I have been a Kinnelon resident for over twenty years and have used this venue for many parties any gathering. I attended the 60 year anniversary party and I have to say The venue is dated, the food was flavorless and was served cold. The temperature of the room was very uncomfortable and when management was asked to correct it they did not nothing about and were flip. The wait staff who took care of the party also complained about the temperature in the room. My wife and I and another couple went to see Mechanic Street last night. We have never been to Cypress Tavern before but have lived a few towns away for 30 years. There is an inside space for dinner. If you go for dinner and music it's on the back patio. We shared a Polpette pizza as an appetizer. It was a good way to start. Two of us had the Hungarian goulash special for dinner, my wife had the short rib burger, and my friend's wife had the chicken gyro. All were very good. It was a chilly night so we appreciated the heaters outside. The band was amazing and there is a TV outside, so we got to see the Yankees win too. We wish we knew about this place earlier. Horrible. Would never come back again. To start, they come off as a Greek restaurant with some items on their menu listed as Mediterranean. However, looking at the menu, you need Adderall. They have a million things on their menu which automatically raises a red flag. A place with nice plated food with taste does not have a million items on their menu. Similar to why Applebees has so much on their menu, all trash. I had a fish dish which was my mistake. The fish was supposed to be " horseradish crusted " and the description of the dish sounded good. When I got it, it looked like a giant fried piece of fish on a plate with a cheese like fondue on it. Almost like a cafeteria lady slapped some white melted cheese on it. Disgusting presentation. To top it off, the fish did have not any season. Not even salt. It was completely bland. No horseradish taste to it at all. Second, the atmosphere. I don't know what some of the people are smoking by saying the decor looks nice because the restaurant is a catfish to what the pictures are. On the top floor, they had a buffet style table that was empty. It looked so tacky. The tables had a single cloth with no presentable decor on it at all. I worked in fine dining and casual restaurants and this was pathetic. Lastly, our waitress. Took 20 minutes to get our drinks/water. When taking our order she had to hover over me to look at the menu to see what i was ordering. Didn't refill my water, had to flag her down. She saw I had my full plate of fish and didn't even check in to see if I liked it or not. I told her it wasn't really ok and she just apologized and left to get the check. as I mentioned, working in restaurants, the best response would to apologize and offer another item on the menu or get the manager. Got talked into takeout from this place against my better judgement. Another truly mediocre meal. The rigatoni siciliano was under-cooked (not al-dente), the sauce was meh, the sausage was decent but nothing special. Side of hummus so so, baba ghanoush texture of snots, tzaziki was ok but more yougurt than anything else. Used to come here and the menu was too limited. Hit or miss! In some cases the food is superb and others I've felt completely miss the ball. For appetizers and just happy hour, I have always had a great experience. The nachos are great as is the pizza. When it comes to meals, I honestly never know what I will get - in some cases the BEST food and others totally eh. This Tavern is really growing on me. My wife and I have always wanted to come here, and we finally made it here on Friday night. Awesome Happy Hour specials that last until 7pm. Food is priced a bit high for me, but seeing where this place is, I can see why it's on the pricey side. Now, on to the show.... Pro's: - Happy Hour is VERY good! Beer and Wine discounts as well as food discounts until 7pm. Most places are until 6pm, but not here! - Fast, friendly service!! - Beautiful bar that includes many a TV surrounding it. Nice, cozy fireplace at the back near the bar. Con's: - A bit pricey.. - Can get over-crowded.. and you'll feel cramped a bit. We came back the next Saturday for a band, Country Comfort (which are awesome, BTW...), but when you have a popular event, the place really fills up quickly and fills up to the gills... Be prepared to really get to know your neighbor when this happens!! All in all, great place.. We did have a bite to eat, but we weren't too impressed.. Absolutely LOVE this place. We had our small wedding here on leap day 2/29/2020 (pre-covid) and my baby shower on 5/2/2021. I've visited this establishment a few times in the past month, as well as my family. My first trip there with my family was phenomenal. The food (a mixture of Greek and Italian) was amazing as well as the