of vets I've ever seen. I don't know if they were just having a bad day, or everybody they brought in to see my dog (4yo Border Collie mix) was brand new, or what, but it was an extremely terrible experience. My dog is not aggressive, but he is very defensive, and he will nip and snap at people if he feels threatened. He has never EVER bitten anybody, and still hasn't, with his whole mouth, locked-on, all that jazz. He's nipped at other dogs, but never at people. To the day I brought him here, he'd never even made oral contact with any person, but I told them, hey, he's a bit touchy. He was going in for shots, really routine. When the first vet/tech whoever came in, I told them if you want to muzzle him, that's fine, but I should do it. She was trying to get it on him and he wouldn't be still. I offered, but she said no, I'll just call another tech in to help. Long story short, three people and me and my dog are all in this crowded, tiny room and this is where I just really lost all understanding of the level of incompetence they were showing. Absolutely no understanding of dog psychology. Two vets are blocking the door. So far they've been unsuccessful at getting the muzzle on. I've offered multiple times to do it myself, easy-peasy. Their solution is to have this big, tall vet tech stand directly over my dog, straddling him as he cowers, seated, between his legs, unable to back up or move forward, while the tech attempts to lower the muzzle down onto his face. My dog is extremely distressed at this point, and as the muzzle comes down, he tries to get away, and in the process, he is grabbed by the original vet, who he prompty NIPS. I say that with confidence he NIPPED at her, because I saw the LITTLE bitty wound on the EDGE of her hand where he snapped and let go, immediately. He went to cower behind me. At this point, I'm not remotely surprised at what's occurred. What I am surprised by is that now the head vet is explaining that per city law, my dog now has to be quarantined because he bit someone. He has to be quarantined at my home and observed for 14 days or something while they run blood tests and make sure nothing was transmitted, all this pending an inquiry by Animal Control. They end the session and we have to go home. I am in shock, because now I'm thinking animal control could come and take my dog away because he bit a vet tech. They said they'd be in touch to clear him if there was no negative blood tests. This has taken a really dramatic turn. I get home and I think this sounds incredibly stupid. Dogs nipping or even biting at people in the course of vet visit is certainly an extenuating circumstance to the "bite" law. I understand if my dog bit someone while we were out walking or something, but I brought him to a doctor's office for care, and of course that's gonna put some dogs on edge. Can they be held liable for that behavior during a vet visit? Under Texas law, no. In short, under Texas law a vet assumes temporary "ownership," in a sense, over the dog in care. Dogs cannot be taken away by animal control simply for biting their owners. An owner, of course, can surrender any dog to animal control that they want. But animal control isn't just going to take the dog unless someone else (not the owner) makes a report about a bite. Ergo, a vet (temporary owner) cannot make a claim about a dog biting them to animal control. They took the risk. Isn't this utterly common sensical. You're a V E T. You thought you were going to make your whole career without a dog NIPPING at you? When you did such a GOOD JOB handling a clearly terrified dog, standing OVER him in the most aggressive stance you could and trying to muzzle him from that position? Are you INSANE? I think they must have realized this in hindsight, because they never called me back. The head vet probably let her sup know, and I hope he said "um, no, that's part of the job?" And I hope she felt stupid as hell because the mental anguish it caused me thinking I was going to lose custody of my dog or something because he did what any normal dog would do was terrifying and unnecessary. I will NEVER go to this vet again, and I would NEVER recommend it to anyone. If I could give 0 stars, I would. It was painful just to click the 1-star option. read more

I can't say enough good things about this animal hospital. They treated my dog his entire life for nearly 16 years, from his first puppy visit to the final, saddest visit. They became like family to me. Everyone here is wonderful, our main vet was Dr Cinclair and we saw Dr Pilkington as well. These two men are so knowledgeable and friendly, they really care about the animals and the people too. We haven't gotten another dog since our first one passed, but when we do we'll definitely look forward to going back to this vet. They are true gems in their field. read more

I couldn't be more pleased with the professional, yet warm care that was used while Dr Cinclair was seeing our family pet. (Ollie the Aussie) As well as very nice facilities, friendly support staff, a nice touch included a convenient pay by debit card option, and schedule the follow up visit right inside the exam room, so I was able to skip stopping at the front desk on the way out.
