We recently had dinner at Cutlass & Cane and unfortunately left very disappointed with both the service and management response. We ordered the Italian Osetra caviar service. As anyone familiar with caviar knows, tins are typically served open, with the label printed on the underside of the container. During dinner, I commented that the caviar tasted different from what we normally order, although my wife thought it seemed similar enough. At the end of the meal, we turned the tins over and discovered we had actually been served two entirely different types of caviar than what we ordered and paid for. When I brought this to the attention of the manager, his response was to joke that he should charge us extra for "giving us a variety." We did not find that humorous, professional, or acceptable. What concerns us most is not simply the caviar mistake, but the apparent willingness to substitute seafood products without informing the customer. In this case, the tins were labeled, making the substitution obvious once inspected. It raises the question of how other seafood substitutions may be handled when customers cannot easily verify what they are being served. Despite this experience, we still paid in full for our caviar service, salads, entrees, and bottles of wine. Lovely setting and a lovely room for this new-ish entrant in CA/STT. The three of us started with two apps -- tuna and scallops -- and were delighted with them. Snapper, oxtail, and octopus salad as entrees. Both entrees were delicious, well prepared and presented, and big -- lunch for the next day to be sure. Octopus salad was an entree size salad (or could be split by two as a starter); a little light on the octopus, but very tasty. Couple of order-related hiccups handled swiftly and professionally by the wonderful service team. Fully priced with a somewhat aggressive built-in tip policy. As is sometimes the case, even with high end restaurants, there may be missteps. Question for me is always one of "did they handle their mistakes well? Cutlass & Cane did, and we would absolutely be back. read more

The ambiance was gorgeous and the decor was very nice and upscale. The food came out hot and fresh and was really good. My sea bass was a 10/10. I subbed for rice and peas instead of the starch that came with the meal. The oxtails were tender but lacked spice and gave me a beef stew vibe. Overall I enjoyed. The view on the water was everything. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. When we walked in a server asked if we had reservations and they wasn't busy. I replied no. He said let me see what we can do.... In my mind I'm thinking it's only 4 tables with guest. But I reframed. My server was amazing and she made great recommendations. She was attentive but not overbearing. The front desk person checked in at our table to make sure everything was great. I am back. Brought my sister this time. My first visit was wonderful and this return started out great. Alex is a pleasant host. Our server, Se-An was delightful. She was excellent with menu suggestions from appetizers through dessert. She was engaging and attentive throughout the evening. We shared an order of Jerk Chicken Wings with ranch on the side. The wings are tastier tossed with the jerk sauce. She ordered the Seafood Pasta. It was delicious but there's lots of shells. I ordered the Oxtails which I enjoyed better the first time. The flavor was still on point but it was so tender that it there were more bones meat. Note: There is a charge for bottled water, I'm guessing, if no drinks are ordered. Nice. Not thrilling, but nice. Outdoor seating has great views of the harbor and the service was quick and attentive. The restaurant is nicely decorated and prices are what I'd expect for a touristy spot in ST. The sea bass, however, didn't blow my socks off. For $54 I'd expect not to have to pick half a dozen bones out of my mouth. The best part of the meal was the side of plantains I ordered as well. The bartender didn't even acknowledge us and when we tried to ask for the menu he rudely said 'hold on' with his finger. Bad service is unfortunately a common theme for Rock city but you're still hopeful when trying something new out here, We did not even get to try to order any food because they said the kitchen closes at 8pm. We saw a couple of people dine in and order food after 9pm and was served? I don't know what's going there but ok. It's truly disheartening to see these things and have these experiences from businesses on the island because it's not sustainable. Imagine walking into a restaurant by accident and walking out with one of the most unforgettable meals of your life. That's exactly what happened at Cutlass & Cane. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary in St. Thomas and looking for the perfect spot for dinner. She had one request: oxtail. We ended up here kind of by chance and turns out, we hit the jackpot. Right from the entrance, the energy is warm and welcoming. The staff is genuinely sweet, the waterfront setting is romantic, and you can still see hints of the building's past life as the old Gucci store (a nice little touch of island luxury). Our server let us know the oxtail had just sold out. My wife was bummed, but we rolled with it. Then one of the owners stopped by to check on us and when she mentioned she came here hoping for oxtail, he made it happen. I don't know how. I don't ask questions. All I know is a plate of fall-off-the-bone oxtail arrived like a miracle served with rice and peas, sweet plantains, and a fresh salad. I had the ribeye, cooked to perfection, with homemade garlic mashed potatoes, wine brown gravy, and tender broccolini. One of the best steaks I've ever had on an island. And let's talk desserts... Mango passion fruit cheesecake - tangy, creamy, unreal Coconut rum cake - soaked in island joy Bread pudding - warm, rich, perfect This is local ownership done right, native St. Thomians pouring love into the food and the experience. We were very happy with our dinner at Cutlass & Cane. They have a very solid wine list and a great selection of entrees where you would be hard pressed not to find something, even for the most finicky eater. I had the Oxtail and it was fall off the bone outstanding. The portions are quite large and are shareable, but you will be charged for plate sharing. Not a big deal, but if you order a few appetizers and an expensive bottle of wine, this should be waived. Make reservations and get there a bit early to enjoy a cocktail at the bar. Our bartender was outstanding and they have a very cool cocktail list. We will be back! read more