cocktails, and the ambiance and service were top notch. The second time my family and I visited the food was amazing, except for my drink from the bar (a simple Long Island Iced Tea) had barely any alcohol and didn't appear to be more than watered down soda. The bottom portion of the cocktail shouldn't have been clear. The bartender looked to be very busy talking and laughing with the other staff members instead of doing their job properly. Perhaps the employee was new, and this was simply a fluke. Staff members should be able to talk and be comfortable together, but not to the point of neglecting their job responsibilities. If I had a problem with the drink, why didn't I send it back? The truth is that I wanted to give the bartender the benefit of the doubt and believe they were new and unclear of the recipe. Although, a basic drink shouldn't be too difficult. Maybe the assumption was an error on my part. Last night my parents visited the restaurant after making a reservation via Open Table. When they arrived (10 minutes before their reservation time), they were told they would have to sit upstairs, at a high-top table, or at the bar. Both of my parents are senior citizens and have mobility issues, so climbing up a flight of stairs is really not an option, nor is it an option to climb up onto a high seat. When this was brought to the attention of the manager, they received the same seating options. The reason for this was that the tables in the dining room were "reserved for the band." However, there was no one there; no band or other diners whatsoever. For a party of two senior citizens, one would think the management could have been more accommodating. They chose not to be, which as shocking. This was something I never expected to hear, especially with the great encounters we'd had with the management on our prior visits. This experience definitely put certain things into perspective. Based on these visits, do I ever plan on returning? Truth is that I'm on the fence. Perhaps the reality is that if you want good service from this restaurant consistently, the best time to go is for lunch. Something to think about, if you or someone you'll be attending with has a mobility issue, consider calling ahead on a weekend night to see if you can get a seat the dining room. Otherwise, you might be told to go upstairs or sit in a tall seat that's hard to get on or off of. read more

My aunt posted a negative review below that I have to disagree with. This place was great. We attended my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary here and the experience was great. The staff let us in before opening to set up, allowing us to move tables and get our projector going. The food was awesome, especially for a buffet style meal. The servers were kind and courteous. Everyone, seemingly, had a wonderful time. I will say it was a bit hot, but we had 30+ people in a small room next to a woodfire pizza oven in the middle of the day. I was a guest for a party in their upstairs private room. Kathy was the only server for our group of 30 people. She was unbelievably attentive and thoughtful and fast. she was right there to offer us drinks When we arrived. our glasses were always full. She was constantly moving, had a joyous personality, and was very hospitable. we felt very well taken care of, and my cousin had a great surprise party. I have been wanting to try Cypress Tavern for several years and a trip thru Kinnelon finally gave me the opportunity. They were not busy on a late Sunday afternoon. The maître-d station was vacant, so I walked into the dining room where about half a dozen employees were taking their dinner yet it was about five minutes before another employee offered us a table. The craft beer menu is very impressive with about three dozen different beers, many from local NJ craft brewers. However, they only had about five or six of them available and were even out of stock on a beer from a brewery literally two miles down the road! Their excuse was that "it was Sunday and we ran low." I have ordered a flaming cheese Saganaki appetizer at other Greek restaurants and was impressed with the flair and drama with which they were served. At Cypress Tavern, the presentation was underwhelming with a portion size to match. They were out of stock on some of the entrée items. The seafood items we ordered were overcooked and bland and the sides were under-seasoned. The "Bleu Moon" burger is supposed to be served with avocado, which I assumed would be fresh; instead, it was delivered with a small ramekin of store-bought, processed "guacamole." Had a great time this past Saturday. They have live music and the last band that played, Background Noise, was amazing. The atmosphere was really fun and the service was superb. They lost one star only because they were having a hectic night and didn't have a few menu items available, but besides that the service was courteous and the food, drink, and ambiance were all worth returning for. The philly cheesesteak dumpling appetizer was really good; make sure you use their speciality ketchup with it. My beef gyro was really tasty. They really make delicious gyro meat--soft and well seasoned. My friend really enjoyed her salmon too. I had a drink made with earl gray tea and fig vodka that I really loved as well. Overall, a restaurant I will be glad to come back to to try more of their many menu items. read more

