Custom Stonescaping submitted one of three estimates for a French drain to deal with runoff from a neighbor's property during rainstorms. Though their estimate was far from the lowest, their proposed design was clearly both the simplest and most comprehensive to deal with the problem. The work was done efficiently with few immediate problems; however, in spite of repeated assurances about the viability of transplanted vegetation, we will have to replace quite a bit of shrubbery and most likely a plum tree close to the excavation site. So though the project entailed these "hidden costs," overall we were happy with Custom Stonescaping. One caveat: After the completion of the project, we asked for estimates for some minor masonry and a modification of the drainage system. Custom Stonescaping's estimate for the masonry was double the next highest and more than triple the other estimate we got for the drainage modification in spite of (or maybe because of) our status as a "repeat customer." read more

I hired Custom Stonescaping to do a re-design of my front walkway. We were looking for a creative, attractive design that would make the walkway accessible while not looking like a ramp. We live in Reston and have HOA restrictions/requirements as well. Rod was our designer and created a path that ramped gently up to the front entrance. They created a lovely inclusion of the existing porch. The walk up impression is 1000% improved. They recommended landscaping that deer wouldn't find enticing and worked well in our setting. The price was competitive, they stayed on plan, on time and in budget. Ron was here every day to check progress and give direction. They workers were well informed about what we wanted, were polite, and cleaned up every single day. As an example, the last bit of work created a dust cloud and they washed our glass doors, the front windows and the bushes/plants. I use a cane and have walked the path in the rain, with leaves and it is not slippery at all. Not only do I recommend Custom Stonescaping but I would happily hire them again. read more

We were very happy with the work of Custom Stonescaping. We had them power wash and reset the stonework around our pool. Upon commencement of work they found that the drainage system in the pool deck wasn't functioning and found the cause of the problem and replaced the faulty pipe. Not Reliable!!!! This Company was working at the neighbor's behind us. They knocked on our door asking if they could go into our back yard to pick up branches that had fallen. This is NOT what happened! Next I knew they were Dropping very large parts of the tree into our yard causing damage to the grass. But worse is when the pull one end of my grandchildren's swing set out of the ground and move/twisted it. They semi put it back but it is now not properly secured anymore and parts have been compromised. I did speak to a John B and he said he would come by and correct issues. We have yet to see or hear back from him or anyone else at the company. And to top it all off they still did not clean all of the mess in our yard. VERY DESRESPECTFUL!!!!!!! read more

Flaky and shady company. Received a free estimate on 10/13/20 but did not hear from them even after a week. Was ready to write them off thinking that they did not want the business but finally received an estimate on 10/26/20. Had questions about the estimate because I needed details. Was told on the email with the estimate to call Jeff Reynolds (the person who did our estimate and who happens to be the owner) directly if I had a question, which I did. No response after a couple of days. Called the company and was told to send them an email which they will forward to Jeff. No response for a couple of days again. Called the company again this morning and said that I still have not heard back from Jeff by phone nor by email. At that point, I asked if I could have a different person I could speak to and eventually deal with if we proceed with the project since we've had no responses from Jeff. Was told that I will need to have another estimate if I want to switch to another designer. I said that didn't make sense (especially since the person who gave me the estimate was the owner so wouldn't they agree with him?) so the Admin person said she would ask Jeff. Many hours later, still no response. Finally gave up and sent them an email saying not to bother since we are no longer interested in doing business with the company. I mean, I tried to do business with them but for some reason, they were not interested even though they did send an estimate. Very strange. In addition, their website does not mention anything about a minimum. They will only tell you about their minimum ($7,000) when they schedule the estimate. And for most folks, it's really hard to know how much the cost will be. That's why you have the company come over to do an estimate! Lastly, when Jeff came over he did not wear a mask although he kept at a distance. And after he left, it dawned on me that he did not take measurements. I had just bought a vintage mid-century post-and-beam built into a hill, and after a few months realized that the hill I fell in love with was a drainage and erosion nightmare! To this end, Jeff and his team at Custom Stonescaping really delivered! After discussing needs and ideas both in-person and over the phone, as well as the constraints of my budget and aesthetic objectives, Jeff proposed addressing the replacement of a long-failed double timber retaining wall with a new one made of stacked stone. We additionally addressed severe erosion and drainage issues at the property through addition of two swales, underground piping and other considerations. The finished product looks great! Installation was remarkably fast - only four days, if I recall correctly. I appreciated the detail Jeff and his team put into the project -- like the boulders that became features on the wall, or the fact that my existing plantings and landscape wiring was largely undisturbed. Jeff's teams were professional and took care to clean up every day. Team members were respectful, wore uniforms and otherwise were good temporary neighbors. Excess fill from some of the projects was used to level the yard, which had been worn from erosion from previous neglect. The wall is SOLID - will probably outlast the house. My house is on a steep hill and has many landscaping projects ahead of it. I will definitely call Custom Stonescaping when it comes time to tackle the next ones! read more