I love this place. It had a beautiful ambience, we sat outside on their newer patio with a view of the harbor. The food was lovely. The server was friendly and helpful. Not quite sure why this restaurant has such bad reviews, but I would go back in a heartbeat. The menu is not as descriptive about dishes as it should be. For example, the Chilean Seabass was not described as having a pistachio crust or a bouillabaisse. The grilled octopus was surprisingly tender. The salmon was cooked perfectly. A mandatory 20% tip for just two people feels unreasonable. For larger groups (eight or more) it makes sense, but applying it to small parties seems unfair. When the food is already pricey, adding an automatic 20% charge feels like too much. Diners should have the choice to tip based on their experience, not be forced into it. Practices like this leave a bad taste, no matter how good the meal was. read more

A very beautiful restaurant. We went for my sister's birthday and we were running a little late, and they accommodated that just fine (late being 7 minutes). Unfortunately, the service after that was subpar. Our waitress was very nice (Sienne, maybe. Apologies if I spelled it wrong), and she really wanted us to have the best experience we could. She told us upon arrival of the special appetizers (focaccia, which is what we ordered) and then took our drink orders with the app. She came back maybe 10-15 minutes later to get our meal order and had told us when we ordered the appetizer that they were out of oxtails. We ordered a cesar salad with shrimp, the red snapper, and the seafood pasta. About 45 minutes after we ordered, and almost an hour after we entered, they told us they were out of seafood pasta! We still didn't have the focaccia either. Bread came out five minutes after that. And our meals maybe 10 after that. It was not at all crowded enough for them to be taking as long as they did on our food. Once the seafood pasta wasn't coming, which is what my sister ordered, the waitress was very apologetic and tried to help us find a solution. The manager was also trying to help but I think at that point we were annoyed. No oxtails, no seafood pasta, and an incredibly long wait for what felt like wasn't worth it. My shrimp Caesar salad was good, but only had 4 shrimp for $16 extra dollar. If I could do half stars this was maybe 2.5 maybe 3.5, so i landed on 3. read more

This restaurant is absolutely stunning and is located right by the water. The hostess is very pleasant and the sitting area is chic. The restaurant requires all parties to be present before being seated and the bar area is open for walk ins. Our waitress Sin did an excellent job going over the menu and provided suggestions. She catered to all of us and had the friendliest personality. The oxtails were perfectly cooked and the meat fell off the bones. Everyone at the table left satisfied. This was my favorite meal during my trip. The ambiance is gorgeous and the service is top tier. It's located right on the water and used to be a Gucci store. The owner, AJ, met us as soon as our taxi arrived and was very personable. Miguel was our waiter and was fantastic. We ordered the caesar salad and stuffed lobster which was 10/10. We ate there 3 evenings ago and I felt ambushed. Service and ambiance were average and the food tasted good. Price was too high because management applied a mandated 20 percent tip! There was no warning on the printed menu. Website lists this but I did not book there. I have never been denied such a choice before. Decided to try cutlass and cane and find out what the hype is about what a disappointment for the prices they charge you think they would at least have a well trained staff ordered 3 apps lobster egg rolls tuna tataki and oysters they were ok But not for the price they charge and when I ordered salmon for an entree the bartender asked me how I wanted it cooked I said how do I want it cooked? Yes he said medium medium rare medium well I said I like it cooked but ok give it to me medium well and when it came out it was totally raw needless to say it was not edible and it turned me off he asked if I would like the kitchen cook up a new one I said no thank you at the end when he gave me the bill he took 1 glass of wine off the bill beware at that these prices you should have that problem and should not have to asked them to remove dirty plates in front of you Never returning and definitely not worth the money I guess people on st thomas are so desperate to have a good restaurant on island but to me it's not CUTLASS&CANE that's for sure read more

Came here for my boyfriend's birthday. Ordered jerk wings, fries, and oxtail plate. Waited 1 hr for oxtails, they brought out 2 plates when I only ordered 1. I had them take the other plate back. When my bf tries my oxtails, the server made a comment that she would have to charge a $14 sharing fee. We shared the fries, the wings, and it was not a problem. But because she made a mistake with the order, she wanted to be a whole bitch. I immediately asked for the Check and Had to take my food to go because I completely lost my appetite and would rather eat in the privacy of my hotel room without somebody breathing down my neck. Not to mention, they put service charge for $20 because that server knew she was definitely not going to get a tip! Didn't even offer a birthday celebration for my boyfriend. Asked for the manager 3 times to 3 different people. Manager finally came out and had a "ok but what do you want me to do about it" attitude. The Ambiance at Cutlass and Came is just beautiful. However the food was not so good. The food was extremely salty. I have never really complained about highly seasoned food before. The food is extremely overprice. The Oysters seemed mushy. The mussels was so small and shrunken inside the shell. And it was crazy that they charged for the dinner rolls. This restaurant should really consider revisiting some of their policies. During my visit, they would only let a person place their order when they had decided on the entire meal, which means we could not order an appetizer while we were deciding on our main and waiting for other members of our party. Additionally, even though the server told us the POS system has each person's total broken out by seat, they would not permit us to pay for our orders individually nor split evenly, since they do not permit more than three transactions per party. I could understand these limitations in some circumstances, however I would have thought this wouldn't be an issue at a place with such a high price point and had no customers at the time except one other table. Additionally in understanding the payment system already has each order totaled, what is the issue in making more than three transactions? It's clear these policies are frustrating and stressful for their staff as well. Otherwise, our service was great and the food was decent. I really hope they consider changing these policies.