We had our salon Christmas Party here last night and I was impressed from start to finish! It wasn't impressive from the outside but once you step inside it was like being transported to a lodge in Aspen! Perfect setting for a holiday party! And beautifully decorated! Think fireplaces, earthly colors, candle chandeliers . Service was excellent . The young man we had was new but you could not tell until the owner told us. I love when you ask a menu question they are honest and say they are not sure but offer to check! Food itself was amazing so many outstanding choices. Cypress tavern is pretty close to my job, so I enjoy coming here for happy hour specials. Most of there appetizers are delicious like the cheesesteak egg rolls, 3 cheese macaroni, and the Asian calamari. Dinner here was just ok.. I had the chicken gyro platter. The chicken breast was small, over cooked and lacked any seasoning at all. The feta on the salad was dry and chalky. The tzatziki sauce was the driest and pastiest I've ever had. The fries were great though! Seasoned and yummy. I'm not sure I would come here again for anything but appetizers. This place is amazing . Being new to the area , this was the first place we ate at and loved it . The chicken Caesar salad was to die for. I have ordered take out multiple times at this restaurant and it's always a disaster. Twice the delivery was either dropped off at the wrong house or simply never came. Tonight I thought I'd pick it up to save the headache. I called around 2:30 to have dinner picked up at 5. My husband arrived at 5 and sat and waited for 45 minutes for the food to be ready as they forgot to fire the pizza. When he finally got home, the entrees were not in the bag!!!!!! All the food that was ready on time sat for 45 minutes and was cold, I literally had to throw it all in the oven. I called to complain and was told I'd get a call back - I never did. I'm so so so disappointed and was so upset - I am two weeks post partum and was trying to do a small gift exchange with our immediate family. I had to pull out my own leftovers from the fridge to feed everyone. read more

Our appetizers of fried calamari, sesame chicken fingers, were hot and tasty. The blue point oysters tasted fresh and cold. There is a huge selection of beers on tap and even more bottled. Specialty drinks like Silas Cider were quite spirited. Dinner included a veal chop, veal milenase, a bone in Ribeye, Filet Mignon, pork chops, lamb chops, Bronzini, Chicken Mediterraneo... Only open a few days at this point - the bussing was a little slow...the staff is friendly and checked in many times. Comments on the dishes varied from delicious to slightly over or under cooked. Nothing rated poor. some average to mostly above average. Dessert consisted of vanilla creme in phylo, a sold out salted butterscotch Creme Brule, tartufo... Where do I start? Maybe with a warning that this is going to be a lengthy review. We love this place! We drive by Cypress Estiatorio regularly but never took much notice because it sits back a bit from Kinnelon Road. We've been looking for a good Greek/Mediterranean restaurant in our extended area and when I saw a Living Social deal for Cypress Extiatorio, I thought, "Why not?" All I can say is wow, what a great find for two foodies! We had a late lunch there around 2:30 pm on a gorgeous Saturday summer afternoon. Understandably, it was slow. The staff was remarkably friendly and we were completely surprised by the appealing, somewhat hip/upscale decor. Good vibe and nicely done. Bravo to the owners. We decided to take a table in the bar area where we were waited on promptly. Our server, a young man with dark hair and glasses - I wish I could remember his name - was delightful. He was attentive and helpful with questions we had about the menu. We were starving (no breakfast and this was 2:30 pm), so we ordered two starters, burrata and tzatziki. The tzatziki was spot on with a perfect balance of creamy yogurt, garlic, grated cucumber dill and mint. I especially like that they included mint as well as dill. Many restaurants omit the mint. I think a hint of mint makes for great tzatziki. This was wonderful. The portion was large with lots of pita to accompany it. We ended up taking much of it home and it was gone before nightfall. Our daughter loved it! The burrata was simply exquisite. Burrata cheese, thinly sliced