Custom Stonescaping has done two projects for us in the past year. Overall, the work has been reasonable, although the attention to detail has been a concern. For example, as the two projects were connected to each other--first a patio, then a path leading from it--it was essential that the pavers match. When they started installing the pavers for the path, it appeared to me that the color differed from those installed for the patio and commented on it to the crew foreman. He assured me that the apparent difference was due to the patio pavers having been exposed to the weather for a while and the new ones would look the same after a few months. Well, that didn't happen. So now we have a patio of one color and a path leading from it of a different color. Not a life-altering situation, I know, but certainly one that will remain annoying for many years to come. When I brought this to the attention of the company's representative, he wrote back: "I ordered the same material so not sure...This is the first I heard of it. I dident notice when I was thier." Follow up customer service has been disappointing. Three years ago they did a great job putting in a stone patio in our back yard and it was based on a recommendation from our next door neighbor who got theirs done two months earlier. Since then we've had issues with the patio and they have given us the hands off response when we've contacted them. But when our neighbor calls with the same issues on their patio they've corrected them. This last time I was told we had a 3 year warranty and it was up and now if we want them to fix issues it will cost us $1000! When my neighbor was told had a warranty that was for 5 years! Custom Stonescaping installed a very nice stone patio for us about 4 years ago. Over time, the stone dust between the stones settled, and a few stones cracked and disintegrated, so a few months ago, we hired them to come top up the stone dust and replace the stones that had disintegrated. They did a very nice job, but we found that within a few weeks, the new stone dust really settled a lot. We requested them to come back and do another top up. Without any question, they did that, so now the patio is about as good as new! They were very responsive. We've been very happy with this company, and would recommend their work. read more

After four years of planning, we finally made the decision to go with Custom Stonescaping in February 2022. Custom was flexible enough to give us a handful of quotes over that timeframe as our project changed in size and design before we were able to make a final decision. We had two front flagstone pathways installed as well as a bi level back patio. Crews came on time and were very efficient and organized, and maintained a high attention to detail, which was a reflection of their great skills and experience working together on past projects. In addition to basic patio and walkway design, Jeff Reynolds (CEO and Founder) helped us to understand how to add additional drainage features to the project so that it would work well with our graded lot, tie into our existing gutter system and push the water as far away from the house as possible. Our projects involved all three exterior doorways, and it was fantastic that the crews were so accommodating with us coming and going during the project between working from home and sending kids to and from school. We only had one small adjustment during the project that needed to be made and Custom modified it to our liking immediately the next day. In addition to the overall care and project management from Jeff, two things positively unique to our experience with Custom compared to other companies we've worked with on other projects are that the crews cleaned up the work sites each day- including hosing down walkways and the driveway from mud and debris (not just at the end) and the multiple person crews worked hard each day without any idle time standing around between tasks aside from official breaks. We were tired of having the neighborhood dogs using our front yard as their toilet, so we called Custom Stonescaping and asked them to take away the grass, and make something pretty. they delivered! We now have the most beautiful stone patio that matches our house and community perfectly! We never knew how big our little townhouse yard was.
