    D & D Bake Shoppe
    Tracy K.

D & D Bake Shop is a 30 yr old bakery located in a small older strip center, in South Farmingdale, just minutes north of Southern Pkwy, West of Rte 110. I have likely passed it by many times not noticing it until just recently. Thanks Laura - for your 1st to review .. and for pointing me toward D & D Bake Shoppe. I knew this would be an interesting review.. for one thing I phoned to check if they were open in bad weather last week, and the person wasn't interested in my bad connection and seemed a bit old school on the phone. None of this Yelping where, what, when was to be had. etc. lol. So here I am, pulled up today to check it out! Secondly it is now a multicultural bake shop including a variety of items to serve the community. On the sign, they make it clear, they carry what you may be looking for. French, Jewish, Spanish, Italian Bakery. Hmmmmmmmmmmm... now you have my attention. We'll see, but I can tell one thing.. I am feeling mostly Italian is still the basic tenet here. Inside, a variety of colorful fresh looking cakes rotating in a glass case, and a fresh array of bakery. Cookies, pies, babka, pasteries, soda breads etc. Cookies a bit light in color and sprinked etc.. one S shaped biscuit like cookie with, powdered sugar caught my eye, like grandma used to make.. hmm.. So basic but good, but of course not grandma's. They also carried NY style, Italian & Hungarian cheese cake. Good looking chocolate babka with some cherries inside. Mm. Photos tell the story. Btw, my photos were not appreciated, so I limited them to the few I took. Or would have taken more. So the babka qualifies for Jewish Bakery? It would stand up well if brought anywhere. Then there it was, Tres Leches, the same odd bland cake I found in two Columbian bakeries.. Surprise surprise, this was the best Tres Leche I have tried, and now I am officially converted. If you haven't liked it's blandness before, now is the time to try again.. I think I tasted a hint.. and I mean hint of lemon, and the icing soft and marshmellowy.. all in all, it was something I wish I brought more of. Sold in pieces($6) or by the cake ($28), one piece was a bit bigger than the Columbian places. But soooo much better. German bakeries have such a knack, but Italian's take the cake. hmm. Irish Soda bread looked good so why not... but had to photograph it at home. Despite a concern over my taking a few Yelp friendly photos, they remained courteous and let me leave with my snacks. Yes, I risked my quickly wearing out welcome, for my fellow yelpers. Kept true to finding and sharing cool places with my friends. The place was clean, the people helpful, the bakery creative and fresh, the selection nicely varied. A nice place, and a treat to find.

Our baby-shower cake, chocolate mouse with strawberries & whipped cream it was delicious as usual, my compliments to the baker

I been buying from this bakery for 15 years for all our special occasions and my sweet tooth cravings and always happy, our family favorite Three milk cake (tres leches) my latest order was my baby-shower cake. Yellow cake with whipped cream, chocolate mouse with strawberries filling OH MY GOD delicious as usual all our guests love it, I only had a little piece left for myself. As usual my compliments to the baker, I know you never let me down.

The pink cake was what was ordered. The blue is what was delivered.

Something about coffee cooked for a long period of time actually gives it that "rich smooth taste". I ordered their raspberry cheese cake. It was actually delicious but the portion was a bit smaller than what I was expecting. Atmosphere inside comfortable and active with new patrons walking in. I opted to sit outside which made me feel like I was in NYC at a ritzy Cafe next to Central Park. It was quieter and relaxing. *Parking lot is Huge and shared with other stores. Use exit number 3 for a traffic light to cross over Wantauh Avenue. *Bathrooms; are two and both co-ed. *Final thoughts Pardon my "FRENCH" but the French Workshop was just ok for me. They didnt have scoopable ice-cream on hand which would have been nice next to my cake and their coffee wasn't on par in regards to a "RICH BOLD TASTE". No free coffee refills, no porcelain cup, and no silverware. The only metal your going to get is the steel tray your desert comes on. Perhaps something to consider ? *The Review Guru Long Island NY

And they have a few vegan options! Don't expect macarons nor tarts, but that blueberry croissant I had was so delicious. It was more of a whole grain pastry than a traditional buttery croissant but because the blueberry filling was so sweet, I was happy for a less decadent pastry. I love that they have a nice array of coffee and matcha drinks too. I'm pretty sure the word has been out for some time now, but when that Starbucks line in the parking lot is just too much, The French Workshop is a better option (however, on a rainy Saturday in May, that line inside was considerable. People know what's good!) There's plenty of seating, too and if you are good at pretending, you almost feel you're in Europe (ignore the suburban strip mall that surrounds you).

The displays were filled with a nice variety of butter cookies, cakes, doughnuts and other classic pastries. Everything "looked" good, but the taste was just average. I would have pushed it to a 3 star review, but the young man behind the counter wasn't very friendly. The store was as empty when we went in so it wasn't like he was busy trying to take orders quickly. We told the young man that we would be ordering a variety of butter cookies and he looked at us annoyed and continued to serve us with a similar attitude. I guess maybe this is the expected service from the generation nowadays? I just expected more from a place that appeared so charming. The rainbow cookies seem to have anise in it, which is a bit odd for a rainbow cookies, and the chocolate coating was not very cocoa forward. It was also lacking jam. We were also really excited about the chocolate sandwiched butter cookies, but while the cookie itself was fresh, the ganache was missing the rich chocolatey flavor. Instead, it almost tasted like carob or some sort of diluted chocolate instead. The cookies itself were also not buttery enough, though they did taste freshly baked. All in all, Francesco isn't something to write home about and it's not a place I'd visit again.