grilled eggplant and roasted red peppers with a reduction balsamic vinaigrette. Burrata cheese is like a ricotta, creamy and light on the inside with something akin to a thin shell of mozarella on the outside holding all of it in. Amazing! The roasted red peppers were definitely fresh and perfectly prepared, as was the eggplant. The drizzling of balsamic reduction was just right. The flavors were subtle and did not over power the delicate cheese. We sat and raved about this stacked appetizer until our entrees came. From the presentation to the carefully orchestrated medley of flavors, it really stood out. We've dined at some of the finest restaurants in NYC ( La Bernadin, Bouley, etc.) and throughout the U.S. This appetizer impressed us. My husband ordered a special lamb shank braised in a seasoned tomato sauce served atop orzo. I'm not a lamb lover so I didn't try a bite, but he was absolutely thrilled with this dish. I ordered the gyro platter and made the mistake of getting chicken instead of beef gyro meat. No matter where you go, the chicken just doesn't measure up to regular gyro meat, in my opinion. I had actually meant to order the souvlaki platter with grilled chicken. My mistake, not theirs, so I didn't send it back. I asked them to substitute salad for the fries and they were more than happy to accomodate me without upcharging. Everything was delicious, including the rice with vermicelli - wonderful full flavor. (I'm waiving comments on the gyro chicken meat because to me, it just doesn't measure up no matter where you get it.) Of course, this entree came with their amazing tzatziki sauce and pita. We ordered from the dinner menu beause we were seated right between the lunch and dinner hours. The portions were substantial. We took as much food home as we ate at the restaurant. We were so full, but decided to try the baklava. I'm not a baklava fan but I have to admit that Cypress Estiatorio's baklava truly wow'd me. Oh my! We shared a serving which was wise. It was an ample portion stacked high with lots of filling with oh-so-light and flaky phyllo crust. The honey had soaked in - you could tell they let this dessert rest for a day so all the flavors melded together perfectly. It tasted fresh and each bite was absolute heaven. After we paid our check one of the owners came up to chat with us about our experience. We told him how delighted we were to have found Cypress Estiatorio. He was super friendly and showed us the outdoor dining patio, which is a must on a nice day or for an evening meal. Even the landscaping surrounding the outdoor dining area as nicely designed and maintained. We have our list of favoriate local restaurants and Cypress Estiatorio is now officially on the list. From the decor to the cuisine, we love this place. I'm dying to go there on a beautiful summer evening and dine in their outdoor area. It's lovely. read more

Tried this local place for the first time. As I walked in, I noticed a nice pizza oven on the right, then went left to dine upstairs. I did pass the bar, which is big, and noticed a live band playing in their outside patio. Seemed busy around that area and not so much in ours. We made it upstairs with one other table eating in a big dinning area. The menu offers a mix of Italian and Greek foods. We start with the grilled octopus salad and a dozen raw clams. The octopus was horrible, very dry and old tasting. Very bad piece of octopus over a blah salad for $16. The raw clams had no meat to them, very disappointing. My kids shared a ny strip with a herb butter on it. Just an okay cut of meat and the herb butter wasn't bad. My wife had the salmon over spinach. The salmon was fresh but had no flavor and neither did the spinach. That's a meal she would normally devour but only ate the salmon. Complained the spinach was flavorless and left a chalky taste in her mouth. I ordered the scallops with angel hair pasta, in some red sauce. The scallops were so over cooked and could be the reason for being so chewy. They had to be the saddest scallops I've seen in a while, thrown on top of a mountain of pasta. The pasta wasn't mixed well with the sauce and just had a couple of ingredients thrown in. Over cooked pasta, that was clumped together in the middle of a dish, that didn't even have sauce mixed in(very sad). I barely ate any of the pasta and forced the scallops down. The wife ordered a brownie a la mode for the kids to share. The brownie was very dry and just okay. Definitely needs the ice cream or wouldn't be worth it at all. Even the double espressos were not worth it. Just no flavor or bite or anything lol. My poor wife is asking for sugar, because it is that bad and she never does. Overall disappointing experience. Would go back for the bar and live band. Maybe try a pizza but me and the wife agree we wouldn't dine here again. The service was good and everyone really polite. read more
